I’m thankful you guys could react to this movie:) and I’m sorry for people rudeness about the movie competition both movies are beautiful in their own way
Im so happy you guys watched this masterpiece of a film, i hope you guys can watch Sub versions next time cause in my opinion sub versions have more emotions to them, idk maybe im used to sub versions lol
I really enjoyed your guys reaction to A Silent Voice. When I watched the movie. I'm sure anyone who's ever been bullied can relate to this in one way or another. But for me it hits close to home for me. While I'm not deaf, I am disabled with cerebral palsy. Growing up, I've been bullied and teased every now and then. Even being dubbed "Captain Hook" with having a scar on my arm and it looking stiffed. With Shouko, I saw a lot of her in myself. Because just like her, I wanted to be involved and accepted by society. But it's difficult when you have a disability and people look at you like a alien or a mutant. I even had nights thinking "is it worth it to keep living or just to quit. Luckily I overcome those thoughts. Now as time pass by people that picked on me asked me for forgiveness and I accepted it. So when Shouko accepted Shoya's friendship. Took me back to my experience when I did the same. But yeah this movie is great overall. Like I said anyone that's been bullied or teased can relate to it. Especially those with a disability, doesn't even have to be deaf alone. Like I said with my past I endured just like Shouko and anyone with a disability. We all want to be accepted, loved and involved. Because that's are toughest obstacle that we as people with disabilities usually have to overcome. But anyways, you're guys reaction was great.
Sad fact; Kyoto Animation, the studio that made this movie, were victims of an an arson attack that killed 33 employees last year. It was a domestic terrorist attack that really shook both the anime industry and the Japanese public in general. It's especially saddening because KyoAni actually treated their employees well and took care of them, as opposed to the toxic overworking culture that a lot of other companies in Japan partake in.
It is sad that this happened. I believe the studio is back and operating now. I would love to see Blind Wave react to Violet Evergarden. I think it's Kyoto Animation's best work.
I'm with Eric when he said there is nothing wrong in liking both Your Name and A Silent Voice. People have this dumb competition between the two movies because they came out around the same time. At the end of the day, these two movies have brought so much to the Anime community with amazing filmmaking and people should appreciate that.
Ikr? Everyone has their own preferences, and different things speak to different people in different ways. So what if I like one a little more than the other? They're still phenomenal movies
@@Taizen001 Exactly! If someone prefers one movie over the other, that's perfectly fine. No need to disparage the other movie because you feel different about it.
As someone who has not been an avid anime viewer since just around the time these movies were released, I never knew there was such a competition. Though I'd heard of the greatness of both, I've only watched these two because the guys reacted to them. They're both such beautiful movies and their messages and plot are quite different, so I never thought of comparing them in that way.
When he gets sick because of the enxiety. Throwing up. I did the same. It's annoying. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't hold a conversation for longet han 30 minutes bacause I'd need to throw up. It was horrible.
Yep. The ending is really good too. That moment when you finally felt like you belong somewhere and relieved to the point of crying. I did that too. I was just randomly crying in the middle of the road surrounded by my friends when I finally realize, "Oh everything's fine now. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was" I started to open up more and stop looking down/avoiding people face since that day (sadly it gotten worse again few years later lol) That's why this movie is so relatable 😭👌🏼
@@Randommmmm204 yea and also when he met a slightly noise or just stood up everybody was looking at him but in reality they were not. It was just him thinking that
as someone with social anxiety, this movie depicted it so well,, just the pov camera looking down and not meeting the eyes, not seeing people's faces etc.. and at the end when all those crosses fell from the people's faces and the music soared and became alive again, i cried for an hour.. truly beautiful..
"What is this, a crossover episode?" One of my favorite reaction channels interacting with the other favorite's video on one of my favorite movies? Great times
@watashi yup makes it worse ... also hes talking about that boss Baby got nominated instead of either Silent VOice or Your Name... The Winner was Coco which was fine.
bigger dissapointment for me was Big Hero 6 actually winning vs Princess Kaguya in 2014. I mean big hero is fun but its so Basic .. meanwhile Princess Kaguya took 8 Years to finish and is Isao Takahata last movie befor dieng ... that was dissapointing
The reason she only has one hearing aid is because he permanently damaged her other ear as a child. This is one of the best movies that helps to showcase the impact of bullying on both the victim and the aggressor, and the long lasting impact. On a side note there's an even longer series of this in a Manga format. And this entire thing is based initially on a one shot that was beautifully well done.
An interesting fact about the Japanese version, Shoya didn't call Shoko by her first name at all in the whole movie until the balcony scene. An important cultural detail I don't think translates well into English. Either way, it still did well in both translations
To educate people here; the woman who voiced Shoko in the English dub is actually a deaf actress that they specifically sought out for the role. I'll always tell people to watch both sub and dub of this movie for that reason alone, they're both just such great versions.
A quote I saw on a comment section about this movie's ending: "Apologizing is hard. Forgiving is harder. Forgiving yourself is near impossible." And think that quote, in many ways, embodies this movie very well.
For me personally, I disliked Miki more then Naoka because even though she wad a bitch and was clearly in the wrong, at least Naoka was straight up with her feelings about Shouko and was mean directly and I can somewhat understand her feelings and reasoning even if their mean.... Miki I dislike because she never admitted that she was part of the bullying and even that the end she never apologizes about anything and continues to deny any responibility...... Those are my feelings about the characters.....
If you read the manga Naoka is very understandable and a lot more relatable. Miki is just a straight up liar and bitch in both the film and manga. Miki isn’t even just a lair in the manga, she straight up bullies and makes fun of some of the other characters.
Yeah, Naoka is at least an honest bully, plus most of her reasoning makes sense, I understand her anger after Shouko's suicide attempt etc... Miki is just a shady self-important bitch pretending to be a saint, those are the worst.
I've never felt more understood by a piece of media than I was by this film when it was released. It's a meticulously-crafted thesis on the plight of those who struggle to communicate with others, whether the cause be physical disability or social anxiety. I hold it responsible for showing me how to live again, at a time when I felt abandoned and worthless. A literal 11/10 in my book: it gets a special mention removed from the rest when people ask me about my favourite movies or the best anime I've ever seen, because if it weren't for this film, I wouldn't be sitting with anyone, being asked what the best anime I've ever seen was. I have a deeply personal relationship with this movie and I cannot be more grateful to Yoshitoki Oima (the original manga artist), Naoka Yamada (the director who creatively led this adaptation), Kazuya Takao (director of photography), Kensuke Ushio (the mastermind behind this film's uncomfortably intimate score), Yota Tsuruoka (sound director), Jonathan Clements (who organised and hosted the Scotland Loves Anime showing of this film where I first viewed it), the wonderful, talented staff at Kyoto Animation, and anyone and everyone who helped create this film and bring its message of friendship, understanding and togetherness to me. These people helped me live.
In japan, there's a phrase 'Tsuki ga kirei desu ne?" which translates to "The moon is beautiful tonight right?" . Which is a poetic way to say "I love you" or at least the subtle way to say it because "Tsuki = Moon" sounds almost the same as "Suki = like, love".
it wasn't originally coined just because Tsuki sounds like Suki as Suki doesn't actually mean love at all. Souseki Natsume as an English teacher over heard a student translating the English "I love you" directly as the Japanese "ware Kimi o Aisu". basically there was no direct translation of the English I love you and Japanese people of that time did not use the japanese word for "to love" "Aisu" as it went against the Japanese sensibility. even to this day its not completely common for Japanese people to say Aishteru (I love you), yes they say Suki and Daisuki but those don't mean love at all when directly translated. they just mean like and like a lot. basically Souseki decided Tsuki ga kirei desu ne would be a better translation whilst also avoiding conflicting with Japanese sensibilities. I think there's something even more beautiful in saying I love you in such an indirect way compared to directly saying it.
A Silent Voice focuses a lot on the everyday life problems that teenagers have. Each character portrays and has a different problem. But it mostly portrays social anxiety and bullying, just like in the beginning the bully was then the one who got bullied.
This is one of the better pieces of media that handles the redemption of a bully really well imo. Some bullies can be so needlessly and excessively cruel that even years later it's hard to see them in a positive light, I was very impressed with how well this movie was able to make you feel for Shoya even after seeing how mean he was as a kid.
I don’t know you, but I had it to for a long time, but I surrounded myself around good people and become more aware to the world. If you allow yourself. You can change your perspective on life.
@@corruptedteka I have it too, but mine is under control now. There are some options to treat it but how to get better depends on where the anxiety comes from and what keeps it going. In my case, it was caused by some undefined anxiety disorder I got before 4 yo (probably some mild ptsd) and what kept the disorder going was an out-of-control-always-on stress switch (the amygdala). So I had to take medication to turn that off before behavioural changes could stick in my brain.
This movie made me cry as a kid, I'm partially deaf and have anxiety so it hit close to home, it was the first movie I saw that had someone who was deaf too.
This movie hits SO MUCH harder for me since I am deaf myself and have had some dark thoughts over there years for feeling like an alien. Now I do have people around me to keep me up and i continue to be strong
A silent voice: 1. School system issues and bullying. 2. How a disability can negatively affect one's self esteem, which pushes that person even further away from people around them. 3. Sensational music and production, this movie is a masterpiece: pictures and music. 4. Mental Illness Narrative: Some of the typical manifestations of major depressive disorder are hopelessness, guilt, and suicidal thoughts. In the first volume, we see high school-aged Ishida completely resigned to the fact he will never have friends again. He detaches himself from everyone who might even want to get close to him, which is showcased by his interactions with fellow students who are now simply faces with “X’s” scrawled over them.
To me the "X"s represent his connection to others. Isolating yourself by severing connections is one of most common behaviors people with depression have. He doesn't trust anymore, he is afraid of putting himself out there. He also looks down a lot and avoids eye contact because that is a very intimate thing to do. When you are talking to someone and you are looking at each other, it shows that you are paying attention and that you care what the other person is saying, there is a connection. He doesn't want that, but some times people manage to sneak in to his heart. At the end of the movie he is actively trying to connect to the world, thats why the Xs fall as well as the music swells up. Again, this is how I saw it and how it felt. I deal with depression and this is the first movie that I felt expressed exactly how it feels to deal with depression and low self worth.
She actually irritates me to no end, to the point where I do not even dislike the dark haired girl. Her personality comes across as fake and unrealistic.
As someone who read the manga, Ueno is a very interesting character but the movie cut out pretty much all of her side of the story. It doesn't make what she did any better but it makes you at least understand where her feelings are coming from. And her character development by the end is great.
As someone who also read the manga, every side character is alittle interesting but they ALL got cut from the film and just kinda show up in the 3rd act :/... and i could be wrong it's been a year or so but i don't remember it being a romance, i mean shoko and shoya became good friends but it was very very hinted and not upfront aside from the i wuv moo part.
@@Retroholic The manga is actually a lot heavier pronounced with the romance angle. It's still mostly an undertone, but there are more scenes revolving around Shouya's developing crush, other characters taking note of the way their relationship is developing, etc
Oh no......that broke me as a child. 😂😂 I made a promise to myself that night never to watch it again and I never did. But if they watch it I’ll have to watch it with them again 😩
Your name is fucking awesome, its entertaining, pulls at heartstrings and is an incredible feat of animation. Silent Voice is something entirely different, and whatever it is, I will carry it in my heart till the day I die. Edit - I love that Aaron's struggle with animated metaphors continues.
If I remember correctly, the *"X's"* on ppl's faces is his way of self-exiling, a self-isolation from developing connections with ppl, because he felt he didn't deserve it. And bit by bit, as ppl showed hard enough to build/show they wanted a connection with him, if they were succesful, he felt 'safe' and would accept them, then start to get to know them. But the moment anything turned sour, it'd be like a trigger reminding him of his self hate & depression which would lead him back to pushing them away and self-isolating Basically it's a movie about self-acceptance, forgiveness *(self-forgiveness & for others) , and that nobody being perfect physically or internally, so it's imporatant to accept one another building positive relationships and special bonds/friendships.
as someone who was a bully when i was young and have social anxiety now, this movie triggered me in a lot of ways. It reminded me of my shameful past that i tried to move on from and made me relate in a lot of ways from the social anxiety perspective. It was... really hard for me to finish this movie because i kept being reminded of my stupidity and dumbassery when I was a kid, made me wish I could turn back time and stop myself from being such a douche. Needless to say, as much as I would like to rewatch this movie I'm too much of a coward to be reminded of my old self again.
Randomly rewatching this reaction and saw this comment. Hey, you know you were stupid and want to do better. You're definitely not cowardly, it's courageous to admit that. A lot of people go their whole lives never admitting they were wrong or even changing from the dumb things they did. We can all grow and change. I wont defend and say "bah kids don't know what they're doing/kids are stupid" because I don't fully believe that but lots of kids do stuff they know they shouldn't, it's rarely ever black and white. We're all complicated humans. The character I like the least in this movie is the one who doesn't try and do better, but I want all the best for the protagonist who is. All the best to you..and as this movie shows, you're allowed to grow and still deserve a happy life!
Man, so I cried a LOT during this movie because of how much I related to Shoyo. I was astonished by how well the Xs on the faces seemed to work on expressing how people can make you so afraid. Eventually, you just give up trying to get to know people because not only does it hurt to make eye contact with everyone you also you feel that they hate you. Eventually you just stop trying to view them as people. It's easier to block out their existence and live in solitude. I have friends now, and I'm not as alone but bad days still happen- just not as often.
53:10 Moon is pronounced TSUKI and Like is pronounced SUKI, so Rick brought up a pretty good point about that. It's definitely a translation thing. I also love Rick bringing up The Missing; I know that game wrecked him to bits. I was just thinking that he might be reminded of it from watching this movie.
This is legit one of my favorite movies, definitley my favorite animated one, and I've been looking forward to it since you've put it on polls. SO happy you guys got to enjoy it
The koi fish going up stream against the current symbolizes the struggle or fighting of obstacles. I love that little part. Near the end, I didnt understand why some of the "friends" didn't have their reflection shown on the floor.
Fun fact about Shoko’s confession. While he did misunderstand it, it is a reference to Natsume Soseki, the most acclaimed novelist in Japan who once taught his student that the English translation of ‘I love you’ is ‘The moon is beautiful.’ So in a way, Shoya did answer Shoko back 😄
I understand that many of you may hate Ueno and that is fine but it seems most have forgotten In grade school the first person to reach out to Nishimiya when she arrives was Ueno, this is made abundantly clear where she asks for Nishimiya’s notebook while everyone else was still shocked that she was deaf. During lessons, Nishimiya would ask what the teacher says because the Teacher never changed the way he taught to account for her disability, so Ueno took it upon herself to explain to Nishimiya what he was saying causing her to miss parts of the lessons as well. As time goes on, the Nishimiya situation is constantly complained about amongst her peers because sacrifices have to be made in order to compensate for her and integrate her into their school life, Ueno attempts to get this through to Nishimiya in her notebook when they are practicing choir (by saying just mouth the words) but they lose the choir competition as a result because it just doesn’t sound as good anymore, and Nishimiya can only apologize. Please don’t forget these are kids, they lack the maturity and reasoning of someone of our age, so instead of seeing Nishimiya as someone who needs additional help, they see her as a burden that’s costing them everything. The last straw for Ueno was being told that she’d have to learn sign language to better communicate with Nishimiya, where she states it’s easier for her to write to her, and the assistant teacher says “well it’s easier for Nishimiya to do ASL”, not accounting for how Ueno feels and instead, again, accommodating for Nishimiya’s deficiency (and it’s made evident this what the impression the author wanted to give off when they show the reading scene where Ueno is told to stop reading, yet Nishimiya who can’t correctly pronounce the words, is allowed to continue) AS A KID this stings because nobody is taking to account HOW YOU feel. Ueno explains this feeling to her on the Ferris Wheel and she says she doesn’t want to be friends and can’t bring herself to forgive her, which is understandable because to Ueno, Nishimiya only burdens those she interacts with, which isn’t exactly true (from our omniscient eyes) but isn’t exactly false either (from what she’s seen). Ueno tells her it’s okay to hate her because Ueno hates her too and they can act as if they tolerate each other for the group (for Ishida’s sake obviously, more obvious in the manga) but Nishimiya says “I don’t hate you, I hate myself ” this statement causes Ueno to erupt because she feels she’s not listening to her and she’s not trying to understand her even to this day, all Nishimiya can do is “apologize” ...this moment was Ueno trying to compromise for Ishida in her own way without exactly lying to herself about how she feels about Nishimiya, but Nishimiya, In Ueno’s eyes, rejects this. We, the Audience, know Nishimiya harbors no ill will against her. Ueno loves Ishida, this has been obvious since they were kids, and it’s still the case when they’ve grown up, she regrets not standing up for him when everyone else used him as a scapegoat. She is doing everything in her power to get him to forgive her and accept her just as Ishida is doing the SAME for Nishimiya. To Ueno, Nishimiya coming to the school ruined everything, the friendship with Ishida and the chemistry within the classroom as a whole. In her eyes, she’s only seen Nishimiya as being a burden and when Ishida almost loses his life to save Nishimiya, she is justifiably upset. You seriously cannot tell me she had no right to be when the guy she cares for and loves nearly kills himself in order to save the girl who she sees as being only a burden for him, in her eyes this reinforces her belief. She confronts her at the hospital and attacks her, letting out all her frustrations and anger on Nishimiya and also her mom when she shows to defend her. The only person who can understand how Ueno feels in this scene is Nishimiya’s sister. THIS is why Nishimiya’s sister doesn’t stop Ueno, and does anyone give her shit for it? No. I really don’t see how anyone says her arc is bad because if you pay any attention to the supporting characters, you may not like it, but you can understand where she’s coming from. She doesn’t have to have a redeeming character arc for her character arc to be successful. because a character doesn’t react the way you think you would doesn’t make them inherently bad characters. She says back then she couldn’t understand her as a person but she was doing the BEST SHE COULD, but Nishimiya couldn’t understand her either, and so she intentionally started to badmouth her in order to give the hint to stay away, but Nishimiya doesn’t take up on it. (Again I feel the Manga explains this better and shows the bullying wasn’t as immediate as the movie let’s on) She never denies her part of her bullying after they grow up, in fact she takes responsibility for it as opposed to back when they were kids, this is growth from her as a kid because she let Ishida take the fall alone. I think that it’s entirely the teachers/adults fault for forcing the kids into a situation they were not prepared for, they weren’t equipped with knowledge and maturity they have now. Everyone has their own way of projecting emotions and their frustrations, I’m not saying she was in the right for attacking Nishimiya because she wasn’t, Nishimiya did not mean for Ishida to be hurt, BUT I’m saying I can understand where Ueno is coming from having almost lost someone she truly cares for and loves. The same way people say Ueno “development was weak” can be said for Nishimiya. She’s still apologetic and despite everyone’s attempts to make her see the good in the world and in herself she still tries to kill herself, is that fair to state? Of course not, because we can understand her and where she’s coming from, we know depression and self-loathing can’t be remedied with something from a first aid kit. It takes time and it takes self reflection and even that, sometimes isn’t enough. Is her anger misplaced, in our eyes maybe, but in her eyes no, it’s all about perspective. I don’t think it’s fair to say Ueno’s reaction was unjustified either, because at this point, Ishida hasn’t woken up yet and is a coma, she’s again grieving in the sense you would for loss, and emotions are at an all time high for everyone. Her perspective is “you did this to him and he’s dead and you aren’t”. She doesn’t know if he’s waking up or not, she just knows Nishimiya was there and Nishimiya was trying to kill herself and Ishida stopped her, and now he’s badly hurt. This enforces her stance that Nishimiya only brings misery. I think we can all agree with the sentiment of “actions have consequences” Nishimiya actions resulted in Ishida being hurt. Did she mean for it happen? Of course not. But it did, and Ueno (who’s already shown to be violent) is projecting her anger on who she sees is the source. I do advise reading the manga because the Manga protrays this soo much better and gives soo much more details in this scene. In conclusion, I really appreciate the take on Ueno’s character and she gets soo much hate for being human.
Beautifully said. For a movie all about communication and learning to understand the perspective of a bully, it's quite astonishing how many not just fail to understand Ueno but outright refuse to try. They see her as nothing more than an irredeemable villain, which runs entirely contrary to the entire message and theme of the story. This is a movie that is telling us that we are all human. We all have flaws; we all make mistakes; we all do bad things. But none of that makes us any less human. Is Ueno a bad person? Probably. Is she irrationally evil? Not at all. Whenever I see someone refuse to entertain the idea that Ueno has understandable reasons for all the things that she does, I immediately know that they failed to understand the core message of the movie.
Can people stop trying to compare A Silent Voice and Your Name? Aside from having both movies focused on a boy and girl's relationship, the two stories and themes they are showing are completely different. Its like asking what's better "A Cheese Burger or Ice Cream?" those two options are wayyy different to compare.
The X's on peoples faces are the people he has pushed out of his life, he doesnt interact with them, always looks down and so they are exed out of his life. This makes him feel alone even in company, and the cause of his depression. By opening up to people and mending relationships he is by the end, able to look at others again. Truly beautiful
Okay but he was a kid why are his “friends” pretending like they cared as if they were by his side after Shoko transferred didn’t they bully him too then they pretend to be nice they are worse than him especially when they were his hype men for when he was a bully
@@isaacwilcox3010 It doesn't repeat the cycle. Shoya stopped being a bully after getting a taste of his own medicine. So technically, the world lost one more bully. I could care less about Shoya in this movie, mfer deserved everything he got. Usually bullies are spawned by bad parenting or mistreatment, but Shoya had a good single mother and friends too. Guy brought it onto himself.
@@TobiNano u missed the point..if u read the manga maybe u will understand better..shoya and his classmates are same even the teacher shouko is at fault too..because she is a disabled girl and getting hurt all the time people tend to look pass her mistake...everyone is at fault good thing is pretty much everyone understood what wrong they did and corrected it..except for that bitch miki she is still the same
Enjoyed the reaction! The in-depth discussion was great, this movie hits you hard because of how realistic it feels. It's great that you all watched this movie and Your Name because they are two of the best anime movies. I would love to see you guys react to an anime movie called Redline. It's basically podracing, but with some of the best animation and art style. I think you guys would really enjoy it.
When i saw rhis movie i went in thinking i was gonna dislike it or be bored. I've dealt with depression and suicidal thoughts. I've lost emotion of sadness most i feel is emptiness instead. It's very very very difficult for me to cry. This movie, 20 minutes in (when they are in the classroom fighting) the frustration they felt, the frustration i felt. Me trying to come up with words for what i was experiencing. All of that together just made me choke up and burst into tears. Felt great. This movie is incredible. My favorite
Rick absolutely got it right. Love and Moon sounds similar in Japan. It's "Suki" and "Tsuki". Also funnily enough, "tsuki ga kirei" (the moon is beautiful, isn't it.) is a phrase commonly used to express love to someone and Shoyo just replied with a "yeah the moon is beautiful" LMAO
"moon - tsuki (月/つき)" has the sound closest to "like - suki (好き/すき)", it's been a perpetual vocab thing for japanese, so much so that there are actual old japanese writings doing that wordplay Japanese accents are also depending on the region, like in english programs you hear BBC english, New York english, Boston/Cali/Texas/Southern... depending on the region of Japan on how close proper (classic Kyoto imperial accent vs modern Tokyo big city) to how "hick/hillbilly" (osaka or other areas with ranches)
Kyoto Animation was the studio who animated this film, a studio that's famous for adapting series that have cute & adorably animated characters, comical moments, & tend to tug at the heart in more ways than one. they were also one of the few animation studios in Japan that also cared immensely about it's staff (that department in Japan is not the best to work in to put it lightly). they sadly underwent an Arson attack over a year ago, with many lives either being injured or taken in the aftermath. the silver lining is that after such a horrible event had occured, a Gofundme page was made in support of the studio, and the worker's family and loved ones, surpassing the original goal by a long shot. not to mention how many creators on this platform released a video showing their appreciation for the studio, and how many artists made tribute works after hearing about the sad news. just goes to show that media such as anime can have more value than simply entertainment for so many people. they've only recently started back up & working again, with Violet Evergarden, but it's still horrible what happened to them and the people related to anyone working at the studio. with that being said, now onto my thoughts on the film Silent Voice. so i don't exactly remember if it was confirmed, but the actress for Shoko (Lexi Marman-Cowden) from what i heard was actually deaf. what i like about this film, is that in some ways, everyone who interacted with Shoko, has done things that aren't things that can be forgiven. more or less, that group is full of flawed, selfish, and even terrible people. but the nice thing about it, is that it is centered on the idea that people can change. it doesn't redeem them, it doesn't make them forgivable, but it does show that they are willing to change somehow. that's something a handful of people, especially nowadays, don't seem to understand, is that people can change from who they were a long time ago. Shoya, and his group of friends, were not great people when they were children, and while now they're not essentially the best, they are working to better themselves in some way or another. a lot of people compared this to the film Your Name on which was better, which i'm in agreement with the statement that there's nothing wrong with liking them both. I liked both films, but i personally liked A Silent Voice a little more than Your Name. doesn't mean i think less of it because of that, it's just my personal preference and i enjoyed both films in their own rights. i personally love both of the mothers in this film. Shoya's Mom is incredibly caring, and Shoko's Mom just doesn't take shit from anyone. fun fact: the voice of Satoshi in the dub is Max Mittleman, the voice of Saitama in One Punch Man.
The best thing I could find on Ripples in Water is that a person's actions affect others(for good or bad)/can reap consequences that will eventually ripple back to them. It's something I'd also been seeing in anime plenty and been wondering about recently.
There is a scene in assassination classroom where if you watch it dubbed, the characters sound like average English in the states. However, they’re Japanese kids and when they actually speak to Americans we get to hear them speak English with a Japanese accent; implying every other time we hear them, the kids are actually speaking Japanese to each other. The viewer is just hears it as regular English because it’s a dub.
i deal a lot with depression and ive attempted suicide before so i badly wanted you guys to react to this because this film means a lot to me. luckly i havent been that bad since 2014 however this year has made my depression worse than it has been. i watched this movie a few months ago and it broke me. this was on my recommended on netflix and i watched it not knowing what it was. this is one of my favorite films now. so thank you for watching this
Oh, by the way, in Japan, bullying works differently. Usually, when someone is bullied, it’s the entire class and even the teacher bullying that person. The teacher wasn’t just idly covering his mouth/talking with his back to the students. He did that very deliberately. The teacher also only stepped in when Shouko’s mom brought it up with administration because his job was at stake there. He also pinned all of the bullying on Shoyo, who admittedly was the most physical with the bullying. Although, thinking about it, the girls’ bullying might have been more insidious, but less noticeable. They started not only bullying Shouko, but also Sahara for even trying to help Shouko to the point where she had to transfer schools. Again, Shoya’s bullying was the most harmful to her physically (considering he permanently damaged her ear to the point where she was only able to use one hearing aid after that) but that doesn’t at all devalue the girls’ bullying.
Man I love this movie so much...... I was so close to finishing the movie without crying until that ending scene hit..... I couldn't stop crying without that
I'm nobody, so can someone recommend to them to watch "From this corner of the world" (Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni), it was released the same year as Your Name and A silent Voice, even won some awards that year, but no many people have watched on USA probably because is about the Hiroshima bombing and the other two movies become more popular.
I love this movie. I went in with little expectations and felt it was great. A good example of you never know what someone else is going through. I always felt that the X's were him not letting people in. Both from not being worthy of it and if you let people in you can't be hurt. While he was a bully, they all were and then went on to bully him. So when he let's people in the X goes away.
Finally, you guys reacted to this masterpiece... thus movie is definitely the best out there with heavy feels throughout the movie... I have seen countless movies (HOLLYWOOD and Bollywood) but nothing is great enough compared to KOE NO KATACHI/A SILENT VOICE...
In my honest opinion, I love this one more than Your Name. But emotionally, I can't handle it more than the 1 viewing I watched. It's *SOOO* rough to watch, especially as the bullied of elementary/middle school, and it just hurts. I love both movies; I recommend both to people looking for anime, and I think they belong in the circle of praise that Ghibli films get, but gun-to-my-head this is the best anime movie I've seen.
That's totally fair. Both are very good movies. I think for me I prefer Your Name because I had more of an emotional response to it. It resonated with me so much and because of which it's my favorite anime movie of all time.
The bullying part was hard for me as well. But in a different way. Being surrounded by friends one minute and suddenly getting bullied by the people you thought were your friends next. It was like watching myself going through middle school. No joke.
One thing to note about Nao, the black haired chick that's kinda mean. One thing that was kinda lost in the movie adaptation, just vague hints. More so in the dub I felt. I don't think the voice director did a good job conveying her scenes either. Which explains why she acted like she did. She had a big crush on the main character, so she's acting awkward.
I don't get how it was so hard for him to figure out why the X's where placed, it was so simple, the X's were representing his anxiety, he cannot make eye contact, he recognized the black haired girl at that point because he knew her face and we had to see her, and he wanted to try reconnecting it's so simple
To anyone who didn't get it, at 13:22 he misunderstood the word "suki" (to like/love) for the word "tsuki" (moon), doesn't make much sense when translated so i thought i might give a quick explanation.
A little bit late about this. Now, let me start this off that, there's nothing wrong with watching EN Sub. It's just that in this movie, there are several context that are laid out if you watched this in EN Sub. For example, the scene on the bridge where Shoko tried to confess that she likes him audibly, but Shoya misunderstood it as "moon". In Nihongo, the phrase "I like you" can be translated as "Suki" which is why when she tries to say it, albeit in a mumbling manner, Shoya (as well as the audience) only heard the syllable *-ki*. Shoya misunderstood it as the moon which is "tsuki" in Nihongo. It's also some sort of a running joke (or trope if you will) across several animes with romance subplot, that a character says "tsuki" to indirectly confess their attraction towards another character, or mislead. Nevertheless, I'm glad you saw this movie because back when I read the manga and I heard that this was going to have an anime adaptation, I was thrilled.
I've watched and studied it a few times - the manga is fantastic (expensive now, go share the cost like my brother and I did) - the first book is a real learning experience in HOW to read manga (backward) but by the time you get to the second it is 2nd nature and you aren't distracted figuring what to look/read at next. A lot more detail (depth of characters); each character is a personality type and we all are a mix and have both good and bad things but once your realize it you can change for the future. Fascinating hit you between the eyes as relatable - when she is dreaming that she can understand everyone and they understand her; all happy going to bed .. and she wakes up to basically the horror of what is her reality. The manga does the same thing for him dreaming as a comparative (not sure if in the same novel; think so) - one scene all the words are cut in half like a printing error; but its intentional to show how she is only catching half of what people are saying and you can experience how tricky that would be to figure out what is going on. The end is "likely" a shared dream - she finally understands him perfectly - which is also really the theme - so many ways to understand people and we live in so little of that and end up not really understanding people. He is watching people and trying to figure out what is "socially expected" you see him interested in signing but he sees the girl beside him dismiss it so he figure that is how to look at it; people are bothered by her so he thinks being bothered is how to handle it - in the end he is really wanting to know her but his tools for communicating was to tease and wrestle with his friends to build relationships.
YES! Edit: Since it's release, A Silent Voice has been one of my favorite films along with being one of my top 5 manga. I've read the manga and watched the film multiple times. I have reconciled with the actions of all of the characters, except for one. Fuck that teacher. And I emotionally related more to A Silent Voice than most films since I was bullied at a younger age. Also For posterity-sake Moon - Tsuki Like - Suki
This was SOOOO desired & SOOOOO deserved. THANK YOU. I Loved This Movie & you guys gave the exact after commentary I knew you would. It's impossible to not have a good conversation about the topics this movie brought up.
Just think how will nishimiya's mother fell when she was came to know that her daughter's ears bleeding and everyone bully her 😞😞😞😞😢 Pls don't bully anyone 😞
the "x" are used to show the anxiety, for these reason in some people random people don't have the and sometimes they do, depending on how he is felling
There are people that perceive the world exactly like sho. When he ordered takoyaki with cat girl someone he doesn't fully trust. If she betrays his trust he will block her out her out with no hesitation. She betrayed him by surprising him with a childhood friend that was not his friend in present day. He took that as betrayal and instantly blocked her out again.
about him falling into the `pond`and bleeding. its cause he didnt actually fall into the water. he fell onto some bushes. if you watch the frame while he is falling , there is no water to be found. We also see the egg fallign into the bowl, which represents him falling and hitting the ground, afterwards being in the water is just a expresion of how he feels. he feels cold like being into the deep sea, without a sound. then he says he feels warm. cause of the blood. its all symbolism.
He actually fell in a pond tho. Both in the manga and in the movie, they showed his childhood friend (the yellow haired guy) with wet hair and wet clothes along with the ambulances and Ueno later revealed to Shoya that he was saved by him.
After reading the manga, I'm sad that they cut off Ueno's backstory as to why she did that to Shoko. Totally not saying that what she did was okay but at least you can understand her reasonsing and I'm miffed that they made Kawai (Miki) look so compassionate in the ending scene when she was gaslighting everyone into thinking that she was innocent from the bullying and placing sole blame on Ishida. Nishimiya's mom wasn't that nice as well; in the manga she already knew that her daughter's already getting bullied but told her to suck it up and keep going. It did reflect how some adults are useless when it comes to bullying as the teacher who already saw Ishida making fun of Shoko and did nothing but just nonchalantly tells him to stop rather than contact the parents so they can discipline their kids.
The English title of this movie better describes the viewers initial reaction. The movie throws so much at you - bullying, blaming, shaming, guilt, social anxiety, jealousy, self hatred, suicide, supportive friendship - when its over, your mind is spinning with so many thoughts and emotions, it leaves you speechless at first until you break it down.
A Silent movie is something special. And yes you do need a second or third watch to absorb and understand everything in the movie. Naoko Yamada is the best director and screenwriter in japan. The movie directorially does things that noone else has done and the original story does things story wise that noone else has done aka follow a past bully as a protagonist. when Naoko Yamada was asked what went through her mind while adapting this story - where the protagonist is a bit unusual- into a movie she said "Because I am neither a judge nor God, I tried not to judge what they did, what they saw, what they felt, and all the circumstances surrounding them. I just tried to understand and respect their emotions and actions, which consisted of many layers and reasons. I took this approach again and again for various characters, and wove it into the world of this film. We all have experiences like them when sinking into the darkness of loneliness, and times that we think we see the light but miss it. I also wanted to tell a story about the unconditional love of mothers, who stand by them under all circumstances. I also talk about the world surrounding them as a realm where you can reach only after going back and forth between darkness and light. The world as a profound and gentle place that accepts everything. This is what I really wanted to express in this film."
The director did great but honestly I don’t give him to much credit. He didn’t really do anything special when adapting the story. He just cut out a bunch of stuff and left what was necessary.
@@isaacwilcox3010 A director does WAY more than decide what makes the cut. To name just ONE of their jobs, the director oversees every single shot of their project, making sure that everything from the colors, animation, camera angle, pacing sound, music are all the best they can be to make the scene as great as possible. Hell, if you've ever heard bad voice acting, or seen bad actors, there's a very real chance that that poor performance was due to a bad director.
@@beyondtrash1627 I’m not saying the director didn’t do other stuff. What I was commenting about was the directors adaption of the story itself. The director did a lot of great stuff for the film but when it comes to his adaption of the story itself he really didn’t do anything that great. He just cut a bunch of stuff besides what was necessary for the story to make sense and because of that the story looses a lot of great stuff from the manga.
@@eirik.9384 Not really. The reason it flowed well is because the original story flowed well. The director didn’t do anything impressive. He just cut all the unnecessary scenes that develop the other characters.
Only the dub had a deaf voice actress. The sub had Saori Hayami, a veteran voice actress, who isn't deaf but she met deaf people and studied how they talked. In order for her to nail how Shouko would talk, she apparently recorded almost all of her lines with cotton balls in her mouth.
I know it's not a movie , but please watch the anime "Dororo". It's extremally good and I feel like it doesn't get enough recognition. It's a remake of an older anime but I think the 2019 adaptation does a better job of doing the show justice.

Recommend Guy Ritchie's 'The Gentlemen' for a possible reaction. Love the channel
Please watch Grave of the fireflies
Sad fact; Kyoto Animation, the studio that made this movie, were victims of an an arson attack that killed 33 employees last year. It was a domestic terrorist attack that really shook both the anime industry and the Japanese public in general.
It's especially saddening because KyoAni actually treated their employees well and took care of them, as opposed to the toxic overworking culture that a lot of other companies in Japan partake in.
One of the worst moments in animation history.
I still remember first reading it on the day it happened. I was so fucked up the whole week by that story...
last year? it feels like it's been way longer,
@@Jakokokoroko I think the studio is back now.
Yes and you can like over the other or think one is better than the other without it being an issue either, not everything has to be a fight.
@@christophekanaa1104 Oh totally, but from what I've seen it's always been some sort of fight.
The way this movie handles social anxiety is just too good.
Also depression
When he gets sick because of the enxiety. Throwing up. I did the same. It's annoying. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't hold a conversation for longet han 30 minutes bacause I'd need to throw up. It was horrible.
Yep. The ending is really good too. That moment when you finally felt like you belong somewhere and relieved to the point of crying. I did that too. I was just randomly crying in the middle of the road surrounded by my friends when I finally realize, "Oh everything's fine now. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was" I started to open up more and stop looking down/avoiding people face since that day (sadly it gotten worse again few years later lol)
That's why this movie is so relatable 😭👌🏼

just your daily reminder that this movie lost an Oscar to the Boss Baby back in 2018
Still unbelievable😒
Don’t get me wrong I liked the boss baby, but it can never win against a silent voice not even in another dimension.
????? WHY THE FUCK BABY BOSS WAS NOMINATED FOR AN OSCAR
WHAT?!
Either way, it still did well in both translations
the thing is, the scene is still impactful without that. just hearing the desperation in his voice as he screams her name is heartwrenching
@@LemonBattery of course it still comes across well dubbed. But it does lose extra significance that is present in the original voice work.
To educate people here; the woman who voiced Shoko in the English dub is actually a deaf actress that they specifically sought out for the role. I'll always tell people to watch both sub and dub of this movie for that reason alone, they're both just such great versions.
I am glad you watched this film. This film falls in the category of "I will show my kids one day"
This one and The Wolf Children are really fun watches for me.
And by fun I mean touching.
This movie, and also Grave of Fireflies.
@@faiyyyeru_17 @ArlanKels agreed on both!
Agreed!
Definitely, with Wolf Children, Maquia and All Ghibli films
The scene when shouko’s mom and sister bow to Shouya’s mom in the hospital makes me sob every time I watch. Such a great film.
Ugh, same. The other one that makes me instantly well up is the ferris wheel and Shouko saying that she hates herself. That hits so hard.
A quote I saw on a comment section about this movie's ending:
"Apologizing is hard. Forgiving is harder. Forgiving yourself is near impossible."
And think that quote, in many ways, embodies this movie very well.
Definitely I agree with you
If you read the manga Naoka is very understandable and a lot more relatable. Miki is just a straight up liar and bitch in both the film and manga. Miki isn’t even just a lair in the manga, she straight up bullies and makes fun of some of the other characters.
@@isaacwilcox3010 yeah I decided to read the manga just so I could see if they did that differently but I would say miki is even worse in the manga
Yeah, Naoka is at least an honest bully, plus most of her reasoning makes sense, I understand her anger after Shouko's suicide attempt etc... Miki is just a shady self-important bitch pretending to be a saint, those are the worst.
I agree with you completely.
Do you want a cookie?
@@knightmayor1703 depends on the cookie
I think there's something even more beautiful in saying I love you in such an indirect way compared to directly saying it.
there's an anime titled that way and it was cute.
@@eggsalad44 yep, it's a goodshow, it's vanilla as fck
A Silent Voice focuses a lot on the everyday life problems that teenagers have. Each character portrays and has a different problem. But it mostly portrays social anxiety and bullying, just like in the beginning the bully was then the one who got bullied.
Self-hatred is definitely another life problem that's addressed
This is one of the better pieces of media that handles the redemption of a bully really well imo. Some bullies can be so needlessly and excessively cruel that even years later it's hard to see them in a positive light, I was very impressed with how well this movie was able to make you feel for Shoya even after seeing how mean he was as a kid.
The Xs over people's faces are signs for social anxiety. No one is available for socialization/bonding from the character's point of view.
Yep. I have it, I relate to how it's portrayed.
Now if only it got better for me...

How are you doing now bro
Hope youve been doing okay these days!!
A silent voice:
1. School system issues and bullying.
2. How a disability can negatively affect one's self esteem, which pushes that person even further away from people around them.
3. Sensational music and production, this movie is a masterpiece: pictures and music.
4. Mental Illness Narrative:
Some of the typical manifestations of major depressive disorder are hopelessness, guilt, and suicidal thoughts.

Edit - I love that Aaron's struggle with animated metaphors continues.
English dub of this film is incredible. Lexi Marman is deaf and the perfect choice to play Shouko
But the moment anything turned sour, it'd be like a trigger reminding him of his self hate & depression which would lead him back to pushing them away and self-isolating
Basically it's a movie about self-acceptance, forgiveness *(self-forgiveness & for others) , and that nobody being perfect physically or internally, so it's imporatant to accept one another building positive relationships and special bonds/friendships.
Everyone after watching this movie:

as someone who was a bully when i was young and have social anxiety now, this movie triggered me in a lot of ways.

Fun fact about Shoko’s confession. While he did misunderstand it, it is a reference to Natsume Soseki, the most acclaimed novelist in Japan who once taught his student that the English translation of ‘I love you’ is ‘The moon is beautiful.’ So in a way, Shoya did answer Shoko back 😄
Damn even just watching that 20 min cut of the movie still made me feel emotional, that's how you know it's beyond being just a good movie.
A watched this movie 3 times now, i'm at a point where if i even hear a part of the ost i feel like crying
Every time, every time this movie just gets the water works going. It is so cute and sweet. and the acts of trying to fix it all
So, so many tears were shed (by me)
I’m so glad to see your guys reaction, this is one of my favorites. It really hits hard, on a very personal level
When we talk about EMOTIONS one name that pops up is BANANA FISH series
YES 😢😢
Too bad it didn't get a dub, cause I would definitely like to see them react to it.
Omg yes
(Again I feel the Manga explains this better and shows the bullying wasn’t as immediate as the movie let’s on)
She never denies her part of her bullying after they grow up, in fact she takes responsibility for it as opposed to back when they were kids, this is growth from her as a kid because she let Ishida take the fall alone.
I think we can all agree with the sentiment of “actions have consequences”
Nishimiya actions resulted in Ishida being hurt.

@@shrekbaby33Having the attention span of a goldfish isn't a flex.
Well-written! You gave me a new appreciation for the character!
As someone with very bad social anxiety I can say this movie depicts it so well, I got very emotional while watching it
I hope you guys watch Wolf Children next. These two were the only Japanese Animated Films that made me cry.
how about "violet evergarden"?? anyone?
Yes!!
Yessss
The X's on peoples faces are the people he has pushed out of his life, he doesnt interact with them, always looks down and so they are exed out of his life. This makes him feel alone even in company, and the cause of his depression. By opening up to people and mending relationships he is by the end, able to look at others again. Truly beautiful
Okay but he was a kid why are his “friends” pretending like they cared as if they were by his side after Shoko transferred didn’t they bully him too then they pretend to be nice they are worse than him especially when they were his hype men for when he was a bully
"it is ok to bully a bully" thats pretty much thinking of every living human, mine too
@@Sifat_Rashid That’s a bad thinking to have. It just repeats the cycle endlessly.
@@TobiNano u missed the point..if u read the manga maybe u will understand better..shoya and his classmates are same even the teacher

guys.. if you haven't watched yet, can you watch some studio ghibli movies? tia :)
I actually enjoy the dubbed version of this movie! The actress who voices shoko is actually deaf, which makes it even better!
My favorite
This movie always get me. It gets to real and my heart just can't take it
Sigh... getting ready to ugly cry again, I suppose...

Oof
Rick absolutely got it right. Love and Moon sounds similar in Japan. It's "Suki" and "Tsuki". Also funnily enough, "tsuki ga kirei" (the moon is beautiful, isn't it.) is a phrase commonly used to express love to someone and Shoyo just replied with a "yeah the moon is beautiful" LMAO
Lets goooo, if a rollercoaster is a movie, this is it
"moon - tsuki (月/つき)" has the sound closest to "like - suki (好き/すき)", it's been a perpetual vocab thing for japanese, so much so that there are actual old japanese writings doing that wordplay
Japanese accents are also depending on the region, like in english programs you hear BBC english, New York english, Boston/Cali/Texas/Southern... depending on the region of Japan on how close proper (classic Kyoto imperial accent vs modern Tokyo big city) to how "hick/hillbilly" (osaka or other areas with ranches)
11:45 still makes me laugh, and 17:42 still makes me cry

Oh and for an Italian accent in Japanese, watch the JoJo’s episode “Let’s Go Eat Some Italian Food”
For the voice actor dub English, she was deaf.
Man I love this movie so much...... I was so close to finishing the movie without crying until that ending scene hit..... I couldn't stop crying without that
you need to do "Weathering With You" next which is by the same director of Your Name
it would be very cool if you watch the movie "parasite" 2019
I feel like they’d definitely enjoy it, but seems subtitles is their kryptonite.
I love that movie! It hits me hard every time...
Now y'all need to watch Naoko Yamada's other standalone film Liz and the Blue Bird!
No joke.
I never thought I'd see the day. The first anime movie since becoming an adult that made me cry.
I thought that was pretty obvious in the dub honestly. It's not really that subtle.
not that hard to tell she was crushing in dub dude
5:00 pinnacle of my rage was at this moment I only needed to see y'all reaction for this part
Love to see the fandom still going hard!!!💪
I don't get how it was so hard for him to figure out why the X's where placed, it was so simple, the X's were representing his anxiety, he cannot make eye contact, he recognized the black haired girl at that point because he knew her face and we had to see her, and he wanted to try reconnecting it's so simple
"Well...i hate him" 😂 too right Eric

Not in the Manga though.
He actually fell in a pond tho. Both in the manga and in the movie, they showed his childhood friend (the yellow haired guy) with wet hair and wet clothes along with the ambulances and Ueno later revealed to Shoya that he was saved by him.
WAIT WHAT!!! I COMMENTED WANTING THIS BUT I DIDNT THINK YALL WOULD ACTAULLY DO IT ONE DAY! LETS GOOOOOOOOOO
Next in line for great anime movies could be... Tokyo Godfathers! It's almost Christmas, too!
Ugh love this movies!!
I also love your name and the garden of words, sooo good 😩😩
After reading the manga, I'm sad that they cut off Ueno's backstory as to why she did that to Shoko.
The movie directorially does things that noone else has done and the original story does things story wise that noone else has done aka follow a past bully as a protagonist. when Naoko Yamada was asked what went through her mind while adapting this story - where the protagonist is a bit unusual- into a movie she said
"Because I am neither a judge nor God, I tried not to judge what they did, what they saw, what they felt, and all the circumstances surrounding them.
@@isaacwilcox3010 disagree. His adaptation is incredible. If all he did was cutting then it wouldn't flow as well as it did.
