    I am no longer recommending the MoFi router. A far superior product is described in this video: ruclips.net/video/gk-_vM2COIw/видео.html

    • @meepmonster750
      @meepmonster750 3 года назад

      The Mofi has been out for years. I appreciate it's record more than anything. Is it right to recommend a product that you haven't personally tested?

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  3 года назад

      @@meepmonster750 I'll have videos shortly with performance comparisons for the Insty Connect. Insty Connect uses the same manufactured equipment from the same company as what MoFi uses. It's just a better quality router and modem. Other than the antenna design it's not a new product so it is fair to recommend it over the MoFi. I've also seen results from a working Insty Connect system so this is not guesswork. Once you see the comparison you'll understand why it is a far superior product and why it is a game changer for mobile Internet use.

    • @brianv3913
      @brianv3913 3 года назад

      So does the Insty Connect pretty much replace the need for sperate standalone installation of a cell signal booster, such as a Hiboost or weBoost system? I live in a residential area with lots of trees and such, so my cell signal is pretty weak at times, like 2-3 bars and over -100 dbm. Was thinking of getting a weBoost but might wait for this. I just purchased a mofi 4500 sim 7 model and was having trouble setting it up. Did not match some of the steps in your video.

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  3 года назад +1

      @@brianv3913 With the Insty Connect or the MoFi it will boost the cell signal that comes in from the antenna but it does not replicate it to other devices in your house. However, you can connect your phone to the WiFi hotspot and make a Internet data call. I do that often when I am in a location that does not have T-Mobile and I call through my AT&T data connection.

    • @brianv3913
      @brianv3913 3 года назад

      @@SeleTraining right. But could you expect to see the same kind of cell booster gain to your Insty router that you would see from a weBoost signal booster? With their antenna design?

    Thank you so very much. I am embarrassed about how many times I watched and rewatched this video during setup. This video was the only reason I was able to get my mofi connected and running. My only suggestion that I might add is to explain the install of the SIM card in a little more detail only because I had never even seen a SIM before this. But that was on me. I took about 90 minutes to figure out that mine was in backwards but maybe I am not the sharpest tool in the shed. A couple more notes on the setup of the MoFi. You can update the firmware under System-Remote Update. The latest version is 3.8.4. The mofinetwork notes also state that if you have Sprint Unlimited or Verizon prepaid to use the 3.7.6Generic firmware. See the notes at mofinetwork.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=21. It is also suggested to set MSS to auto for better performance. Look under Network-General and check the box for "Auto Calc Best MSS".

I have been using my hotspot on this phone for a few years but the MOFI is much better because i can use my outdoor mimo antennas i have. Tomorrow I plan on turning the antenna to find B1 which is a little faster @ ~50down and 25up. My AT&T plan is the old plan that i have had for several years with no data cap and unlimited, we use about 450mb a month and have seen no throttling what so ever.

    Great video! Question: I'm using this router in my van. Since I'm traveling/moving, I'm guessing I would NOT lock it into a band. There is a band 'auto' setting. Is it correct to assume the auto setting will pick and use the strongest band?

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  4 года назад +3

      There is a band auto setting but I've found that it does not do a good job of switching between bands on its own and I have to run the band scan when I go to a new location anyway. When you run the band scan it releases the bands and then defaults to the best one.

    • @SeleTraining

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  4 года назад +4

      @@ggr1847 The MoFi defaults to the TTL 65 setting which uses streaming data only and it will work with T-Mobile. The key is that you don't want to use a hotspot only data plan. If your T-Mobile SIM came out of a hotspot device it will only give you hotspot data and will throttle once you hit the limits. If it is a regular line SIM from an iPad or cell phone it should work fine. I'm using T-Mobile and it's working great with the MoFi.

    For those of you trying to use Verizon there is a solution that has been confirmed to work by two subscribers. In the MoFi menu go to Network-Mofi Internal Modem and change the ISP TTL setting from "Linux-2 65" to "Linux 64". That has allowed them to go past the throttled data limit with their Verizon sim in the MoFi. For all other carriers the TTL should stay at the default of "Linux-2 65". I saw people asking if metro by tmobile (pcs) worked. I could not get it going. I worked with the hotline and metro as well. Swapping an active metro sim would not get internet connection even working with the mofi help line. Even with entering the metro APN manually (Sele said it wasnt in the drop down which is true but there is a spot you can type a custom one in)They advised me I had to contact metro, and with giving metro the IMEI from the router, it just kept saying not a valid imei. I am saying with confidence that metro is a no go.
    I did get it going with straight talk though, I had the sim active in another device and switched it over, typed in the straight talk custom APN and boom it was going.
    I do understand going with the prepaid is not ideal, but this was the quick fix for me. I bought a month of $55 unlimited and if this month goes well, I will move everything to another carrier and use the router as an "add a line"
    Weird find though, I get full bars on metro (tmobile) call quality is good, data slow.
    I only get 2 bars on straight talk (verizon) calls drop, data faster.
    Verizon is 3x faster, I did scan on all bands manually, I just cant get anything higher than 1-10mbs down on metro. Straight talk is 7-15mbs and that is enough to do my job via zoom meetings so sticking with that.

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  4 года назад

      Thanks for sharing the info. It helps for people to see which service will work. Did you try fast.metropcs.com for the customer APN for Metro? That's good it works with Straight Talk. Many people have been asking about that carrier. What did you use for the APN?
      My main concern over prepaid lines is that several people reported they still throttle at the data limit even when they work in the MoFi. It's as if there is no streaming data included with those plans. Also AT&T has shutdown many of the prepaid accounts. If it works for you after a you hit the limit let me know.
      I believe Metro has a lower tier access to data so you generally are behind all the other data users. That is part of why it is a cheaper plan. Also, if you use the SIM7 model of the MoFi router it has band 71 for T-Mobile and may be faster.

      @SeleTraining  3 года назад

      Yes, the APN has to be set correctly for the SIM you are using. That is the primary issue for connectivity. Run a band scan and see if it picks up any available bands. If it does then you should be able to get one to connect to the internet.

      Great! The only issue with cancellation is if you purchased a prepaid SIM from eBay. I have a postpaid AT&T SIM and have been using it for the last 18 months with no issues. So if you do get canceled then consider getting an AT&T iPad Unlimited data plan SIM from a local store that offers it for $20/month as a new customer. So, I called the MOFO tech support and they said that I can not just use the cell sim card without having an additional hotspot plan to it. Somehow I had the impression that I didn't need to purchase a hotspot plan - that only have a data plan from the sim card would suffice. Would you elaborate on this for me. I don't wish to add hotspot to my cell plan if I don't have to.

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  4 года назад

      MoFi support is wrong. Using a regular cell plan is how this works with the TTL.. what may be the issue is Sprint as I mentioned. Make sure you do a band scan and see if it shows available bands. You may need to reset the Sierra module and reset the phone number. Then try locking to each band to find one that works. If it still isn’t working it probably is Sprint.

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  4 года назад

      The MoFI has it's own wifi hotspot and the coverage distance is excellent so I would not suggest you need any other device. Using 2 yagi antennas makes sense if you plan to do carrier aggregation which combines the bandwidth from both antennas. That works in the MoFi SIM4 version but not in the SIM7. One Yagi or Proxicast antenna is plenty for normal use. It's only if you have a poor signal to the tower that you really need more antennas.

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  4 года назад

      Can you check your SIM in a phone and see if you get the same speed? If it is much better with a phone then you'll want to make sure you have the antennas connected correctly on the MoFi. The wide antennas are the cell tower signal and should be on the side labeled 3G/4G LET. That smaller antennas are for your WiFi signal from the MoFi.

    Yesterday I put my working Verizon unlimited cell sim in the MOFI and setup using your plan. There was no internet. Today I got an email from Verizon saying that my sim had been moved from a phone to a MOFI and that the two are not compatible because it is an unlimited plan. I had previously tried a hotspot sim. This did work but was throttled.

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  3 года назад

      You'll want to check the comments and my newer videos. Verizon is the one carrier that is picky about your SIM being used in any other device from your original phone and they may suspend it. Also, the TTL solution to avoid throttling only works on a standard phone plan. It can't be a hotspot data only plan or prepaid plan. Hotspot data plans do not have the streaming data option that comes with a regular phone plan so you will still get throttled at the data limit. An alternative if you want to dedicate a SIM to the MoFi is to get an AT&T iPad Unlimited Data plan. You can find that if you call around to the AT&T stores and ask for it. It's a regular phone plan that works great with the MoFi and is only $20/mo as a new customer but not all stores offer it. You'll also need an iPad to use for activation when you go into the store.

    Because of your videos we have reliable wifi in our vacation home. One quick question on how do we assign the carrier aggregate? If we have 2 bands that have good and ok signal but the band with a lower signal has better wifi speeds. But I can't figure how to set up the carrier aggregate for the best two bands. Any suggestions would be great.

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  3 года назад

      You can go to the advanced bandlock and select just the bands that you want to use. Don't use all bands. If you get those settings correct it will aggregate the bands. You can check to see if it is aggregating by going to overview and click on Quick Check Signal Strength. It will show if aggregation is enabled. For the best aggregation its good to have two separate directional antennas and you can point them toward the tower/bands you want to use. Also, be aware that the SIM4 model does aggregation but the SIM7 model does not. The SIM8 or any of the newer MoFi 5500 have carrier aggregation as well.

      Yes, the SIM card is activated with a phone number. If you don't see it listed in the MoFi then you may need to choose Reset the Phone Number/SIM ID from the menu. If you still don't see your phone number then the MoFi is not detecting your SIM properly and you need to try reinstalling the sim card in the slot on the side of the MoFi or check it in a cell phone to confirm it works before trying the MoFi. Once you see the phone number you know the MoFi detects the SIM properly and you can continue with the Band settings.

      @@SeleTraining Can you elaborate on "can corrupt data"? What data? And to say something "might" happen is to also say that it "might not" a happen. Is there any factual data to prove that Chrome "can" corrupt, or it this statement based on all anecdotal evidence that you have heard from somebody who had an issue setting this up and blamed Chrome? Human intervention leaves room for human error. Can you tell me where that assertion comes from? After years as an IT pro, I learned that "might" is never valid. Either this happens or that happens. There is no "sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't" when dealing with a piece of machinery that has no ability to think and make decisions. I would really like to know more about this from the tech side of it. Before i spent $350 on a piece of hardware I would only use on my 10-12 short trailer trips I make per year I need more solid answers. If the notes in the MoFi say that, is it not possible that they just have a hard on against Google and Chrome? A lot of people hate Microsoft so much that they refuse to use Internet Explorer, somehow thinking that Microsoft cares whether Bob in Wichita likes them or not.
      PS. The term "unlimited" means "having no limits", so to say that they "may" throttle you if the tower is busy and you are over your limit is 180 degrees opposed to the word "unlimited", as that is indeed a limit. Whether it has happened to you or not is incidental. That's like saying "I eat McDonald's food every meal and I'm not fat so McDonald's food doesn't make you fat." It may not make YOU fat, but it has made others fat, so that absolute statement is not valid. Computers and technology are very black and white. There is no gray area of "might and yet might not".

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  5 лет назад +2

      MoFi states that if you use the wrong browser to write data back to the device when making changes to the settings it can corrupt the data written. I have not had any corruption problems. I am only basing this on what MoFi states on their website. It might not be true but I'll use a different browser to avoid the potential issue. You certainly can do more research if your browser is important to you. For me I follow those warnings unless I hear differently. I use multiple browsers anyway so I just created a shortcut on the old IE and use it to edit my settings on the MoFi.
      This solution is unlimited. You can use an unlimited amount of data with no throttling. Your analogy is non-sequitur. A more appropriate analogy would be to say that you can eat an unlimited amount of hamburgers at McDonalds despite the fact that it's physically impossible to eat thousands of them every day. If you go over your limit you will get deprioritized if the tower is busy. That's not throttling. You have access to the fastest data possible in line behind other users. Much like slowing down eating your unlimited hamburgers when you are full. The fact that it almost never happens does matter because you can count on it not being a problem.

      Make sure the SIM is activated with a phone and test it for Internet before you use it in the MoFi. If that works then you have to set the Provider Selector to AT&T and the APN as well. Then do a band scan to see which bands are available. • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  4 года назад +1

      If you activate the SIM in a phone or iPad then you can move it to the MoFi. Your carrier will assign a phone number to the SIM but the MoFi does not use it. It does not provide phone functionality, only data so any active SIM will work in the MoFi.

      @@SeleTraining what is the best SIM to get? Prepaid? Is there really an unlimited SIM that isn’t capped or throttled? Thank you!!

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  4 года назад +1

      @@katieferrari5143 Don't use a prepaid SIM. Most of those get blocked by the carrier when used in another device like the MoFi. The problem with most carriers is that they don't offer unlimited plans currently. So you are limited to 23GB or 50GB with most plans and then you are throttled to very slow speeds that make it useless. The benefit of the MoFi is that you can use any postpaid carrier SIM and set the TTL to Linux 65 in the menu of the MoFi to go past the data cap without throttling. This works with many different carrier SIM's. I normally suggest that you add a line to your existing carrier plan because that is the cheapest but you can get an AT&T iPad data plan for $20/mo as a new customer if you call around to several AT&T stores and ask for it. Otherwise just make sure you use a standard cell phone plan. It should not be a prepaid or hotspot only data plan. Also, be careful with Verizon because they may block your SIM. Other carriers work great!

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  4 года назад +1

      You'll want to configure the MoFi as the main carrier for Consumer Cellular. That should be AT&T or T-Mobile. So set the Provide Selector to one of those and use the APN for AT&T or T-Mobile as well. Make sure you can do a band scan and see available bands. If not then it is a configuration issue. Also the SIM should be activated in a phone before using it in the MoFi.

    Going to TMobile today to just get a sim card. So I pop it in and go through set up and all should be good? Is there data caps on TMobile? Roughly how much data is used in a regular month? Just trying to reassure myself that by buying this it isn't for nothing. What is your experience using this? Thanks in advance.

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  4 года назад +1

      I have T-Mobile with the MoFi and use over 150GB per month. I trade it out with AT&T as I travel based on coverage. You'll need to get a regular T-Mobile line for a phone. That may require buying a cheap or free phone plan like Magenta to get the SIM and then put it in the MoFi. Make sure it is a regular phone plan and not a hotspot data only plan. Also it needs to be postpaid. Many prepaid plans don't go past the data cap. You don't need an HD or high data use plan either. It's just a regular base phone plan. With T-Mobile all plans come with 50GB of streaming data but the MoFi TTL setting will allow it to go past that limit without throttling. You'll still see the data use on your bill but won't get charged for the extra streaming data. You can purchase the MoFi through Amazon using the link I provide in the description of the video. If there is any problem you have 30 days to return it. If you already have a T-Mobile phone I'd suggest testing with that SIM first and then purchase another line if you want to dedicate a SIM for the MoFi. Then you're not committing to a new line until you confirm the MoFi works.

      I’d suggest the SIM7 as long as you’re not using Sprint. I chose a Proxicast antenna for my RV since it is omnidirectional and you don’t have to adjust it to find the tower. The SIM7 does not do aggregation of multiple antennas so if you want to do that then get the SIM4. None of these handle multiple SIM cards yet so you still have to swap the SIM if you use multiple carriers like I do. The alternate would be to get dual MoFi’s and put a different SIM in each with one failing over to the other.

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  4 года назад

      Some people have seen a noticeable difference when hardwire connected to a port on the MoFi instead of using Wifi. It's worth testing that to see if it makes a difference. The antenna is primarily going to improve the signal but could also get you access to other bands that may perform better too. One test I use is to see what the speed is when the SIM is used in a phone and if there is a big difference between the phone and MoFi it may be the band in use. You can do a band scan on the MoFi and try each band individually to see which one performs best. Also, be aware that if you have Visible or another third party plan they will sometimes limit your bandwidth to 5Mbps or less even with a good signal.
