Honestly, Mario in Brawl can best be described as a Master of None. He has somewhat decent moves that are completely outclassed by nearly every other character in the game, making it hard for him to really stand out amongst the cast. Smash 4 turned him into an absolute beast.
I thought that Mario was always supposed to be a Jack-of-all-trades/Master of None type character in all of the Smash games, NOT just only in "Brawl", LOL I know that you were mainly focusing on talking about Mario's viability in "Brawl" though.
@@Cybertasm8798 So you don't use Mario in "Brawl" just because that he's a Low Tier character in that game? I wouldn't let Tier Lists decide of who you want to main if you're just only playing Smash Bros. casually. I personally play as both Luigi AND Mario across ALL Smash games casually. Even when they do happen to be Low Tier characters. Since I have a lot of character loyalty towards both of them. LOL
@@SiMgUrL1721I agree with that statement. I did let tier lists influence my character picks though to some extent. Like when I copped Ultimate I used to main Marth but now I started playing Roy
@@CipherKnighto It just seems that Tier Lists only truly matter if you're playing Smash at a High/Competitive level. I'll be honest. If I played Melee at a Competitive level, then I probably wouldn't even use Mario in Melee nearly as much as I would play as him in casual settings. Especially since Mario still has problems with KOing opponents from time to time. I'll just most likely only end up using Marth and Luigi instead. So, it's much more difficult with being loyal towards certain characters if you're playing Smash at a High level.
Surprised Sonic wasn't mentioned. He was mid tier in Brawl, almost low tier then had an INSANE amount of buffs in Smash 4 that made him literally top 5 even despite nerfs in later patches
Sheik, Sonic, and Captain Falcon from Brawl to Smash 4 could’ve made the video. All three were just below average to bad in Brawl and were much improved in Smash 4
I would've included Roy for the transition from Smash 4 to Ultimate. I also would've included more than just Mario for the transition from Brawl to Smash 4.
@thepooroldsoul8179 It's probably because that Mario has received the most amount of buffs in transition from "Brawl" to "Smash 4". Remember that Mario basically went from being a Low/Bottom Tier character in "Brawl" to actually being a Top Tier character in "Smash 4".
Palu in 4 was meant to be the custom move showcase. if you think about it, it fits now that Custom moves are gone, i guess merging the counter and reflect was one way to show that custom moves could be decent because explosive flame was always better than reflect
This is the most likely answer - the devs spent most of their time giving her the most diverse and unique set of custom moves - but at the expense of her having any sort of identity or archetype in her base kit. I'm guessing they thought it was fine for her to have shit framedata and stats because "they'll just use lightweight"
@@nothingnesslol9538 True. However, Luigi was still immensely buffed in Melee. The only things that he truly lost in Melee were when his Uppercut move was no longer nearly as deadly/broken, and when his recovery was directly nerfed as well. Since his recovery no longer can deal any horizontal distance like you originally could in Smash 64 back then. In Melee, Luigi has the single best and longest Wavedash since he has the lowest amount of traction in the entire game. LOL Not only was Luigi's walking/running speeds immensely increased, but his Drill Kick is now considered to be one of his strongest KO tools that he has in his kit. Heck. This is something that his older brother Mario doesn't have since his Drill Kick is almost completely useless. Plus, Luigi doesn't suffer with having some KO problems like Mario has in Melee, unfortunately. In my opinion, Luigi is, by far, way better than Mario is in Melee to the point where Luigi can easily become a High Tier in the distant future (just like Yoshi). LOL In contrast, Mario is now greatly at risk of becoming a Low Tier character in the distant future to the point where some people even say that he's NOW considered to be a Low Tier character.
I think that Mario should have never been ranked as a Low/Bottom tier character in Brawl in the first place because it's proof that goes to show that Mario never gets the respect that he deserves as Nintendo's mascot.
Now you can do characters that stayed the same in between games. Like I guess Mario in 64 and Melee, Pikachu in Melee and Brawl, Zero Suit in Brawl and 4, Fox in 4 and Ult. (My guesses)
ZSS changed signifanctly between brawl and S4. New up special and Fsmash, significant reduction in distance of her whip attacks to make her more suited to close quarters combat. She may not look all too different, but the changes are definitely there and significant
@eeveewithcoffee9554 Zss tier list placements are little more different because ZSS is a high tier in brawl but a top tier in Sm4sh while yes I get in their placement number but there not in same type of tier I can agree with fox and sorta with Mario but the others not so much
However, the main difference is that Mario's overall KO power and recovery were nerfed pretty hard in Melee, but he was still an average Mid tier character back then. It's probably because that his overall speed and combo games were buffed in Melee instead back then.
Great idea for a vid, loved it. Another idea could be to also have characters with the biggest glow-ups after being absent for multiple games like Pichu, Young Link, Wolf, and Snake
Really shocked you didn't talk about Smash 4 Mewtwo post patch. Still, Mewtwo really went from 0 to hero REAL fast.
I've already talked about that in a previous video, "Underrated Characters Throughout Super Smash Bros." IMO Mewtwo pre-patches doesn't fall into the category of "in between" because he was buffed "during" the lifespan of the game.
Surprised pichu didnt get an honorable mention. He was easily the most buffed between games (until he got nerfed again, but still much better than melee), though there was a big gap.

(There are people who will tell you Samus was approaching mid tier with her various buffs from patches. Do not believe their lies). Ultimate Samus fixes everything that was bad about her in Smash 4, she only got better from patches, and her rise in the tier list is fairly comparable to what Palu and Pac-Man achieved. And you can argue her stocks are only getting higher as Ultimate’s metagame matures. Just a shame about that whole Olimar problem 😢
Pac-man's uptilt change was a straight nerf. It has a stubby hitbox and no longer scoops enemies from behind him for reaction to rolls (it can hardly hit giants in front of him now too because you can't pass through opponents and the ECD making grounded cross ups impossible.) and having that area covered with a fast combo starter without turning was good coverage against defensive options that pac-man lost. Bonus fruit changes, his grab and throws and the engine speed up all override that nerf into more of a balancing tool though.
Your videos are pretty good but I do have some issues when you talk about smash ultimate for one, the game is so subjective tier wise that characters that aren't low tiers, bottom tiers or top 8 could really go almost anywhere. Another thing palu is widely considered a top 8 character at least, so that smashwiki tier list is way off. This is why I think for smash ultimate you should look into top players videos and their opinions on how certain characters rank. Because unlike other smash games, smash ultimate characters for the most part are very subjective with how they're ranked.
