You could argue Zelda in Melee was more overrated than Mario seeing how she was ranked 6-8th in the first tier list, but now she is bottom 3. It's not even that Zelda and Sheik were ranked as if they were the same character seeing how Sheik was seen as top 1
Part of the reason why people thought she was so good was because she could transform into Sheik. If you look at that whole tier list tho, there was plenty of "Overrated" characters lol
Tbh Inkling is pretty much identical to Chrom, as she was once seen as a top 10 character due to her aerials and Side B (Like Chrom's Up B and ground attacks), now turned mid tier, although in this case, it's due to being outclassed by other characters (similarly to R.O.B in brawl), but she's still can be a threat online and even tournaments really.
I’m surprised you never mentioned K. Rool Everyone and their mother put him in high tier til they realized he was big and slow and just not good. He went from high to being bottom 3 until he got enough buffs to be legally considered on steroids in later patches.
@@ZachHonest I’d argue that K Rool however is a more annoying match up then Mac’s since, K Rool doesn’t have many flaws that makes him abysmal to play. Sure K Rool may be big and slow, but the fact that he’s a heavy and can take forever to die, his smash attacks are exceedingly powerful, and he has TWO Spike moves that can be lethal to edgeguard… he certainly is nowhere near as bad as Mac. If anything, K Rool chills in the D Ranks of Smash characters
One notable thing about Ike in Brawl is that he effectively became the cutoff point for Mid tier at one point and was banned from low tier tournaments.
Regarding Sm4sh Mac, I will say that my only smash bros claim to fame is that in mid 2015, my first semester of college, I entered my campus’s free dorm tourney, and somehow made it all the way to 3rd place with Little Mac… it’s been downhill ever since.
A minor thing to address about 64 Ness: he was considered top 3 in the early NTSC tier lists as well regardless of the nerfs. What the nerfs from JPN to NTSC did was ultimately put him in a worse position later down the line when the character would eventually be figured out. To this day, Ness' fall from the NTSC tier list would be the largest proportional tier drop of any character in any Smash game (not counting translating between different games). A funny honorable mention goes to Brawl Zelda and Bowser. Both were considered mid tier characters early on in Brawl, owning to them both receiving many direct buffs going into Brawl. However as time went on, both were relegated to the bottom tiers when it was discovered that their buffs did not fully fix their weaknesses. In the case of Zelda, she was considered to be even worse than Melee Zelda due to both the Lightning Kick nerfs and her translating terribly into Brawl's engine. Important to note is that at the time where Brawl was the current active Smash game, Melee Zelda was not considered the bottom-of-the-barrel character she is seen today, so maybe that version is worse, but it really comes down to deciding which turd smells worse.
do not worry, they never were performed online nor in tourneys. People were either too bad,or the connection was too god awful to even do a basic confirm. The combos in sm4sh were mostly impractical and unrealistic in a competitve enviroment anyway
Agreed lol. I went back to Smash 4 for this video after not playing it for a long time and I realized, "wow the top blastzone is crazy in the game". It's just sooooo low lmao
Yoshi, Ness, and Villager in Smash 4 are also some examples. They never got nerfed that much but they’re mid-tier characters that used to be considered top or high tier. While it was partly because of people learning how to beat them, they also suffered from power creep from DLC and buffed Marth.
Villager and Ness also suffered from both characters eventually losing their best player (Ranai and FOW, respectively). At least in Ness' case, BestNess (Scend), Gackt, and Awestin would pick up the slack for him in the 2018 meta, but Villager without Ranai was largely an abandoned character. Similar thing with Pit/Dark Pit. Considered a top 15 character thanks to Earth, but with Earth's big drop in results and attendance in late 2017/2018 despite picking up Corrin, the character fell off hard perception-wise, a stigma that hasn't shaken up going into Smash Ultimate despite Pit getting buffed in that game.
Little Mac mains in the smash series are the Guilty Gear Strive Faust mains or the Street Fighter V Dan mains of the series. The characters are god awful, lack the things most other members of the roster have, both have way too many bad things than good things going for them, and all of them you need to work harder for rewards that the rest of the cast offer for better payoffs. And another comparison of them, all 3 are very big with the casuals too oddly enough, but despite this the players of all 3 stick with them anyway with the naive and almost delusional belief they will discover something that will make the character the best or one of the best in the game despite it all, which never ends up happening

Ganondorf in Ultimate was also an overrated character. Players thought he was broken at first, but is now seen as the worst character in the game (a similar situation to Smash 4 Little Mac).
Good video but shocked pichu in ultimate never got mentioned. I stand by the belief chromicide should not have been touched. He had a bad recovery so it was justifiable giving him a cheap 0-death like that in a game like ultimate where cheese and good recoveries reign supreme
The nerfs did hurt, but it was clear in retrospect that Pichu was never going to maintain top tier status, or perhaps even high tier status. Even before the nerfs, Pichu was already dropping off in results/representation, as players were not getting the same presence in high level events than during the first two months of the game's release. Outside of VoiD almost immediately dropping the character after the nerfs (who was already expressing distraught over how stressful Pichu was in high level play), the character's results didn't immediately trend off after the nerfs. It was a slow process to reach its current status. Even with buffs later on reverting some of its recoil move nerfs didn't really help Pichu at all. Pichu was overall a character who's meta was developed extremely quickly thanks to new-toy syndrome and its explosive combo potential. It's peak in results/representation was back when we still didn't have a great idea on who is good or weak in the meta, or how the overall meta is going to be like. The truth of the matter is that Pichu was afflicted with two things worse than its nerfs: 1) Players got better in working around its tools, such as f-tilt spam at the ledge (remember that only the move's knockback got nerfed). 2) The punish game of other characters got better optimized or directly buffed in game updates, making what Pichu brings to the table less impressive in comparison while making its already poor longevity worse.
I don't think Chrom was overrated because of how good Chromicide was. After that nerf everyone started saying he was bad, because before that he was a legitimately good character and Chromicide let him get so many cheap Zero to Deaths. I think Inkling was more overrated in early Ultimate. The rest is all true tho.
Chromicide is still there in its entirety, the only difference pre and post patch is chrom falls faster during upb, meaning he dies first Basically means it just stops being viable in a last stock situation What actually happened to chrom was people were generally right in how ridiculously oppressive he was (and still is) onstage, but he dies offstage for literal free, and one minor fuckup can get him offstage (see mr R versus skyjay)
Mario was never Overrated he was Marinated by fox's quick KO moves when using up smash jk but really loved the vid and the editing just keeps getting better.
Also the Belmonts and Inkling in Ultimate. They were consistently top tier in the very first tier lists, and, while Inkling is still kinda viable, the Belmonts are awful. It is pretty interesting to see characters that were once thought to be amazing or even game-breaking, to actually be trash.
Despite the Chromikaze being nerfed, it's still very much possible. You just need to be a stock ahead of your opponent. I still love pulling it off. Chrom is still a very solid character, even now, who shares a lot of strengths with Roy (and against certain characters, he can actually be a better choice than Roy). Soaring Slash is bad, but I don't think that warrants him being so much lower than Roy on Ultimate's first official tier list. He should be in the A- tier at the very least. Roy is better than Chrom, but Chrom is by no means bad.
yea, of course. Glad to see DK coming up. I find it funny because a buffed version of the character in PM, became one of the most iconic characters in that meta.
I was just wondering why Ganondorf is in the very middle of the tiers. Before I get into what I mean, allow me to first put out there that I have been playing for years, and I have watched MANY videos of the tournament masters. My brother and I found out, through years of play, literally EVERY advanced technique in the game, except the wavedash, which we stumbled upon, but wrote off as simply hilarious. I was surprised to find that all the wacky observations we have encountered and adapted are actually defined in the glossary in the sticky topic above! Three of the particularly surprising terms that I could not believe had been widely known and utilized were the Phantom Hit (I just thought I had a glitchy game) and that effect where recovering at the right time from attacks that sent you flying results in an upward boost if you jump out/air dodge/whatever early enough (I cannot remember what it was called in the sticky), and the waveland. Now, I have been using Ganondorf against my brother lately, and he cannot seem to beat me. We think we know why, and we think it puts Ganon at the top of the tiers. I will be brief. Ganondorf has his air forward. We call it 'The Punch.' It has that special hitbox like a sword, hence it goes right through anything except an attack with that same type of hitbox. It does 17% max, is relatively fast executing, has basically instant recovery on a barrier cancel, and is quite massive, killing at rather low percentages. If he misses, he can just do his A punch if the opponent tries to retaliate, or shield/roll. I am telling you, Ganondorf is a crazy meat mountain who crushes bones with many attacks doing 15+%, survives to insane damages thanks to his weight, and has ridiculous horizontal recovery (Double Jump, Ganondorf Kick Down B, ANOTHER Double Jump, ARE YOU SERIOUS, Up B). Next, check his roll. It goes like half screen. It makes him rather fast, nearly eliminating his speed problem on the ground, and a great character when it comes to the defensive game. It pretty much eliminates the need for his wavedash, which, with Ganondorf, who needs to do most of his attacking from hops, is pretty much useless already unless you are looking to smash attack. Wavesmashing, however, in my opinion, is also a bad idea, because, in the time and damage it takes you to actually land a smash, you could have just used The Punch and killed you opponent by then. Even though he has to fight mostly in the air, 3 of his 4 air attacks are pretty fast, and are quite massive. A major advantage he has is that nearly all his attacks move the opponent considerably, and can topple him from 0%, so his opponent gets little to no counterattack opportunity. The only explanation I can find for why he is low on the tiers is that no one has used him seriously. I think he really keeps up, if not tops, the top tier characters. I really do not like to simply shoot my mouth, and I am not one who thinks it right to shower a character in encomium, and never actually prove anything. Is there online for this somewhere, or is that simply wishful thinking? If not, please do not yell at me and stuff until you at least check out The Punch.
