Fellow instructor here, the PRGR is outstanding...I tell all my students it's about 98% as accurate as trackman at 1% of the price! Really quite good. The only note I would make is that when I make club only swings I always find the speed to be a little slower then when I have a ball. Doesn't really matter because you should be using it the same way you demonstrated with the speed stick. Great product.
I was considering this but with some of the strong lofted irons I was wondering when hitting a 29degree 7 should it be set at 7 iron or more accurate set at 8 iron setting .
@@rodneyhickman825 I can't really answer if there is a big difference there but my understanding is just like most radar units the designation of the club is largely about the viewing window of the unit but...it might incorporated approx spin rates into the total distance algo but you should be more interested in carry anyway in which car my guess would be little difference if any... regardless all in all don't think they're is a more accurate unit within several times its price
@@KWCabs thanks so much for the information
That was my finding too. Club only swings (no ball) gives horrible readings ... about 15 - 20mph slower than with a ball. I have returned mine for this reason as I can't always get to the range. Also, it doesn't pick up practice foam balls very well. Will be looking at a different product as I have lost confidence in this one.
Also Made in Japan so hopefully the quality and durability is better than Made in China. Ok I’m a bit biased on products MIJ 😂
For the price it’s an amazing deal. The distance will never be spot on due to the inability of obtaining true backspin, but the club & ball data is almost spot on.
Thanks for adding to my Xmas wish list!
Track man can’t do it for real either
Great video 👍. Looks like PRGR has fixed the original & bad issue with the wedge shots in the original HS-120 and overall, this new HS-130A is still a very afforable and accurate launch monitor. In my opinion, I think for the price, it beats out the SC300i, Mevo and the Garmin and it uses common AAA batteries so I just bought one. This video definitely helped sway my decision especially the wedge shots as the range we have does not have any fixed targets 100 yards and in and this is invaluable to make sure I work on consistent short game shots... THANK YOU 👍
I use the PRGR and I think the reason it sometimes it doesn't pick up some readings is it takes a few seconds to reset. So, the 'waggle' before the strike can mean its still resetting at the time of actual strike. Great piece of kit for pricepoint!
That's a good point Steve. I found the same thing. And if you are working on a drill, say a take-away or impact drill, it will often read that drill movement and then miss the full swing because it hasn't reset in time.
Steve if you don’t mind me asking, was wanting to buy this. But I would use it mostly outside how do you set it up outside if you have used it?
@@imjjtv7428 I use it mainly on the range but simple to use anywhere. Simply place 11/2 to 2 meres behind the ball on a level surface. A range mat is ideal. So easy to use. Just select the club your using and your away!
Hi Ali…great review. I have a Japanese (red) version of this and its a great piece of kit.
Note PRGR is known as “Pro Gear” in Japan.
Just bought the PRGR monitor and the Superspeed C this week as Superspeed were doing a deal if you bought the two together.
Really impressed so far.
Bought them to try and increase my club head spread over the winter. Love the fact that they give you some exercises to do to get the best results, also loads of videos on their site.
Were you successful in building speed? Do you still use the monitor?
Inhabe the PRGR which I bought in this years UK lockdown. Idea for hitting into a net at home and measuring club head amd ball speed progress. I used it to get my carry numbers sorted out and it’s pretty close.
To be honest, the driver swings the PRGR missed aren't ones you want readings for anyhow. Nobody is trying to perfect the miss-hit so having data on those shots is pointless. The hits that matter were all recognized and the numbers were excellent for the price of the unit. Thanks for the video/review.
Bought the Superspeed sticks this past spring & just picked up the PRGR about a week ago & have been using it to measure my swing speed while doing the swing speed training. Haven't taken it to the range yet, but plan to do so this coming week.
Have you noticed that the clubhead speed can change based on how close/far you put the prgr? great vid
I have the original PRGR and I think it's quite accurate, especially on ball speed. It struggles to pick up wedge shots with higher loft however. Seems to be less the case with the new one per your vid. Also, I think the numbers are aligning closer to Trackman than the OG unit. I watched the few comparison vids I could find back then and they weren't quite as close as your numbers here. I may consider upgrading.
This is a great review. Launch monitors outside on a nice 98 degree day are not idea says my use only when it’s less than 84 degrees iPhone 📱 😂
That is precisely the reason I bought the newer PRGR, as my clubhead speed is way down this year.
I've validated the fact that this unit will register clubhead speed without a ball. Interestingly, the algorithms used will also often calculate ball speed on a "bare" swing, which I think is a hoot.
The yardages is produced on actual shots are pretty close to what I can measure on actual range targets. Did he mention that it's portable, as in fits in your pocket?
You can shift its mode to either yards or meters, if you prefer metric, so there's that.
That is an update from the previous model ( yards only), but it is an easy conversion to do ( deduct 10% of yards = metrs)
Was just about to buy a 120a off ebay till I seen this. Ordered a new 130a. Great vid, well done. Feel I dodged a bullet 😂
This is a cool wee device, I can do 10 swings in a row without a ball and they are always within 1-2mph, 125mph clubhead speed with the driver for now but this will push me to get into the 130+mph range
Ive got the old version of PRGR and it does show to much clubhead speed compared to a trackman. Tested it several times. My normal speed is 113-115 and PRGR shows about 4 mph faster constantly, but if i go at it, and swing as hard as i can at about 117-118, it the difference becomes even bigger
But its still very very good compared to the price of it, and exellent for speed traning
Yeah I only use the ball speed data as the club head speed always a couple mph higher than it should be. I think the reason the prgr club head speed is too fast is because it reads peak speed of club head, meaning the toe of the club. The heel moves the slowest thru impact. Looks like the new unit may have corrected this bias.
Great video. Instead of shelling out $500-$600 for a swing Caddie or Garmin I can now budget a launch monitor and swing sticks for the same amounts.
This is just like what I've seen with my PRGR Black. It's a little generous with clubhead speed and carry, but ball speed tends to be quite close, compared to what I see on Trackman. Sure, it misses a shot now and then and sometimes you get a number that's clearly way off - but considering the price and the size - it's really a great device. Because it's not measuring strike location or spin, it can't really tell when you've hit a spinny floater, so the carry numbers are not reliable all the time. But for what it is - very good.
I have the previous version of the PRGR Black, the one you tested a number of months ago. I too tested it against a Trackman and had similar results. I haven't had a wildly incorrect read like your first shot but generally the PRGR reads chs 0 to 2 mph higher than TM while ball speed was pretty much the same, returning a slightly lower smash factor. These differences are very similar to the differences between a GCQuad and the TM. The PRGR can't get a read on very small chip shots under about 5 yards but for anything longer I found it very realistic. I found carry distances to read quite close to TM on chip shots of 10 yards or more all the way up to mid irons (5 iron). But the faster the ball speeds get the greater the distance disparity, although the biggest difference I got on the driver was 7 yards carry. This is a great tool for gapping and working out your partial shot, pitch shot and chipping carry distances. The ability to read non-contact chs is a great function for speed training too.
Let me guess before I watch…track your swing speed without hitting a ball? I have one and LOVE it. It’s pretty accurate. HAH! I was right. I use it with the speed stix as I’m coming off my second hip replacement and trying to get the swing speed back up to around 100mph…PB is 103 with the light sticks and it’s already paying off. So easy to use, not only on the range (where I am now using a Mevo), but also when you’re playing since it doesn’t require a precise setup. Just set the club, pop it down around 4 feet back, and swing away.
I use mine for my Super Speed training too. Great device.
@@nupezb The difference is the only thing associated with my golf game that is “super” is either a “super” huge slice, or a “super” huge hook…”Super” and “speed” are never used in the same sentence with my game. LOL
Recently bought a practice net to improve my swing consistency. I've narrowed my search down to the prgr, blast motion or tittle X.
“It can do some the the Trackman can’t”? Not Bankrupt you?
Lol
😂😂😂🤣
I just ordered the new 2021 version. I hope it works in my basement next setup. I don't have alot of room between mat and net. However I'm most interested in picking swing speeds even with out a ball.
How did this work in your basement. Similar setup for me as well.
Hello Ali, I just discovered your channel and I really enjoy the content and information.
My question is about this newest version of the PRGR vs the original model. What are some of the key differences you have noticed between the two? I understand consistency will be a factor no matter what, but other than that is the upgrade worth it? Money isn't always a factor, but I'd rather not spend the money unless you see a huge difference overall.
To me it's about the consistency after taking 10 to 15 shots with one club, then taking those shots and removing the huge (obviously outliers) and using the rest of the numbers to get the mean average and work on my game from there.
In your opinion would the upgrade help me be significantly more precise?
Thank you very much.
Just waiting for my PRGR black. I hope it helps a newbie to golf in knowing my carry distances and swing speeds with different clubs while I practice on the range and backyard.
@@johnmcallister8664 Yes I am using it. Its awesome for getting to know the swing and club head speed.
The ball speed and smash factor are the ones which really help you knowing about the quality of the strikes.
The distances are indicative and not exact but really nice. Truly worth the money.
I found the same thing as you the speed sticks increased my swing speed 9 miles per hour but my distance actually decreased. This proved to me that strike is actually king. If you have the time to hit hundreds of balls per day like the pros, maybe this would work, but for the average golfer working on strike with some foot spray would probably gain you more.
Too small of a sample size. For 99% of the time more mph equals lower scores.
It looks like there is a max of 5% variation between them. So, if you are gapping wedges or working on 40-120yds you could be a max of 2-3 yards out? Less than 10 feet? And if you are using it indoors, the transition to getting outdoor distances would be an easy task. Interesting...very interesting.
I have the new version but a month after I got it the range I go to installed Top tracer (haven't been for about 5 weeks now due to chest infection, not covid related ) but next time I go will do comparison.
I've tested it and can say its very comparable. Ball speed and carry seems on point if you look at the top tracer actual numbers, not the ones displayed which take into account/compensates for the range ball.
Ive had my PRGR for a year and its pretty good. Air swings are fine just dont hit an empty tee as it skews the numbers. I would prefer metric being in Oz.
I bought the prgr a year ago and ended up smashing it at the range as it was a peice of junk. Yes sometimes it would put out accurate numbers but probably only like 30 to 40% of the time. The rest of time it would either not read the strike or it would put up crazy unrealistic numbers. Also mine didn’t pick up the correct clubhead speed without hitting a ball. It wasn’t even close to accurate on that
Was you hitting an empty tee on free swings or was it picking up sounds from another golfer?
Ive had mine a year and its pretty good. Ive allowed others to try and share with my wife. Only complaint is its yards whereas we are metric in Oz.
@@midlifebiker7424 no i wasn’t hitting an empty tee. Just taking practice swings with all clubs before hitting balls at range. It def wasn’t picking up other golfers sounds. It was like that from day 1 everytime i used it. Never worked
Where does it measure the speed of the swing? If the ideal 'speedy' place is after the ball, does it just measure there? Or is it just reporting the fastest speed somewhere in the swing?
Hi! Ali, the GARMIN Approach R10 has a lot more modules than PRGR. I nearly bought the PRGR from Amazons but always unavailable. Now the GARMIN R10 is available ,although 300 pounds more expensive but we only buy this sort of training/practise assist gadget once, might just as well buy a better one. Just out of curiosity, would you test and compare the GARMIN R10 to Trackman and/or PRGR?
Just like me your contact suffered after using the Superspeed sticks. Sadly for me it also carried over to the course.
It seems that the track man being 5 feet further back then PRGR it’s measuring a little longer...
Have you done v1 v v2 v trackman4? I’d be curious to see those numbers.
I watch Lot of these videos, they always compare to the expensive vs cheap why never trackman vs GC Quad, and are these really the most accurate??
Gc theoretically will be better because it can actually do spin
I don't trust its carry distance since it doesn't track ball flight.
Other than that its amazing value for those who want to gauge their progress in clubhead speed and any other number are for confidence builder only since its estimates are best case scenario.
I skulled my drive with really no launch that goes nowhere yet it say I carried the ball 294 so very optimistic carry numbers.
Does SC300 give more accurate carry distance?
Thank you. PRGR or Garmin R10? I would like a budget launch monitor but which one would you recommend?
Have you tried experimenting with the prgr either a Little closer or a little further from the ball?. Maybe there is a positioning issue that might be more exact with the trackman
Putting it on a cheap tripod, has the screw hole on the bottom, will help loads.
Just got the new PRGR!!!
Where can I buy the lead on the ball? can you provide a link
Interesting. May need to get myself an early Christmas present.
Can you set the lofts for each club on this PRGR launch monitor???
No. It measures club speed and ball speed only. Distance is extrapolated from a look-up table. However, the distances are pretty good for keeping you in the ballpark. The true beauty of this device is for Overspeed training to be able to measure your clubhead speed.
What code should I use for a Driver?
recommended to use a special ball for radar, capture of data will be more accurate
Will their be a new model coming out for 2022?
We have similar ball speeds & yet my carry is much further. So I ask what driver are you using?& perhaps what elevation above sea level are you? I’m at 250m above sea level,& use a ping lst driver for comparison
What’s your Cary and speeeds
Are there any visual differences between the new model and old?
bigger screen (shows club speed, ball speed, smash factor, and distance); previous model shows only 3 metrics at a time; club and ball speed, and then you toggle between distance or smash. The control panel also is different
Any idea how and where to get it in the EU (not Britain)?
got the new one and love it, best pressie i've bought myself.
Hi , The prgr from your channel is at regular price. Is there a discount code ? ($229.00 reg price)
Does this show the shot shape too?
No. It only shows the numbers for the 5 data points - club head speed, ball speed, smash factor (calculated), carry distance (calculated) and total distance (calculated).
Do you need to enter the degree of the club to get an accurate read ? As opposed to an arbitrary number like 7 (iron) ?
I have the 2020 model unit ( Mark 1) you don't really need enter every club solely for checking the log store of shots store about 50 shots , only for your own reference. At home I use a white board and write up the average of every 10 shots at every method. Wedges > Irons > woods.
Time flies when you have one too.. Great sessions too..
Yes and No. The club number is really only for logging data and calculating distances. It has no bearing on the club head speed reading.
Ali Great post mate. any chance of a Garmin R 10 review.
I’d love to
How accurate are these launch monitors, because I went on one on a driving range and it said my average shot was around 120 yards
Depends which one
Does the PRGR tracks the distance in meters or only in yards?
yes
Sorry you can can to meter or yards
Does the PRGR connect to any software for playing a course simulator or driving range simulator? Thanks.
Nope but I believe it is worth it and is really accurate tested it on the range and against my friends track man
No
Can it measure your low point? I am using your videos to improve my ball striking and I would like to measure how many inches after the ball
No
I’d love to See trackman 4 vs Garmin r10
'Golf Simulator Videos' has done a Uneekor Eye XO vs Garmin R10. The Uneekor is a pretty high-end camera-based unit.
Hi Ali, I picked up a PRGR, set it up for my 7 iron. I'm in my 70's and I only hit my 7 about 135 yards. The PRGR is telling me my swing speed is 55 and my total yards is 103. It is remarkably consistent, swing speed stays between 55-59. I'm hitting a ball into a net. Any thoughts on the low distance number?
Try putting it on a really small tripod I’ve heard that it works better on readings. Hope this helps you.
@@joegarza1835 Thanks. It seem to be remarkably consistent, regardless of minor height variations. I will say, I'm getting higher readings with Driver. Initially, I was measuring with 7 iron.
The PRG is also about three feet closer than the trackman
CHS without hitting a ball is about 20 mph lower on PRGR. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I've mess around with the setup, still no luck.
have you tried elevating the device? Sometimes placing it on a sleeve of balls helps (there's a female screw-in on the bottom where you can attach it to a tripod).
I have tried elevating it. Only accurate reading is when I am hitting a ball. CHS without a ball involved is 15-20 slower. Both same swing. 🤷🏾♂️
@@ybrownson is this indoors?
@@ybrownson does this apply to all your clubs?
@@prohopgolf5611 indoor and outdoor. I haven't hit the ball indoors with it, but outdoors with a ball pretty spot on. But yes, all clubs and superspeed sticks CHS is about 20 off what it should be reading when no ball is involved.
Seems like if you don't hit the ball perfectly it doesn't give you reading.. Was thinking about buying it until I saw that...
I'm sold.
Nice gadget. When i tried to buy one, it seemed utterly unavailable. Even at the manufacturers it’s out of stock.
its in stock on USA amazon ... also try eBay. There is an authorized dealer who sells brand new devices and ships to other countries in addition to USA
Is there a portable affordable monitor that will measure low point distance from ball? Low point distance for me is far ,far more important than club head speed.
Any that show angle of attack
That would need to be a camera based Launch Monitor afaik. Or at the very least dots on the balls and clubs since that could be a vertical (and horizontal) reference. At least that is how i understand it. If you want any sort of accuracy in angle of attack, dynamic loft and such things, GC Quad or Trackman is the way to go if you want portability.
Having said that, you can't hit longer without increasing clubhead speed if you hit the ball correctly (gets you better ballspeed, yay) in the first place (smash).
Short answer. There isn't anything out there that you are loking for.
@@marcuszettergren8885
Hi Marcus
Thank you for the reply. Ali Taylor in his videos has frequently referenced the low point distance from the ball - either a negative or positive number depending on whether low point is in front of or behind the ball measured in fractions of inches as provided by whatever monitor he uses. Do there must be a monitor that provides this specific information.
@@pohoresky Sadly, none of the systems anywhere near this price range provide that data. What do you call affordable?
Anyone who has trouble with it picking up shots. I have it on a small tripod and it has almost never missed picking up a shot. Have the 2021 version.
I have the 2020 (2019?) version and just put it on the ground. It has never missed a read. I did notice Ali had the 2021 unit sitting a box. Maybe the new unit has difference positioning requirements.
I just received the new version. When I just use the club for swing speed and when the ball is hit and swing speed is displayed there is a huge difference. Anyone else have this problem?
How big a change?
Yes. I returned mine for this reason. It seems to be a common fault. My club only swing speed is 15 - 20mph slower than with a ball in place.
Does anyone have the Americanish translation for this?

After watching this video, my conclusion is it is not good enough. Yes, I am working on the club speed, and everyday the improvement is like 0.1 mph increase. This device disagrees with Trackman by 2 mph on some shots. How can I even trust the reading. BTW, I have Trackman, I don't the trackman either. Trackman may be the best, but it is still not accurate enough.
At least with TM4 seeing strike can help
Keith, why is precise speed data so important? Surely it is the trend in your speed that is key. I don't care if I'm actually swing 112 mph or 116 mph on any given swing. What I care about is, regardless of which unit I use, this week my average swing speed is greater than it was last week.
