    Okay, seriously THANK YOU. I bought what was labeled as, and I incorrectly believed to be a NATO band, that I now realize is a 5-ring ZULU. I wondered what that extra ring was for and was very confused that no one addressed this. Thank you so much for this video as this helped me tremendously.

    Something a lot of people don't know, is that on a true standard Nato the double underpass' only purpose is to inhibit the watch from sliding off the strap when not on the wrist. The five ring does that too, and has the added capability to relieve strain on the springbars when used like you describe. Thin fabric three ring Zulus WILL let your precious mechanical watch slide off and fall hard on your very hard floor while you admire it holding it up by the buckle... But with that in tjhe back of your mind a 3 ring Zulu is what most people actually prefer in 'civilian' use. Advantages of three ring Zulus (just cutting off the second underpass part of a 4 or 5 ring Nato is standard procedure in my house) is that the buckle can sit nicely under the wrist instead of on the side (or basically wherever you like for that matter) and the watch sits closer to the wrist. Waaay more elegant in any regard possible IMO. But: make your own decision, just know you have a choice in the first place.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH! Only person that actually knows how to put on a 5 ring strap properly. I recently purchase a zulu strap, not knowing it was a 5 ring strap.It felt awkward, what surprised me that the owner didn't know how to put a 5 ring strap on properly. You are the best man.

    Not sure if you realize this but this is literally the only video I've found anywhere telling how to properly strap a 5 ring Zulu. Could you please make a video just putting on a Zulu. Start to finish on the wrist.
    I'm 90% sure I finally have it on correctly now after watching your video. However it's kind of a pain in the ass to strap on. I have 8-8 1/4" wrists. I am on the very last hole on the band (Obris Morgan 5 ring zulu) with about an inch of tongue behind it. Does this sound about right for my size wrist?
    Thank you for you very informative video. It's literally the only CORRECT video I've seen so far.

      Hey grumpy,
      I am glad this helped. Let me look at throwing onto the to-do list a video such as what you describe.
      For the length question, could you grab a measurement of some lengths such as:
      length of nylon from buckle end to the end of the long strap (not including buckle ring)
      length of nylon from buckle end to the end of the short strap (not including buckle ring)
      I can compare these to ones I have here, including the ones I make, in case I can offer any alternative source for something longer (but I think what you describe sounds about right).
      Feel free to private message me with these details so we can discuss further.

    NATO means northern Atlantic treaty organisation, I see a lot of people using the keepers on the buckle side wrong as well, they just fold the strap back under both keepers when you are supposed to fold over the top one and under the bottom one like a double D ring belt

    G10 is the shortened version of Form G1098 which is used for issue and control of V&A (Valuable and Attractive) items such as the CWC W10 watch. In the HM Forces NATO straps were normally issued in Light grey and are also used on other issue watches such as the Pilots Chronograph and also wrist worn Radiation Dosimeters..

    Really appreciate the detailed explanations.
    The one thing I don’t get about the correct five ring Zulu technique, is that it just becomes so bulky it the watch becomes neither comfortable nor good lookkng.
    But maybe this is also because I’m using it on a 37mm SNK

    Is it just me or are no 5 ring straps long enough to actually fit them properly? I've got a fairly normal 7.75" wrist, and I bought supposed "super XL length" 5 ring zulu which are about 300mm / 12" plus rings, and I'm on the last hole which is too tight and there isn't enough tail to tuck it properly.

    • @JaysAndKays
      @JaysAndKays  7 лет назад

      I suggest you try using with your original springbars first. In case the NATO runs too loose through the lugs and doesn't grab, you can swap the springbars with larger diameter if needed. I have a Hamilton that was gifted to me over 20 years ago and it came with a canvas NATO. The original springbars are ~1.8mm diameter. It was my first mechanical after having only digital casio as a kid. It is one of my favorites and I haven't changed a thing about it.

    Hopefully you receive this message. Unfortunately I have to base my watch purchase decisions on what I can find that fits. I’m not a fan of metal link bands as when my wrists swell I’ve broken numerous bands. I’ve been lucky enough to find a company that sells XL bands for my I-watch...but have found that I’m not really a fan of the watch. I’m looking at purchasing a Suunto Core All Black, but my search for XL bands has turned up empty. My wrist measures 9.5 inches. The I-watch bands that I have were sold as 10 inch bands, yet I have 1.5 to 2 inches extra. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

      @JaysAndKays  5 лет назад

      Hey Doug. I can definitely get you sorted out. If you contact me in the Etsy story, I can tell you what we can kit for your Core and that is sufficiently long enough for your 9.5" wrist. This is no problem.

      Yo man, many metal dive bracelets have ratcheting micro adjustments on the clasps. Look into strap code. My wrists swell as well, and i hate oversized floppy sloppy metal bracelets on watches. A nice after market with straight ends that has a ratcheting micro adjustment strap will fit good in the morning and can loosen in different increments to allow for swell later in the day or on humid days. Hope you see this. It was a real game changer for me.

    good video. you didn't explain how to do the final buckling onto wrist. I have some length left over, I tucked it under both loops, then over the one loop, under the other. strikes me as klutzy. So, not a perfect vid, but still merits thumbs up

    • @JaysAndKays
      @JaysAndKays  7 лет назад

      I usually just run the extra under both rings rather than do an over-under. I pivot the rings up pointing away from the strap, then u-turn the extra strap under itself, then pivot the rings to lay them flat against the strap. I find this as a personal preference to be cleaner appearance than the over-under.

    How about genuine leather HD NATO and NATO straps? Are those worth it? I'm just asking because I've never owned a real watch before and I want to buy an SNK809 (or another SEIKO model in 40 mm dial range- i have a 19cm diameter wrist), so I wanna know if those leather straps will fit.

    • @JaysAndKays
      @JaysAndKays  5 лет назад

      I like my leather nato and zulu a lot. 19cm wrist is rather normal, from my experience. The case on your Seiko is not relatively large either. Without knowing the dimensions on the strap you are considering, I couldn't say for sure but sounds like common strap options should be OK. You can see an example of some leather NATO in a couple other of my videos such as these:

    • @JaysAndKays
      @JaysAndKays  5 лет назад

      the rings are sewn in. strap ring hardware kits are available from various retailers. while I supposed it technically COULD be done to remove original hardware of the strap and then replace with new hardware, if you leave the stitching as it is, then you'd have to spread the new rings far enough apart to get them into the strap and then press the rings back together. you might be able to that last step well enough so things look normal but I'm not sure.

      Kind of depends on the particular strap and its lengths. User watch case size, and user wrist size are variables as well ... is the short end of strap with keeper long enough for properly fitting in event watch case is XL, or is the long run of strap long enough with enough holes for folks with huge wrist circumference...etc yada yada

      I know exactly what you mean. Roboprob just made a similar comment. Depending on the length of the shorter strap, those rings might end up right on the bone or somewhere else uncomfortable. If the pair of rings are not stitched too tight, you could perhaps shift them over one another between leading and lagging then see if that helps to displace the pressure point.

      Not true. As mentioned, 'NATO' was because it is a NATO Stock Number. Not much more to say about it than that. G10 is because of the form they had to fill out. NATO, NATO-G10, G10 are all synonymous.

      thicker material, more robust hardware, and an extra keeper ring... presuming that person selling you a NATO is not selling a ZULU but calling it a NATO (discussed in the vid)
