I have owned BMWs for over 20 years and never had an issue with any of them other than really minor stuff that was out of BMWs control, ie. Spark Plugs were defective from Bosch, and a shifter that needed reprogramming. I have owned 3, 4 and 5 series cars.

We had no issues aside from the sunshade on the Mercedes (under warranty) but the specter of questionable reliability always will hang over you once warranty ends. Both manufacturers have gone down in reliability and quality (so has VW and their products). Mercedes once a heavy, sturdy and reliable car. BMW, a disposable toy with little longevity. Lexus, Acura may not have the social status cache of Mercedes or BMW, but I like reliability in a luxury car.

When I purchased an ML350 I was filled with great anticipation of a great driving experience. I don't think I have driven a car which the handling impressed me greatly. After making a drive of 350km and stopping for a coffee my shock at coming back to find the battery wouldn't start the car was a shock. This happened over 5 times in as many months, each time no fault with the car was found. A new battery was installed each time (which they refused to warranty after 2 batteries. I was driving away with a $1,000 invoice each time with no resolve to the problem. The 6th time I got a boost drove, to the dealership when I explained what happened "We'll check it out!" My response was "No!" I'm driving of the lot with a different car! I drove off the lot with a 2012 Ford Escape which has been the least expensive car I've owned to date. 4 years on I have only installed new winter tires, a new battery and schedule oil and filter changes. I dread to think how many $,1000's it would have cost me to keep the Mercedes which to be honest was the least reliable/costliest car in over 50yrs of car ownership.

That’s how German cars are. They look cool and everyone shows off with it but owning it is a huge drain in your bank account. Unless you’re filthy rich and money is no problem, then owning one is no issue but even if I was rich, I’d be tight that I have to keep spending money on repairs and it wastes my times

I always loved BMW’s. As a kid I use to push BMW cars on the floor. My family owned BMW’s. I have an E60 I owned over 12 years and still loving it. I am looking for an X5 the 2018 model Sdrive 35i. I think that body style look better than the G05. I sat in the G05 it felt smaller than the F15. I was worried about the B engines hearing about cracked Heat Management Modules, oil filter housings pouring coolant , more plastic under the engine than the N55. It’s too soon for me to try a B engine, I hear a lot of good things about it, but those vehicles are still under warranty is the reason why we don’t hear the bad.

I currently own a 2013 Bmw e92 m3, 2022 Bmw x7 x drive40i, and a 2013 mercedes g63 amg. I think bmw is made for sport car enthusiasts, and mercedes is built for luxury. In my opinion, I think reliability is based more toward the specific year, model, and the owner of the vehicle.
In short other than my x7 I wouldn't buy a non m bmw car. The standard 3 series, for whom I've owned several, aren't worth the maintenance costs. I wouldn't buy a standard mercedes either. I'd rather drive a lexus as a daily driver, which I own a 2012 lexus ct200h for my work commute. Toyota products lack luxury and sport, but is best for daily driving and won't ever leave you with any maintenance headaches. You can really drive lexus to the ground without remorse.
    In short
    S class > 7 series for luxury
    M > AMG for sport
Lexus > Bmw/Mercedes for daily driver.
If anyone is still reading lol I've owned my s65 e92 m3 for 6 years now. Not a single leak or issue. In stark contrast I've owned a 2012 x5m and it has left an unending bad taste in my mouth regarding all 4.4L twin turbo v8 bmws. My 2013 g63 amg has been a nightmare as well including leaking turbos. I think the m157 is a brilliant engine, but I feel like the previous owner possibly kept the car outdoors because I do have a rust problem under certain seals.
If anyone wants a good German engine, go naturally aspirated and never buy the first release year of a refresh. I think Bmw straight six engines such as the b58 have proven to be fairly good, but still too new to tell if it's a true winner. I don't think I'll be buying any new mercedes because of their 4 cyclinder forced induction route they've taken. I am hesitant to even trust German electric cars. We owned a 2013 i3 as well and it always had a few hiccups.

Good review. Relatively objective. The rust discussion was interesting. I'd not realized that because I only lease new cars. But you did title this as "Which IS the Best Luxury Car," not "Which was the Best Luxury Car."
In that vein, I'm not sure about comparing an out of production old $48K X2 to a $70K new model GLC 43 is really objective. But I know you were concerned primarily the aesthetics in that case. The X2 interior is old BMW from the lowest US model made (X1 X2). It still has a DVD player. You should have used a newer X3 M40, or something with a new-gen BMW interior that's on par year and price-wise with a GLC43. You also didn't go into how cheap the new interior materials of Benz' are. They show very well. The interiors are spectacular to look at, but they creak, vibrate, and the plastics are crispy hard scratchy. The new BMW materials, since about 2015, when Rolls got involved in BMW interior, have had excellent materials, and superb fit and finish.
I'm also not sure concentrating on the ancient N54 for 20% of the video was really appropriate unless, again, you changed the title of the video. In that case you should have brought up how bad the MLs and C-Classes were and how dreadful the Mercedes V-6 and V-6 turbo were. Our last ML required $26,000 in warranty work when we turned it in off lease. Our GLs and GLSs were always in the shop for some bizarre drivetrain issue. That stopped when Benz went back to the inline 6. See, going back in time doesn't help either brand's case.
It was a good video, but having owned many many of both brands, they both suffer from trying to advance tech that's too complicated, too soon. Reliability-wise that doesn't really play into things these days, but it certainly was the case in the past.
The real problem with Mercedes right now is the pricing. A max-options 4-cylinder C300 can reach $70K, where as a totally maxed out 330 is $54K (with MSport and adaptive suspension). And that isn't even a truly disparate example.
I expect more out of Benz for the 20%-30% per model premium they charge over like BMW models. They don't crash better. They don't drive better. They aren't as efficient. They don't have better tech. I guess it's that silver star...
One model that defies everything you and I have both said is the S-Class. The S-Class always has been on an entirely different level in almost every way than every other brand model---Rolls, Aston, and Bentley included.

I’ve a BMW X3 G01 Msport package, so, the car is great and have no issues. The unique problem is the crazy brake dust after few miles and the black piano from the dashboard is very sensible for scratchs (even with microfiber towels). The Mercedes GLC 300, GLS 450, C300 and others (except the genuine AMG versions) is already come from the factory equipped with ceramic brake pads (ATE or TRW). So, this is a milestone between these two german brands. BMW need to pay attention to this feature: ceramic brake pads are much better than semi-metalic, with better brake capabilities, long-life for rotors and much less brake dust. Keep your eyes on this. They want more visit to their dealers and more brake parts to sell. That’s why ceramic brake pads is still not assembly in all cars.

For me the comparison comes to the generation of the cars and the model level. For example with the if we look at the medium size sedan level it would be C-class vs 3 series. When BMW had the E46 and Merc had the W203, the E46 was better in many ways than the Merc. Then Merc came back hard with the w204 which I think was better than the E90 BMW. The C63 of that generation was simply Beast in every possible way!
I must say though Merc is really about style and 'class' while Beemer is for the enthusiasts and extroverts.

Pretty damn good objective comparison! As a veteran of both, I think you are spot on! I might add that BMW (not sure about Mercedes) many years ago, had to increase their basic warranty to account for all the crap that was falling apart. In other words, they put their money where their mouth is, and forced themselves to build in more reliability - the cost was on them, with these extended warranties. I also had a first-year 550 8 cylinder twin turbo. It ATE oil. I got out of it within a year. They kept saying it would get better! Ha! Saw that one coming. You can’t beat the Mercedes interiors. Soft leather, but the crap DOES fall apart, even worse than the sticky buttons on the old BMWs. All that said, I am currently in a BMW X5…and have had zero issues. The last few years, I’ve gone back to BMW, BUT, don’t you think that the general public PERCEIVES Mercedes to be in an altogether higher class of automobile than a BMW? Maybe I’m wrong, and I have had several of both, but it seems that people (even me) kinda perceive Mercedes to be higher up the food chain. And, it was my experience that the required maintenance (not covered by Mercedes) was more expensive at the dealership. Hence, my Merc was more expensive to own. Your thoughts?

@@jldp24 Well if we are talking about cost, yes BMW do depreciate and can be cheap to buy. But good luck maintaining it, as Marc stated before $150 for a rubber hose ridiculous. Lexus do have a luxury interior, that of course is subjective but from what i have seen their interiors are well made. In terms of performance depends what you buy a luxury car for. Lexus are excellent cruisers and extremely comfortable, one of the definitions of luxury.

For the last 20 years, I’ve owned and driven Lexus, Mercedes, Audi and even Porsche and Ferrari. I just put a new order for Mercedes last week. I test drove BMWs and never desired to own one.
It’s just my preference I guess.
