If a car costs 50-100K new, can you be really surprised that it might cost a little bit more to repair than a car that cost less? I spent $400.00 on an alternator for my 2003 BMW X5 last week. It's a big 'ol heavy 150A thing that is actually water cooled. I'm not the least bit surprised it costs what it does, nor will I complain about it. It stands to reason that it should cost more than the run-of-the-mill 100A alternator in my old 1988 Jeep Cherokee. When you consider production numbers, type, and design it makes sense.

In Europe it's not unusual to see BMW e46, e39, e60 etc. with crazy mileages, especially the diesels they just run and run without major problems, follow the preventative maintenance schedule, change oil at 10-12000 km's (that's: 6-8k miles) and it will run forever. Mercs are the same, people often still drive 190E/D from early 1990's, plenty have over 500.000km and still running w/o issues or high expenses.

Also now BMW South Africa are selling water pipes from china which started failing after 2 years whereas the original was swopped out as preventative maintenance and hadnt failed yet after 18years. It was marked made in Romania, the markings on the new pipe were not the same and i guessed China but BMW South Africa refused to answer me. Now i buy german made parts which are not from OEM BMW because the OEM BMW sell chinese crap. I moved from WA to Sacramento, CA. Tons of people here have Mercedes and BMW cars, even in poor neighborhoods. The Mercedes dealer here has some type of remodeling going on outside. Probably expansion. The guy I park next to has had the same problem on his late model Mercedes 3x in 3 years. The left headlight and left taillight stay on when the car is off.

My previous one made it to 150,000 miles and my current 2016 320i hasn't had any issues with it and I've put on about 60,000 miles now. Not one thing has broken. I do put the best fuels, oils, lubricants in my cars and never miss any recommended or suggested maintenances on any of my cars. Sad to hear many others have had negative experiences with the brand, but it does make me wonder if everyone is keeping up with the car needs to keep running problem free.

The reliability is skewed because high-performance cars are typically unreliable. Things like the S63 and AMG GT. The C Class and GLS to name a few have above average reliability. They are very easy to diagnose as long as you have the equipment. They do cost more but its worth it to some people. You do need to find a good specialty mechanic with the proper diagnostic software package and parts suppliers though. Buy an off lease with 30K something Kilometers and keep until it starts breaking down. Comes out pretty inexpensive.

I must disagree, cars like the 3.0L and 3.2L Acura NSX are just as reliable as a Honda Accord. 0-60mph in 5.0sec, which was quite acceptable for a sportscar in 1990 when it came out (rather outclassed by 2005 when it ended production though). Maybe if Mercedes cars weren't so heavy, they could achieve high performance with smaller engines! ;)

I am not rich as well so the parts that I've replaced looked quite okay for me even though its a merc. It is a everyday car for me so I go to work with it and I have the smallest Engine 2,2. I am not interested in how fast it is so it works great for me.

I owned a number of both cars and the secret to keeping them running is proper maintenace.
Take them to back street garages and they'll go down quicker than a 10 dollar hooker.
My 560SEC was 20 years old when I sold it. My last Mercedes had 150,000 miles on it when I sold it.
The back street garage is the GP of the car world. If you have a cold or a sprain your GP can offer you treatment. If you have anything more serious he refers you to a cardiologist or ENT specialist.
The difference with back street garages is they don't have the required equipment but insist they can do it anyway.
If Mercedes and BMW were properly maintained they would last a lifetime.
If you're going to buy the ultimate driving machine and expect it to last, of course the maintenance is going to be more expensive than your Corolla. Same with Mercedes.
If you can't afford the maintenance you can't afford the car.
As for brittle plastic that's usually a result of overheating. Another symptom of a badly maintained vehicle.

I definitely agree with you Scotty. I tow a lot of broken down German cars. A 2011 bmw I towed last night had around 100,xxx miles. The lady bought it a few months prior and with in a few weeks of owning it her starter went out as well that it needed brakes. She found out how expensive those repairs were and even though she bought it without a warranty she was able to get the dealer to pay for it. But last night the reason for her tow was that the car had stopped running.
