    This is coming from the Splatoon community. The SPLATOON community. You know, the community with some of the most inclusivity of LGBTQ and neurodivergence, and yet some people still think that ridiculing black and asian people is *funny?* We ought to be ashames of ourselves.

      Maybe my internet exposure is a bit too limited to say anything (I haven't had twitter for the past year or so and have rarely touched traditional social media), but it feels less that too many people are comfortable being racist, but more people letting it happen, like Gem said. It's difficult to change someone who is racist, yeah, but outright ignoring them or letting it slide might be more disgusting than the racism itself. By letting it exist, you're practically racist yourself by deciding that such a bad act of humanity is completely fine.

      @gregvs.theworld451 19 дней назад +6

      @@squiddu True, but I could also argue umbreonfan's point that people are getting more comfortable being racist... asterisk.
      I think generally speaking most people aren't racist, but far right fascism has been on the rise across many countries these days, America isn't the only place dealing with it right now, and the small minority of outright racists tend to use the anonymity of the internet to their advantage to say the stuff they wouldn't dare irl. As you mentioned, add to that people who aren't so quick to cut racism out of their communities, or if the mods themselves support racist behavior, and account for new members of those communities who might not be aware of the racist dogwhistles but it's seemed in the community culture and it gets absorbed gradually by association, the language they use, "just jokes", etc., and all those compounding factors can lead to an impression racism is becoming a bigger problem in online and gaming spaces, and in some cases it does breed more people feeling okay to be racist. Ignoring racist behavior signals to racists they'll be safe in those communities.
      That said, I think gaming in general hasn't had a great history of standing by minorities in their space, and it's good we're moving in the direction of supporting marginalized identities and having these conversations. That said, if and as gaming moves towards becoming a more inclusive space, the bigots who previously found shelter will suddenly feel (rightfully) attacked and go to more extreme lengths and rhetoric to protect "their" space, which in the short term can expose a lot of rot and make a community look like it's gotten a lot worse before it starts to look better.

It's definitely the kind of thing that makes your brain start thinking, "These aren't my people. I don't feel safe. I need out." The last thing we need is for Splatoon, a game so welcoming to a variety of diverse minority communities, to push those people away. And to that effect, it's our job as members of the community to learn how to respect one-another and take these lessons to heart.

      As a white person, I think that the main reason why certain groups get targeted is because of what people learn at school about history, or prejudice bestowed upon them by their parents. If their parents acted that way, they would too. That doesn't make it ok though, it is still disgusting and horrid to think that people acknowledge this as a "normal" way of acting towards people. It really shits me that people just cannot accept everyone and they just HAVE to be racist. I also hate the fact that white people do not speak up about this, it's really inconsiderate and disrespectful to everyone, making places not feel safe for some people. (Not trying to pull the victim card) But as someone who was constantly bullied every day at school for many, many years, even though its not quite the same thing, I somewhat understand what it feels like to be belittled for certain traits of yourself. It can make places which should be safe, turn into places that aren't.

    Along the left side of the locker wall, place the Sunken Scroll 06 sticker (upside down so that the crab guy will be covered by one of the later steps) to make the black stripe, then cover the lower half of it with the LH-RTMP sticker for the white stripe (you’ll need to put about half of it off the locker to get the edges aligned), then a PLMI-U sticker for the green stripe, and finally turn an ELDRSQD-I sticker so that it’s swimming to the left and place the body off the locker so the tentacles form the red chevron of the flag. It might take some adjustment to get right, and it’s not the clearest representation, but I’m still pretty proud of myself for coming up with it and I want to share so that others can show solidarity in the same way.

      Not to excuse the racism or other such bigotries in the Splatoon or other competitive Nintendo communities, it's right to call it out and we should, but am I the only one feeling like Nintendo communities are being scapegoated a little here? Nintendo games tend to foster a better reputation of inclusivity and diversity due to things like lack of voicechat, whereas a lot of other games these problems often also exist and is more extreme and commonplace, and doesn't get called out. I think gaming communities period tend to have a lot of problems and it'd be really convenient for other communities to paint Nintendo as the "weirdo" group, and wash their hands of looking at and cleaning up their own communities.

    For example... From once silly and truly harmless jokes to now physically, verbally and mentally damaging jokes about your [forgot word for place where you come from, your roots, your skin color] and when you voice your disdain for them, all you get is "IT'S JUST A PRANK BRO, DON'T BE A SNOWFLAKE!!" for getting harrassed. That is truly toxic of its own...
    How are they mistreating black people who already dealt with slavery in the past?? Can't they just treat us normally?? That's all we ask. I'm truly disgusted that they refer to us as primates, nag about not having the right to say the n-word, which is a PETTY complaint if you compare it to what rights POC are denied.
    And don't get me STARTED on people making fun of what they see as negative black stereotypes.
    How are they mistreating Asians while THEY MADE THE GAME??
    How can they make fun of the tragic Palestine situation?!
    This community deserves to have diverse people feel welcomed and embraced for who they are.

    I don't know how to talk about this without it being from a personal perspective. I have always been largely isolated, unable to deal with the noise of many people, and do not participate in social media or large online servers. I am white and live in an area where probably less than 1% of the population is black. I have, in the past, tried to tell friends of friends that I'm not comfortable with them using racist language, been treated as a killjoy and oddball for saying it, and left those spaces/dropped contact with those people. I speak out against causally racist speech not because I have black friends I'm thinking of (I have only a tiny number of people I would call friends, and none happen to be black), or any specific role model; I do it because it is necessary to never treat this as normal, or it becomes normal.
    Racist phrasing as seen in some of these examples is not generally spoken with the intent of harm; it is usually spoken because it has been internalized as a normal way to speak, and it causes harm as an effect. This means that the defense of "I did not mean to cause someone harm" can be both completely true and utterly worthless to justify it. The only way to stop it is to speak out against it and force people to eliminate their own habits. This also has the effect of calling out behavior that makes someone from a specific race an "other" rather than "a person like me", a mindset that reinforces itself the more such speech is used.
    I can only hope that those people who have been speaking like this will take the chance to self-reflect and improve themselves. There really isn't a sufficient way to apologize and undo the immediate damage done towards making community members of all races feel welcome, so only change for the future can make things better. Watching KenKnows' video and seeing how much it bothers him that this goes unaddressed, as he clearly tries to hold back his personal frustration for the sake of maintaining professionalism, should immediately shake people up.

    I think a good form of proper repentance would be for them to do charity streams for non-profits fighting against marginalization and oppression of PoC.
    I’ve been thinking about Leafi’s apology rationale of “I was 13 back then.” Obviously not an excuse, but that feels just as much a failing on Leafi’s parents. That a 13 year old would not understand the implications of saying that, or worse understanding and doing it anyways, speaks to a major gap in how their parents raised them with regards to understanding the history of race in America. This sends a message to us older players with kids of our own, don’t just assume your kid is a “good one” and will know not to say things like this intrinsically. You have to have conversations with them, no matter how uncomfortable.

    While this might've been my *intent*, i instead encountered rational leftists who carefully(and respectfully) dismantled every one of my arguments, and brought me to question the very foundation of the beliefs i was raised on. I *carefully*(and respectfully)brought this to family members, and got a variety of reactions; but now most of us are no longer mormon, me and most of my siblings are left-wing(especially after realizing we're LGBT), and my mom even helped her friend out of an abusive relationship she was being pushed into by her spouse and church group.
    Eventually, i *did* encounter the "rabid leftists" i was warned about; but by that time, i'd seen enough to know they didn't make up the majority, and that there was a *lot* the right wasn't telling me. I don't think this would've happened if i'd encountered the angry irrational type first though.

    I saw this video when I checked my RUclips subs in between turf war matches with a player named Jackpot😮
    (Turns out you are talking about a team, but the title sure got my attention)

    It makes me so mad that people act like this. I don't understand how other people don't understand how to be kind to people who are different. It's not that hard to not say hurtful things. I don't think it's difficult to accept people's differences or to apologize if you hurt or offend someone.
    "But as I observed your evolution, I was DISGUSTED. You wage war over minor genetic deviations." -Tartar
    And right now, I AM disgusted with the way people are. Do people really think that appearances make a difference? It feels like I'm back in kindergarten, when kids were separating into groups, dividing people because they thought a hair color or eye color or gender was superior. No one's superior to anyone, and the only people who are inferiors are people who can't understand that appearances shouldn't matter.

    not the fucking nijisanji black thumbnail! in all seriousness when I first heard about this information from kenknows/negus's recount of the situation. my mouth was fucking AGHAST it was locked wide open in shock. I don't even care about jackpot and lowkey forgot about them, but that did not change how much this situation left me in shock. and for the remaining player/ team leader who had to hear about all this, and disband the team? I salute to you for being the bigger person

    One can deduce that you are a teacher, you spoke about all this greatly. Major kudos to you for using your platform to talk about this. I hope we come out a stronger and safer community out of this. Be radical and listen to black and asian people my friends!

    Even as a PoC, I still don't really feel comfortable giving my opinion on what consequences Jackpot should face, and obviously I am of the opinion that what they said is unacceptable. One thing I will say though is that, truthfully, to understand the true severity of the situation and to be able to construct any kind of informed opinion one really needs to just see the evidence for themselves. Just searching up "Splatoon Jackpot Situation" will get you some links that can lead to both the twitter thread and an imgur link to the exact words used by Jackpot, but be warned that it is pretty intense. Way, way worse than I thought it'd be at the very least.

    And now Nintendo will support even less the competitive community when we just got some recognition

      That's probably true but it's the least of our concern right now. We should probably focus on fixing our toxic community.

    I’ve had similar thinking to gem in this video. And part of that is because I have developed as a side effect of how I was raised to have that ‘bartender’ mindset and it naturally makes me try to dig deeper into someone’s mentality. And even if I would hate someone like jackpot or the angriest splatoon player. I would NEVER feel complete hate for that person regardless of their past. (Unless if they are threatening someone’s lifestyle)

    I have been playing splatoon for about 2 or 4 years now Splatoon 2 was my introduction to the franchise where I met my friends and ya know Squid School I don’t have Twitter I stay away from social media sites like that only discord and RUclips I have and I recently watched Kenknows because I wanted to know out what was going on. I’m a POC and I was speechless from the comments and videos I saw of Jackpot I honestly don’t know what to say the Splatoon community is so welcoming and I only had like one bad experience in it but I didn’t think a well known team would do this I just hope they grew and rethink their actions. Call me gullible because I’m a forgiving person tho I am curious on what the other POC splatoon players think of this situation.

    I agree, and don't really have anything of matter to say that wasn't said already.
    Something that i do wanna say but is about me and thus irrelevant to the situation;
    I am more sensitive with some of these topics, and i struggle with these issues being talked everywhere. Yes, they must be talked about, but all my "safe space"s are filled to the brim with discussion about these topics, and i have nowhere to retreat to when topics get uncomfortable.
