No retention intros, no annoying cheap standard music, just straight to the point from the beginning to the end. Well done, professionally! Thanks a lot.
Learned so much from this video! I was very hesitant about filters and how to manually adjust settings but you explain everything so well in this video!
Think of a mist filter as a night or lowlight filter. I used one on my big Sony for Christmas lights to bloom. They look great for city streetlights. The NDs are for daylight - choose based upon the clouds present that day. The polarizer will make the blue sky and water/sea/lake pop. If you plan the shooting situation, they can make a decent photo or video really great.
So I have ordered the Freewell ND-PL set of four filters, 8,16,32,64 if it is a super clear day is it the 8 or 64 I want to use? And what would I use for a cloudy day? Thanks!
Thank you for your review and comments. I have been a casual user and not so particular on a cinematic move look but care more about start shoot quick, and quick to store away after shooting. Your review and comments help me decide well. I really appreciate your review comments. Thank you.
Another great HONEST review from you Todd. I hate when youtubers talk about only the positive parts of the freebies they received. And most of them also try to sell you their affiliate link. You are always honets. If and If only you really need nd filters you should consider these but if anyone is that much concerned about motion blur and shutter speed..They shouldn't buy that mini gimbal at all. The main point here is to use it hassle free.. For YT work no one really needs nd filters.(see Markus Pix, Casey Neitstat etc.) For pro work you must buy pro cameras.. That's it :)
When you turn off the OP3 with 1 filter on (Freewell brand); does not allow to close to original off position. Some people may not be bothered by this i’m certain. Other brands are thinner and allow to get back to off position with 1 filter on.
This video comes just in time as I am currently considering having a filter. Will probably settle for one and that would be Mist Filter for low light shoot and over bright sunny days.
What a great video! It makes me want to grab a Pocket 3 and filter pack but I literally have no use for it lol. You did amazing job reviewing the product. I've been really enjoying your videos ever since I've stumbled across your channel.
Great video! From what I've seen so far in my opinion on the mist filters is that the Freewell Snow Mist seems to look better at night than the DJI Black Mist, and vice versa in day light. Good price for such a large set. You're right that it may be overkill for most, but for those who have a little extra cash to throw around, it's probably a good investment because of the whole "better to have and not need than not have if you ever need" theory.
Yep. The price is certainly reasonable for what you get. I'd be interested in trying DJI's black mist filter to see how it compares to Freewell's Snow Mist.
What audio gear are you using on this review? As an audio professional - your VO sounds amazing! Excellent review by the way. And thanks for the audio crossfades on the cuts! +1 subscriber. 🤟
Thanks for the information! Think If I were to grab an osmo 3 I’ll want the ND filters just so I can control the motion blur and also cut out reflections when needed
Great video! I frequently use ND filters with my full-frame camera. However, I've encountered issues where even the smallest dust particle on the filter can ruin a shot, despite thorough cleaning. These particles are hard to detect during installation, especially in fast-paced, 'run and gun' situations where there's little time for meticulous cleaning. My solution is to aim the camera at the sky or another solid-colored surface and inspect the viewfinder closely. The viewfinder is crucial because it provides a more accurate preview than the camera's screen, allowing me to detect any dust particles on the filter or lens. However, with cameras like the Pocket 3 that lack a viewfinder, I might have to reconsider using ND filters as frequently, particularly if dust becomes a persistent problem.
True. Smears and grit can be a real pain with small cameras like the Pocket 3, and action cameras well. I once shot a video on my GoPro that looked like I was using an anamorphic filter because the light streaks were so insane.
Thanks mate. great job. I go home to film ceremony fro my people in december. I am an australian aboriginal. We are in the n=middle of the desert. Any suggestions on filters for my pocket 3? or should I just capture raw footage and do it in post...and yes I am a total beginner. I just want to capture our stories and songs before they die out.
Great evaluation on filter use. Great advice on why not to use filters. The fact you got to remove the filter before turning the camera off is a deal breaker for me given the casual use I plan for this camera.
Thanks. I do hope that DJI changes the design of the Pocket 4 or whatever to accommodate at least one filter, for I'd like to keep a UV filter on it at all times.
@@bananaketchup02 Yes! I discovered by accident the freewell CPL filter I bought was thin enough to not bump when turning off the camera. So easy to forget you got a filter attached.
What if, on sunny days or other bright circumstances, you put on an ND filter and leave shutter speed on auto. Would this be useful to get better video quality, but without the hassle of having to check your EV all the time? Very useful video, by the way!

If I had to pick two, I'd say ND8 and ND32 (or ND64) would be the most useful. ND8 is 3 stops, which would be good for overcast days. ND32 and ND64 are 5 and 6 stops respectively, and will block more light when the sun is bright without clouds. Then you can raise/lower ISO (or set it to a range, as shown in the video) and let the camera set an appropriate ISO. Those two NDs should do it.
@todd Thank you for sharing. Why are you using 24 fps instead of 50/60. I always use 50 fps 1/100Sh and that makes the image much smoother. Hope to hear from you why.
24fps is what our eyes can see and it looks natural, also this is the frame rate all movies use it. 60fps is used only if you want to do slow motion. You can shoot with any frame you want, but there is a rule in a cinematography that sets 24 frames for cinema (movies) and 30 frames for television (journalism, tv shows and etc)… not a rule but an standards.

Thank you for a great and honest review. You are only one reviewer that mention pocket3 can not close with filter on. I have both freewell and startrc filter. Startrc is really thin so you can leave it on after turn off camera.
Hi Todd. I'm looking for what is the best set of ND filters for the Pocket 3. Freewell seems to be the leading candidate from what I've seen, but I've also heard of some variable option like that of K&F, I think its called. Just wondering what your thoughts were on them? Thanks
Did you ever decide on the Variable ND filters? I'm considering them as well. Additionally, I've read that the K&F filters fit on the lens and you don't have to take them off when the camera shuts off there's enough clearance.
I have not decided just yet. That info on the k&f is interesting! Still trying to decide how often I would actually use them. But I am interested in checking out the can if now that you mention it
@@sheltonherbert4138 I just ordered them as I have an upcoming trip starting this weekend. I did some test shooting outside with the device this morning and it was pretty bright out and with manual exposure settings on (ISO 50, 1/50, 4K/24p) the image was nearly blown out. If my understanding is correct, the (V)ND should help me correct for that, allowing me to keep my desired shutter speed but have a properly metered scene. It should be here today so I’ll report back with my experience. Some folks have mentioned image quality concerns but I’m not pixel peeping nor do I think people who will be viewing my content (social media, YT shorts, etc) will be able to tell the difference on smaller screens.

Very helpful video…. The pocket 3 is definitely DJI’s FLAGSHIP camera…the sales tell the truth and I hope they put even MORE resources toward the next model. This device is being used at weddings, events…etc. it’s a Professional, Non-Professional camera that does light to Heavy filming work. Let’s just be honest.
I always use a variable ND filter on my Sony A7siii...so I know why / how to use them. However surely there's a case for setting this little pocket cam to auto exposure, then attaching say a 32 ND filter to it for shooting in full sun. The camera will then have assistance in reducing light, so will not need to crank the shutter speed hight...NO??? or am I not getting something here??
ND8 (3 stops) is typically the most used for me as well (when shooting video in general). But sometimes heavier densities are needed on bright, sunny days.
I was going to mention variable NDs, but didn't include them in the video. My quick take is that variable NDs - while convenient - can misbehave like a CPL or ND/PL filter does when used outdoors in bright light. Also, I find them quite fiddly, especially on a small gimbal. Granted, it takes a little more time to mount/un-mount solid NDs and ND/PLs compared to rotating a dial (like a VND), but because they're magnetized the difference is fairly negligible.
I usually don't use ND filters except for fast moving subjects where motion blur is really necessary, because as we can see at 8:00 minutes: it casts a dark shadow on colors which I don't really like
Great video but this just seems like way too much work for this. On my bigger cinema cameras I get it but while on vacation or traveling I don’t wands fiddle with filters
I think you're saying motion blur is less important than story? If so, I'd agree. Motion blur is sweetening of the image and can't make a story more compelling. For me it's more about making things less noticeable, and because all of us are accustomed to watching television and films at 24fps and 1/50 second, matching that means the footage is less distracting.
I stopped using ND filter in my drones a long time ago, makes almost no difference on footage and really slow you down. I will also not using it in my pocket 3 I’ll leave the ND filters only for my main camera. Drone and gimbals (pocket 3) are gadgets to to give a plus into your videos, if you make them more difficult to use, you will be more lazy to use it and you will use it less. If you making a video for a client that doesn’t know anything about cinematography he will never notice the difference about montion blur, this is for our ego e preference.
Depending on where you’re shooting, it’s not just about motion blur but also getting the shot exposed properly. I took the pocket 3 to Jamaica when it was first released and I wish I had nd filters. The highlights like the clouds were blown out. I shot in log and was able to do some grading but then you are pushing the colors in your footage unnecessarily where having an nd filter could easily address this problem. I will say that the auto setting are great but you can really get some amazing footage when properly exposed and shooting in log.
@@IndiaDelgado about the expose I can easily fix reducing the expose to -0.3 to -1.0. But I agree with you about ND filters for expose properly, but for me the difference is not so significant for the extra work to get the footage. Maybe I’m thinking like this because I’m a lazy videomaker haha.
1/4 is a little strong in this case. Will be good if the storytelling is a scene about a dream or memory otherwise it has limited applications. 1/8 will be a better choice like what is said in the video.
The main difference is shutter speed. NDs help make the footage a little smoother and less jittery. Better blur with subjects in motion. Otherwise...? That's their main contribution with the P3 because the aperture is fixed.
*@**10:46** Uhhh no. The mist effect filter doesn't look good because you're shooting into the Sun just outside of the upper Left top of your frame. Don't do that ! For one thing, this kind of shot is incredibly cliche ! For another reason, this effect filter is designed for indoor incandescently lit, studio shots, or outdoor with the Sun behind you over your shoulder to the Left or Right. Never use any effects filter with the main point of light only in front of you. I'm sorry to say this, but I feel compelled to say it - I am so sick of this goddam influencer movement ! This is one messed up trend which really needs to just go away ! Why ? There's too many people giving out either incorrect or deliberately obfuscating information, or the influencer is just a rank amateur, who simply doesn't know what they are talking about, or hasn't received enough basic videography or photography training to properly evaluate the product in question. I wish the companies who approach various people with channels on RUclips practised some kind of proviso that in order to review their products the influencer had to demonstrate some level of proof of photography knowledge, or training, or qualifications first.*
True if you don't really care about smoother shutter speeds and increasing clarity. If the Pocket 3 had a variable aperture it would be an entirely different ball game.
It’s meant for professionals that want to use pocket 3 as a hobby but still film d log to customize how footage look post. Not for newbies that use it for vlogging

Were you ever watching a video, sucked into the story, then dropped out of the story, annoyed that you did not see some camera blur?
I think you're saying motion blur is less important than story? If so, I'd agree. Motion blur is sweetening of the image and can't make a story more compelling. For me it's more about making things less noticeable, and because all of us are accustomed to watching television and films at 24fps and 1/50 second, matching that means the footage is less distracting.
are you related to that coffee guy?
I stopped using ND filter in my drones a long time ago, makes almost no difference on footage and really slow you down. I will also not using it in my pocket 3 I’ll leave the ND filters only for my main camera. Drone and gimbals (pocket 3) are gadgets to to give a plus into your videos, if you make them more difficult to use, you will be more lazy to use it and you will use it less. If you making a video for a client that doesn’t know anything about cinematography he will never notice the difference about montion blur, this is for our ego e preference.
By the way… excellent video

@@rafael.gazoni lol! Haha. Sometimes working smarter not harder is better trust me! im lazy too! The most important thing is getting the shot! ☺️☺️☺️
I don’t like mist filters and I don’t get the hype about it. Like who wants a video looking like the lens needs cleaned 😂
he's using one in this video
1/4 is a little strong in this case. Will be good if the storytelling is a scene about a dream or memory otherwise it has limited applications. 1/8 will be a better choice like what is said in the video.
Excellent video! Really appreciate your hard work explaining things.
I don't see any difference between having and not having a filter.
The main difference is shutter speed. NDs help make the footage a little smoother and less jittery. Better blur with subjects in motion. Otherwise...? That's their main contribution with the P3 because the aperture is fixed.
What kind of question is that. Device is unusable outside if you don't have them.
You don’t really need filters they don’t do very much really
True if you don't really care about smoother shutter speeds and increasing clarity. If the Pocket 3 had a variable aperture it would be an entirely different ball game.
Freewell is overpriced
chill you are taking the pocket 3 too thing too serious. your reality is not ours
It’s meant for professionals that want to use pocket 3 as a hobby but still film d log to customize how footage look post. Not for newbies that use it for vlogging
No. No you do not need these filters. Shoot in log & clean it up in post
That would not do anything for motion blur.
