Hey man, thank you for posting this. I am the guy that NBC featured in the pre-race. I am the guy who brought Matt Dahl to the Kansas Speedway after 9.11. Obviously this was a special weekend for a lot of people. But I have never watched the entire race before. I had forgotten what a crazy race this was. So many different stories from this race. I still go to the Kansas races two times a year, but the fall race in Kansas is always so special to me. I will never forget the first NASCAR race at Kansas. Thank you for posting the entire race, it brought back a lot of memories.

Watching these old NASCAR races really makes me wish for the "good old days".
The transition to the cookie cutter tracks like Kansas, Chicago etc. was the beginning of the end. Tracks like Rockingham, N. Wilksboro, Nazareth, Riverside, even Ontario should have been made priorities, they should have been included on the race schedule. NASCAR fans are, or at least were, extremely loyal and these changes didn't go over well.
NASCAR got greedy. D.W called it at the last Rockingham race when he predicted that the sport was on a downhill trend. He was 100% spot on. I haven't watched a race since Jeff Gordon retired, and would not have watched then if he were not still in a car.
Were there issues with these old tracks? Yup, that is what made them great. Fans loved the peculiarities, the oddities that these tracks presented. NASCAR apparently didn't and tried to turn all tracks into carbon copies of each other.
Look at how it all turned out.

When the commentators were talking about the new racetracks at about 2:23:30, they were so right. Chicagoland, Kansas, and Las Vegas are some of the most boring races on the circuit. They should have built more short tracks, or something like Dover or Rockingham. Too bad that money talks and what the fans want walks.

      I totally agree!
Those new 1,5-mil tri- and quad-ovals are so boring. The superspeedways are great, but no more can be built (at reasonable costs). Shorttrack-racing is much better, I wish NASCAR used more of them. More roadcourse-races would be great to watch too!

Honestly, Kansas is one of the best 1.5's on the circuit right now. Multiple grooves all over the track. That new pavement they put down in 2012 has really aged well.
I go to Kansas every year and I think I left disappointed only 2 times, both before the repave.

***** In the 2001 EA Sports 500, & it was Bobby Hamilton & Bobby LaBonte making contact that started that wreck. Benson was collected by Ricky Craven, who was hit by LaBonte after the initial contact.
Anyway, it may sound stupid, by after I initially thought he was badly injured after that wreck (Because I had just turned 11, so I was young enough to fear that, especially after Earnhardt & Blaise Alexander & I was relieved he was injured at all), I found a Benson item a few days later at a Walmart while shopping with my Mom. A card came with it & I stared into his eyes & I felt... something... Some kind of emotion from within. To this day I have no clue what it was & I still have that item today. So I started to notice him more & more each week until his racing convinced me to become a fan of his (Because before that the only guys I liked in all of motorsports were guys sponsored by McDonald's).
Eventually Johnny's racing skill, kindness, & honor drove me to be a major fan of his, even more than Bill & Andy ever did, & later on became my top favorite.
      I hope I answered your question. :)

I know Dale was not much of a road racer but COTA in Austin, Texas where F1 holds the U.S. grand prix, I think he'll love racing on since I heard somewhere he enjoys watching F1 racing in the early mornings before he races in the NASCAR race himself. ForRoad America and the Charlotte Roval I believe he'll make a big deal out of them going against them. The Indianapolis road course I believe he'll be okay with after all, F1 held the U.S. Grand Prix there before COTA was built, anyway for Kansas I think he'll enjoy as well, and Chicagoland I believe would be the same thing. Kentucky and Gateway should be familiar territory because those tracks were used for (then) Busch series back when he owned a Busch car for Dale Jr. I think Iowa if it gets a NASCAR date again, Dale would've liked it because with Iowa the old school drivers and fans when they see it are reminded of Bristol as a high speed short track

@@zanemarte9877 I see the statement that you made and it took awhile for me to figure out what to say and how to put it into words but here it goes...
I hate to say it but I was a one year old diaper when Dale died and also 9/11 as well... and when I was introduced to the sport by my uncle who is an Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. fan hearing his stories being a fan and it made me become an Earnhardt fan and he and I don’t like the new rules NASCAR is doing today when I think of Dale I just simply asked what could’ve been if he was alive seeing the sport today... I agree with the Charlotte Roval and if Dale was alive I’m sure that he would make a big deal out of it and honestly I feel the same way going against it because it’s just weird and NASCAR has never done that in its history before and I think that the playoffs, stages, regular season champion I’m sure Dale would get ticked off at NASCARs selfish acts and I too would agree with that one as well...
I also think that he would’ve made DEI a real McCoy powerhouse team for the ages! I’m not a big believer in alternate timelines here and there but I’m sure that Dale raced Chicagoland and Kansas. But Nashville Superspeedway? I noticed Thomas above your reply said he would’ve liked it...
I always thought if we could have a tv mini series like the mini series “For All Mankind” but based out of all the drivers we lost would be alive today either their lives were not fatally tragic but the tragedies didn’t occur someone told me that they like the idea but what if Davey Allison’s and Alan Kulwickis aviation accidents happened but escaped the crashes but I thought that’s a little too much... because surviving a aviation accident doesn’t come through... but I don’t know what the NASCAR What If scenario mini series title should be... I also saw this NR2003 What if Dale Earnhardt is still alive theory videos. The only thing that he got right was Kevin Harvick being in the 30 AOL car but as I progressed watching the series I had confusing thoughts that didn’t seem to fit... like a guardrail around Bristols pit roads that’s definitely weird...
But I doubt that a What If NASCAR mini series would never get off the ground and never make a great success either in live action or animated...

@@Mister_Matt_X There's always a what if scenario, and all this is what I believe what would have been.
Also if you remember the original plans for 2001 were to have Kevin Harvick drive the RCR 30 car (which was RCR's expansion to three Cup cars) for some of the races (including the ones Jeff Green competed in obviously because of the circumstances), and then go full time starting in the 2002 Daytona 500, which would have Kevin Harvick become part of the 2002 Rookie Class with Jimmie Johnson and Ryan Newman instead of a late entry into race 2 of the 2001 season.

Besides Kevin Harvick because I’m trying to see what would the sport look like going into 2001 and into today without Dales death and how he could’ve experienced racing a 36 race weekend schedule...
I’m still wondering if Dale hadn’t pass Kurt or Casey Atwood would’ve been 2001 Rookie of the Year and like you said Kevin would’ve competed for Rookie of the Year in 2002 with Jimmie Johnson and Ryan Newman...
