I'm so glad you mention not repeatedly dropping from height while training. Most people miss that. In most cases, more training = better, but there's only so much our bodies can take, even with proper technique. Thanks for addressing the fact that this is a technique meant to save you, not to be used over and over again. Great tutorial.
Pro tip: If you are for the first time droping from high places, keep in mind that land comes faster than you expect it to and you WILL slam on it harder than expected, so PRACTICE!
@@arenshichic1203 Well heights that you are already familiar with are always a good start. Go explore your city or hometown and find public walls or maybe just benches, whatever you are comfortable with. The only thing is to get the technique right! I have been training parkour for 7 years now so you can say that i have some experience with it. If u plan to drop from a roof someday, practice rolls and drops separately. Once you get good at them, combine them! It's a different feel because u don't rely anymore on your leg muscles to take the impact, but on your back and on timing.
Ronnie I absolutely love you, you've inspired me to do parkour and I can nearly land a backflip on flat ground! Thank you so much for making all these incredible videos, keep it up!
I just took a still image of each shot and cropped each one so they all fit together. Then just started the playback of each clip where I took the still image.
Now, I certainly know how to land. Though last Tuesday, my friends and I were doing a video for a P.E. project. I did a jump from about 5-6 meters in the air (from a balcony to soft grass, and no hard surface), no problem. However, we did it later in a running scene, and suddenly it was dangerous as all hell! First scene had grass, the second had pure, solid asphalt (that was run along some grass). We ran in sequence, right order. I turned out to be the faster one of my friends, and I had to slow down at near end of the edge - And we all jump - Instead of landing safely, I lost balance in the air (due to having the wrong/unsuspected speed) and I mislanded my roll. I landed on my head, flipped and slid through the asphalt so my right elbow got a burn/huge-scratch-mark. I didn't move for a few seconds, as you can probably imagine; it hurt.. (Second jump was about 2 m above our landing) Luckily, I had no serious injury. But damn, I was near knocked unconcious when I landed.
Roll on your shoulder blade to your hip not your shoulder to your back. That's what makes it hurt. You'll bruise your shoulder and maybe even break it if you fall from high enough on hard ground.
I hurt my feet when I land because I didn't know about the roll I was jumping a fence at school (obviously because there was no point of staying that day as I was approaching it I wasnt scared I was like ahh this is nothing but when I got up there I got scared because I was so high up but that was because of my body height to my POV It was so high up but actually it was a easy jump but I got scared and left it and chose a different escape route
Mpeke just keep trying it took nearly 2 weeks to not feel pain when I first starting doing rolls after a year I can do a roll whenever I want even in high jumps. after some time you will feel more comfortable with your roll. you also can film yourself and see what you need to change in order to do it right
Mpeke It's taken me a year or 2 just to get it comfortable and I'm gradually moving onto harder surfaces. Your problem is the tuck, you hit the hip bone because your knees aren't close enough to your chest. This was the biggest problem for me too don't worry. When you do it right you'll feel it you hit the meaty part of the back of your shoulder, roll across diagonal and exit you'll feel on your butt cheek/thigh not your hip.
Mpeke I had the same problem in the beginning. Either you should look for a soft spot to roll towards, or do it more the way you are doing it so it strenghtens you bone. At least that's what I did
andrei260902 Strenghtening your bone is a bad idea you'll end up with problems later it's how tight you tuck and if you still hit it adjust the angle so you enter and come out more sideways or where you're comfortable
Don't keep rolling over the bone. It will just cause irritation and damage over time. Instead, adjust your roll so you're either rolling more to the side, or more straight forward. There's a path across your back of soft tissue, and if you learn to roll perfectly over it there won't be that pain. Just experiment and look up some tutorials about hitting your hip bone :) I remember the Tapp brothers did a video on that.
If you are going to practice this, think of how your cat or leopard actually jumps or lands. Their legs are just like springs. Or another way to memorize this technique is how your posture and forefoot coordinates in transitioning to ukemi. I do not have a good experience in being a parkour person myself. But I do have a good experience in athleticism and OCR for hobby. Plus I have a good experience kickboxing karate and okay experience in aiki jujitsu.
Hey Ronnie, the first shot you used of you jumping off that really high roof and then past the trees on the left looked pretty insane. How high was that and when did u do that?
Good tips Ronnie and this is one of the biggest problems with people getting started they make too big a jump or take huge drops and miss the point of preserving their bodies and training parkour safely.
I learned this roll in mma a long time ago and I did it wrong one time and shattered the bone going through my should and now one of my arms are longer than the other. Time to go learn this over again:)

There is a point where it would be smart to just stick the landing and not roll, and a point where a roll is necessary. I dropped at least 3 meters straight down onto concrete, tried rolling, and broke my collarbone along with a posterior subluxation of the shoulder.
