Looking at Google Street View, you can see it was a "Park Plaza Hotel" in 2008. The next image is 2011 and it's a Red Lion until 2018 when it becomes the "Executive". No attempt to either repurpose or remove the round, illuminated sign on the tower. I can do more research if desired on the history. It looks like it goes back to the 1980s.
I remember this place as a kid in the 80s and it was something like Airpark Plaza Motor Hotel back then with signs proclaiming "formerly Howard Johnson". I actually think it goes back to the 50s though. I was thinking of doing some digging myself if I get a chance...
I would accept this place just because I have a place to sleep, sit down, and take a shower for one night. All other concerns are passable for something this cheap. However, you are correct. They could replace the fan, the light bulbs on the lamp, and vacuum the carpet at least.
This hotel used to have a glass elevator. As you enter from Helgenberger / Airport Parkway (I think) to the left of the door, you'll see a solid protruding structure. That is the added enclosure of what was once a glass elevator. I had ridden it as a kid. It was converted to a solid elevator before I moved out of Oakland and California.
I think that carpet was getting dirtier the longer you held the phone there. Also when you turned the tub on I had such high hopes for that showerhead. I was also surprised at the cleanliness of the beds.
This place was formerly a Red Lion hotel. If there's one thing I've learned over the years from traveling it's avoid ANYTHING Ramada or Red Lion before, during & after.
Excellent video Jacob! Tbh, this wasn’t as bad as I was expecting, and at least it was mostly clean! For what you paid, this seems like a steal, especially for the area!😸
These types of hotels can be kinds entertaining, it’s always interesting to see what else is wrong with the place. I stayed in a handful of dumpy hotels over the years and always make fun of the things wrong with it, so many things jury rigged and half ass repairs.
I don’t know how you always manage to find all the gross hotels. Unless, it’s way more money, you’re likely just better off going to the places with the good reputation.
Ooooooooookay. Where to begin. Some good, some bad & some ugly. GOOD: The bed. Very clean & the fact they used 2 mattress toppers (the fact they used the wrong size will be overlooked by me). Microwave & fridge are clean & fully defrosted. BAD: Showerhead. Like the looks, but that thing needs to be replaced. The outlet near the desk. Electrician needs to do the work (no wonder the lamp wasn't working). Closet. Great, if you like to steam your clothes that aren't dry clean only. Makes me wonder what the architects were thinking when designing this place. UGLY: Latch lock. Yes, thankfully, you have a good, working deadbolt, but that latch lock is totally unacceptable! Wall near the tub. Makes me think "Is that possibly mold?" Good thing you didn't touch that. OVERALL: Personally, I would've asked for a different room. Yes, good bed, the outlet I can work around, but inadequate security is a hard pass for me.
@Chalmers Gotta tell you, if it weren't for guys like Jacob, Dieselducy (and yes, even myself) doing these reviews, there would be thousands of people wasting money (and some, their health) on fleabag motels. But, we also want to uncover hidden gems that no one may of heard before.
Also I think I bought that mattress protector at the Target nearby on Broadway and 27th in Oakland and put it on top of that other mattress protector. I routinely do this. Then when I go back to the hotel I asked for that specific room so I can have the room that actually has a decent mattress protector. I have also purchase sheets towels and shower heads for rooms. Ok, I don't really purchase them I just steal them. But at least every customer after me has that nice mattress protector in that room. & If it wasn't for me there wouldn't be anything nice like that. & I'd pay for it if I could afford it. & It's impossible to make a room like that livable without stealing stuff like that from Target. & The hotel should be paying for the stuff not me. & Red Lion hotels CEO's daughter is going to marry the CFO of Target so, let Target and red lion hotels absorb the cost. It's their fault to begin with
My question is where else would they put that table?🤔 If it was between the beds you'd be upset about that in front of the TV pretty sure you'd be upset the room is only so big.
@@ginas.6656 Oh I know, not sure why we stayed there. I would've been better off staying in Emeryville that night. I think my family wanted to stay at this hotel because it was near the airport (likely the safest part of Oakland) and we had like a 5 AM flight.
Sketchy & Oakland are synonymous with one another.
So true lol
This hotel is too nice to be in California
@@Newberntrains uh
@@Newberntrains no the best hotels are in Kentucky and Alabama
Yeah yeah yeah, too bad I was not born in North Korea! Why'd Oakland have to be my hometown?

My favorite observation: "This is liveable," in reference to the bedding! Best hotel critic on RUclips, big thanks!

Great job on the reviews! Keep it up!

As soon as I saw the hallway I knew it wasn't going to be good!

is there a trip report coming soon?

Have you ever encountered bed bugs during any of your hotel stays or found any rooms with prior evidence?
Lol reminds me of the days inn in Laredo looks dumpy but is good enough for a bed it sure ain’t a resort
Have you been on any smart elevators?
Built as the Royal Inn Hotel. Was swanky back in the day.
Hotel itself telling you Welcome to Oakland.

that layout is very strange.
Dont drill into the fridge. probably someone placed that sticker there cause i dont think a mini fridge would have stickers like that
Cool 😀
Lol “there doesn’t appear to be a setting to make that not suck”
If I could replace that Broan fan, I'd put in a Panasonic Whisperlite and wire it separately.
The broan I installed is way overpowered for my small bathroom lol sounds like a jet taking off
They should’ve kept the buildings close to each other
This room needs a bit more love and more lighting in the main room
Good video, but yucky hotel!
It looks like a old studio apartment
this hotel could use a renovation!
Is that Oakland CA?
Yes it is, I've stayed in that hotel before and it's worse now then it was when I stayed there about 15 years ago.

10:00 its concerning when the microwave is cleaner than the room its located in.

This hotel is pretty bad but It’s not the worst I have seen either.
