Hope you enjoy this look at my holiday sketches, let me know which is your favourite spread. Would be interested to hear. PS. do you sketch on holiday too?
I’ve only just started sketching on holiday last couple of years, but I love it so much. Looking back on the sketches is a beautiful way to remember the experience. So different to looking at photos. Will be doing more art journaling in general 🖌️🖍️✂️📒✒️✏️🎨 thanks for the inspiration 👍🙏😁
Absolutely beautiful sketches! Who needs a camera when you can draw and paint like this? What a lovely story you told us about your holiday. Thank you once again, dear Mel xx
Hello Melanie. I do sketch, but never consistently like this. I may get one or two sketches done even on a long holiday and I think there is a sense of taking up time and being a bore. I love the idea of having that conversation with my husband beforehand. It would clarify both of our intentions and expectations, and I know he would be supportive. I stop myself really... I don't prefer one spread over another as they are all wonderful. But the "overworked" ones are my favourites because I love the detail and exuberant colours in those! Haha, to each their own!!💗
Your work is such a wonderful reminder why sketching en plein air is so great! Your photos and videos are beautiful but they don’t have the vibrancy of your sketchbook work and I imagine that if you only painted from your photos, your spreads wouldn’t have the same life in them. Thank you for sharing!
Wonderful to see and share your holiday views and sketches. Samuel John Birch is a wonderful artist to be introduced to along the way too! He would be proud of your sketches too! I think you will definitely have to return to some of these views and the sketches, colours and water are beautiful.
You are blessed with a beautiful voice as well as artistic talents! Such a lovely vibe 🥰thank you for sharing your artwork, and life experience with us, it’s so inspiring!
Mel, you're sketches have a strong sense of place and your deep feeling for this beautiful and haunting landscape. Very well done. South Carolina is not Cornwall, but you inspire me to find what speaks to me here and to render it!
I do sketch on holiday. Your holiday book is such a delight; I could never pick a fav - all things by the sea certainly work for me. So glad you shared your special time with us
I love all the sketches. Your sketches are so vibrant. You really work fast. I know the heat is something else. 😩 I look forward to Autumn. Thanks for the lovely tour of where you live. Enjoyed!!!! You and your husband look so sweet together. ❤
I loved this and that last spread that you felt you overworked I thought was really beautiful. I like all the colors and details! Your sketchbooks are so beautiful and inspiring. The first class you did I enjoyed the variety of mediums you use and the layering you showed us how to do. There is something so enjoyable about this kind of art. I love to come back to this style of work because it feels so playful and quite freeing to be able to layer these 3 mediums together. I hope to talk my husband into letting me sign up for your wildflower course! I should probably go back and finish your first course. I love my work that came from it, so maybe I’ll finish that first! 🌸🌼🌺🪻🌷🌸🌻🌹🌸🌼
LOVE that you highlighted what it’s like to sketch with someone else who doesn’t sketch. I feel the guilt that they might be bored and often use that as an excuse not to pull out my materials even if I have them with me. Having a conversation and setting expectations might alleviate this!
What a wonderful vacation in your own country and a beautiful country it is! Thank you for sharing your sketch book, I loved your illustrations and for sharing your view!
Dear Melanie, I am so impressed by your videos. Your calming voice, your sense for the nature around you… I absolutely enjoyed watching this video. Tomorrow I am going on a hike, and I‘ll take my sketching supplies with me, trying to capture some views during the hike. Greetings from Germany
Hi Mel! Over here in Canada, you have been inspiring me to work in my sketchbook. I love listening to you when I work durring my workday. You have such a calming voice. And since I am here, I loved your colaboration with Sandy Hester! Please think about doing another one! Thanks!
A truly wonderful sketch book. I think my favourite is The Cove as I loved the simple pen and brush work. I also loved the car rally sketches. Such a lovely personal record of your holiday too.
My favourite sketch was the day nine, secret cove. Such a peaceful scene and reminds me of one I did on a holiday in Queensland. Yes, I sketch on holidays, too. Holiday sketch books bring back vivid memories.
Lovely views and sketching. A nice tour of the area. I liked your loose sketchy artwork, with the neocolors on top of the watercolor. Maybe it will help me loosen up in drawing the Oregon coast in the Pacific Northwest of USA. Thank you for sharing.
This was amazing to watch. I have been trying to get more into sketching but always try to get things to be so perfect that it doesn't end up being a sketch. I'm amazing how you can switch between paint and pencil and crayon, you really have to know your supplies to do that and the colours you use are also so interesting and alive. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your videos. Thank you for posting.
Your videos are always a gift Melanie. Such a joy to watch both your travels and how you captured them with your art. Thank you for sharing it all with us. :)
Hello from Sydney Australia....love this video and glad I finally found your channel.....must visit Cornwall if I ever make it back to UK...I only got as far as Dorset last time ....love your work Mel and look forward to more thank you, you've inspired me to get out my sketchbook and to my local ocean which is only 5 mins away in city of Sydney and get into it!🙋♀
Wow they’re all beautiful. My favorite was the horizontal one near the end of your view during a picnic. I love how you used several smaller drawings on the page.
Thanks Sonia! I think we just didn't want the extra hassle of getting wet and sandy. We're also not keen sea swimmers. Happy to sit beside the water and watch.
You have such a picturesque landscapes around you! Beautiful nature always inspires to grab a brush, doesn't it?Thank you for sharing your art and your vision of life :)
Brilliant video! Great to see your Derwent paints looking so well-used! (Mine are too.) Interesting that you replaced the annoyingly badly designed waterbrush that Derwent supply, with 2 that actually fit in the box properly 😜Lovely sketches, glad you got a landscape format sketchbook, my favourite of your beautiful sketches were of Place House 🐦Kenijack Cove and the one with the swallows 🪶
This was such a joy to watch. Made me feel like I was along with you. That is for sharing it and I’m hoping, despite the heat, that it was very restful and rejuvenating for both of you. What a joy to be able to paint while your husband looked around and enjoyed the views. I always take so long to sketch and paint. Will have to practice quicker samples!
Thanks Jessica, lovely to read your comment. It was a joyful experience and just thinking about it makes me want to go out and sketch again! The more you do the quicker you become, particularly under timed exercises!
Love love love your vacation video. Your art is wonderful. You get the scale and proportions just right and I don’t think that’s always easy. I would have faded in that heat, but you persevered and got all your drawings. I wonder how many steps you took on your trip! The British are so good about walking and taking in nature. I’d watch this video again. Thank you for sharing.
I'm not sure which is my favourite, but I loved the video; thank you for sharing! Yes I do sketch on holiday too - last week I was sketching at Godrevy! :)
Yes I keep a sketch book too. I’m getting quicker and like you I now complete some off location. Often my favourites are my quick captures, however I do especially love your sketches that are full of colourful linework. For example Lamorna Cove. I am from Nova Scotia, Canada.
Nice sketchbook tour! What a beautiful location for sketching, it looks amazing! I like your watercolor palette, it looks like it is definitely getting put to good use! :)
Beautiful work, Mel! I love all of your sketches, there's so much more energy and memories bound up in them compared to a smart phone photograph, such a lovely way to remember your holiday X
Cornwall is so very beautiful it’s so lovely to see the different areas. I’ve been to them all but I miss it when I’m not there! What a great visual diary you have, I see it becoming a published book it would be so popular!👏🏻👏🏻💖
I love your videos! I had a number of sketchbooks but was too intimidated and unsure of what to draw in them. My first drawing was your daphodil tutorial and since then I have started using all my sketchbooks and I'm really loving it. Thank you for your help and inspiration.
Hi Mel, I love all the sketches you have made😊. But Lamorna is my favourite. We've done the hike twice and the colours are just beautiful there. I also sketch on the way, but I still learned a lot from you. And, what is a photo compared to a sketch where you intensively looked at and captured the area🥰. I have a question: Is the watercolour palette from Derwent inktense pans for travel, or normal watercolours? The colours are so wonderful. Thank you for the answer and for sharing this video. Have a lovely day😊
Thanks Gabi 😊 Lamorna is so beautiful 😍 The derwent tin can be used for both, although personally think they are very much suited to sketching the landscape.
This is a gr4eat sketchbook tour - really inspiring. Can you tell me what your little watercolour pallet wa? Did you put the colours in yourself or was it bought ready for landscape?
Melanie... such beautiful work you do... so vibrant.... happy... I hope you don't mind my asking regarding your little coloured tins for the pigment sticks.... where you got them from???... they are indeed perfect for them ... I've been trying and trialing different things for mine but not found anything that i am truely content with.... Looking to hearing from you.... Thankyou for sharing your work... gorgeous. Thanks so much, it is lovely to have a book of sketches to look back through and remind me of different events and times.
I see you use watercolor pencils and water to color in some of your sketches. That inspired me. Thanks
I loved the Sepia Graphite painting. Your new sketchbook looks like a winner. Just so lovely and sketchy! Love them! Thx…👍🙏🏻🖌🖍

Your videos are sublime🙏👌👏👍☺️
Love it that you made it clear with your husband what to expect of the hiking tour. He must be as kind as you are.
He is definitely a patient man!
Travel sketching tour is awesome

Thank you for sharing!
So true! I don't think I would capture it in the same way at all. Thanks for watching!
Wonderful to see and share your holiday views and sketches. Samuel John Birch is a wonderful artist to be introduced to along the way too! He would be proud of your sketches too! I think you will definitely have to return to some of these views and the sketches, colours and water are beautiful.

Wonderful sketches Melanie, it was so hot during those days, your suntan must be epic as this beautiful video!
Haha, thankyou! I had to remember to put on sunscreen to not get burnt, it was roasting.
Wow they’re all beautiful. My favorite was the horizontal one near the end of your view during a picnic. I love how you used several smaller drawings on the page.
Lovely work Melanie why oh why didnt you swim, the water is so refreshing and cooling, I love your colour palette.
Thanks Sonia! I think we just didn't want the extra hassle of getting wet and sandy. We're also not keen sea swimmers. Happy to sit beside the water and watch.

Do you then use your sketches for longer paintings? They’re so lovely-
Thankyou. Yes, certainly, all my calendar drawings were inspired by my sketchbook outings.
I love those little tins! Where did you find them?
You should find them in this video description ruclips.net/video/vAbkJj2Gbug/видео.html thanks!
This is a gr4eat sketchbook tour - really inspiring. Can you tell me what your little watercolour pallet wa? Did you put the colours in yourself or was it bought ready for landscape?

Thanks so much. You should find them listed in this videos description ruclips.net/video/vAbkJj2Gbug/видео.html they are really handy!
My husband eats slow and I eat too fast so the sketching I do at meals slows my eating down and he takes as long as he wants. 😅
That sounds like a good balance!
I see you use watercolor pencils and water to color in some of your sketches. That inspired me. Thanks
