The History of SWAT.
Within the world of special forces, a unique place is held by Police Tactical Units. A specialized unit within a police force, they more often resemble tactically equipped soldiers rather than a normal street police officer. These units are trained to handle situations beyond the capabilities of standard police departments. Using military grade weaponry and equipment, these tactical units are able to tackle counterterrorism operations, hostage situations, dangerous search and arrest warrants, and other dangerous situations that are threatening public order.

The Black Panther situation is entirely misrepresented here. The group were attacked by the police who were forcefully trying to evict them. You should do a video or make an edit. Cause this was police brutality. The police even tried to cover it up. So video or an edit would really help showing people what really happened.
It should be mentioned that the Black Panther shootout was provoked by the police. Due to political and racial reasons ( which was very common at the time ) the police was forcing the people inside the house saying they are there to evict them even though they paid rent. Intimidation tactics and threats by the police soon lead to provocation of violence started by the police who later trying to cover it up by using their nails to create holes only one confirmed shot by the Black Panthers. This was discovered on a investigation. The SWATs wounded several of them for being in a civil rights movement.
Both the FBI and police under the leadership of J.Edgar Hoover were battling civil rights groups.
This raid wasn’t covered by the NEWS since it was a common sight at the time.

A small correction would be:
GSG9 is not just a "regular" SWAT team. They are the tier-1 domestic counter-terrorism unit of Germany which most closely resembles a mix between the FBI HRT (due to being the federal polices tactical team) and the SAS (due to their equipment and training).
The regular SWAT teams in Germany are called SEK (Spezialeinsatzkommando)
So, that would make them closer to Delta Force than a SWAT team?
GSG9 is a federal law enforcement unit that has special forces training and can and has deployed overseas to deal with situations.
GSG9 would basically be German ST-6
Aether of the North, well Delta was created in 1977, GSG-9 in 72, so maybe Delta is like them.
@@ethanor They helped with training when Delta Force was founded in 1977. And probably still train with each other regularly. So yes; there is some significant overlap in both units capabilities and training.
But there are also important differences. Mainly due to Delta being a military unit and GSG9 being a civilian/police unit. Which for instance grants GSG9 non-combatant status if deployed in foreign countries. Or causes GSG9 to put much more emphasis on taking any perpetrators alive, even if that means a higher risk.
My father is retired swat from Seattle in the late 90s and early 2000s. The stories he tells me could be written down in a book and made into a movie. Thing is, I know that every single one of them is true to a fault.

@@leguichettravel1599 Door Kickers was originally on PC. Most of the game though is pretty much your units shooting and killing suspects. Sure, there are arrests, but only in specific misions.
A better alternative that does have arresting and in the style of DK (Not Action Squad) is Police Stories.
Some facts : Some SWAT teams during 1960s, 1970s and 1980s were also issued with M3 Grease gun and M1 Thompson for close quarter combat, other than the M16.

It means Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais (Translating to Police Special Operations Batallion), and is a very well trained force, albeit no longer wearing their famous black uniforms for better camouflage, the symbol is still a symbol of force and tactical power for all forces here in Brazil

A few years ago I talked to a gentleman who was one of the first swat members of the city of Miami PD. One thing that I remember was their first SMGs where Resing submachineguns from wwii

It’s amazing to see how much Swat has evolved over the years especially in Miami. There’s a cops like documentary called Miami SWAT from like a decade ago that I’d highly recommend.

Thats such an odd gun to have compared to an M1 carbine. Maybe its because of ammunition capacity for a surplus M1 only having 15 rounds, but it was still the .45 caliber and is probably easier to control compared to a full-auto reising
As someone who is enthusiastic about military uniforms and weaponry, these unit highlight videos are what I love! I really like observing the the amount of details in the equipment, clothing and firearms used for each unit and faction showcased in these videos along with the tactics and history of each varying units. Awesome work!
Alot of police forces get thier gear straight from the DOD surplus. People think police are turning into the military, but if you could get a ton of better equipment, for a fraction of the price, who wouldn't take that offer?

Never thought that I'd be learning so much about the history of SWAT units today. But yet here I am and I'm thankful for Simple History doing great stuff like this.
The AR-15 platform was preferred over the MP5 because is more flexible (more accessories, range/weight/caliber performance are more balanced), not because "the 9mm has low stopping power". With double tapping and modern ammunition the 9mm is still extremely valid.
I would rather have a MP5 in a CQB situation especially in a building

@@contor7 it’s just the rate of fire difference for me, and low recoil. plus the mp5 is actually compact, and it takes only a second and a half to put 20+ 9mm in a general area with one, but yeah stopping power is at a loss

an M4 RPM is anywhere from 750 to 900
the M4 is superior in every regard compared to the MP5
Love LAPD SWAT. Those guys are phenomenally trained. Small in number but they’re the only police force that trains with delta force and other special forces
LASD SWAT(SEB) also train with other tiers of special forces and are incredibly well trained, and I do believe they've trained with foreign agencies like Germany's GSG9. I am sure that the LAPD is not the only agency in the US that actively trains with USSOCOM operators. It just happens more often with big departments. Imagine NYPD's counter-terrorism or ESU divisions.
The FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team training course is a copy of SFOD-D training but modified due to it’s mission set and like you said, they also train with military special forces.

There was also the North Hollywood shootout in 1997 that brought LAPD SWAT back into the limelight, due to their procurement/commandeering of weaponry capable of defeating improvised heavy body armor capable of stopping low-velocity rounds from shotguns and handguns (what most police were armed with on the scene).
Err, yeah, you're talking about the shootout with two men dressed in heavy armor wielding light machine guns and tons of ammo?
The police and SWAT literally looted gun stores nearby, completely smashing windows and "acquiring" the shops firearms. When they finally killed one and immobilized the other for arrest (after both sides shot several thousand rounds, was pretty gnarly) they didn't compensate for the ammo used, property damage, and missing guns (some were returned but they didn't provide any form of compensation)
Those stores who got their guns back would display the firearms as being used in the N. Hollywood shootout which sold fast.
SWAT showed up at the north holloywood shootout at the last 15 min of it.
@@nexpro6118 If I remember correctly, we're also the ones to take them both out immediately, with the sgt. Swat leader refusing the 2nd gunman's plea to end his life. There was a few hour shootout with the cops prior (that's including the cops with their newly "obtained" firearms raiding gun shops)😐....

I was a hostage at a training scenario for the Norwegian variant - Deltagruppen. It was silent for hours until suddenly the power was cut, we heard loud bangs and short bursts of gunfire and 40 seconds later the "terrorist" that was guarding us were "gunned" down and we were freed. You do not mess with these guys!

My highschool once had a SWAT team leader who was a student of the school showing his unit tactics and hostage rescue drill during the field days

I want to give a massive shout out to the London police specialist firearms unit as I was a civilian drinking nearby the location where the 2017 terrorist ramming/stabbing attack happened in London. I was less then half a mile away about to head home from seeing a band when it occurred and it so incredibly scary. I can’t appreciate enough on how professional the armed response teams responded let alone the Met police that evening.

Oh yeah, SCO19 responded in just 7 minutes through all that London traffic. Very impressive.
Whilst it's appropriate for the cities to separate armed and unarmed officers, I think more rural police units should be routinely armed and trained to speed up response times to emergencies in the rural areas, such as what happened at Dunblane and Cumbria.

The NYPD doesn’t technically have a swat team but the ESU takes on that role.
Toronto and the RCMP also have ERT (Emergency Response Team) similar to SWAT or ESU

In New York City, they have the NYPD Emergency Service Unit( ESU) which was formed in the 1930s. They do swat and rescue operations.
Another notable addition would be the mention of the SWAT also receiving an upgrade in order to combat certain scenarios after the North Hollywood shootout.
It's weird to think that we had like a 15 year period where cops were getting into semi regular gunfights with various paramilitaries and domestic terrorist groups, and we just don't really talk about it.

One of my favorite games to play back in the day was swat 2 on PC. You commanded a swat team and deployed it on various situations executing search warrants , hostage situations.
I miss playing that game.

same but with swat 4, would be nice to have some modern strategy game swat units in "realistic" scenarios with all the prep and tactical gameplay it would need. i think the closest mainstream swat game would be xcom quimera squad
You should check out a game called "Ready or Not." It's like a modern version of the SWAT franchises, it's made by Void interactive.

One pretty cool thing is how different SWAT teams can be too. Most are part time, added on top of patrol duties, but LA and Houston have a full time team, that I know of for sure at least.
Houston PD SWAT also has a fully auto FN P90 issued. Always thought that was cool.
Toronto Emergency Task Force (ETF) has 2 full time teams.
Which is why think that the only US SWAT teams comparable to the German SEK are these full-time teams, though even they don't really compare to the GSG9.
FBI Hostage Rescue Team (HRT). Inspired by SFOD-D (Delta Force) they specialize in counter terrorism. They would make a great specific episode.
They did a great job in Waco, TX I heard.

0:45 the GIGN is part of the Gendarmerie, which makes them soldiers since the Gendarmerie is considered military, that’s the reason why some of them work and operate outside of french soil. But you could name, in terms of police, the GIPN or RAID.

Members of the GIGN are called operators and they are a Special Operations unit for Law Enforcement but also function as a military unit as they've been deployed to Afghanistan in the 2000s during the GWOT to carry out raids so yeah I guess it's a mixture of soldiering and policing.
The FBI also has and is capable of working and operating outside of US soil. But it’s also more common for a “Gendarmerie” to be under the military, it’s just usually how it goes with the way gendarmeries are meant to be set up.
Imagine a SWAT soldier playing Rainbow Six Siege in their spare time. Basically pretending to be at your work after finishing a day of work lol
There is a SWAT simulator games are SWAT series including SWAT 4, and Ready or Not. Ready or Not is a spiritual successor to SWAT 4. In Japan, there is similar to US SWAT was called “SAT (Special Assault Team)”

I used to watch it on discovery, they had a green beret, a navy seal, an ex British Army helicopter pilot, and some others.
For those who don’t know, the 5.56mm bullet is longer and so has more mass than a 9mm. Also packs more powder in the cartridge, as it’s a rifle round.
Not true. A typical 5.56 weighs only 62 grains. A typical 9mm ranges from 112-160 grains depending on the ammo type. The big difference is the speed. A 9mm might fly at about 1300 fps tops, whereas a 5.56 can top 3000 fps. Speed is where the bulk of the energy comes from, not mass.
As someone who both is interested in the history and also knowing a few SWAT guys since I was a kid, I got to say this is a very solid history video on the subject. Nice work, I will always appreciate SWAT history.
Interestingly enough here's a treat for some of yall in comment section, the reason it got changed to Special Weapons And Tactics was because they were trying to drive home the concept of SWAT being a life saving organization and not a military force. It kind of worked since in media where a SWAT team is the main focus, the phrase "SWAT is a life saving organization, not a life taking one." is almost always used at some point. From the show/movie SWAT to the Police Quest SWAT video games, you name it.

The German SWAT is named "SEK" (Spezial Einsatz Kommando), the GSG-9 is a special unit like the SAS or the Navy-SEALS
In US you have SWAT. They usually do missions in 5 to 10 man groups.
In Poland, we have CBŚP. They always do missions with more than 40 man in one room.
Also 4:28 Ready or Not reference.

Althought I do not have a lot of research on the topic, I am pretty sure SWAT does not handle counter terrorism operations, however they might respond to them if they happen to their area just like any other first responder, but I dont think they are sent to take out for example terrorists taking hostages like GIGN would be.
I think that's more FBI SWAT job than regular Police District swat teams but that's just my opinion.

When I was a kid I read "Chief: My Life in the LAPD" by Daryl Gates. It was my dad's book. Good read if you want some insight into police work in the 60s and 70s snd I think a bit of the 80s too. Some great stories in there as well.
My dad has a copy of that. Great book, he used to read it to me and my siblings when we were kids.
A fantastic book of a fantastic Police Chief, ultimately let down by a opportunistic city mayor who refused to authorize an increase in officer numbers to counter the increasing crime of the day.
Darryl Gates is unfortunately not well remembered, and the LA city government refuses to defend his memory. Sad to see.

a point to be noted is that they do not belong to the indian police. nsg is an indian army special force under the ministry of home affairs.

@@himneeshchowdhary820 NSG comes under the control of Home ministry, serving members of NSG are all from Central Armed Police Force and Indian armed forces. They all serve under deputation and only temporary, not permanent.
There are 2 sub divisions in NSG called SAG (Special Activities Group) and SOG (Special Operations Group).

Mid level officers are from CAPF ( AC and above ) and from the military ( army ), Senior most officers are from the IPS and its boss is always from the IPS. Please don't just associate everything with the army. NSG is a deputation based CAPF meaning it has no permanent cadre or recruitment. Army has nothing to do with NSG. You should know the basic difference between army special forces and Police Special forces. NSG is the GSG-9 OR FBI HRT equivalent in India ( Federal law enforcement special force ) . On the lines of NSG, we have specialized CT police forces in every state like OCTOPUS ( Andhra pradesh police ) Garuda force ( Karnataka police ) Thunderbolts ( Kerala Police ) Force 1 ( mumbai police )

I went to MetroCon this year, one of the days of the con I saw two fully geared SWAT officers with their carbines out but kinda just resting across their torsos, figure for quick access or something. They were nice, I regret not asking if I could have a photo taken with them tho, but I imagine it would've been a firm no due to them needing to be alert or such anyway. That's my one and only experience meeting and speaking to a SWAT member, 9/10 was pretty cool.

In Italy we have the GIS (Gruppo di Intervento Speciale = special intervention unit), an élite section of the Arma dei Carabinieri (carabineers) with police and anti-terrorism tasks; they were created in 1978 following the GSG 9 model

LAPD SWAT is the best of the best. They’re so good that other elite SWAT teams like the FBI HRT train with them. Plus a large amount of their encounters usually end with a peaceful resolution thanks to their negotiation skills.

The german SWAT i Split into two teams: the SEK, which is comandeered by the central police unit active in the Region /state of the incident, and the GSG 9 which is commandeered by the federal police and can operate in all states, and even outside the german borders.

You get access to a fistful of weapon types, as well as non-lethal weapons and gadgets. You communicate with each other through your microphones and you can see each other's bodycam as well. You decide together on which approach you take and learn how to breach and clear effectively. Either you use C4 or shoot the door hinges to gain entry, while being wary of sneaky door traps. Securing the hostages always comes first, so you need to watch your fire. Thanks to Ready or Not, you can experience being part of the SWAT from the luxury of your computer screen.

The SAS aren't a police unit, that's why they weren't mentioned. They are part of the British army as "special forces" instead.

You could check out the MOVE bombing. Where the police bombed a neighborhood in Philadelphia and then instructed the fire fighters to let it burn. They also shot at anyone trying to escape the fire

Actually, S.W.A.T are a consider as a part of heavily armed enforcers to deal such high risk task that normal police can't do...
Different countries have different naming, and their task role sometimes differently depending the situations...
But still, they have one familiar role:
They are Police, but also Paramilitary (in some country). Their role is eliminate any high threat such as terrorist attacks, hostage rescue, brutal shootout or cases. Their armed arsenals are Mil-Grade issues which gain superior firepower or having a decent force against the terrorists or others cases such as a Former Military units turns criminals shooters. Also have high CQC and Urban combat tactics for deal such high intelligence threats.
Even so, if there's a case that not even S.W.A.T can handle it,then the last resort is the National Army or Special Force to deal it (US are mostly National Guard). These are T1 CT forces and even they capable to call out the Combat vehicles such as APC, IFV, or even MBT if need. Also they have Armed Helicopter for Aerial Support if need.

Some SWAT teams in the U.S. have received backlash from some people in their communities for switching to military camouflage uniforms. Those people claim it makes them more military then police. Personally I don't care what color they where as long as the uniform keeps them safe. I do like the look of the black and blue uniform more sense those are my favorite colors.
Now you know that's from the bleeding heart liberals of the ACLU and yes I do have to say the same thing for Senator Rand Paul who also criticizes the use of military usage in urban streets of America.

On a side note the GIGN is a military unit, the french equivalent of the SWAT would be the RAID. SInce the Gendarmerie (which the GIGN comes from) is a branch of the french military.

In our county every patrolman goes to tactical school after their FTO training. When a SWAT calls goes out half of patrol puts on their gear from their trunk and rally on 2 Bearcats by 2 designated drivers and the other half answer calls. A third team is on call from off duty patrol for any second SWAT calls or high risk warrants. Other counties are adopting this approach.
