  • This is Lesson 4 in my brand new comprehensive series to teach absolute beginners how to crochet! These videos will be recorded as if I were teaching you how to crochet in person and will be 12 lessons in total.
In this video, I go into more depth about the anatomy of the chain stitch you learned in my last video so you can know how to use it to build your projects in both the row and the round. I include the standard abbreviation for a chain stitch, which you will need to know if you ever hope to read and follow a crochet pattern.
I also teach you the crochet symbol for the chain stitch, which is generally used internationally, meaning you can read a crochet symbol chart and know how to make it, no matter what language the pattern is originally written in.
This video also covers how to make a slip stitch; what they are used for in projects; how they are abbreviated; and what the crochet symbol looks like for a slip stitch.
For a free printable "cheat sheet" on what I covered in today's video, follow this link (dropbox): www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/w7xfcx...
For this tutorial, you are welcome to use the supplies you have on hand, but I do recommend that you choose a light, solid-colored yarn that is bulkier in weight (size 5 or 6) and a bigger hook (like an 8.0 or 9.0 mm hook).
If you are interested in the yarn I am using for my tutorials, I really love this Yarn for Beginners that I found on Amazon. Not only do you get 4 balls of yarn, they also send you stitch markers and several yarn needles. You can check it out here (affiliate): amzn.to/3QqYEzi
For a complete set of average-sized hooks, I recommend this set (affiliate): amzn.to/3qr0chU
If you would like a complete aluminum hook set with handles, you can find one here (affiliate): amzn.to/3OIAEpS
The bigger hook I am using in the video is a size 8.0 mm hook I purchased from Hobby Lobby, but you can also find it here (affiliate): amzn.to/459DFF2
If the 8.0 mm hook is sold out, here is another that I like (affiliate): amzn.to/45BBVEX
