As someone who's never played a single Pokémon game, this felt like murder with how blunt RT was and I loved every moment of it.
play heart gold and never bother with any other game untill they change the formula, maybe try arceus if you gonna like the heart gold one

@@RTGame Nice thing is that you can take any of the games and do one. You can choose gen1 with a very short playtime, or something like black and white where there is still so much content outside of battling, that takes more than 10 hours to finish.
Me and my wife first thought it's gonna be a meme-video where RT goes on purpose for all the controversial opinions for the laughs and chat reactions. But it turned out to be a FULL-QUALITY analysis video, especially during the games section.

An IGN review getting memed on doesn't really change that the entire last quarter of the game is just water and caves.
As memed as it is, it's a legit complaint. Too many water routes limits your movement speed and the variety of Pokemon and trainers you encounter

His placement of Charizard hurts me. Yes he is overrated, what the heck is he doing as Leon's Ace??? That's some BS hands down. But Pepperoni the Charizard, my first ever starter at 12 years old, meant the world to me. There's a reason he's overrated, he's cool!

XD remains one of my favorite Pokémon games ever. It’s wonky in the best way but god it’s extremely fun and the battles are great
I really want to play it and actually beat it, but 10 years ago I played it with a corrupted memory card. Game reset, I went through a good chunk of the beginning so many times that even now I still remember how the intro goes. And the beginning is just so slow when you have done it 10 times already. Its an odd situation where I have burned out on a game but still want to play it
He has to play ultra sun and moon, they add the battle tree
Charizard got 2 mega evolutions. Latias and Latios had to share one.
Then there is slopoke that has 2 evolutions, on of it has mega evolution, and has a regional version

i 100% disagree with about half of your opinions however 1000% love and respect you for the decision making behind it all. the great thing about pokemon is that there’s something for everyone, i take ages to complete a game so the main play aspect is important to me, i never get to the postgame properly, visuals are important to me so early gens are not great to play in my opinion. another banger of a video.

I can get a solid 60-80 hour on the main game, so I agree with you that the story often creates my opinion over a game. As a steamer who puts tons of hours into the postgame content, I see why RT values that more.

Gen 5 limiting available Pokémon during the campaign is the best decision they ever made. I wish every main title respected its generation enough to do that.
YEAH honestly i was sad when arceus didnt have my beloved quagsire but that forced me to think about my team and i tried new things. i settled on another water/ground, gastrodon, but i also had rowlet instead of my usual fire starter, and i picked up a purugly who made me restructure my team again because i wanted it but the only one i could maybe replace was my fire type. arceus ended up being really standout to me because of it, despite only playing 3 pokemon games.

Pokémon designs would be much more hit-or-miss if nearly 200 new Pokémon had to be created each generation.
One reason I dislike XY is that they give you all these rare cool Pokémon randomly in common areas that devalue them. Focus on the new Pokémon and be selective and intentional where Pokémon are found.
I typically like playing Pokémon games with only newly added Pokémon. I don’t get why people hated the limitations, it makes you try new stuff!
Its a shame X and Y didn’t get its definitive edition like the rest of the games as that might’ve fixed a lot of the problems there was with X and Y
As a person who grew up playing (most) every generation of pokemon starting from Gen 1, and currently finds Gen 6 to be the last best pokemon generation.... I wouldn't have turned down a "Pokemon Z".

@@WolieIsHot I feel they did need the upgrade. Like, sun and moon are good, but ultra brings them up quite a bit even if they do sacrifice the lily story for it.

Honestly, having played US/UM and S/M back to back, I honestly think you could play the Ultra games on their own and get a better experience in the post-game in those games than in Sun/Moon. The rainbow rocket storyline and the ability to traverse ultra space to catch the ultra beasts, legendaries and the occasional shiny pokemon was really well done if you ask me, plus the main story only adds on from S/M given it's basically the same game, just with more
Honestly, I found USUM’s story to be a straight downgrade, at least for main game. I also missed the UB mission’s story in Ultra, but I do like episode RR
USUM screws up the Lusamine storyline which is one of the most interesting parts of SM
My take is that USUM is an bad follow-up to Sun and Moon, but a Top 3 game in the series on its own. It’s challenging, has the most Pokémon variety of any game period, and has a lot of extra fun stuff to do over Sun and Moon (Wormholes and Surfing come to mind). It still has relatively slow pacing but it’s not as bad as SM. I think USUM is superior in every way except for the story, but even then it has a good story for Pokémon, since Lillie, Gladion, and Guzma are still some of the best characters in the series.

Personally, I think a lot of the points made about SWSH are countered by the fact that it is a 90 dollar pokemon experience that sucks all the way until you unlock the 30 dollar expansion you bought.
Sw/sh should be a d. I could justify a f or a c but b is too high, this being the first Pokémon game with dlc, having poor graphics and bad animations (which to be honest didn’t bother me too much), an elementary story and average characters, and the whole dexit situation should keep it much lower. The wild area was bland too. The reason it’s not f is because it’s fun- the dlc is worthwhile too. But the $90 for the complete story and poor quality put it low on the Pokémon tier list IMO.

DLC is kind of a moot point in a series like Pokémon, where since game 2, you've needed to pay effectively full price again to have access to the "completed" version. Like, I'd rather play for Gen 8, then later DLC, or both at once, than need to buy and play separately Sun and Moon/USUM for the full content of Gen 7.
The main issue I had with the game was that it felt clunky/not really fun to play
@@oscarmccormack1611 I disagree. I've always played just one of the two games and never felt like I was missing much content at all. If game exclusive mons are that important to me, I could just find a friend and trade, but the story between games is practically the same with some words swapped out. That's not the same as needing to pay an extra 30 dollars for an already 60 dollar game to be fun. I skipped gen 8 at the suggestion of many of my friends who played the game. Almost $100 saved on a game that would be worse than playing gen 5 again, or maybe trying my hand at the platinum cartridge I never played.

Platinum did some great tweaks to the Galactic storyline, and 4th gen was what really solidified an enemy faction that legitimately wanted to bleach reality as we know it. Planetary conquest and petty thievery? Yeah, fuck no, let's rewrite EVERYTHING. Cyrus's fascist ravings were what really sold me on the game's theme as a whole. I haven't played BD/SP yet, but I'm very curious as to how they spun the story. Probably my next play.

Seeing that he hasn't played Ultra Sun/Moon and having heard his criteria for ranking the games I think he would like it a fair bit, it cuts back on the hand holding of the base game, significantly revamps the story and gives characters that were neglected more to do (Guzma becomes one of the best characters in Ultra for example) as well as adding a better post game with the Ultra Space mechanic making filling out your national Dex easier and bringing Looker back for the delta episode, I don't know if RT will see this comment but I would definatly say he should try them out because I think he would enjoy them a lot.
It was just soooooooo much better than Sun and Moon. Hopefully he goes back and plays it cuz it was great
The only thing I prefer in Sun and Moon over USUM is Lusamine. She went from my favourite villain to just being there..
I'm iffy on the story in USUM, in a few way it adds to the story of the original, but imo it *completely* guts the best part of SM's story, that being the dynamic between Lillie and her mother. Instead it replaces the climax of the story with a somewhat more generic "big bad legendary might destroy the world, stop them" plotpoint with Necrozma. Mind you, I really like Necrozma and the battle was cool, but the climax in the original games with directly confronting a crazed Lusamine works *so* much better. Also, Lillie leaving permanently after the game's end works much better for the story than her just kinda sticking around (and having a fully trained team the next time you talk to her during the RR postgame, despite having been a trainer for like 2 days at that point).
Not to mention that side story at Aether Paradise where you battle the leaders of the teams from the previous games, including freaking Giovanni and his Mewtwo! That entire part of the post game made it completely worth it.
The difficulty in the ultra games was a great change too. Coming in from the originals I was NOT expecting Guzma to kick my ass hard enough to drive me to thinking "my best strategy here is to bait the sucker punch with my decidueye and use stat boosting items until I can obliterate his whole team". It was overkill and a cheesy move on my part, but it's nuts how no other pokemon game had really forced me to think of a strategy in the story beyond "hit them with a super effective move and heal when needed"

One thing I wish they'd done for Gen 6 is make the obligatory Electric alternate starter a tri-stage and give its final form a D&D role as well. Perhaps as a Bard or Cleric.

@@lucisgallery1412 paladin could be fighting/fairy, steel/fairy, electric/fighting, fire/steel, etc. Basically some combination of a 'physical warrior' type like fighting or steel paired with a 'holy light' type like fairy, fire, electric, etc. I think fighting/fairy probably makes the most sense but steel/fairy could also be cool if they give them a metal sword/mace/shield or armor
Got myself a copy of Shield+DLC recently, and I’m already so tired of being told how unbeatable Leon is, and the constant interruptions that show me EXACTLY where to go. I’ll believe in RT’s words and grind through to the DLC content.
That’s the main issue, base sword and shield is just so boring, but the dlc is very fun. Wish I could just play the dlc tbh

I’m glad Black n White we’re up there, I genuinely loved basically everything in both games, they will always be my most favorite and I’m grateful that my 4-5th grade friend convinced me into getting it. Actually worked for it by mowing lawns.

Its so nice too seeing that they finally get the recognition they deserve. People HATED gen 5 especially when it was newer, but overall I think they're my favorite games in the franchise now despite being a former gen 4 stan.

SOLD ME ON BW2 , YOU SIR, ARE A LEGEND! i am dead serious when I say, my friends HATE that I favor BW and BW2 over things like diamond/pearl and hgss, but the game had BANGER music, a good story line, a challenging yet not too grindy system, wonderful level design, and now to mention THE WONDERFUL SPRITE ANIMATIONS.
It is such an amazing game that I restarted it to play through it again, and the story and music are BEAUTIFUL, I 100% agree with you on that. I do prefer Gen 4 a tiny bit more just because my first Pokémon game was platinum, but Gen4&5 are my favorite of all
I hate the gen 5 Pokemon, but BW2 are easily the best Pokemon games I've played. They have so much content, and pretty much all of it hits.
BW1s issue is that the pokemon roster is so bad. Not because the dex sucks (although it is subpar imo), but mostly because all of the actually cool pokemon are put in the endgame or even in the postgame.
I straight up forgot a new entry to the franchise is coming with revealed starters while watching this. Like, there are 8 sets of starters at the moment. It’s gonna be interesting to see how they go about the next region, and I hope it’s better in story/progression than Gen 6, 7, and 8 have been.

In my opinion they landed with a wet thud but the DLCs might redeem them like Sword and Shield. I wanted to like them but after Arceus, I don't know the open world just felt less interesting.

Everyone always praises the hard rom hacks for being hard, but no one mentions how they aren't fun.
Edit: probably a better word to use would be that they are Grindy
"How they aren't fun" is really an unfair statement I believe. Do I say that Emerald Kaizo is a fun game for everyone? No, god I'd hate playing it probably because I suck at playing Pokémon games, and most people wouldn't like it. But it is fun to people, why else would it be played (so much)?
Admittedly, EK is probably one of the hardest out there, but even just look at a Drayano hack like Blaze Black/Volt White (2): Hella challenging but at the same time they add so much to the games.
Not saying that you are wrong but having it too easy is equally bad.
I remember beating bw2 champion with a single pokemon that was 10 levels lower the champion pokemons because i could spam items.
Making it harder doesnt mean that you need to make it impossible, a challenging game can be fun too.
The problem is that Pokémon games give so many advantages to the player. Such as way more items, switch mode, mega evolution. The trainers get zero of these benefits (most of the time) and they rarely switch which might be the most important thing you could do in a single battle.
I’m not asking Pokémon games to be ultra hard, I just wish the fights were on the same level as me which most rom hacks achieve.

Correct, imo. If you want hard games, and Pokémon, that's fine. But you need to get the rom hacks in that case, because being difficult is the opposite of what Pokémon is about, at least from what I can tell.

I have to say, I agree with most of these EXCEPT Ruby/Sapphire and X/Y.
With R/S, personally, I loved all the pokemon, the story, and I wasn't huge into post-game until recently for pokemon. But the thing that makes R/S high for me (high B, low A) is a VERY personal thing that I acknowledge makes me very biased towards it.
Ruby and Sapphire are the pokemon games that really got my older brother and me to bond. I always say Diamond and Pearl were MY first pokemon games, but before those, I would get to play my mother's copy of FR/LG and R/S. Pretty much I'd just fight random pokemon and trainers to help my mom grind while she was too busy with work or... ya know... being a mom. And before R/S, my brother didn't really want to do anything gaming-related with me. We have a big enough age gap where he would think that playing video games with his little brother was lame and dumb. When I started playing R/S, I got to understand pokemon enough that I could really talk about it with my brother. And have FUN talks about it at that. Ever since then, my brother and I have always shared a deep love of pokemon and constantly talk about it to this day. So familial bonding definitely bumps those games up for me.
I don't have any cute or fun stories about X/Y... I just loved em! I loved the region, the story (although I admit I don't remember any of it now), the pokemon, the blend of old and new pokemon.... and most of all... Mega Evolutions. God I hope Megas come back.... I loved that mechanic SO much. Also I personally had no struggles with the circle pad and the rollerblades... but that's very subjective!

Best spinoff games are pokepark and pokepark 2 imo, they were just so fun to play as a kid and I would get 100% immersed in them and still love it to this day because of the nostalgia and how cute it is
Seeing the chat go ballistic when sword and shield got such a good rating was hilarious. They have a point though, including the dlc in the rating doesn't really feel right, if you need to spend even more money to make the game actually enjoyable, that's always a bad move.
The again when Rt was ranking Legends:Arceus and puts it at B, Some were like "But what if the Dlc though?" And i have a feeling those are the same people that said that about SwSh
I'm actually a big fan of the DLC in hindsight. Full disclosure: I didn't buy it because Sw/Sh left such a bad taste in my mouth, and the DLC had features that should have just been in the base game.
But when you compare two $30 DLC against a $60 "third game"...I gotta give it to the DLC

@@tomc.5704 I mean, he values the post-game the most. And thats what the DLC is. It maybe would have been better to rate the DLC seperately (like the usual third game), just to show how bad Sw/Sh really were. But even then I would have rated it lower. Cause a third game always costs 60$. No matter if you bought one of the first two or not. Many people played Platinum without first buying Diamond or Pearl. But if you want to play the DLC, you need to buy Sword or Shield AND the DLC. So its not 30$ against 60$, but more 60$ against 90$.
AGREED. They are 100% right. If you have to spend more money on the game to make it *actually a good game*, that is a sign that it is *not a good damn game.*

I remember being super excited as a kid to finally find a Paras early enough I could justify using it, only to learn the hard way how dirty they did him in Gen 1. If the move pool was only better, I know I would have loved him as a solid back up to Bulbasaur.

I will say, Dan. Ultra Sun and Moon have a better Pokémon experience than the former, especially in the terms of Nuzlockes. So many fights and events are changed for the better, and the same fights are also much harder, with random trainers now having Pokémon with perfect IVs, and some having better AI. The totem Pokémon are changed as well, and improved upon, making them a much more difficult experience, moreso than the former. The pacing is a little more solid, however its help pandering still exists, but its setting has been taken from the former, and definitely improved upon. It’s a good comparison to make sun/moon and Ultra Sun/Moon to Diamond/pearl and Platinum. There’s no reason to really ever play sun and moon again, when the Ultra games exist, and simply they are a better experience than the former. The Ultra games definitely boosts the Sun and Moon structure to a B from a c/c+.
Seeing you give the gen 5 games the recognition they deserve makes me so damn happy, it's my favorite gen. I still have physical copies of both Pokémon Black & White 2 and a physical copy of Black, I've replayed them multiple times and never get tired of it. I hope you'll maybe consider doing a nuzlocke or a playthrough for Pokémon Black/White or Black 2/White 2 in the future.

Pokemon X was the first Pokemon game I ever played. Kalos is really unique as a region, I like it a lot. A lot of gen 6 pokémon are my favorites like Fennekin, Goodra and Aegislash. But it is a shame that it is so easy and forgetable. Makes you wonder if the reputation of Gen 5 at the moment was the reason XY turned the way it was.
XY were the first games with a fully orchestrated soundtrack, and it was an amazing one at that!
It also brought Pokemon into true 3D and added Mega Evolution (the only good battle gimmick) as well as the Fairy type and, as you said, some of the best new Pokemon in recent memory.
My only qualm is the lack of difficulty. I've played through the story multiple times and never had an actual challenge.
Also the story, though as you say it was coming off the back of B2W2 so it wouldn't have compared favorably anyways.
Oh I firmly believe that Gen 5s initial reception is what caused Pokemons problems today. Why would they change up the formula when Gen 4 was super formulaic and everybody loved it and when they did change the formula in Gen 5 everybody hated it?
There was a lot of good pokemon in XY but it got pushed to the side since the game focused on mega evolution and older pokemon
To this day my most.memorable playthrough of a pokemon game was in Pokemon Y because my brother and I traded our starters for Eevees and did our best to catch a minimum of pokemon, playing alongside each other and battling after each gym fight. Something about making it into an actual journey, him evolving his even into an Umbreon at the first chance he got and turning it into a curse/wish wall while I waited until nearly endgame to get a Glaceon and finally beating him in a 1 v 1 with snow cloak and blizzard, it was one of the few times I can say I've played these games alongside someone else jnstead of just playing, and it'll keep that game at the top of my list no matter how objectively other games are.
It was also my first Pokemon game! I havent replayed it in years, and yeah the story is eh but I really like the legendaries and starters ! Plus nostalgia is strong

Cyndaquil is my favorite starter, and not for it’s design, it’s stats, or anything like that.
It’s because in every Mystery Dungeon game (excluding Gates to Infinity) I’ve gotten Cyndaquil in the personality quiz every time without fail. No guides, nothing. So he’s just a very special mon to me.

The hoenn region gets so much flak for the water, which honestly i find so unfair. The region has so much variety, especially compared to places like kanto or johto, which I would argue are entire regions that take place on "a road near the woods", except for when they sometimes go into said woods.
I thought the climbing waterfalls and going underwater were cool! I am also someone who lives in the tropics though, maybe it wasn't as relatable for some other players but I'll always be soft on Hoenn as a region myself for it.
@@minticedtea as someone who lives in the frozen north and for most of my childhood thought 50m wide rivers where some sort of herculean trial from the gods really loved the underwater parts, its like the most iconic part of the games for me (except for stupid child me failing over and over again with the bike "puzzle" in rayquaza's tower) and its the only pokemon game where i actually wanted to explore any water at all, in every game before and since i just optimise my pathings to get out of the water as fast as possible because its just more bland and worse blue colored grass imo
kanto and johto are ass compared to hoenn. sure lots of water but there’s so much variety like the route by the weather institute with the tall grass & invisible keckleons was so cool for its time. town design was top tier too

And I will die on the hill that mega-evolution set us down a path of poorly thought out, awfully balanced battle gimmicks that never should have been.
All it is digivolving from digimon, giving pokemon a temporary stat boost and possibly even type changing and awfully designed model because...reasons. All it did was power up competitive meta pokemon since the majority of mega evolutions went to competitive meta pokemon, and it set this precedent for Game Freak to try and 'spice up' battles with mechanics that simply don't work, aren't fun, and do nothing for balance, when all people have been asking for is direct control of the pokemon in battle, being able to have the pokemon run around, dodge, and attack like in the anime.
The one battle mechanic people have been begging for in mainline games has only appeared twice in the franchise; and it was both of the PokePark games on the Wii. A pair of side games had the battle mechanics people have wanted in the main games for years.
Bulbasaur's probably the best out of all the starters in terms of progression. The bulb blooming into a flower is a really neat way to signify its growth and no other starter has been able to convey that same sense of cohesion without being boring.
The actual Pokemon doesn't change that much though, just the flower

1) I think that the DLC for Sword and Shield should have been rated separately from the main game due to the fact that they’re locked behind a paywall

@dozensofknives9104 weird. I had to put up decideye in the box and that takes a lot for me to do. I never had to baby Chikorita that hard or for so long because it could still support the team with its leech seed and its powders. Decideye though, from early Ula ula to poni. 10+ levels. Never could use him. Not for lack of trying. He was evenly leveled with the rest of the party so that wasn't the problem. He was just too damm slow and had too many weaknesses.
Despite Dhelmise's own stat spread, and same duel typing, it was somehow way more useful. The effective third STAB as an ability just made it better in every way.
Side note for Sword and Shield, while the DLC may make the game more fun, I should NOT have to pay an extra $30 to get the enjoyment from a game that should have been in the base game.

I never got Sword and Shield originally just bc I was petty and they didn't have my fav Crobat in the base game, but I'm still glad I chose to just watch a playthrough and spend the 60$ on other games. I'm kind of jealous that everyone else loves their first starter. I picked Chimchar in Diamond because I found him the cutest then he just sort of got bigger and had a weird outfit with his evolutions whereas the other two starters looked badass in their final evolutions. I tossed him in storage as soon as I found a Ponyta (which is a really boring pokemon but at least didn't anger me) and never looked back.

It’s a shame that Charmander always gets dragged down with Charizard - while I still like Charizard he gets waaay too much special treatment (just like RT) said, but I adore Charmander’s design and Charmander was the Pokémon that actually got me into the franchise when someone gave me my first Pokémon card ever (base set Charmander)
Its mad how the Middle Evolutions, especially Charmeleon are so Underrated. Yet its between one of the best known starters and the most insanely overrated Gen 1 pokemon.

I want to like Charizard, as Charmander was my very first Pokemon... but the love for Charizard has to either stem from nostalgia, design, or competitive qualities. Every new Charizard gimmick dilutes the nostalgia. And if you SHOULD like the new design, you will get to enjoy it for a single generation before it gets tossed to the side for some new gimmick. Putting the spotlight on the same starter over and over again is just tiring.

Oddly enough, despite enjoying the series for years, it was also my first game. I love a good story, I can turn and look at my full bookshelves from my computer and there was very little in the game to interest me in Sun and Moons story. I loved the idea, I loved the setting and regional variants were great. . .of course I never went back and finished Sun and Moon.
I'm a longtime player who's been around since gen4, Sun/Moon are actually some of my favorites! The characters are really fun and I found Hau really endearing, a lot of people are annoyed at the "hand holding" but when you consider your character just moved to the region, he really does feel like a new friend showing you around and caring about you. It's so cute

Gen 7 will always hold a special place in my heart. Sun and Moon was the first time I got to follow from it's announcement to release. I also was obsessed with the movie Lilo and Stitch when I was a kid, to the point where I wanted to go to Hawaii more than anything, so alola reminded me a bit of that time during my childhood too. I also say it has the second best story behind Black and White, enjoyable characters, and I liked that they changed the gym formula.

I would keep Sword and Shield in F despite how good the dlc was. Honestly? It was pretty cool. Definitely gave you some fun things to do. I spent a good bit of time messing around in the dlc to build Pokemon and Pokemon teams. Aside from that, the dlc was still pretty bland and limited.
But even so the dlc is what the main game should have been from the start, and even then they need to add more to it just to make the game more than just decent. They made us pay 60$ for an unfinished, abhorrent base game and then had the gall make us pay another 30$ to just so we'd have a reason to play it. I personally refuse to endorse the game at all soley because of scummy business practices like that.
If I don't get a good game without dlc (unless the dlc is 100% free), then the game isn't worth buying. Buying it is directly supporting the creation of video games with minimal effort put into them, and I care too much about video games and the industry to let that slide.
Same reason SwSh are the first Pokemon games I completely passed on. (I was _going_ to pass on X and Y, but decided to just give X a try... and was baaadly disappointed. Pokemon Amie was so much more interesting than the game itself that I almost didn't beat it.)
Point being, the DLC being decent does not make up for the fact that the base game is bad and you shouldn't have to pay more to make it decent.
I agree with that sentiment. The fact that such a good DLC was sold separately is a sin and i would rate it lower if I could just because of that. Crown Tundra was an extremely good area and the fact it was price gated makes me vehemently upset.

I understand all of your points except for the Sword and Shield DLC. If your game is trash without its DLC then those DLC should have been part of the base game. To act otherwise even for a list made for entertainment is to give way too much leeway to greedy companies. I mean, it was frigging thirty dollars and you could only play it by buying a boring sixty dollars game first! If you really think the Sword and Shield DLC is a completely different and much better experience than the base game then rank it separately.
Not to mention he put it on the same level as arceus.
I think he was rating it as a single 100$ game, and honestly, when you have a full time job 100$ isnt *that* much, I just dont have one of those right now.
Its hard to argue against it being B rank when you consider how much time streamers spend playing it together, its a fun multiplayer game for them.

I respect the SWSH take, I also absolutely despise the main game and therefore did not buy the DLC because I didn't want to support it. The point Dan is forgetting is that you have to by another full price game to make SWSH enjoyable in the slightest. You should split up the main game and the DLC on rankings like these because they're two entirely separate entities.

Objectively I can see how SWSH would be low-ranked, but I believe it’s be at least a D. Dynamax is dragged through the mud, but it’s not as bad as people say. It’s on par with Megas in both power and reason for existence (which there is none), but more restricted for better balance. To once again compliment the Crown Tundra (and beat down Kanto), there are lore implications that the Galarian legendary birds were discovered before the Kantonian ones.

I hated the roller skates with a passion. The fact you had no choice to take them off was awful.

I feel like judging a game off post game content is very fair, but judging Sword & Shield on DLC which you have to pay ADDITIONAL MONEY FOR isn't fair to the other games. I consider DLC very separate from a game, yeah they're connected by the fact that the DLC is FOR that game but if the only real positive you can find is DLC you have to pay extra money for the game fuckin sucks

@@daaaaaaanny But Serperior is so cool, and the fact it learns leaf blade early is great. In fact, all of the gen 5 starters learn great moves early. Flame charge, razor shell and leaf blade are an improvement from ember, water gun and razor leaf by a massive margin.

Giving Sw&Sh a B is very generous, especially given how expensive it is. The main game barely holds together and is too short for its price tag, the DLCs are mediocre and too short for their price tags, it completely removes a lot of Pokemon for basically no reason, dynamaxing is the worst super-charge gimmick, and the plot is hot garbage. The post-game is good, the new Pokemon are great, but it's not up to Gamefreak's usual, let alone above average. I'd give it a D at most.

I love how RT uses logic, and not nostalgia to rank all the Pokemon games. And I agree that the first few generations of Pokemon games are severely overrated and do not match up with later titles.
I agree with you but Emerald stands a cut above others. It is certainly better than Gold, Silver and Crystal

Except not really because if he had used logic instead of nostalgia, HGSS would have been a lot lower than they actually are. :/ They are fraught with issues that he didn't even touch on, many of which were issues he had with *other games* that he ranked lower.
I respect and understand were RT is coming from, but It's not nostalgia to rank it higher than f tier. It's like say fire is f tier because LED bulbs exist. They had to come up with R/B/Y to make great games like B2/W2

I was expecting to be offended by Sun and Moon since it’s my favorite but the points you made are actually SO true the pacing was horrific (Also, Ultra sun/moon was much better and had much more post game content- like a LOT more) this list i actually totally agree with 😱
I actually hated USUM. The whole time I was playing it I was like, man I wish I was playing SM instead. I thought the post game sucked and hated the changes to Lillie's story a lot. SM is probably my second favourite mainline game though.
Personally I find that dicidueye and its regional forms are the peak of what regional forms: normal forms should be. Regional forms need to have a different enough silloughet and vibe so they are recodnizable from each other. And personally I find the other starter regional forms to be really bad even though they are good and somewhat better than the OG designs. They just don’t feel diffrent enough. Where as I feel OG dicidue way preferable, the regional form just feels like it’s the best of them.

I came into this video with X & Y being my favorite pokemon game, FULLY expecting it to get roasted, which it did. I think one of the reasons I remember it so fondly is because I also watched the entire X & Y season of the Pokemon anime. It's the only reason why I remember that one of your rivals names is Tierno, cause he was such a fun character there. But yeah Team Flare was ass lmao.
The fashion and the beauty of the region is topnotch, I just wish it was an actual challenge. XY have some of my favourite pokemon(Carbink, Avalugg, Aurorus, Dragalge) but the game is just too easy.
X&Y is probably the best the Pokemon anime has ever gotten before their reworked artstyle. I never watched after X&Y, but it definitely beats every single other arc before it. The only point it suffers from is somehow making Ash-Greninja lose to a Charizard because Ash needs to lose the tournament, and even if it was discovered his opponent was not playing fair, it's still bullshit. If Ash won at the end of that incredible arc, X&Y would be easily the best.
@@nephel6158 Dude, The Sun and Moon anime is literally fire. You gotta give it a watch even if the artstyle weirds you out. The series takes on a slice of life style and i think it works very well in Pokemon.

@@iloveaigis the reason the season was so bad was because they were dumb enough to release an exciting pilot only to follow it up with at 7 episodes of filler content. Couldn't even make it past episode eight.

As for USUM you didn't really miss much - the changes to the story made the plot weaker than Sun and Moon in my personal opinion but the quality of life changes were fantastic, so it's a really good base of operations for breeding, preparing competitive Pokemon and the suchlike. It was great at the time, but with competitive moving to the switch, people going back to Gen 7 now for a one-and-done playthrough experience are probably better playing Sun or Moon because of the story.
...and as much as it hurts to admit I will accept that my love of the Gen 3 games, console and all, are very much fuelled by nostalgia. Can't argue there! Great takes even for the ones where I didn't actually agree with you.
The thing that grates me for USUM was the disappointment with the lack of content in the worlds beyond the Ultra Wormholes. I found the Ultra Recon Squad and their home interesting, but Megalopolis boils down to being a hallway towards Ultra Necrozma. I think if they spiced up the different worlds you can venture to past the Wormholes, it would have been so much better. It was a wasted opportunity, sadly.

imo even with the issues you list for colosseum, i still think it'd deserve a C at the lowest, purely for the character it has. The animations of the pokemon are so funny and it really just didn't mind having fun with itself

Shame you haven't played Ultra Sun and Moon. It reeeeally improves on the original. Changes the story, adds new characters and content, cuts down on the cut scenes, makes it harder AND adds some post game content. One of the few games where it seemed like fans criticism was listened to and used to improve the game. It's definitely worth a play in my opinion.
I agree with most of these honestly. I don't think that it's fair to rank SwSh based on dlc though. The original game didn't have it and you have to pay for basically a whole new game, so I feel like they should be ranked separately, or count less towards its score.
Guess I have to go finish BW2 now. Funny, I didn't play it because I thought it was just a Remake of BW and wouldn't have much new content, which is the reason so many people skipped USUM. Hahaha.
The Ultra Necrozma fight alone raises it up a tier from regular sun/moon in my eyes. Although I do wish it had kept some of sun/moons story elements and cleverly incorporated them into a more fleshed out version, or made it a sequel, instead of just redoing sun and moon with a story that completely cuts out lots of the lusamine questline.
@@JacobPDeIiNoNi My number one criticism of USUM is what they did to Lusamine. My number two is the sheer amount of wasted potential in the Ultra Megalopolis plotline. I love the blue people and I love Necrozma and I just wish there was more to them.

Something I noticed when replaying BW is how bad the pacing actually was. To name one of the issues, you legitimately get stopped by what would be cutscene events in modern games on every route except the optional one to the right of nimbasa city. I think the only reason people don't notice it has the same issues as SuMo is because it's in 2D and you can more easily mash A to skip the text.

well, to be fair, the devs did try to break up the story pacing by adding optional stuff to do. like the subway, the stadiums, optional caves and a couple optional routes.
and then its questionable whether to include it, but there was also the entralink and dream world. which... are things dependent on if you have friends or were playing the game while the service existed.
I dont think I ever noticed the pacing problem as a kid because i spent so much time doing other stuff. Like I genuinely spent a couple hours on most of the side material like the musicals. I never did that in any of the other game except for sword and shield where I also never noticed the pacing until it was pointed out.
Guarantee when they remake black and white they’ll complain about it
The first significant purchase I had to save money and work towards was a DS. A week after buying it I found the little cartridge for Heart Gold, no case or anything, sitting on a bench by the park I was playing at. It started to spit rain so I took it with me back home. Totally fell in love with the game, I bought Black 1 and White 2 after and those games are still some of the best times I’ve had playing video games.
