I played so much CSPSP in the past, what a wonderful homebrew game. Working online multiplayer blew my mind as a 13yo. If I remember there was a leaderboard and at one point I was actually in second place.
that's pretty cool, sadly I never experienced the PSP's homebrew at the time, since I was pretty young and dumb to know how to jailbreak my PSP, so I stuck to the licensed games.
This would not be able without Carmack and his team making best and most optimized game engine for quake, that put even Tim Sweeny to rethink everything when he started on Unreal Engine 4.
Great vid, however the part about needing the registered version of TF PSP was probably just asking for a registered copy of Quake. Not a shareware copy.
No matter what platform it is, I always suck at installing and configuring doom/quake, and I guess this curse carried over to the PSP, I'd still love to get Quake TF working on the PSP.
I made the maps for the very first version of Quartal back in the day, more than 10 years ago. I worked closely with st1x51, which was one of the top modders of the PSP at the time. Thank you so much for covering this!
I remember having a hacked psp when I was a 10yrs old kid (around 2011). I was downloading every game I could find for the console. Somehow, the Kurok version of half-life ended up on my console and I remember having no idea what was that and how to play it. Still, I remember reading on the website I downloaded it from that it is a port of some famous PC game, so I was just strangely happy to see a full-blown PC game on this tiny screen. I still love homebrew ports and portable consoles up to this day. (Sorry for the mistakes, I’m not a native speaker)
nice story, and great english don't worry about that! Also started messing around with PSP homebrew in 2011-2012 (but I was 5-6 at the time so I never really managed to get anything done properly 😭)
ahh the good old psp homebrew scene. By far my favorite homebrew communities off all time. There's just something about the PSP that's so magical for me. Also great video. Looking forward for more videos from you.
going great from what I know, but this isn't really a big deal to me on the Vita, because it's pretty powerful. I'd say these ports on the PSP are more interesting due to the immense compromises the developers had to do in order to make these games run on the system.
The Kurok engine was impressively polished for being a homebrew quake port. Had good fun passing the pc native version on a flash drive and playing deathmatch in a high school class
In the hl1 example, you got into the test chamber from the scientifics dialog, there is a loadingscreen before entering the test chamber and if you don't go through that, you are left with an empty room
With the quality of your videos I'm surprised you have under 1k subs. I hope you make more TF2 based content in the future cause your videos have amazing quality to them!
it looks like there is a xash3d port of half life for psp that seems much more usable, but I have not tried it personally. The vita port is great though.
I actually got some info for this topic. First of all, its important to mention that none of the "low scope" of these ports is a problem with the PSP's capabilities, but rather one of optimization. The PSP was a powerhouse at its time of release, however its titles heavily relied on hard optimization and taking advantage of the hardware, which is why the GTA PSP titles hold up so well, or the metal gear titles, and Monster Hunter obviously. But this means that homebrew projects really didn't have the knowledge/resources to achieve this feat. The PSP could have absolutely ran the GoldSrc engine just fine, but the only people that could have made that happen would have been Valve. Now, my PSP is currently dead, but I remember playing around with both the Half Life and Counter Strike ports. I can't at all remember in which roundabout internet search I found it, but I did play a more updated version of the CS Portable port, which had more animation frames for the weapons and the had working bots, however instead of being able to directly control spawn, they would randomly spawn on the map, basically making all maps a deathmatch mode.
all facts lol, but in a way its understandable, independent game developers (a lot of the time just some 18 year old in his bedroom) will, most of the time, not do such a great job with concepts such as optimization when compared to a first-party developer at Sony who is incredibly familiar with the PSP, yet I still think they did a great job, but of course Valve or Sony would have made something 10 times better, and I'd love to have seen something like that on the PSP (like we saw for HL on the PS2 or tOB on PS3)
@@martfn I used to developed homebrew for the PSP (feels like a lifetime ago) and the main problem is that homebrew was not able to access hardware accelerated rendering, which severely limited the scope of what you can do. You were limited to CPU rendering. The console had the power, but you just couldn't use it with how the custom firmware worked. I remember spending countless hours in that 2D CS game, it was quite cool.
These definitely brought back some memories. Chandler (Gearsguy405), thank you for getting me into the PSP modding scene all those years ago. RIP L4Q, Gateways, and all the other dead projects.
Left4Quake was a big one, but we have never finished it. Still have an unfinished, original campaign. Many props and infected models. Brakes my heart, that all this work never came together. That being said, not a Valve game, but the NZP had more succes and much more support. Still have this desire to polish a few maps and release it, in a few years.
Also, assuming you probably know but! The native ports of Quake 1/2 on PSP smoke the old 3DS ports. I suspect that if someone packaged the data correctly on the Xash3d PSP port it would run all the other Valve GoldSource games as well. Phenomenal video for a phenomenal console, it is ludicrous to me that a PSP, especially in homebrew, can be far more performant than the original 3DS & thats 2003-2004 hardware! Fairly certain that modern PSP homebrew have been utilizing the 2nd mips "Media Engine" 333mhz processor maybe 2x333mhz vs 2x268mhz is why so far PSP ports are running better? Props to the 3DS GPU tho, seems mostly more capable over a PSP GPU (Quake 2/Xash/SM64 source ports specifically. Tested on o2DS/PSPgo/PSP2000)
It's not about just repackaging. One needs to recompile the game source code. There is available sources for HL1, Blue Shift, Opposing Force, some popular mods, but not proper CS (it's reverse engineered but doesn't match the original game) or TF (it's incomplete and only client side).
not surprised that the PSP outperforms the 3DS in a way, Sony was and still is aiming for the best performance in their systems, while Nintendo is more into gimmicks, and as long as the newest Mario game is good, it will sell well so they don't really need to worry lol
Really great channel and great content! I could see this channel becoming much bigger very quickly. I highly recommend either investing in a better microphone (if dynamic, sm58 can't go wrong, if condenser, your average audio technica can't be terrible), OR adding some subtle eq/De-Esser in your audio signal chain and maybe also speaking with a popsock/wind screen or speaking farther away. Your voice was overall not irritating, but the small lip smacks and wet mouth noises help a lot as they might alienate the more picky viewers before they can actually view your content. Great work though!
Also my two cents is that this specific video is being recommended to many valve fans and people who watch tf2. I have no previous interest in the PsP but it seems youtube found this video got interest in that valve/tf2/cs demographic, something to think about.
Thank you for the kind words! I have a recently-acquired a Razer Seiren Mini, which, despite not being anything on a professional level, can sound amazing with the correct adjustments, so it's something I'll have to work on. As for your other comment, yes I'm sure most of the views came from Valve fans, not so much from PSP fans 😅which might be the reason why my video ONLY about the PSP performed way worse than this one.
@@martfn I also hope you keep in mind that I, and every other comment here, are just random viewers voicing their opinions, and that YOU are the final decision on what should happen with this channel, it's your channel. I'm sure that's probably obvious and maybe I sound stupid for saying it, but I see it happen in a lot in newish channels that make somewhat similar styles of content. They seem to bend to the will of whatever vocal minority decides to comment what they think. The truth is the true "average" viewer usually doesn't comment. So while I'm voicing my "personal" opinion on your audio setup, the reality could be that the "average" viewer doesn't mind it at all, and changing it could be a bad idea. I'm mostly making an example but I at least hope I could put the idea in your head, since of course I don't know the kind of person you are, and you also don't know me. Great luck in the future!
@@popcornfish2807 I agree, a lot of new / small youtubers tend to have that mentality (and so did I for a long time! but this isn't my first youtube rodeo haha). for quake 1 you probably just have to put the PAK1 file from quakes base folder into the spot the quake psp rom is in. most likely. if not then its something like that

Why are you haven’t tried “Xash3D Engine - PSP Port”? You can put any Gold Source game files in it and play it. Full Half-Life and its add-ons are playable.
If they port these to the pcvita it would be wayyyy better as it has a second joystick
2:12 that is a ladder not stairs
my bad, ladder and stairs have the same word in my language, so I didn't really think that one through 😅
@@martfn yeah i was just pointing it out i knew it was just a mistake
how bout day of defeat?
4:15
did you try going into the room to trigger the loadzone
for quake 1 you probably just have to put the PAK1 file from quakes base folder into the spot the quake psp rom is in. most likely. if not then its something like that
great video
Thanks!
Half-life 1s intro is split into 3 maps with loading and the 2nd load screen is at the door where the fist version of hl on the psp starts at
Also the train bugs out lol
I would recommend looking at the 3DS too, I played nearly the entirety of HL1 on mine.
bought a 3DS last week, I might take a look at it!
@@martfn I really hope you modded it before updating, Nintendo released a patch that cut the main method of installing CFW...
@@gamethecupdog I did, Nintendo is really getting annoying with this situation, the console is 12 years old come on. That's why I love the Wii homebrew community, since the latest version (4.3) is from 2010 so we have a lot more freedom to mess around without being afraid of an update (but who knows!)
Wait there’s valve games on the psp? I gotta boot my psp up and try these
haha you should, they're not amazing but it still has some fun to it. I put the download links in the description.
cspsp looks like cs2d on steam
pretty sure it's more supposed to be a port of CS2D than of CS1.6 lol, but I didn't know about CS2D when I was making the video so I didn't talk about it :\
why is the background footage of tf2 obviously a bot or an aimbot....????
yeah it's the default tf2 bot, I spectate one of them playing and press record, since they basically work forever lol
Do you think you'll make another one of these for the VITA?
maybe, I've never really been into the vita. I made this one about the PSP because I grew up with it and I made a video about just the PSP not long ago. but idk, I might end up making one about the vita.
@@martfn it was a great vid! No pressure I was just thinking it would be interesting to see what people did with the higher processing power of the vita vs the psp
Isnt there xash3D on the PSP?
a lot of people have commented on that, yes, there is, I'll make a part 2 about it.
@@martfn Great, Id love to see it!
@@DavitTheCore it's out now, go give it a watch!
