One little correction! Vrijdag may look like vrij + dag. But in reality, like most other days of the week, it’s named after the ancient gods and planets. It’s in fact named after Freia, the highest goddess of the Old Norse pantheon. Friday = Fria’s day. Donderdag also is named after the Old Norse god of thunder who happened to be Thor, hence the English Thursday, that is, Thor’s day.

However, in reality even the other days are ultimately all named after the planets since the planets were named after the gods. In fact, the pattern for naming the days of the week in Germanic languages was directly taken from the Latin format. The Latin gods’ names were simply replaced by their Germanic counterparts..
I’m very new to learning Dutch, so forgive me. Please can you explain how to pronounce’w’. Some would say it as a ‘v’ in English but it sounds like you are saying it as a ‘w’ Does it change in different contexts? I’m finding these videos very helpful. Thank you
Hi, you need to put your upper teeth on your lower lips to pronounce 'v' in Dutch. For 'w', you need to make a little circle with both your lips, without touching any of your teeth. Hope it helps!

Vrijdag actually has little to do with "free", the name comes from the Norse goddess Freyja.
