As a very long time Power Rangers fan, I'll tell you right up that the "Go Go Power Rangers" song they used in the movie was NOT new. They just used a clip from the song they used in the 90's movie and took out "you Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers!" out of what they used, hoping nobody noticed. Well it mostly worked... Mostly.

Reboots that absolutely butcher the original source material are pretty much the norm now. I haven't watched this flop, but I did watch that Snake Eyes GI Joe prequel film and that one butchered the source material. It flopped too btw. If you're not interested in even trying to respect the original source, don't try to reboot something. It will flop big time.
Man, I COMPLETELY forgot Snake Eyes existed! Never bothered to watch it the moment I saw the casting, heard why the change was made, and then heard he wasn't going to lose his voice. That's a totally different character at that point. Then later I heard he wore the suit for 1 action scene, I think?

Well, besides the time they killed off the og Snake Eyes in a comic and replaced him with a teenaged girl. If not for the cool GI Joe Classified toys, that brand is basically dead. The Snakes Eyes film and recent Transformers one trying to mash GI Joe into there flopped. And we haven't had a good GI Joe animated show since 2010/2009.

You could argue that it did in a way. Because I believe it was meant to fail, so that Saban could sell it to Hasbro. And since they sold to a company where it seems only one person who happened to be CEO at the time wanted it, and then he passed away, leaving it to a company with no interest in the franchise. Yes, in that way, it killed Power Rangers. I do however disagree with you about the quality of the movie, the aspects of the characters, and how the story was handled. In fact, the only thing I can agree with you on is the annoying Krispy Kreme promotion. I don't care how much a company pays (and apparently from what I found, it was half the budget), it is never a good idea to make your advertisement a core plot point of the movie. Also, quick correction. The movie did make back it's budget and marketing. Not in the domestic market, but worldwide, it actually made about $50 Million in profit. I believe that Saban wanted to get out of their contract with Bandai and Nickelodeon. And set this movie up for failure. Keeping in mind the movie was completed and supposed to release an entire year before it did, when it had less box office competition. It was then pushed for a January release. January is considered the theatrical graveyard, because it is right after the holidays when nobody is looking to go to the theater. It was then pushed to March, after the release of Logan and the live action Beauty and the Beast. While two of the most anticipated movies of the year for superhero films and family films were in theaters. A lot of people have argued with me about how it doesn't make sense to try to make the movie fail. But I argue that trying to make it fail is the ONLY thing that makes their choice of when to release it make sense.
I saw this opening weekend, funny enough. It was myself and our group of wanna be film critics. We were the only ones in the theater. We went from hopeful to bored to just going all Riff Trax on this film. I grew up with this series and have a soft spot of Super Sentai. I was hoping so much that they would bring the spirit of the original series to this. Hell, when we got the o.g. opening song being used for five seconds, we started contemplating about getting our money back. This was a disappointment of unfathomable levels.

Yeah, Zyuranger is pretty goofy in its own way but it's thoroughly entertaining, and I like the characters a lot. Been intending to watch more sentai series, I've only seen random crossovers when other teams show up in Kamen Rider. Eh, the very fact that they re-used old characters and enemies means it isn't it's own thing, it's very much a remake. I do think it SHOULD have been its own thing entirely. New characters, new villains, new zords, etc.

I remember seeing this on HBO after work and had mixed feelings with it. I was just in it for the Zords... And their designs while combined was ick. Also no Tommy Oliver. We'll never get him.
Everyone having a sword was dumb, the zords looked gross and the megazord was disappointing. We just see them fall in a volcano and the megazord comes out. No cool transformation. They wanted 6 movies.....
I don’t think this movie deserved to fail at all. I loved it. The only gripes I had with it were it had too many dumb jokes, too many pop culture songs instead of a proper soundtrack and they spent too much time on the breakfast club part of the movie and not enough on the power rangers part of the movie. I’m sure a sequel would have fixed at least one of those issues
This movie came off as we want to be Transformers. With horrible vain people. The zordon backstory though is awesome it had serious potential. They did one thing well.
This movie in no way shape or form killed the franchise. It was a dud, but so was Turbo theatrically nearly 30 years ago and that didn’t kill it either. Power Rangers has been on a shoe string budget running continously for 30 years, something almost no comparable franchise had done. Having a few years of hiatus is far from being dead. Hell, they could take a decade off and still have a more consistent release history than He-Man, Transformers, and G I Joe lol
I agree the writing was awful. the designs were lazy. the hype did not live up to expectations. even with the Tommy tease at the end, nothing could save it. give it 10 years and try again.
I actually like the film other than the fact it was too slow, too long, and not enough happened. But honestly when Jason slapped the shit out of that bully the movie won me over.

I'll be honest, once you see canadian actors in a big budget movie, chances are that it's going to flop. Not knocking canadian actors, but it's just something I've noticed over the years. The time a production that involves canadian talent kinda succeeds is when it's a series, and even those are kinda of iffy.
It has failed but if we are honest, it goes on the direction we would like to have P.R as adults. Some things were awful I agree, but come on... It wasn't that Green Lantern level of bad..
This movie had some good ideas and a really great cast. Unfortunately, the movie was boring as hell, it had many, many terrible jokes that were just embarrassing. The joke at the beginning with the "cow" that the guy stole "milk" from really gets on my nerves. I actually paused the movie when I was streaming it and watched it again a whole week later. At no point did I really get a "Power Rangers" feeling from this movie. What annoyed me the most was that this movie tried too hard to be serious and was more of a modern version of the Breakfast Club. Of course Breakfast Club is a good movie. And yes movies like Schindler's List or Indiana Jones, not to mention Spartacus, Full Metal Jacket or Inception are good movies, but they can't be compared to Power Rangers and I don't want to see a Power Rangers version of these movies. I actually think that's a shame because the movie really could have been something. Above all, it could have offered a modern audience the wonderful genius of the Power Rangers franchise, but instead it was lame, non wholesome, nothing whole - in Germany we say, "weder Fisch noch Fleisch". _Yes, exactly. I'm from Germany, I'm a black German, my mother married a German man. Anyone who has a problem with that can go to hell_ Well, I have to give praise in two scenes. I thought it was brave that they made Billy Cranston autistic and I also thought it was brave to make the yellow ranger to a lesbian, that obviously excludes part of the target group and I think that's good, cuz [We don't want intolerant people anyway. In our group we]. The topic was handled far too poorly and not really developed. OK, you don't have to rub it in anyone's face, but it is what it is. Billy Cranston really does seem like a black version of Sheldon Cooper but it is not fully implemented. They could have just moved the story of the first three episodes to the 21st century and made some better fight scenes and nobody would have complained. That's the thing that annoys me the most. The movie has way too few fights, as bad as this movie is, if half of them had been fight scenes then nobody would have complained and more people would have gone to the cinema because that's what the big screen is worth. I find that so sad, I'm still ashamed of it today. When I tell adults that I like Power Rangers but the series has so much more to offer than just 30 year old teenagers whit stupid puns, fighting rubber monsters in spandex. And I don't understand why they're trying so hard to modernize the franchise. Just give us some young actors in colorful skintight suits with motorcycle helmets fighting rubber monsters and bad puns. Then add a few references to pop culture events, sports culture, cheerleading culture, makeup culture, nerd culture and maybe a few regional facts and the Power Rangers film is complete. And even if it wasn't the best film of all time, Nobody expects EVERY film to be on the same level, like Harry Potter Blade Region for Dream Spartacus, Dawn of the Dead, Avatar, the Marvel movies, The Exorcist, Goodfellas Titanic, Lord of the Rings, The Jungle Book, Gone with the Wind, Star Wars, Deadpool, The Lion King, Black Panther, Frozen. Beauty and the Beast. Simple example, I love spaghetti and I love muffins. If someone made muffins in spaghetti or spaghetti out of muffins, then I would complain because it just doesn't go together.
This movie looks soooooo boring! We barely saw the Power rangers in their suits, Rita was stupid instead of funny, the music was lame, the Mega-zord is ugly. It's not as bad as Fan4stic with all the talking in dark rooms and ONE action scene but not a good film. If i would saw it, i would give Power rangers 2017 a 4/10 😐

It's a childrens show for children. It appeals to children. The target audience. Is not meant to be analyzed as if it's some monumental work of art. It's "unhingedness" and "lol so random" humour is what 8-13 year olds want which.... is exactly who this movie is for. this is exactly the point. It's not for former 40 year old fans. It's literally a vehicle to sell toys to kids if there happens to be a storyline then it's doing about as well as any other power Rangers produced before it
Billy is not only the best part of the movie but he's the only positive autism representation in film. I'm sad we didn't get a sequel since we didn't get more billy
I can explain the race swapping. They didn't want the black guy as the black ranger. That's all there's to it. To be fair, the original zack and trini didn't like being the black and yellow rangers just because they were black and asian.
It definitely feels like a cheat to being Billy bakc after hed been dead for such a long time. An intersting idea might have been for Zordon to ressurect in Billies body.
I liked this one but I'll tell you what, Why did the pink ranger have to do revenge nudes or whatever. The red ranger was literally on house arrest. The rest were fine. Funny that they switched around all their ethnicities since the OG series was apparently super racist with the color placement lol.
The current crop of writers in Hollywood seem to think for characters to be "interesting" they have to have questionable morals. Even after they've morphed that doesn't change, and Kimberly comes across particularly petty and bitter.
That has been a long confirmed myth. Walter Jones stated himself during a con that he was originally cast to be the Blue Ranger, but chose to be the Black Ranger once Yost was brought on. Now his character being characterized as a "dancing martial artist" is a whole other story. This film is dog shit inside and out. You can do a serious Power Ranger story, but this sure as hell ain't it. Retard that wrote this ended up writing for Mobius and it shows.

I was never a Power Rangers kid growing up. I've seen maybe a few episodes here and there, but it was never something that really pulled me in. That said, I randomly saw a trailer for this movie somewhere online or on the TV and, if I'm honest, I was on board as it gave me very strong vibes of Chronicle (one of my favorite found footage films of all time) mixed in with some MCU style action and humor and I was intrigued. When I finally watched it I actually kinda enjoyed it, most likely because I have no prior attachment nor knowledge of the franchise. I liked the darker and grittier tone it took (especially in the first half), the cast all suited the given roles well and had great chemistry with each other, the effects, lighting and cinematography were all pretty solid, even the goofier and more comedic bits didn't really annoy me, which is a rarety in big budget blockbusters. It might just be my lack of exposure talking, but, I didn't hate this movie.
Thr movie is what 11 year old me wanted in 1993 as I quickly realized what trash the show was. I actually liked Jason this time around, a character i couldn't stand in the OG show and this actor isnt a POS like Austin St John.

I saw this opening weekend, funny enough. It was myself and our group of wanna be film critics. We were the only ones in the theater. We went from hopeful to bored to just going all Riff Trax on this film.
I grew up with this series and have a soft spot of Super Sentai. I was hoping so much that they would bring the spirit of the original series to this. Hell, when we got the o.g. opening song being used for five seconds, we started contemplating about getting our money back. This was a disappointment of unfathomable levels.

Didn't watch that 2017 movie, never will, thank you for taking one for the team dude 🤔, TWICE!! Using a clip from THAT "godzilla" movie must have really hurt.
Yeah, Zyuranger is pretty goofy in its own way but it's thoroughly entertaining, and I like the characters a lot. Been intending to watch more sentai series, I've only seen random crossovers when other teams show up in Kamen Rider.

Eh, the very fact that they re-used old characters and enemies means it isn't it's own thing, it's very much a remake. I do think it SHOULD have been its own thing entirely. New characters, new villains, new zords, etc.

Everyone having a sword was dumb, the zords looked gross and the megazord was disappointing. We just see them fall in a volcano and the megazord comes out. No cool transformation. They wanted 6 movies.....

I don’t think this movie deserved to fail at all. I loved it. The only gripes I had with it were it had too many dumb jokes, too many pop culture songs instead of a proper soundtrack and they spent too much time on the breakfast club part of the movie and not enough on the power rangers part of the movie. I’m sure a sequel would have fixed at least one of those issues

This movie in no way shape or form killed the franchise. It was a dud, but so was Turbo theatrically nearly 30 years ago and that didn’t kill it either. Power Rangers has been on a shoe string budget running continously for 30 years, something almost no comparable franchise had done. Having a few years of hiatus is far from being dead. Hell, they could take a decade off and still have a more consistent release history than He-Man, Transformers, and G I Joe lol

I agree the writing was awful. the designs were lazy. the hype did not live up to expectations. even with the Tommy tease at the end, nothing could save it. give it 10 years and try again.

I'll be honest, once you see canadian actors in a big budget movie, chances are that it's going to flop. Not knocking canadian actors, but it's just something I've noticed over the years. The time a production that involves canadian talent kinda succeeds is when it's a series, and even those are kinda of iffy.

This movie had some good ideas and a really great cast. Unfortunately, the movie was boring as hell, it had many, many terrible jokes that were just embarrassing. The joke at the beginning with the "cow" that the guy stole "milk" from really gets on my nerves. I actually paused the movie when I was streaming it and watched it again a whole week later. At no point did I really get a "Power Rangers" feeling from this movie. What annoyed me the most was that this movie tried too hard to be serious and was more of a modern version of the Breakfast Club. Of course Breakfast Club is a good movie. And yes movies like Schindler's List or Indiana Jones, not to mention Spartacus, Full Metal Jacket or Inception are good movies, but they can't be compared to Power Rangers and I don't want to see a Power Rangers version of these movies.
I actually think that's a shame because the movie really could have been something. Above all, it could have offered a modern audience the wonderful genius of the Power Rangers franchise, but instead it was lame, non wholesome, nothing whole - in Germany we say, "weder Fisch noch Fleisch".

Well, I have to give praise in two scenes. I thought it was brave that they made Billy Cranston autistic and I also thought it was brave to make the yellow ranger to a lesbian, that obviously excludes part of the target group and I think that's good, cuz [We don't want intolerant people anyway. In our group we].
The topic was handled far too poorly and not really developed. OK, you don't have to rub it in anyone's face, but it is what it is. Billy Cranston really does seem like a black version of Sheldon Cooper but it is not fully implemented. They could have just moved the story of the first three episodes to the 21st century and made some better fight scenes and nobody would have complained.
That's the thing that annoys me the most. The movie has way too few fights, as bad as this movie is, if half of them had been fight scenes then nobody would have complained and more people would have gone to the cinema because that's what the big screen is worth. I find that so sad, I'm still ashamed of it today. When I tell adults that I like Power Rangers but the series has so much more to offer than just 30 year old teenagers whit stupid puns, fighting rubber monsters in spandex.
And I don't understand why they're trying so hard to modernize the franchise. Just give us some young actors in colorful skintight suits with motorcycle helmets fighting rubber monsters and bad puns. Then add a few references to pop culture events, sports culture, cheerleading culture, makeup culture, nerd culture and maybe a few regional facts and the Power Rangers film is complete. And even if it wasn't the best film of all time, Nobody expects EVERY film to be on the same level, like Harry Potter Blade Region for Dream Spartacus, Dawn of the Dead, Avatar, the Marvel movies, The Exorcist, Goodfellas Titanic, Lord of the Rings, The Jungle Book, Gone with the Wind, Star Wars, Deadpool, The Lion King, Black Panther, Frozen. Beauty and the Beast. Simple example, I love spaghetti and I love muffins. If someone made muffins in spaghetti or spaghetti out of muffins, then I would complain because it just doesn't go together.

This movie looks soooooo boring! We barely saw the Power rangers in their suits, Rita was stupid instead of funny, the music was lame, the Mega-zord is ugly. It's not as bad as Fan4stic with all the talking in dark rooms and ONE action scene but not a good film. If i would saw it, i would give Power rangers 2017 a 4/10 😐

It's a childrens show for children. It appeals to children. The target audience. Is not meant to be analyzed as if it's some monumental work of art. It's "unhingedness" and "lol so random" humour is what 8-13 year olds want which.... is exactly who this movie is for. this is exactly the point. It's not for former 40 year old fans. It's literally a vehicle to sell toys to kids if there happens to be a storyline then it's doing about as well as any other power Rangers produced before it
Billy is not only the best part of the movie but he's the only positive autism representation in film. I'm sad we didn't get a sequel since we didn't get more billy

I can explain the race swapping. They didn't want the black guy as the black ranger. That's all there's to it. To be fair, the original zack and trini didn't like being the black and yellow rangers just because they were black and asian.

The current crop of writers in Hollywood seem to think for characters to be "interesting" they have to have questionable morals. Even after they've morphed that doesn't change, and Kimberly comes across particularly petty and bitter.
That has been a long confirmed myth. Walter Jones stated himself during a con that he was originally cast to be the Blue Ranger, but chose to be the Black Ranger once Yost was brought on. Now his character being characterized as a "dancing martial artist" is a whole other story.

I was never a Power Rangers kid growing up. I've seen maybe a few episodes here and there, but it was never something that really pulled me in. That said, I randomly saw a trailer for this movie somewhere online or on the TV and, if I'm honest, I was on board as it gave me very strong vibes of Chronicle (one of my favorite found footage films of all time) mixed in with some MCU style action and humor and I was intrigued. When I finally watched it I actually kinda enjoyed it, most likely because I have no prior attachment nor knowledge of the franchise. I liked the darker and grittier tone it took (especially in the first half), the cast all suited the given roles well and had great chemistry with each other, the effects, lighting and cinematography were all pretty solid, even the goofier and more comedic bits didn't really annoy me, which is a rarety in big budget blockbusters. It might just be my lack of exposure talking, but, I didn't hate this movie.
