I only just now had the chance to sit down and watch your re-review of the film, and it pretty much sums up a lot of what I felt about it from the very beginning. As at least one other person commented, I thought your idea of using flashbacks to tell RE1’s story, rather than having the events of both RE1 and RE2 taking place on the same night, would have worked far better. I still think making an RE1 movie first would be better, because otherwise, those flashback scenes would add to the RE2 movie’s budget, plus require more time for the audiences to digest them (if they involve RE1’s unique monsters/lore) on top of digesting the RE2 film’s plot as it unfolds. Still, I will reiterate that your hypothetical approach is at least ten times better and still allow for a proper RE1 film to be made at some point.

This is absolutely the worst Resident Evil movie, because all its references and ties to the games are insultingly superficial as fuck. At least the Anderson movies were so detached from the games, that any reference made you could just roll your eyes at. Here however, the characters and events don’t resemble their games’ counterparts in the slightest but Johannes tries to mask this by using familiar settings and landmarks in attempt to fool the audience into thinking it’s a faithful adaptation. It’s truly fucking pathetic.
I heard a rumor that the reason we don't get accurate Resident Evil adaptations is because Capcom wants adaptations to be different in order to encourage people to buy the games to know the story.
Adding to what I just stated in my previous comment, a person could practically make a tier list of all the RE source material this adaptation utterly wastes. For some examples off the top of my head below… 1.) Marvin Branagh being left out, while having Chief Irons be almost nothing like his game counterpart and play a role obviously more suited for Marvin. 2.) Leon… just Leon. 3.) The only Licker in the entire movie (plus only medium-sized mutant in the entire movie) just being used to kill off Chief Irons and then serving as fodder for Lisa Trevor. 4.) Lisa Trevor herself, including the potential for her to play a new role by being connected to the orphanage and attempting to help Claire and Leon. 5.) The Arklay Mansion as a setting. 6.) The relationship between Claire and Sherry. 7.) The Tyrants, which were the whole point of the T-Virus in the first place. 8.) Only a single zombie dog being used for one brief scene in a parking garage, when they had an opportunity to recreate RE1’s iconic scene with the Cerberus dogs chasing Alpha Team into the mansion. 9.) All of Jill’s last escape during the events of RE3. 10.) The concept art for this movie, portraying a potential Hunter, Crimson Head, Pale Head, and Giant Spider. 11.) Giant mutant animals like Neptune and/or Yawn. 12.) Bravo Team. 13.) Barry and Wesker. 14.) Leon’s relationship with Ada. 15.) William Birkin’s five forms. 16.) Annette Birkin. 17.) Rebecca Chambers and the potential for an RE0 movie. 18.) Chris and Claire’s likable relationship. 19.) The Keeper’s Diary story and its “Itchy, tasty” payoff. 20.) Wesker and Birkin’s history.
The live action action trailer for the PS4 Resident Evil 2 game captured the looks of the game quite nicely. Hollywood producers and filmmakers always think they can do better than the source material. It's the reason we get Rings of Power and the Halo series.
Claire and Lisa's friendship was a red flag already; i got to the diner scene and the characterization of both Leon and Jill made me turn it right tf off. Never went back to it bruv.....so disappointing smh.
the fact that they combined RE 1&2 into a single story is so bad there was enough material to make them their own movie the photos of production had me excited but was let down
The characters were spot on and tone was great. I didnt like how they mixed wesker with Barry Burton, and Leon with Carlos olivara and making him stupid, making wesker a chump, and Chris pathetic by not listening to his sister. I see this theme in everything. Make the guys stupid, elevate the ladies when it should be balanced.
Remember, RE fans: *Constantin Film* & *Screen Gems* are still the right-holders of Capcom's IP to make its adaptation(s). If you look closely on the studios' track records and based on _all_ of the previous on-screen adaptations for the past 20 yrs, you already noticed that they're very terrible in handling the source material.
My opinion now is the same as my first watch, it's the crappy iteration we should have first gotten in the late 90s/early 2000s. Ngl, still prefer it over the Anderson franchise. I'm not sure the Capcom animated films have ever even gotten it right.
@@sevartt9046 yup, but at least those aren't marketed as true(or truer) to the games. And the character assassination committed here is worse than what Anderson did in all his movies combined.
Ehh that script was pretty terrible too, with major changes to characters. The only thing it had going for it was that it was set in the Spencer mansion and featured so many monsters.
It's definitely not a very good movie, but there is a good movie in there somewhere. Conceptually, it's not a terrible idea, and it does have some genuinely good sequences, but a few major creative decisions really hold it back from being unapologstically good. I think the problem with adapting Resident Evil to movies is that the gake series is kind of a parody of B-horror movies that's good enough to actually be scary. By taking it back to film, the vest you can hope for is trying to make a good B-horror movie, but what you get is kind of a copy of a copy.
At this point bring back the Paul and Milla movies at least they where interestingly fun but in all fairness welcome to raccoon city had some cool shots from the movie the only part I praise is the zombie part in the mansion cause they where scary!!
@BaffledBuffoon same bro I really wish we could get a movie just solely based on the first game with the main characters(sure they can throw in an Ada Wong appearance) they would make a killing I'm still waiting on the next "BIG" zombie movie nothing topped dawn of the dead in my book
11:54 The screen may be a bit blurry, but I can immediately see that this is not Leon's handgun. He used a VP70 during the events of RE2. Small nitpick aside, this whole thing just sounds like a train wreck of fever dreams. It's one thing to try experimenting with the flow of events, but outright character assassinating key individuals is not a sign of the creators being fans at all nor for fans. Lisa Trevor popping up for no good reason is like all the other bad RE movies having the RE5 Executioner majini show up in the United States when it's an African enemy. She's just a walking RE1 Remake reference at this point, and she was part of that game that I disliked alongside Crimson Heads for most unnecessary and unfun additions to the Remake. Nostalgia bait film with very poor usage of the nostalgia material. That's all it can ever hope of being called in terms of quality.
I’m a big resident evil fan and I’ll be honest I liked it. It’s not the best but certainly not the worst movie I’ve ever seen. It was a fun take on it and really stuck to the games I will give them credit for that.
I was working at a movie theater when this movie came out, it was also around the time that I was slowly getting into the resident franchise. I was somewhat excited just to see if they recreate anything well. The movie was super ass with a side of shit. Only things I can give it. Is the film has a few well executed sequences, recreation of sets and atmosphere, and it at least attempted going close to the source material. Otherwise everything else is just a baffling decision and feels so fan film.
see the Anderson movies got a lot of flack for them using very little of the original source material but at least they were a hella lot of fun, the action sets were entertaining and Alice, Jill, and Rain were all badasses. Also the first movie was actually good as a standalone film meanwhile Welcome to Raccoon City butchered everything I loved about the games while still making a messy bland movie
Glad you liked it! What was your thoughts on the last part of the movie? I've seen pics of the Offspring and... ehhh... looks kinda dumb. Does it look better in motion?
@@BaffledBuffoon No. The weird offspring thing was crap. Like the weird thing in resurrection. Compared to the last horrible 3 alien flicks, it's almost a masterpiece.
Ah, damn. Was hoping it was scarier in context haha, I'm shocked that they'd take ideas from Resurrection. Glad you enjoyed it though! Red Letter Media gave the first part of it high praise, then said it fell off a cliff after a certain point
I'm still doubling down 😅. I love the film and still hold out hope that we one day get the director's cut. It's got problems, but I still enjoyed so many aspects of it. Johannes Roberts was aping John Carpenter and he seems to be able to do that pretty well. I'm not expecting it to be an FMV reel of the games and I appreciate some differences that they made. I think I'm the only person that has it both on DVD and Blu-ray.
I would've bought the blu-ray if there were any detailed making-of featurettes or a really in-depth director's commentary, genuinely intrigued to learn more about the production of it. But my rewatch was a miserable experience, came out of it far less favorable to the movie 😂
It takes concerted effort to make something that's arguably more offensive than Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil Movies, but atleast he got casting the main characters down....the few he included anyway.
I still liked the first third of the movie. The atmosphere and build up was well done and i liked the interactions of the STARS members outside the job. The script was bad, the low budget made Raccoon feel like a ghost town with only 6-7 cops and overall things go south rather quickly as soon as the action starts. Also, I liked Leon being an idiot and of course Chief Irons was the best character of the whole movie.
Whoever wrote this screenplay had to have noticed there was too much source material for one movie. Too many locations and too many characters. A big swing and a miss.
2:36 I genuinely don't understand your point here. Raccoon City was always portrayed in the games as being a major city. It literally has a subway system.
The intro to the original RE2 refers to Raccoon City as a suburb, which by definition is not a big city. It was retconned to be bigger as the series went on.
I thought it was the best, but still lacked alot. I think the way films should do it is rxplain to us even if we are fans like weve never played the games. First example the licker just shows up then gone, i am waiting for them to explain what it is as the characters would be doing, also skipping the Tyrant, Nemesis, and no cool kill scene for William Burkins is a shame.
They took a big shit in all the characters in the movie, but if I have to say one, and there was only one good thing that can be said of the movie... they at least understand the suspense atmosphere and keep a somewhat horror element on the movie at least until the beggining of the third act, if only the characters where respected and the story wasn´t all over the place.
Oh, God... I did want to watch this movie sometime ago and now glad that never actually did it. 😅 I'm played almost all parts of RE games up to 6 and revelation 2. Especially my favorites first original three games on PSX. So I really don't understand why here they are keep names of iconic characters and completely changed their looks and personalities. It's just awful. If you want to make your own version of story, then just change names too. Like Anderson did in his first movie. And his second movie exactly about Raccoon city is not really bad. I mean atmosphere of city during zombie invasion pretty much accurate. Some resemblance with game are there too. Jill amazingly portrayed by Sienna Gillory(Her brainwashed version in later movie too❤). Nemesis recognizable. I mean there's nothing that can really disgust fans of RE. Kinda feels like parallel world story Marvel's type. It's not Ideal, but at least somewhat entertaining. Just like author of video says. But here is we see a fanfic of the worst kind, where from OG characters stays only their names. I really doubt that I will ever try to watch it. 😅
I definitely wouldn't recommend it, haha. But yeah, drives me crazy when they basically change everything about a character except the name. Just tell a story about new characters at that point.
Man this movie maiesbje want to kick the shit out of the director, plus why is Jill interracial? Is that the directors trying to be edgy and show theyre cool with the young crowd?
This isn’t the worst RE movie, as many caveats as it has it was nice finally seeing the mansion, the R.P.D. And the G-Virus on screen, I’ll take that over OC fanfiction Alice ANY day
I've heard that the first Resident Evil movie was written the way it was just in case it wasn't picked up as Resident Evil. That way the script could still be used for another movie. That explains why there is very little Resident Evil in "Resident Evil".
Yeah this one was pretty bad. They had a great opportunity but absolutely shit the bed. Even the Anderson movies were fun to watch even while also being bad
This isn’t the worst Resident Evil movie, IMO. I prefer this over the Anderson films which were basically just a showcase for how hot and badass the director’s wife was. In regards to this movie, they should’ve tried to split the movie into two parts instead of cramming it altogether.
I thought it was better than the other RE movies but that’s not saying much. They really screwed up Leon, though. They made him such an incompetent buffoon.
This is what happens when wokeness ruins peoples favorites robby as Chris was the only character that looks like he should but you got a tall good wesker a Spanish Leon and a black Jill with wild long hair like wtf I never watched this movie cause I'm only gonna watch it when it becomes free on Hulu or Netflix or something other than that I'm a huge fan of the game and didn't want to see this flopfest

For some examples off the top of my head below…
1.) Marvin Branagh being left out, while having Chief Irons be almost nothing like his game counterpart and play a role obviously more suited for Marvin.
Never went back to it bruv.....so disappointing smh.
til the guy who plays wesker in this was in umbrella academy, what a twist
I'll never forget how hard they dropped the ball on Leon's casting. Wesker and Jill's too.
It boggles the mind
the fact that they combined RE 1&2 into a single story is so bad there was enough material to make them their own movie the photos of production had me excited but was let down
Like scorepn said they should have titled this references evil, this "movie" was just made to keep the rights
Yup, WTRC is the RE equivalent of Fant4stic 😅
The characters were spot on and tone was great. I didnt like how they mixed wesker with Barry Burton, and Leon with Carlos olivara and making him stupid, making wesker a chump, and Chris pathetic by not listening to his sister. I see this theme in everything. Make the guys stupid, elevate the ladies when it should be balanced.
The fact Wesker looked exactly like Chris should really annoyed me 🤣
You saved me watching the movie. 😂
Remember, RE fans:
*Constantin Film* & *Screen Gems* are still the right-holders of Capcom's IP to make its adaptation(s).
I'm not sure the Capcom animated films have ever even gotten it right.
utter abomination of a movie. the Anderson movies broke my heart. This crushed my spirit.
The director is a fan, a fan of Claire Redfield. That's why he butchered every other character.
Yeah, maybe that's it. Even she was ruined by being turned into a bitter hardass, but you're right, she does turn out to be right about everything
Sound like what Paul WS Anderson did to every Resident Evil character in favor of Alice.
@@sevartt9046 yup, but at least those aren't marketed as true(or truer) to the games. And the character assassination committed here is worse than what Anderson did in all his movies combined.
Just give George A Rameros Resident Evil the green light for fuck sakes!
Ehh that script was pretty terrible too, with major changes to characters. The only thing it had going for it was that it was set in the Spencer mansion and featured so many monsters.
@@BaffledBuffoonI second this. Read the script a few years ago. It wasn't good.
What happened to Chris and Claire’s relationship in death island????
Your back on resident evil nice
When the mood strikes me, yeah
Leon became the best next to Chris. What was he supposed to be a goofy clueless cop his entire arc?
It's definitely not a very good movie, but there is a good movie in there somewhere. Conceptually, it's not a terrible idea, and it does have some genuinely good sequences, but a few major creative decisions really hold it back from being unapologstically good. I think the problem with adapting Resident Evil to movies is that the gake series is kind of a parody of B-horror movies that's good enough to actually be scary. By taking it back to film, the vest you can hope for is trying to make a good B-horror movie, but what you get is kind of a copy of a copy.
Live lance heaven and death scythe? Based
Good eye!
itchy tasty
Of they had the budget to split the stories into two movies I believe it would have had a chance
I quite like the hardcore and sarcastic Leon in Resevil 4. It's a reasonable character progression from the idealistic and naive Resevil 2 Leon.
At this point bring back the Paul and Milla movies at least they where interestingly fun but in all fairness welcome to raccoon city had some cool shots from the movie the only part I praise is the zombie part in the mansion cause they where scary!!
Yeah, the zombie scenes in the mansion are my favorite bits by far.
@BaffledBuffoon same bro I really wish we could get a movie just solely based on the first game with the main characters(sure they can throw in an Ada Wong appearance) they would make a killing I'm still waiting on the next "BIG" zombie movie nothing topped dawn of the dead in my book
You know, a shame for this too is that Robbie Amell is actually a decent actor and he got wasted on this film
Yeah... he's been wasted in a lot of things, like that terrible X-Files revival.
@@BaffledBuffoon oh god. I didn't even know they revived that. WHY
Exactly... he was the perfect fit for Firestorm... but his character got killed off...
The worst part is "Leon" being treated as an absolute laughing stock by everyone.
@@amadeusagripino6862 Utterly shameless at it too.
…
secretly?
I’m a big resident evil fan and I’ll be honest I liked it. It’s not the best but certainly not the worst movie I’ve ever seen. It was a fun take on it and really stuck to the games I will give them credit for that.
The best Resident Evil movie will always be the 1996 PS1 game intro.
Ha! Love your phrasing 😆 Agreed, watching it this time was a miserable experience
see the Anderson movies got a lot of flack for them using very little of the original source material but at least they were a hella lot of fun, the action sets were entertaining and Alice, Jill, and Rain were all badasses. Also the first movie was actually good as a standalone film meanwhile Welcome to Raccoon City butchered everything I loved about the games while still making a messy bland movie
Ehh this movie is a guilty pleasure. I get nostalgia bombed everytime I watch it.
Better than Milla Jovovich series. 👍
No. Forget it.
Yeahhh 😆
Hope you're doing well 👍
@@BaffledBuffoon Not bad, dude. Saw Deadpool & Wolverine. Alien Romulus as well. An alien movie that wasn't sh1t? Maybe there is hope for the future.
Not a secret. Made worse by all the promotional stuff about how accurate it would be.
@@BaffledBuffoon The Blu-Ray had things like mini posters, but the content on the disc is the same, unfortunately.
Yeah, I figured as much since special features weren't advertised on store pages. Thanks for the confirmation though!
I’m not a huge fan of this movie but it’s better than Retribution, the Final Chapter, Infinite Darkness and the Netflix series.
Probably one of the rare ones that loved it. Hey, nothing wrong with that, though
No secret about it.
It takes concerted effort to make something that's arguably more offensive than Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil Movies, but atleast he got casting the main characters down....the few he included anyway.
i feel the other ones with milla are just at bad. i hated how they made leon out to be in the movie and didn’t care for the casting for jill.
It never held up lol
As a fan of leon WHY!!! bro wasnt even Caucasian. We wanted leon and got leo
Dude is white he just doesn’t have blonde hair😂😂😂😂
2:36 I genuinely don't understand your point here. Raccoon City was always portrayed in the games as being a major city. It literally has a subway system.
The intro to the original RE2 refers to Raccoon City as a suburb, which by definition is not a big city. It was retconned to be bigger as the series went on.
@@Bean-hjkiuerno,bit doesn't. Retcon doesn't make it correct
I'm played almost all parts of RE games up to 6 and revelation 2.
Is that the directors trying to be edgy and show theyre cool with the young crowd?
well imo Jill being interracial wasn't really the problem, it's that everything about her as a person in this film was completely different lol
@@drewm.2790 I'm not saying it Is the problem but it is part of the problem. It's just as fucking stupid as turning Wesker black smfh.
They took many liberties and changed things from the game, but I enjoyed this film. Can't stand the first lot of live action films.
How ever wrote this movie was on 🍁🍄
Yeah this one was pretty bad. They had a great opportunity but absolutely shit the bed. Even the Anderson movies were fun to watch even while also being bad
Yep cash crab
I saw it opening night and hated it with a passion
No, not even close...
There are like five more movies that are far worse than this.
Heard they are making a another one of these pieces of crap.
And it's rumored that it's going to be based off of Resident Evil 4 I swear if they get the same actor to play Leon it's going to be a flop
Supposedly based on Zero. Would like to think it's not happening, but we know Constantin are gonna crank one out sooner or later to keep the rights.
I just didn't like the ending. I enjoyed it overall.
The movie sucked but it did have good scenes.. when they went to the Spencer Mansion and when lisa Trevor comes out
I did like a couple of the sets, like parts of the mansion.
@@BaffledBuffoon the way Leon got disrespected pissed me off 🚩
Same here!
This movie was pretty bad lol if they would have just made it a zombie movie it could have been better without the Resident Evil title
This movie is great
What'd you like about it?
Better than anything Paul put out
This movie is worse than cancer. All kinds
No Barry Burton. Total BS.
Eh, I'm glad he wasn't around to be made unrecognizable. They would've found a way to ruin him
This is by far, the worst Resident Evil movie. More so because of what they did to our favorite heros, and the POS story writing and dialogue.
Yeah, didn't enjoy this rewatch at all. What would you say is the worst part?
Nope. It still sucks.
Agreed 😆
This isn’t the worst Resident Evil movie, IMO. I prefer this over the Anderson films which were basically just a showcase for how hot and badass the director’s wife was. In regards to this movie, they should’ve tried to split the movie into two parts instead of cramming it altogether.
There are much, much worse.
It’s so bad
I thought it was better than the other RE movies but that’s not saying much. They really screwed up Leon, though. They made him such an incompetent buffoon.
How dare you, he *wishes* he could be on the same level as a buffoon 😆
But yeah, such a weird move to write Leon that way.
This movie was not better than resident evil apocalypse
@@GENUINEKAI apocalypse was far and away the worst of those movies it’s not even close. You are mistaken, sir.
@@Spork718 apocalypse is def way more fun than that last movie. Way more action. More chaos in racoon city
@@Bean-hjkiuerwrong
Def. Not worth the time
This is what happens when wokeness ruins peoples favorites robby as Chris was the only character that looks like he should but you got a tall good wesker a Spanish Leon and a black Jill with wild long hair like wtf I never watched this movie cause I'm only gonna watch it when it becomes free on Hulu or Netflix or something other than that I'm a huge fan of the game and didn't want to see this flopfest
At what really gets me is that the director going to say he don't believe in getting actors that look similar to the characters he said he wants characters to embody the personality none of the characters did and Leon was the worst one
Hardly any characters are recognizable in any way, it's crazy.
@@Bean-hjkiuer Haven't you heard? "Woke" is when not white or woman now.
