The vandalism and criminality that happened to Mary's Place wasn't from hiker trashes, they were from local thieves. There were some screen shots of a truck on her property when the water tank was stolen. I have met Mary and she was very sweet and said she enjoy talking to hikers during PCT season.
Rest and feel better both of you. Watching you hike in the desert is unreal, you both have way more stamina than me, I could not handle the sand and hot sun and lack of trees. I am an easterner I need trees and green. God bless you both and keep on keepin on.
The trail can make you a germaphobe. It’s those funneling points like water spigots and hiker vortexes where most of the crud is transmitted. I got some gut crud accepting some spinach from an open bag from a girl in 19. Paid for that poor choice for two days. Hope you guys do the San Jac section. It’s challenging, but fantastic. 🍻
I think that is/was Mary's Oasis that is now closed. IIRC It was not closed due to hiker behavior, but because tweekers stoled the water tank twice. She was forced to close as she could not keep the local druggies from taking her property. ~S
Loved seeing the Horned Toad or Horney Toad...They were all around my home growing up in Texas. Haven't seen one in years. TCU mascot as well. They shoot blood out of their eyes as a self defense. Enjoying your journey...thanks for all your time to keep us in the loop.
Bummer to be sick anytime let alone while hiking. Hope it goes away quickly. I have a hard time going 19 miles when healthy let alone sick! Y'all rock!
Hope your recovery is going well, being sick on trail is no fun. The desert dryness lowers our ability to fend off rhinoviruses and other respiratory ailments while our systems adjust to the dryness. The vulnerability is generally short-lived, but the reactions can make us miserable. Also, the exposure to different pollens can cause annoying symptoms. I'm really enjoying your videos and that you show so much of your surroundings.
Wow, gorgeous views and those mountain range with the snow!!! Stunners!!! Thank you for showing so much of the trail, it's awe inspiring! Hoping y'all are feeling better quickly.
The lizard you saw was a “horned toad” or “horny toad.” It’s not a toad, but a real lizard, so scientists would like you to call them “horned lizards.” They’re pretty cool, I used to catch them when I was kid. The cactus is prickly pear.
Praying you 2 feel better soon. Disturbing how some people abuse other people's property when they have been kind enough to let outdoor recreationists use their property. Hike~~On~~>
Hope you're both feeling better now and had some good rest in Idyllwild. I told RR that I think you both got sick from over exposure to fresh air when you were Cowboy Camping! ;p ;p I was just up in that area on Saturday doing a section hike. When I was done I ended up taking three PCTers into Idyllwild. I'm betting I just missed you two on Saturday. Like I said I was in Idyllwild after my hike. Then I stopped at the PVC for a late lunch in the afternoon on my way home. Great humorous commentary today! Anyway, safe travels and happy trails to you both.
I'm so enjoying your videos! Takes me right back to that part of the trail. I know you are a pro hiker with the AT under your belt, but I felt that the warm sandy kind of walking takes a toll on the feet and the best thing for that is to take the shoes and socks off and air them out every several hours actually. Soak in water when you can. Eventually you can just hike on with no problems, but that beginning care of your feet seems crucial in the desert. Looking forward to the rest of your journey!
Take care. If you can hike 50% of your planned distance and feel okay at the end it's just a cold. If you could barely finish then it's a flu and take at least 2 zeros. My recommended prescription. Keep on.
Unsolicited advice 😄 : Siestas are a real thing when hiking in the Southwest. If you can schedule time midday, especially when it gets really hot, to rest and nap for a couple hours that's really going to make the day easier. On the hottest days (and it's always hotter when hiking in the sun with a pack) you might even think about an 11AM to 3PM rest near a water source and then hike into the evening when it's nice and cool. (In the actual desert to the east, that might even be 10-4.) Hike early, hike late, sleep at midday. - Of course it's worse when you have a cold and need to stay very hydrated. Take care of yourselves.
You’re 100% correct. I was talking with a friend about going to Mount Baldy. While I was typing been to San Gregorio it’s the big flat top kind of boring on top.
You must be easy enough to find, not too many folks have the orange tent! Sorry you're both not feeling well. Hopefully you haven’t now passed it on to Hammer! I wouldn't even call those people who got the oasis shut down "hikers". A true hiker wouldn't do stuff that would cause a closure like that. They're jerks, who obviously don't care about the trail or other people. And don't care about LNT, which includes don't do criminal things on private property! Sheesh!

I would be that dramatic we called every place in town!! 😂. When you feel bad that kind of disappointment just isn’t okay!

Aww..so sorry to hear that you and RR got sick. Hope the zeros helped you both get well needed rest to fight off the cold! Love your videos!

If you think your water is sketchy, filter it and boil it. Boiling is always the safest method, and it will usually never fail.
Hope you feel better dude!! Keep up the good work

Prayers for fast recovery of your sickness and hopefully your blister don't get worse. 😊
You two are troopers hiking through whatever you caught. Hope it cleared up soon.
Love the positive energy from both you and Roadrunner!

Horned toad not a lizard!
Fun fact: Roadrunners eat horned toads.
The dry So.Cal. air ,plus the plant allergens and the altitude will make you feel like you have a head cold. Most of the time it will pass

The pointy 1 is San Jacinto, to the left with a flatter top San Antonio/Baldy.
