I smoked for many years and paid the price. Parts of my gums, tongue, throat and jaw. This was back in Oct of 21. I'm now over a year clean but you know how that goes. If I have to do battle again so be it. Thanks for the info but a little too late for me. I'm glad your helping others. Thanks.

@Sunshine22896 Not too many. My ENT was smart he tought it was a cyst but did a biopsy and removed a lot of healthy tissue. It came back as stage 1 very early and hadn't spreader. The only issue I had was food getting in the hole. It took 6 weeks or more for the skin to grow back.
I had to eat soft foods and I lost 20 pounds but no severe issues I could talk and swallow.

It isn't a lot of pain with the surgery it's eating that is painful. You may have some itching. I didn't have to have radiation or chemo.

Thank you. One question re: HPV vaccination, Is it effective for someone in their late 60's who has already had treatment to remove HPV16 throat cancer and recovered? Would it be effective and how long would it last?

What causes extremely thick saliva and a coated tongue that will not go away, I can brush my teeth, tongue, and rinse my mouth 20 time and it is still there. My teeth are in terrible shape. My saliva is very thick, I have lot of bumps on the top of the very back of my tongue, so far back I can see something but cannot make out what is on the tongue. I just noticed some colored little bumps beneath my tongue. I am 82 years old. I just had my cataracs removed and I was going to get hearing aids and then go the dental school to have my rotting teeth removed. After seeing the little colored bumps beneath my tongue and something far back on the top of my tongue that I cannot identify, I am now concerned it is cancer. If I spit into a Kleenex my saliva can be pulled back and forth but remains doing that after a thorough brushing. I do grit my teeth a lot. My teeth are rotting. A couple of nights ago I tasted something salty that was followed my a sweetness. I checked it out because blood was coming from my gum beneath a bad tooth. It bled for a short time and stopped. I am pre diabetic and wondering if the sweetness in the blood is why the blood tasted sweet. I will be seeing someone very soon. Cataract surgery was done around a week ago. This looks really bad, doesn’t it?

Everyone quit smoking but cancer is on the rise. I'm still trying to figure that one out. Maybe all the nicotine was poisoning the cancer like chemo?

Back in 2005, I had this little white irritating lesion toward the back of the tongue.I am not a smoker. My doctor, doctors from 13:46 looked and didn't know what it was. A recommended ENT said it was nothing, but I persisted. I had some biopsies come back as leukoplakia and when I saw my dentist, he looked and turned ghostly white. He recommended a oral surgeon he knew. A year went by but I had biopsies done and this tumor was gray and squishy. Feb.14th 2008 I got the news. A portion of back tongue was removed. Then very aggressive radiation for months. Met my birth sisters that year and one had similar complaints-she put it off and it ravaged her mouth and jaw. She did not make it. Early detection is the only reason I am here blessed with 16 years of survival! I have jaw necrosis and my teeth that crumbled after initial treatment had crowns and they are now breaking off on a whim but I am alive!
