If you want my suggestion for a George Jones song to check out, "The Race is On" is a song about heartbreak, but it's also an uptempo song with some really fun plays on words. It's also a really hard song to sing, so you can see why George Jones is so highly regarded as a singer. Also has a really kicking tenor guitar solo.

Then after 20 years of divorce they found love again and got back together, he started going to church with my mother and God pulled him in, shortly after he got cancer and moved on, mom found him again a year later when she passed of cancer . This song was after Tammy Wynette divorced him, due to him being an alcoholic for the entirety of their marriage. Tammy, had songs such as D.I.V.O.R.C.E, I don't wanna play house, and Stand by your man. When she finally divorced him she wrote a beautiful song called Til I can make it on my own. If anyone is interested, there is a documentry series on Showtime about George Jones and Tammy Wynette. Episode 4 is called "the Grand Tour" it shows the incidents behind the song. It was Christmas and George got really blackout drunk. When he came home he went crazy, hit Tammy Wynette and then picked up a shot gun. He shot up the entire house. Several police cars had to come and stop the situaiton. Tammy and the kids had to run out of the house. So that is where the "tell you things that will chill you to the bone"

That show didn't look or sound good.
I also saw the trailer in which they showed a clip of the story about George throwing a chair out the window when he was having dinner with Tammy and her previous husband, because allegedly her previous husband was talking down to her, and George had an outburst and took Tammy and the kids.
But I saw the daughter of Tammy's previous husband saying that never happened, that Tammy just left him, and that she was angry and tired of seeing her dad's name getting dragged through the mud.

    • @Essex626

@@Gutslinger Thing about the factual details of their lives is... George and Tammy both are unreliable narrators in their autobiographies (which is pretty normal, people remember their lives differently than they happened). Some of those stories there's no proof one way or another what happened.
Tyler Mahan Coe talks about this problem on his podcast "Cocaine and Rhinestones." Season 2 is all about George Jones, and is worth a listen. Some people find Coe obnoxious, he's definitely opinionated, but he goes really deep in his analysis.

Keep in mind that these older songs are from a different era. Situation-ships weren't the norm. Divorce wasn't as easy nor common. Marriage was a stronger institution back then. Today, divorces are handed out like candy. Couples hook up and give no thought to marriage. So in the songs from those days, it was made to sound serious.

As much as I'd love it if it was a divorce, this song is actually about a woman dying in childbirth. She left EVERYTHING behind, if a woman was leaving/divorcing, she would take her clothes and personal affects with her.
"Although many listeners interpret the song as being sung by a man whose wife has divorced him, Tyler Mahan Coe concluded on his Cocaine and Rhinestones podcast that the singer's wife died in childbirth. "The wife did not leave her ring behind. She left all of her rings behind, along with every article of clothing she owned. In fact, she took none of her possessions - only the baby and his heart - because we have to leave this world the same way we enter it: with nothing but our body. And some people happen to leave while another body is growing inside of them. Since this is all very upsetting to think about, it’s not exactly a surprise how many fans try to cling to the divorce interpretation."[3]"

George Jones talked about his drinking problems and how his wife took his keys and wallet but forgot about the riding mower. So he rode his riding mower to the liquor store stopping along the way to mow yards for the money to Buy his Booze. All I can say is that is true dedication to self destructive behavior. The song is called Honky Tonk Song.

That's the great thing about a good country song, it tells a story about a situation but doesn't give all the details so it can affect more people. Maybe a guy's wife left and took the kid, maybe she and the kid were killed in an accident, maybe there's another way this song could be interpreted, but it's left to the listener to supply the details, and that can make it so much more personal.

Are you sure about that???? Frank Sinatra died in 1998 and George Jones died in 2013, so it's veery unlikely that happened.
Maybe it was the other way around? Or you got Frank Sinatra confused with someone else...

I'm a huge George Jones fan. And I've really enjoyed your reactions to George. But, when you can, you should check out Aaron Neville's cover of this song. Beautiful. And yes, according to what I've read from the writers of this song, it was about divorce. How about an uplifting song from George....."White Lightning".
