I went to see the movie last Yr and can tell you, I'm not 1 for showing emotion ever. But when Austin butler started this song and cut to elvis, I was bloody in tears. Thank god room was dark. For 20 mins after I left cinema I was so choked I couldn't speak. It took me back to the night news came in he died and this version was played on radio. I'm 65 and shocked that this man can still have that affect on someone who never met him. There was a day he wasn't out of the news or not in a paper in magazine. Yet ironically a lot of newspapers put his passing somewhere around page 5

He sang this and wrote this because the love of his life was gone from his life, he knew she would never come back, but he didn’t blame her because he knew in the end his own folly drove her away. This was his tragic, sorrowful “i’m sorry, this is what I wish could have been.” This was the song he chose to make his swansong.

He found places to take extra breaths, but he was phenomenal. I am so blessed to have seen him in concert. Thank you for doing all of these reactions to Elvis. You are adorable in the way you do these reactions. Really wish you could have been alive when Elvis was still alive. I don't think there will ever be another voice like his. RIP, Elvis.

The Righteous Brothers made this a hit in the 60s.
Elvis made it a hit again.
Fun Fact: Bill Medley and Elvis were great friends. In fact they alternated concerts in Vegas at The International for awhile.
Britt you should react to Medley's tribute song to Elvis, "Old Friend".

In 1955 Roy Hamilton was one of the first to record Unchained Melody. Hamilton was one of Elvis' great musical heroes and also a friend. Roy visited Elvis when he was recording in Memphis in 1969, shortly before he passed away.

First time I heard this song I was 7 years old. My dad was coming home from one of his usual Saturday morning golf games, and he stopped at the mall and got me two things. The first was a sugar cookie, which while I love thouse, I was more excited about what he handed me next. A cassette tape called “The Greatest Performances of Elvis Presley”. The tape had an assortment of tracks, both studio recordings and live performances, ranging from his start in 1953 to the end in 1977. I listened to that tape religiously be it in my room, riding with my mom in her car, or riding with my dad. I had that tape with me a lot. So this song played I don’t know how many times. I remembered even then feeling the power of that vocal. I had no idea then that it was near the end of his life, or what he was going through personally at that time. His manager was keeping him busy with countless gigs and Vegas appearances. He was a greedy money hungry man who took advantage of Elvis, taking 50% of Elvis’ earnings from his live performances in the later years and working him to the point of exhaustion. Elvis also never got over the heartbreak of losing his mother so young, and also his divorce from Priscilla. All of this, mixed with his inherited health issues effected him. People say that it was the pills and unhealthy life choices that killed him. But if you read the book “Destined to die Young” it really dives into the true cause of his death. He had a health condition that was hereditary from his mom’s side of the family. In fact, his mom also ha it. In his case, he had an enlarged heart and an impacted colon. The book shows that even if he’d never taken a pill in his life, he still would’ve most likely died young. As a 7 year old kid, I didn’t know any of this. I just knew I liked what I heard. Seeing it now, and knowing his story, it makes it even more powerful. I would describe it as beautifully heartbreaking. The reason is, because it’s heartbreaking that he was going through all of this at the time, but even in spite of it, when he sang, especially a song like this, he gave it all he had. His voice never wavered one bit. If you ever watch the Elvis movie from 2022, Austin Butler recreated this so beautifully. Worth a watch.

I was lucky to see him live at the Hilton in Las Vegas in 1975 when I was ten years old. The man was incredible. He had a stage entrance and presence like no one else. He owned the room the moment he stepped out on stage. When George Harrison saw Elvis live in 1972, he said it was like experiencing the god Vishnu descending from the skies. Yeah, it was just like that.

The entire song is just, I have no words. I love this man and I am truly obsessed. Thank you for the sweetest review.

I graduated from college in May of 1977 just before he died in August of that year. He was scheduled to perform in Hershey February of 1978. I was planning on sleeping outside for those tickets. I wouldn't have done that for any other performer. Even though this was one of his last performances and he wasn't well. However, his greatest gift, his voice, was still phenomenal. I would have still been THRILLED to be in this audience.

Best reaction Britt. I did see Elvis in 1976 and 77 in Chicago. In 77 it was the month of May, 3 months before he passed. I was 16 at the time and I liked him but after seeing him in person it was a experience that I won't forgot. Hs voice, charisma, and the connection he had with fans and people. You knew he was something god given but yet he never acted bigger or better than anyone. His appreciation for what the fans gave hime he gave back ten fold and more. Agree, no words can actually describe how much he had in talent, in his heart, and the ability to have you feel his soul when he sang. Truly unbelievable.

I lived next to Elvis's cousin when I was 4-5 years old, in our hometown of Tupelo, MS. Elvis would ride either his motorcycle or a convertible down from Memphis to visit his cousins. When I would see Elvis pull into Mr. Harold Ray's, I would run over because Elvis would always take me for a ride. I had no concept of fame, only that he was a sweet guy who indulged my love of fast vehicles. My mother was leary of motorcycles, and I can still hear Elvis saying, Mrs. Iris, I'll promise to protect her, but I can't tell her no. Elvis would always stop at a drive-in and buy me a milkshake and sing to me. Years later, after we had moved and Elvis's death, Mr. Harold Ray Presley was the sheriff of Lee County and killed in a shoot-out with a kidnapper. The kidnapper and victim were also killed. When I visit home, you still see both young and older Presley relatives. The Presley genes are strong, and some have a strong resemblance to Elvis, which throws visitors to his birthplace. Loved your reaction.
