Sean Doherty I had one or two but they were in the wrong subjects for my interests. I love science and am working towards because a biology teacher. If I had a great biology teacher like I did for history I probably would have became a doctor or something. My interest in science was very late because I had a great college biology professor.

Thank you for making this video!
I am a pre-service teacher in Alberta. I decided on education after working with children as a childcare provider and tutor for a few years. So, I finished my math degree and moved on into the Education Faculty at my friendly, neighbourhood, post-secondary institution!
My experiences working as a Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS) Leader, teaching freshman Logic definitely nailed in that I wanted to be a teacher, but it was also running a classroom in a manner eerily similar to a flipped classroom. Mind you, the lecture half of my business was the professor, but here I was, curating and recommending online videos to students, generating a tonne of different activities, challenges, and projects for the folks dropping into my sessions.
I dunno man, just wanted to gush. It's not infallible, but flipped classrooms are wild, awesome, powerful things. Let's rock folks! :D

I flipped my classroom a couple of years back. I don't flip it every single day, but a few times a week. Gives me way more time to work with kids who are struggling and to challenge the kids who are flying through the material

Hi Keith, great video. Thanks for doing this. I have a couple of questions.
    1. How long does an average video take you to produce from start to end?
    2. When do you do these? During your prep? On your own time?
    3. Do you do anything special for your audio?
    4. How do you plan an episode? Do you write a script, outline, or wing it?
    5. Are your students offered other modes to acquire the knowledge component or must they all watch your lectures?

Hey Rob, thanks... let me summarize my thoughts....
    1. An average video takes me probably between 3-6 hours to produce.
    2. I do them at home whenever I can find the time. I adjunct at the univ. and have a vid biz so time is always a challenge.
    3. I am terrible with audio but considering how close I am to the camera and the small room its not too much of a problem. Make sure your not too loud and risk audio clipping which will freak out your viewers. Go watch my (continued)

Excellent work, Keith. Your students are very fortunate to have such a committed, interesting and hard-working teacher. Hi! Very interesting. I will be flipping the classroom but in my case we're talking about senior managers and not young schools students. In our pre-learning we will use much more videos to get them better prepared for our very tough 2-5 day training sessions. We will also use them during the seminars to make better use of time. Thanks for the inspiration!!

    • @hiphughes

I've worked with Graduate students but never senior managers, sometimes young kids can be easier to flip with than adults. lol You would think it would be opposite, I'm glad my video was useful for your objectives. Good luck and let me know if you need any help. ~Keith aka HipHughes

Keith Hughes Hi! There are a couple of key issues when dealing with senior or executive managers/leaders. Time - Efficiency - Money. Keith we have a way in a platform based on moodle to record our own videos. It is called Big Blue Button and is easier to use for those who do not want to spend the time on RUclips. I set it for 15-20 min recording and about 5 minutes later it is ready to watch. I can record a bunch of mini lectures and use them to flip the classroom in a shorter time frame

Not too shabby. Work on the sound. I hate sound and usually get lucky.... Im getting a zoom mic to use and Ill just line it up in edit. Im not sure how your recording yours but it feels like work to hear you. Id also recommend coming in about 6 inches, you are losing about 15% of your screen on top. I think the visuals are great, very nice job layering stuff. The green screen is good quality too. Looks like someone is having fun!

To continue, having students struggle to understand difficult concepts without a person to ask for help is just ridiculous. Many students would simply choose to not watch the videos or try to understand the material, after which they will have no questions and most likely fail and assessments about the topics which were not covered in class! Personally, I find it impossible to sleep before 12am on most nights, and there is no way that I would be healthy if I had that much work to do.

The more I have been learning about this, the more I like it. I an a firm believer in hitting all Six levels of Blooms Taxonomy, even though the flavor of the month in education is to reduce or eliminate the first two levels. Can someone please help me with the following two concerns.
    1. What do I do with the kids who did not watch my videos the night before and come into class unprepared to do Blooms levels 3-6 b/c they did not solidify levels 1 & 2 at home.?
    2. What do I do for a student who does not have internet access, smart phone, or computer? Thank You.

Mike, I do morning review sessions, short concept lectures to cement the knowledge pieces. I also use www.educanon.com to get video engagement and data related to content. I also have an open lab twice a month for kids to catch up on video. Its a work in progress.... we are the pioneers, so I think we are figuring out some of it as we go along. Until we reach a true 1:1 environment and finally just eliminate the digital divide it will be a juggling act. I am over careful to make sure the knowledge piece is equitable.

    5. I show clips in class of other flipped videos as anticipatory but assign all of mine to my kids so we have a common knowledge foundation, plus I aligned mine to the Regents. Ive shown tons of others though-Hope this helps

And the teacher in the room would still facilitate the ideas of the video.. but to be standing in the room going over vocabulary is drone like teaching. Do discussion, high order q+a but save the baby food for vid review. And again, the goal is less work outside of the class. I rarely assign major homework, all they need to do is watch and take notes on a couple of vids a week which we still go over in class. #keepreconsidering

This is like all these modern theories. In fact, it is like all the old theories. It will work for a few kids, and not work for a lot more. For wealthy, elite, high end kids, it may help. But for average kids, or kids in poorer areas, I can see many pitfalls. Results will depend on the teacher, course, kids, & resources at hand... I predict a few spectacular failures, & a few successes. But much "middling". Not a "be all end all". Merely a switch as to who learns and who does not.

You have become my Flippin' Yoda! I teach in a suburb of Rochester. Go Bills!!! Teaching in a similar situation, I'm curious as to how you work with those students who cannot access your videos at home, whether they can't access the internet or they simply don't have a computer. How do you accommodate those students?

In the olden days, I burned DVDs, lol. My last two years in the class 75% of the kids had a phone and most others had access to a parents. Still I spaced my videos to about 1 a week and opened my room in the AM and lunch for kids who needed it. I think we are either expanding or contracting the digital divide. Ur a rocks throw, nice to know u jeff.

I was just about to ask the same question--especially with all of the flooding in Louisiana. While I think my kids will still think of a thousand and one excuses for not getting it done, I think I can get the students to understand (and agree) that they'd rather find a way to do the easy stuff for homework and the difficult stuff right there with me in class. And I think I can convince parents of that as well. Plus, it's reasonable to ask them once a week to get that internet/computer/video access.
      Thanks again for your help!

  • @hiphughes

I see the opposite. Rich kids already have resources which give them an advantage so to deprive others of valuable in-class time to analyze, create and be engaged is a crime. & if you are doing nothing about the digital divide then ur widening it, sure I burn 200 dvds a year but its worth it. And considering I teach those "average and poor kids I don't predict success, I know it. Many who are not teachers think they know what works, I wonder if they give advice about surgery and lawyer-ing too

But Jason, ideally this could make it easier for you. Most flipped vids are 15 minutes... right. so using that ur classtime could be spent doing what normally would be homework. Research, collaboration, projects. I agree, I think too much time is wasted on meaningless non relevant homework. This would be targeted and relevant and again to make the teacher in the class have more time to facilitate you with creating stuff.. like websites, videos, essays, comics. #reconsider

Well, those who are not actual teachers may have other valuable life experience. And we do pay the bills as taxpayers. I have not advised any surgeons, but had to kick ass in an emergency ward once, for a patient they were ignoring. Then another time, I discovered and helped solve 3 patient's problems for a local shrink. He was too close to the forest to see the trees.... And yes, I did give advice to a lawyer once, that he did use in his practice. Worse: I never billed him. Meh...

Students learn content at home? Really? For all six classes? They will solidify the knowledge base at home and be ready to go to DOK level 3 & 4? What is the avg. amount of homework a kid would have each day?

    • @hiphughes
      @hiphughes  10 лет назад

I highly doubt it would be for all content for all six classes. I think its best modified, so the most important content can be extended beyond the classroom. Homework should not require a teacher, thats when you need assistance.... story telling and lecturing can be done much easier this way.... and I still lecture... I still back it up.... whats the average amount they have now? I assign two videos a week. 30 minutes of video over 7 days. Should I rather give then an essay and eight worksheets? Everything in moderation.

    • @mikecruz8111
      @mikecruz8111 10 лет назад

Thank you for responding. 30 mins. of video is very reasonable. I am a believer in solidifying the knowledge base first, then go to the higher levels of Blooms/DOK/flavor of the month term. It seems like everyone wants to jump into DOK4 to put on a dog and pony show. Example: Can I lecture and stay in DOK 1 & 2 Mon. & Tues. Once my knowledge base is solid (check formative assessment data) go to DOK 3 & 4 Wed. Thurs. then test on Friday. Assessing all DOK levels? Could this still be a flipped classroom? P.S> We love your work! You do a great job!

(i.e. DOK4, Project based learning, pick your buzz word) and their students don't know what country Winston Churchill was from. Is there an anti-content movement going on?

Mike Cruz Mike, I think your plan is great and yes, it is technically flipping. I really believe as teachers we are the masters of our domain.... statistics should never replace judgement. And yes, I do believe there is an anti content movement going on, its called common core.

Thank You! I'm honored we share the same opinion. Keep fighting the good fight. You do a hell of a job. I just got rid of my textbooks and am trying to do everything online to engage the kids and get kids with attendance issues a way to still do the work and learn. My first RUclips video was a bit sloopy, but Im going to steal some of your ideas. Thank you for your time. - Cruz

It sure is! You have inspired me to attempt a black / white / green screen - I like what you said in this video, once you get hooked your technology will improve. I have found that to be true also!

As a stressed high school student, I find this repulsive. The idea of doing something like this is absolutely backwards. Yes I understand that the students have more in-class time to participate in question based work and teamwork, but do you really believe that kids these days have ANY time watch lectures at home??? WE DO NOT. The average teen needs over 9 hours of sleep to function properly during the day, and most of us only get about 5 a night. This is dealing with a non-flipped classroom.
