You know what's funny about Mr. Enter saying that every episode was written in just one go? Many of these episodes were either written or partly written by Cindy Marrow, who has also written episodes for My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. That means she put more effort into MLP than in Robotboy...
HeavyWeaponsPie Hello. It’s Lola Mbola from twitter. I run the parody account because I like Robotboy. ToonBoom is really fun, I use it fir some dance and walk prototype animations
I agree with you for the most part but I was legitimately caught off guard by the Protoboy episodes. They were actually really good and interesting. I especially enjoyed the one where Protoboy stole Robotboy’s body
I do like that Protoboy is a (mostly) serious character, it makes him and cool and enjoyable, as most other villains (with the occasional one off villain exception like Susie and Robotman (he did have funny moments when he was being a nuisance, but his evilness is played seriously) are usually comedic.
Robotboy always had problems that I could notice as a kid, and the worst part was that I enjoyed the show enough to want to see the show fix those problems as it progresses; which it never did.
No, it is animated in a software called ToonBoom, it’s been around since the early 90s, and shkows like Spongebob and the simpsons have used toonboom for a long time
Sooo....you had no thoughts on the villian, Enter? Not saying you had to go super in-depth, but you barely mentioned Kamikaze outside of his name (yet you ranted about Gus for half the review). You also BARELY talked about Robot Boy himself (ya know, the FRICKIN' title character). I'm not even a big fan of this show, but Enter, this review felt both RUSHED and too fixated on particular characters, instead of the whole.
@SL Dave I feel him talking about the issue with the main gimmick was good, but as you said spreading out the time to focus on more of the characters would have been an improvement, and it is fine to mention problems with reoccurring characters, but I feel like giving more time to the biggest issue of the show would help hammer in his point better and emphasize it.
For Mr.Enter to say that Guss is the worst child character ever is an over statement. Becuase we all know it is a matter of time before he finds somebody even worse than Guss. ...You just wait for it.
Hmm...I dont directly recall watching this show, but the designs and art feel so familiar? I think I recall an episode where they disguised the robot as a toy, but that might have been another show.
Not certain if that happened because ive never seen the show, but that's a very common trend in "not a human" characters, so I wouldn't doubt a show like this would join in
Fancy Snake I remember the episode where they slap a screen on robotboys head and use him as a tv but for some weird reason he imitates the characters shown on it as well. No way this could go wrong, right?
Oh come on, not my Robotboy! I know it wasn’t exactly the best show out there, it probably wasn’t even that good, but it still had SOME charm to it. At least 3/4 of the cast were pretty decent, and Ro himself is just a sweet little cinnamon roll. I felt like this show had potential if it was handled a bit better and it’s really sad that it never really had a chance to improve before being cancelled.
I agree. Also, Enter didn't even talk about such crucial aspects of the show as the main antagonist and his sidekick, which in my opinion, did give the show a lot of personality.
@@kooarchived I don't see how anyone with the same IQ as Rick and Morty, would enjoy that show. At least R&M make me laugh and not cringe! Even Robotboy had way less cringe than The Oblongs!
Mr Enter always nitpicks. Robotboy (as a show) actually looks better that Adveture Time imo. He always comes to cartoons with a prejudice so much that he can't admit good qualities of bad shows and bad qualities of good shows. Robotboy (as a show) looked really good.
I’m a sucker for the protective friend/sibling/parent/parental figure trope which this show has a lot of so I like it for that. My problem with it is how stagnant it feels. They keep telling us Robotboy is supposed to be learning how to be a real boy with Tommy but I never feel like he’s leaned anything. From first episode to last episode he’s exactly the same and that’s fine for an episodic show but then don’t keep reminding us that he’s supposed to be learning things because then I expect character development.
Yeah, usually, it's the crazy, high-end villains that help add some much needed laughs and personality to an otherwise unimpressive show! Other examples include Dr Robotnik in AoStH and Dedede in Kirby: Right Back at Ya!
"Non applicable" - oh that's savage. I was wondering why I clicked off that show yesterday when it was recommended now I know. Nostalgia couldn't even make it work.
I genuinely cringe when Mr enter says, "flash is used to animate complex shapes, not simple ones". First off, he has said this 5 years ago, when he had little to no drawing experience. Much less in flash. But now, 2019, he has actually started drawing, traditionally anyways, and has shown little to no experience using flash himself. 2. Where did he get that fact from? The shows I have seen using flash generally use geometric. (Exp. Foster's , mlp fim, and motorcity) these shows have geometric, simple character designs and have shown to work very well with the animation. Just watch any episode of motorcity to know what I am talking about. As for this show being animated in flash, I could not find any proof of this. Very little information has been released of this show through Wikipedia or any other site I went to. It looks more traditionally animated if anything. The movement look more smooth than shows like atomic betty and puffy ami yumi. Mr enter, if you're reading this I would love to see more sources sited in your descriptions to backup you claims. Thank you
1. This is a sort of red herring complaint because you can easily pick up this information second hand by talking to people who used Flash and he is correct. That being said Flash can animate simple geometric shapes as well as complex ones but for that reason it makes it preferable to use the complex characters if you can. It's like using a ten gallon container to carry 8 ounces of water, sure you can do that but it's kind of a waste of the tool. 2. Yes you're right, you can use Flash to animate simple shapes but all of the shows you just mentioned feature more complex character designs than Robot Boy especially Motorcity.
I remember the reason. It was to teach robot boy how to act more like a person and to adapt to the world more easily due to a frame of reference. He saw Tomy as a good, kind hearted boy that would take good care of him, like a little brother.
In England this show was always that filler show they had 50 reruns of on after 9 at night and before 6 in the morning, so yeah; this just reminds me of staying up late, but getting so bored by there being nothing but this on that I went to bed anyway...
I still remember this and I thought it was decent. This was also a co-production with the UK, so there were several British actors, one American actress (who voiced Robotboy, Lola and Debbie Turnbull), and one Irish actress (who voiced Tommy) voicing a mostly American cast of characters. Also, the late Eiji Kusuhara (the voice of Dr. Kamikaze) was also one of the announcers from "Banzai!", so it was a pleasure to hear his voice again.
Yeah. It's entirely digital ink and paint (aka traditional animation). But unfortunately, not as fluid as most hand drawn cartoons around the time. However, Digital eMation (who also worked on the animation for Oggy and the Cockroaches (season 3), OK KO, Billy and Mandy (last 3 seasons) and Evil Con Carne) gave the show some very fluid animation compare to all of them.
A logical explanation of why a robot wouldn't know it's own abilities: it's supposed to look and act just like a human, but you armed it so it can defend itself (see: Astroboy the movie)
I use to be obssessed with this show as a kid, alongside Camp Lazlo. 7:29 - 8:16 Actually, Robotboy was completely hand drawn. Phineas and Ferb was made in Toon Boom, a software similar to Flash.
The best thing I can remember from this show is all the times Robot Boy transformed. Say what you want about it, but every time he transformed the hype meter skyrocketed.
It's been a long time, Robotboy. I will accept your flaws that I have completely forgotten because like I said it's been a long time so I forgot pretty much everything about the show. But you (character not show) will always have a spot in my -long term memory- heart
You forgot to talk about how AWFUL Tommy's parents are. They belong at #1 on a Worst Animated Parents list. They are often flip-flopping between tolerable and so neglectful that I'm surprised Tommy isn't dead yet. They constantly ignore Tommy because he's not tough or strong, and favor their other son, Donnie, who is so aggressive that, once again, I'm surprised he hasn't killed Tommy yet. And he's come pretty close if I remember correctly. Half the time, they don't even care if Tommy gets killed. In the episode, 'Mancation,' Tommy's father drags him and his brother on a camp trip with literally NO supplies and doesn't seem too concerned when Tommy literally falls off a mountain. And the reason Tommy almost falls is because his father forced the boys to climb the mountain and Donnie SHOVES Tommy off the cliff their climbing after Tommy makes a smart alec comment. The mother is a bit more tolerable, but she won't win any mother of the year award either. In one episode, Tommy leaves the house without permission and she sends Donnie to fetch him, while giving him permission to use physical force. I'm sorry, but this couple just annoys me and I'm surprised their mistreatment isnt brought up ONCE in this review.
Duuuude! I love Robotboy as a kid. It did have its weak aspects, but I love the unique shapes and weapons. Never like Gus. Also.... hypospace police.. ayy!
"I was one of the only two people on Earth who had never actually watched the show before." I'm the other person who's never seen this show. I hadn't even heard of it until this video popped up in my recommend list.
"Why would you not program knowledge of a robot's abilities into the robot?" Wasn't there an episode of My Life as a Teenage Robot that showed that Jenny had to study her user's manual to know about everything that was built into her? I remember there was an episode where it's confirmed that her mental faculties, over four years, few from that of an infant to what they are in the series, and if her AI was a neural network, it would make sense. I know, two different episodes of Teenage Robot to explain, but still.
The one thing I remember about this Shia is that "not applicable's parents were oddly abusive. I mean the dad encouraged the punk rock kid to beat up the main charecter to "build character and in one episode he gave the brother a new computer even though Tommy is the tech genius... supposedly he is a prodigy and that is why he has the robot. I mean he is seen repairing robotboy a few times and once made a robot monkey so I assumed that was the reason.
Now as much as I love the Show. You have to understand that opinions are a thing. Nobody is saying that you must agree with them, only that you understand it. Also the show has flaws, but even so It’ll still hold a place in my heart.
I remember this show and, in hindsight, I think the reason they made it this way was because, really, it probably meant to appeal more to kids who watch anything
I used to watch this show on Cartoon Network and the one big ongoing trend I remember is that Robotboy is battery-powered and most of the time runs out of charge. It was so tiring that Gus even got cross at Tommy for not charging Robotboy up to full energy. Yeah, Tommy's bad at doing his job, isn't he?
tbh, i used to really like Robot Boy. But when i rewatched the show recently, it wasn't very good. Not terrible, but it has a lot of problems. Besides, there's always something that we loved as kids that we look back on it and realise that weren't that good.
this is not one of his best episodes. sure, the serie as a whole was not good, but pull out a basic 10-ish minute and not really do a complete rewiev for the whole serie is a bit much
@@adamdavis1648 As well as massively hypocritical, such as Growing Around. Complaining how something in a cartoon 'doesn't make sense' when they go about creating something that runs on just that, and expecting people to just accept it. Among other things.
Woah woah woah! You can't just throw Half-Life references like that! Except you can. Because you did. And I love Half Life references. So I don't care.
This show and Gadget Boy served as the basis for me and my friend riffing on shows back in primary school; Robot Boy during day time, Gadget Boy during night time. I remember the show not being good, but I also remember not thinking of it as abysmal - though only because I was used to awful episodic plots and truly idiotic characters at that point; Gus was just one of many to me.
Personally I'd consider this show one of the least bad atrocities. Robotboy is flawed and doesn't elevate itself to anything outside of a mediocre 'nothing else is on time-waster show' but it does have some merits. Some of the action scenes are done well with this art style and the 'Crying Time' episode was pretty good showing this show is capable of some emotion and even a little bit of subtlety. That's enough to make me wish they'd put a bit more care to this show. But to each his own.
I never really questioned this show when I first saw it since I was a dumb kid, and I really liked it back than. I have autism, so I was much dumber than most kids back then. Seeing all these details be re-introduced to me now, I can understand why one could have hated this show. Off topic, Flash can indeed look just about as good as 2d animation, since the only difference is that puppet animation is actually used more like a tool, rather than a medium. You can be lazy with anything handed to you, not just puppet animation.
this show really didn't handle friendships at all. also tommy's brother is a straight up sociopath since he actually tried to throw tommy into a woodchipper in one episode. siblings not getting along isnt something new, but that was straight up attempted murder.

Geez kinda wish you mentioned the villains, they are kinda funny and a nice antagonist for being some simple, especially the assistant.
Robotboy always had problems that I could notice as a kid, and the worst part was that I enjoyed the show enough to want to see the show fix those problems as it progresses; which it never did.
I don't think Robotboy was animated in Flash. I think it's just stiff hand drawn animation taking inspiration from UPA cartoons.

You also BARELY talked about Robot Boy himself (ya know, the FRICKIN' title character).
I'm not even a big fan of this show, but Enter, this review felt both RUSHED and too fixated on particular characters, instead of the whole.
Agreed, I do like Enter's reviews but he does tend to fixate on particular points, even insignificant ones, rather than the movie or show as a whole.
@SL Dave Thank you for the mature discussion.

Hmm...I dont directly recall watching this show, but the designs and art feel so familiar?
I think I recall an episode where they disguised the robot as a toy, but that might have been another show.
That happens. Idk why I remember it happening but that is one of the episodes.
Tommy could at least dress Robot Boy up as a green dog, or something.
Schwarzer Ritter GIR is amazing. He twerked at a cow.
Oh come on, not my Robotboy! I know it wasn’t exactly the best show out there, it probably wasn’t even that good, but it still had SOME charm to it.

That JonTron "What?" Was so unexpected, it made me laugh out loud for some reason!

Thank you
As an animator, you're required to swear by Blender, use only Blender, and never, EVER, *DUH,* say the tools are "too complicated".
I honestly adored this show and still do. I rewatched some episodes a few years ago and remembered loving it just the same.
I remember the reason. It was to teach robot boy how to act more like a person and to adapt to the world more easily due to a frame of reference. He saw Tomy as a good, kind hearted boy that would take good care of him, like a little brother.
@@thetwistedsamurai So true. I still love the show, even through jokes can be disgusting sometimes, I love Robotboy as a character
I actually like how this show looks
Rest in piece Eiji.
Opinion respected. But I agree it has its flaws. Although, the animation is actually pretty good.
it definitely isn't animated in flash.
