I now have telemetry on my cx-20,my macbook pro, my galaxy s2 and my galaxy s7 thanks to your video! ..And I got to hear an accent that made me homesick. LoL!
Great easy to follow video, will be installing ASAP.
When time permits, hope to see more. Congrats on the baby
+Ken “kenno17” stockton Thank you! Thanks for watching!
Completed my upgrade today and now have working telemetry now. I had upgraded to V.2.3.1 so had to upload a hex file to the FC. Can't wait to get out and try a mission!
+Donn Brown (Photodonn) Awesome! Enjoy!!
Great video. this is how DIY tutorial videos should be done!
+PABLO ARVELO Thanks!
Thanks for a great video. I have the Quanum Nova and was looking to add telemetry. Followed your video and successfully installed the system. Linked up to Mission Planner and responds just like your video. I had my RX and TX reversed and initially only had the single blinking light on the Air Module. The correction was simply to switch the RX and TX wire position and it was good to go. THANK YOU.
+Jim Magnuson Awesome! I'm happy to hear it worked out well for you
Remaining items arrive this week (incl Boscam FPV and coverleafs) hope to finish this weekend. I may need a little guidance/advice but I think I can get a decent result. Thanks again, great video
Hi
Good tip for drilling on smooth plastic to prevent drill 'skid' and wander. A very small pilot hole first, or a couple of pieces of masking tape in an ' X'.
(Just thinking of your lovely C20. lol)
Immensely helpful video. You saved me a lot of hours of trial and error, and probably form frying my board. Cheers1
Great video tdracing, just what I needed at this time. Recently purchased teh CX20, have added a Walkera 3G gimbal for my GoPro & have also bought an FPV rig, onboard telemetry was the only thing missing, appears to be a really easy install. Cant wait to get the 3DR gear & have this fully mission planner ready.
+Mark Webb Thank you! How do you like the Walkera gimbal? I have a cheap aluminum gimbal for it but was thinking about switching to the walkera to save weight.
IT is very stable and gives a great result even in gusty winds. I upgraded to 9450 props which I balanced by hand using a pencil, glass & a couple of nails in a board and was able to get min vibration. The Walkera gimbal needs abit of work to retrofit to the CX20, but there are a few video's upon that. Overall Im very happy with the configuration, just need longer langing gear to stop gimbal twitching prior to take off..
Thanks for the tutorial, I just started playing with the mission planner, this will be a great addition!
Very nice work.
Seems like when you had it open it would have been a good time to square up the APM FC module which appeared to be cocked at an angle.
+TheGusK Thanks! Yes it is rather crooked, I wanted to order some proper anti-vibration mounting tape before moving it. I plan on going back in and upgrading the GPS in the next week or so, hopefully the tape will be in by then.
+tdracing13 Hate to say it, but that is one ugly antenna cocked out the side like that. :)
+TheGusK lol, it looks a little better now that I'm using the bulkhead connector but it's definitely far from attractive. I actually just found a little 5cm 915mhz antenna that I'm going to test, hopefully it works well.
I'll be doing this next week. This will be very helpful. Thanks!
Excellent job!
Hi all, for some extra assistance....check your boards solder quality.... I spent DAYS trying to solve an issue with my CX-20 setting up my telemetry. I kept getting 'no heartbeat packets' and couldnt work out why. I swapped changed to multiple different firmwares, unplugged the GPS and other components, tested the power, used terminal to test the communication, etc etc etc i also swapped TX/RX for every change and tested them fully. Finally tested each port on the telem air unit and the APM and found that the APM had a bit of crap solder jumping the connection on the APM... well done who ever built it... thanks! anyway removed the jump and it now works perfectly. Just thought Id post my findings here.... anyone having the same problem... check your boards for solder quality and whether there are any shorts!!! thanks to tdracing13 for the video!!
Amazing Tutorial. Thanks!
+KTM Duke 125 Laranjinha (Linhos) Thank you! Thanks for watching!
Really good video! Be careful for static when handling mainboards.
+Keith Soderlund Thank you! Yes I'm a little more reckless than I should be when handling the main board, definitely not a great idea ;)
Right On! telemetry on point now! :)
Thanks for the informational video it really made setting up telemetry easy. Do you by chance have a video where you connect OSD to the telemetry? Thanks again for a great video.
Great Video, Thank.
+Severino Mastracci Thanks for watching!
thanks for sharing this!
+Badr ouali alami Your welcome, thanks for watching!
I wish you were bit more descriptive with the re-organizing the UART cable. it's really the most crucial part of the operation because you can fry the boards. I'm still not 100% on how it should be done.
+razorseal Theres a wiring diagram showing how the circuit should be wired in the video, is there any place in particular that you are having trouble with?
Thanks I have been looking everywhere for non rushed tutorial. just a quick question I see some people have the program on there Android, is the chip compatible on Android.
+Connor Roush Thanks for watching! I haven't tried to use it with Android yet but I believe the end that attaches to the quadcopter should be compatible with Droid Planner.
tdracing13. Nice video thanks for the info. Did you experience any problems with the GPS since you mounted the Telemetry near it.
+Skydive Driver Thanks! I haven't seen any issues with the GPS beyond the dropouts I have been experiencing since day 1 (bad GPS module). Either way the new GPS/compass combo will be mounted in the puck with shielding :)
Hi, thank you very much for the video, it really helps a lot.
I am planning to change my transmitter to futuba.
Do you have any video how to change the receiver? or do you have any suggestion for this.
Thanks.
Sengin
very usefull video, sir can you upload for the test flight with this modification.
thanks alot sir
+edi kristianto Thank you! I will be adding more videos shortly on the CX-20 that will show this modification in action. Thanks for watching!
Very informative. Thanks.
+Michael Reyes Thanks for watching!
+tdracing13 Hey, If I were to send you all my hardware including my quad and pay for shipping how much would you charge to do this mod for me?
Unfortunately my life is about to get real busy in the next few days (my wife is due with our first child any day now!) so I wouldn't be able to take on a project like this. I'm sorry:(
It's all good, tdracing13 . Thanks for responding.
Great video! I was able to install my telemetry on my Cx-20. one problem I'm encountering is that voltage is not showing in either MP or Tower app. any thoughts?
+bryanflores04 I'm happy the video was helpful! Unfortunately in order to add voltage you will have to install a battery module like this one www.ebay.com/itm/Best-APM2-5-2-2-6-Pixhawk-Power-Module-cable-V1-0-Output-BEC-3A-W-XT60-Plug-US-/141729072661?hash=item20ffb60615:g:rUIAAOSwPcVVtf22 . I have one but have not installed it yet as I am rebuilding the CX-20 over the winter. I will have some new videos coming up including installing an upgraded flight control board, FPV, and OSD
cool! I'll wait for it! Thanks again! :)
So I have to have an open source Cheerson for this to work?
can I connect a polarized antenna to the receiver on quadcopter?
Hey John The link you have posted on here is fine my mistake. Anyway I have installed the software followed all your instruction and I can't get mine to work, is there something in mission planner that might need changed.
excellent video, you just made upgrading my CX-20 a breeze. Thanks for the effort. I used an 1/8" pilot hole first and depth limiters on both bits, no risk of damage from drilling.Questions, Do I still need a minimOSD or equiv or is that built into Mission Planner? and, do you think clover leafantenna's are worth it?
+brobb64 Awsome! I'm happy it helped you, that's a great suggestion for drilling. If you want to have OSD on your FPV screen you would still need the minimOSD. As far as cloverleafs go they are definitely worth the money, 5.8ghz is very susceptible to multi-path interference.
Hi could you tell me where I could get the antenna extension from?
very helpfull... you should being teacher man... easy to understand bout youre speech...
+gembrot319 Thanks so much!
I have a CX-20, in mission planner it shows that it is upside down, i tried calibrating everything and it still doesn't work, and it doesnt want to unlock the motors, I calibrated the transmitter and it still doesnt want to unlock them. Could anyone help me please?
Thank you
Will the 3dR telemetry kit work with the factory apm? Thanks.
Hi tdracing13 I watched your video again, very informational. You mention about upgrading to a GPS combo. What GPS combo do you recommend? Also is there a way that I could make the ground side of the telemetry unit work with my FPV monitor instead of using a laptop. Thank you for your review it is very helpful.
+Skydive Driver Hi, thanks for the kind words. This is the GPS/compass unit I installed www.ebay.com/itm/UBLOX-NEO-6M-GPS-HMC5883L-Compass-Module-for-APM2-6-Flight-Controller-Multirotor-/231334797016?hash=item35dca0ded8:g:AysAAOSwQItUF-Wt . I did not buy it from this seller, unfortunately the person I bought it from no longer stocks this product. To get your data on the FPV monitor you could use and OSD setup to overlay the pertinent information over your flight video, I will actually be uploading a video covering OSD installation and setup in the somewhat near future.
tdracing13 Thank you for the come back. So OSD, this more involve by the minute. LOL. I will be waiting for your video.
Thanks again.
loads of thanks for the time sharing this info, i wanna ask; can the cx 20 get the follow me function.
also is it possible to bind another radio with it.
Yes. Download droidplanner to your phone or see instructions on youtube.
Sorry but I didn't read all of the comments and questions, I just don't have time lately but before I go any further could anyone tell me if there are iOS versions of software. Thanks
Question! Installed my 3DR telemetry unit (Air) and have the flashing blue & red LEDs but times out when trying to connect to MP. I even tried swapping the RX & TX wires and still nothing, I have installed a new APM V252 V5.0 FC and updated the firmware. What was the HEX firmware upgrade you were talking about?
+Donn Brown (Photodonn) Hi, check out this video ruclips.net/video/MbqfpGElSyI/видео.html . He covers the HEX file installation. I hope this helps
I just ordered 3dr Telemetry 433 mhz APM, APM2, APM 2.8 before do my research if this will work with my cheerson cx20 open version, Does anyone knows if it would work? thanks
can someone tell me what size drill bit to use?
Friend, I followed all your steps but when you connect the battery does not turn the telemetry only heats quickly and off.
What I can do?
Carlos M Castillo does the telemetry module heat up? The wires are definitely in the right places?
If you are put in correctly as your tutorial, the center's largest chip heats up, I have the same drone and buy the telemetry on ebay that I leave here the link below it.
www.ebay.com/itm/121905150283?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
good job
+Felipe Garcia Thanks!
wow 1 person didn't like the video, or did they wake up with piles ;)
I have bought one of these I have enjoyed it but it landed pretty hard did not break now I have no lock or unlock (red light) will not bind What will cause this and how can I repair it Thanks a bunch
+james west Is the red light on solid or flashing?
It was off I got it Back was worried Thanks
Rx to Tx, Tx to Rx?
why i lost "RNGFND" after upgrade firmware from bangs6996 video
+Dominiz X I'm not sure, I have not moved up to that firmware yet
hi - thx - one question - will this work with the Tower app?
yes
Hello I cx 20 Cherson which reach it reaches high it original
How much range do you get on the telemetry?
Michael VanFarowe unfortunately I don't have a proper range for you as my flight controller failed shortly after filming this video. I have a new board ready to put in but my time in the shop has been limited lately
There is an updated version for APM mode on the site.
APM Planner 2.0 version: 2.0.18 date:July 25, 2015.
Has anyone used this with this particular telemetry kit and was it successful?
ardupilot.com/downloads/?did=91
Can this be used with the Tower app?
+D Pulley To be honest I am not sure, I have only used it with mission planner.
D Pulley yes
congrats on the new baby your life will change lol
For anyone who wants to use 3.2.1 (recommended) and telemetry, here is the custom firmware to make that happen. I, along with many other guys, use this firmware successfully. Maybe tdragracing13 can make a video installing this 😀

*tdracing13
+Joe Quadcopter Thanks so much for sharing this, I haven't upgraded my firmware yet but when I do I will definitely make a video.
+tdracing13
No problem, just be aware you will lose the compass calibration through the transmitter. You will only be able to calibrate through Mission Planner, but that is good because the "compass calibration dance" is not accurate. You don't need to calibrate often.
Great vid! Thanks!
+Richard Stockenstrom Thanks for watching!
+tdracing13 What sort of ranges do you get with this kit td? i ordered one last night. Does it also give you real-time GPS position? (In case i lose control of the thing again and it drifts away :( )
