  • A classic ghost story read by H. Washington Sawyer. Ann Bridge was the pen-name of Mary Ann Dolling, Lady O'Malley, a very popular and successful English novelist, mystery writer and travel writer of the early mid 20th Century. She also wrote a few very nice ghost stories. She was an outstanding mountain climber, the youngest member of the Alpine Society, with 16 First Class accents to her credit by the age of nineteen, in Zermatt, Switzerland, in 1909. Married to a British diplomat, she spent her life traveling and writing. The Accident was published in 1936.

I absolutely loved listening to this. What a fantastic little story. I'd never come across it previously, but it was one of those tales that made me feel like a child again; as though listening to my first ghost story as a boy. At times, I could almost guess where this was heading without quite getting it right; an important reason why I found it so enjoyable. There are numerous unsettling elements in here, such as the postcards, the footprints in the snow, and the disturbing (almost demonic) images at the end which I am unlikely to forget.
I live in an old mining village at the base of a mountain and I could sense it bearing down upon me just like the Matterhorn; the two mountains merging in my mind and distorting with my perception of reality.
Superbly narrated, showcasing your characteristic authentic style which perfectly interpreted the author’s intent. Furthermore, your impeccable timing, convincing character voices and appropriate inflection really brought this story to life and kept me engaged to the very end. This is a newly discovered gem of a tale and I thank you very much indeed.

You are worried that fanatical former climbers of Swiss mountains will possess a young woman as she climbs a Swiss mountain. So you take her climbing a Swiss mountain.

Ah yes. The Fatal Inevitability of the ghost story. The character always thinks he is avoiding the danger, but the reader knows he is actually bringing it on.
