The Hortlak by Kelly Link

A classic ghost story read by H. Washington Sawyer. Kelly Link is an award-winning 21st Century American author of fantasy and magical realist fiction. She is a teacher and editor and totally cool woman of American letters. This witty, sad, surreal tale of twilight-realm retail sales, The Hortlak (hortlak is the Turkish word for "ghost"), one of her early masterpieces, was published in 2003.

This reminds me of Thomas Ligotti - the supernatural woven into the narrative seamlessly, the supernatural made natural. The world when you are almost 20 is very confusing - you think you understand something, then realize you understand nothing, not even what is dream and what is not, what is supernatural and what is not. I feel compelled to go to a 7-11 and deposit sticky dirt and dirty sticks on the counter now.
