It is definitely his therapy and ours. He is so incredibly skilled at writing. Another note, I was shocked to find out about his military background and how he told a superior officer to fuck off when the officer tried to get him to fire upon the enemy who was trying to surrender.
From an interview in the Dailymail on 1 November 2023. "This Morning viewers became emotional as they watched James Blunt perform his touching new song about pregnancy loss - the couple sadly lost their baby daughter. The singer-songwriter, 49, and his wife Sophie, 40, married in 2014, and are parents to two sons - whose names have not been revealed. James went on to write The Girl That Never Was after he and wife Sofia suffered their tragic loss. James spoke openly about his personal life with hosts Josie Gibson and Rylan Clark during Wednesday's show. Speaking about a song he wrote on family life, he said: 'I write songs about the people I need to look after. I'm married to an amazing person and we have aspirations to start a family, some of those aspirations we have achieved and others we haven't. 'There's battles with loss we struggle with. I deal with it by writing songs about it. One of those songs is called The Girl That Never Was."

This song strikes deep in my heart because I had 2 sons that never was the first one I was 3 months along when I lost him, the second one I was 9 months along. It was heart breaking for me and still is. I am 72 and I lost the last one in 1982, my heart still aches for them both.
My first son slipped away while I read him his first and only story " I'll love you forever, I'll love you always " we had been told he wouldn't make it. I got to read him a story and tell him we loved him and he was gone . This song kicks me in the heart not ashamed to say I cry like a baby every time I hear it. To any of you that have lost a child I'm sorry .. you aren't alone . His name was Owen he was born and left Sept 15 2010 he was my son and he had parents that love him. His mom left our younger son and I after fighting a long fight with kidney failure Aug 30 2018 . I carry their memory now .
He did go through this. But he opens his heart to us. But it's healing to him. We should all accept that there are things that we have. But we all have different ways of grieving. James is doing it by putting the story to music. We should pray for and love James. I do!

James Blunt is hands down my favourite solo artist. He doesn’t make as many records as many of his contemporaries, because he puts so much into those he does make. As an ex-soldier he’s experienced enough at an early age to be able to feel and express the deep stuff. My reaction on first hearing this was very similar to yours, it took me a few moments to realise what the song was about, then I saw those little shoes and wound it back to start again and it cut me in pieces. I am blessed with a little daughter who looks just like the little blondie running through those fields and it made me count my lucky stars. She almost had a brother but my wife miscarried and we never dared to try again. Your reaction was real and heartfelt. From over here in England I’m reaching out to wish you the best mate, and let’s keep marching through whatever life throws at us.

When i was in labor with my first born i was induced and had an epidural. When they had me roll to tbe left, all of a sudden his heart rate on the monitor plummeted. Thank God the nurse knew what to do and was able to save him. 😢😢😢 My heart goes out to all the mommas that have lost thier precious babies.
Proud father of 9yr old boy / girl twins . And 30 minutes after they were delivered we were in the recovery room and the nursing staff rushed in and took my daughter because she stopped breathing. MAN talked about going from the highest high to the instant fears. We spent 5 days in the hospital while my Wife was recovering and I would go back and forth to the NICU to deliver “ liquid gold “ for my daughter while she was plugged up to multiple machines so she could feed. Was nerve racking. Our friend who was head of the L&D department was able 2 extend us 2 days. I remember the morning we were finally being forced to leave and I walked back to the NICU one last time knowing we had to go home and the nurse greeted me withe the biggest smile ever. My daughter made a dramatic shift for the better and I was able to hold her and feed her outside the little chamber she was in. I broke down in tears of joy and went back to update my Wife. We eventually brought her home that night. Was the craziest week ever. But 9 yrs later wouldn’t change it for anything. I have the greatest kids ever and am truly blessed! 💯🙏🏼😍
2 weeks ago a son I didn't know I had contacted me. I'm still in shock by it as a single man, but I'm now also glad of it. My head is still not completely over it, I'm working on the situation slowly, but I'd rather it than trying for kids with a partner and failing with it. Feel for James
The Girl That Never Was" tells a heart-wrenching story of a lost dream. James Blunt and his wife, Sofia Wellesley, longed for a child, but fate had other plans. The lyrics drip with sorrow, regret, and an unfulfilled yearning for the child they never had. "We had aspirations, simple aspirations," Blunt told the BBC. "Some of those we've achieved and some of those we haven't." Blunt and Sofia envisioned a beautiful future together. They'd already named their child, a choice they now rue: We never should have picked a name 'Cause now she has a face And now no matter what we do No one will take her place "The balance of emotion is tough," after such a devastating loss, Blunt said. "It's women who go through the main trauma, and the rest of us have to work out how best to help. I don't always know the answer." The song isn't just about sadness; it's also a journey of acceptance and moving on. In the chorus, they acknowledge the pain and the need to find a path forward. Darling, we tried but now it's over We had it all and then we lost The girl that never was Blunt wrote the song with Red Triangle, a British songwriting and production duo comprising Rick Parkhouse and George Tizzard. Red Triangle also produced the track. Red Triangle produced six tracks on James Arthur's It'll All Make Sense in the End album. One of the songs, "Emily," has a similar sad story behind it. Arthur and Red Triangle penned "Emily" when his partner, Jessica Grist, was pregnant. Sadly, after they wrote the song, Jessica had a miscarriage and lost the baby.
when my daughter was born it should o been an un complicated home birth but she was resistant so after 36 hours of labour finally we went to hospital. we lived in the middle of nowhere at the time. She was born safely. A year later we fell pregnant again and everything was great until 22 weeks and she died my poor wife had to give birth to her. we had a healthy son after but
This was the miscarriage of their first child. They now have two sons. I never lost a child that way but this makes me weep buckets. Both my sons went their own way, down a wrong path, and i've lost them in a different way. Maybe that's why.
May I ask where you got that information? I've seen this comment a few times, but I can't find any interview or comment from James where he says that. On Twitter and Facebook, he called the song "deeply personal," and he said that while he tries to keep his private life private, it sometimes spills over into his songs.
@@firstinthedance Johannesburg, South Africa (06 October 2023) - James Blunt, known for his poignant and emotionally charged music, has once again struck a chord with his latest song, “The Girl That Never Was”, but this time it’s personal. This song, a tragic yet comforting track from his album ‘Who We Used To Be,’ has left me, and I’m sure will leave many others, with a profound sense of sorrow and reflection. A couple of years ago, my dear friend Gillian Benson, whom I’ve known since the age of five, welcomed her daughter, Addison, into the world. Gilly is not just a friend; she’s my best friend’s sister, making her my best friend and sister too. And that made Addy my niece by heart, a title I cherish dearly. However, Addy’s time with us was heartbreakingly brief, spanning only a few precious days. We all held onto hope when we visited the hospital, hope that she would defy the odds and thrive. But hope alone couldn’t change the course of destiny, and we found ourselves saying goodbye to a tiny, fragile life and we were all left with an immense sense of loss. Her coffin was so, so small. My RUclips often serves me the best music. The stuff that makes me smile, makes me cry, makes me believe, makes me think and makes me hurt. This one hurt.

Blunt wrote the song with Red Triangle, a British songwriting and production duo comprising Rick Parkhouse and George Tizzard. Red Triangle also produced the track.

You’re smart to pause and talk. It’s kind of like the bell ringing in between rounds and a boxing fight. Give you a chance to recover before going on.
