I'm late, but the story I read was that he wrote this for a woman, who was an American GI, and she was deeply traumatized by what she had seen during her time in the army. She couldn't cope, so she was using drugs and alcohol to cope, and one day, she died due to using. The line about "and someone's little girl was taken from the world tonight" is about her death. He tried to help her, but she was just too damaged. The video doesn't tell that story, but that is what it's about.
Not so much heartwarning as heartrending. James has such an amazing talent for bringing the emotions. Your filter is so dark it's hard to see what's going on but it was part of his duties as captain to return the dog tags etc to the families at home. A harrowing job for sure.
I consider myself quite strong, emotionally I could not do this...I am not an emotional man. Mr Blunt does a very good job of representing the horror of having to inform someone their husband/wife/partner is dead.

Yeah from what I have read, he wrote the song about a US soldier he met in the war in Kosovo who was killed. The soldier was a female and he brought back her things to her parents. The music video was directed by someone else and appears to show the loss of a wife's husband in war. So the sentiment is the same but the story in the song compared to the music video is different.
@@captainboromir6958 Or it's possible it was supposed to be the mother of the dead daughter James brought her dog tags to in the video, (because it definitely looked like a woman soldier to me,) but, for some reason, they just miscast the mother with a woman who was, realistically, a bit too young to play her.
