    I think the best cheap way to capture valuable VHS tapes is to preserve the original resolution, colors, and structure of the picture. One of the most common and totally stable method is to capture with a standalone DVD recorder device and then grab it with a PC and you can do what you want with that mpeg2 content.

    • @DoubleMonoLR
      @DoubleMonoLR Год назад

      They're also not perfect to start with though, and the lossy mpeg2 encoding doesn't help - particularly as they're typically limited to about 15Mbps per second from memory. It's a shame they never seem to allow higher quality recording options, especially for models with a hard disk. Naturally if any editing/enhancement is done it will also have to be recompressed.
      Even capturing via analog in to DV/firewire out passthrough on a MiniDV or Digital8 camera seems to give slightly better results, in my brief trial. And of course the DV codec is well suited to editing.
      Some av to hdmi converters seem to just make a better digitization of the analog signal, even with upscaling etc.
      It is frustrating how difficult it is to get a very good capture in the original resolution and interlacing, especially when TVs etc convert analog video effortlessly and look fine.

    Szia!Egy olyan problémába ütköztem hogy kaptam egy Philips VR 170 típusú videókazetta felvevőt amihez vettem egy SCART to HDMI átalakító rendszert amit összekötöttem a Samsung típusú újabb TV-n USB-vel.Viszont csak hang van a videókon mikor elindul a lejátszó, kép nincsen (no signal). A lejátszón a Scarton kívül még van egy aerial cable és egy TV coaxical bemenet (utóbbiban nem vagyok biztos :/).Lehet az a baj hogy még ezt egy mondjuk coaxical kábeles összekötéssel a tv antenna bemenet helyére kellene megoldanom és sikerülne?Fölöslegesen nem akarok sok kábelt venni ezért a te segítségedet kérem.Ünnepekre szeretném a családnak.🥺

    Hello! What SCART TO HDMI converter is that? Looks great !

  •  3 года назад

    Hello! Mindenesetre furcsa.

Many DVD recorders can't handle when recording so they have special digitisation electronics to help stabilise the signal. On many DVD recorders if you just loop your problematic video through the inputs and outputs it will still use it's electronics to try and stabilise the video signal, although it may add its own degradation so only use when needed.

      PAL, NTSC és SECAM jelet is támogat a Scart to HDMI. Sajnos semmilyen s-video képes eszközöm nincs, úgyhogy nem tudom ezt megmondani. @@embergabor Köszönöm! Nekem nagyon fontos lenne az S-Video bemenet, ezért még nyomozok. Ugyanakkor az RGB bemenet is jól jönne néha, jó tudni, hogy az van rajta. Mert ezen például nincs, viszont ezen van S-Video:

      www.ebay.com/itm/HDMI-to-Male-AV-S-Video-Adapter-1080P-Video-Converter-Box-with-AV-Svideo-Cable/313002509517
      Az is fontos, hogy lehessen váltani 720p/1080p kimenet között, vagy csak 720p-t tudjon. Az 1080p túlzás VHS-hez, és valószínűleg S-VHS-hez is az lenne (bár annál és Hi8-nál azért megér egy próbát). Feleslegesen nagy fájl az eredmény, és nem hoz minőségjavulást. A 720p-re felskálázás hoz javulást, mert bár a valós felbontás nem nő meg, de nagyfelbontású kijelzőn nézve nem lesz pixeles a kép, egy 480p/576p videóval ellentétben. Helyette csak az alacsony felbontású analóg videóra jellemző, homályos kép marad, ami engem kevésbé zavar, mint a pixelesség.

    • @embergabor
      @embergabor  4 года назад

      A felskálázásnak leginkább azért van értelme, mert a mai tv-k nem valami szépen kezelik a 720p-nél kisebb felbontásokat. Viszont azt figyelembe kell venni, hogy ezeknél az "olcsó" cuccoknál igazából egy méretre méretez a készüléken belül, és azt húzza rá a választható kimenetre, szóval kb ugyanazt a képet fogja adni 720p-n és 1080p-n is. Nem részletesebb a feldolgozás. Ha igazán jót szeretnél, Akkor vadássz le egy Extron DVS204 vagy DVS304-et ebay-ről. Az tisztességes scalerrel bír, és azokon van kompozit, s-video, RGB, komponens, rgbhv (VGA) bemenet is. Ebből láthatsz egy nagyon cifra kombót a videóban. Ettől sokkal egyszerűbben is meg lehet oldani, ha találsz DVI vagy HDMi kimenetes Extron scalert.

I suspect that it is more likely the AV to HDMI causes ghosting (blend deinterlacing?). Usually HDMI to USB only digitizes the image since the AV2HDMI does the deinterlacing already.

      I currently have a VCR DVD combo that can output deinterlaced component video from VHS (I tried a component to hdmi converter with it but my better HDMI capture device the Elgato HD60S+ cannot handle it directly which is a shame). I found some combo drives with HDMI output too but they are a little too expensive but they seem to be the easiest way to get godd quality video capture out of a VHS.

      VHS tapes record in a format that is somewhere between composite and s-video, so using RGB or Component etc won't necessarily be much better as it will still be converted from the original lower quality signal.

    How to digitize VHS at HD resolution?
    I want to save the wedding tape (memories) of my parents.

      Use a device like the Scart to HDMI in the video. It has HD output. VHS ->Scart to HDMI->HDMI capture card. Don't expect it to be magic upscaling, it will have the same detail as the original tape.

      If you want to add detail and upscale I use Topaz Video Enhance software. It uses AI to add detail. It's $300 unless on sale but it works wonders on noisy VHS recordings. You need to experiment with the settings but if you're serious it does work. You can even upscale VHS to 4k. Don't expect miracles but I found it amazing.

    None of those methods are ideal, Analog video capture has its own standards, you can’t just treat it like a camera feed, The standard that governs analog to digital conversion is Rec.601, 704x480 NTSC and 704x576 (PAL/SECAM) (720 with the padded horizonatl black pixels).
    The only two methods that can achieve that is a high quality USB/PCI capture device, or an analog to SDI converter box and then from SDI to USB. Those are the only two methods that adhere to the Rec.601 as used in the D1 standard by Sony back when they made the first analog to digital recording deck using a 3/4 inch digital cassette recording system.

      If you have a VCR that has component output or transcode composite to component then you can use an OSSC for example that does analog to digital conversion with the proper timings and color. You can capture the hdmi output of that.
      Please link those capture devices you mention for others to find. It may help someone to capture beautiful VHS video. Thanks

    Why would the SCART device be designed to stretch the picture. That bad design makes no sense.

    • @embergabor

      Because it’s a cheap device and most consumers probably want fullscreen 1080p. This is not the intended use case.

    Scart to HDMI makes crashed shadows and oversaturated colors, so it is lame device. And besides, it can't make 4:3 picture by adding pillar box. Trash.
