Probably happens often enough (with over booking or changes to booking that doesn't refresh in real time) that the gate agent just thinks I'm sure it will be ok. We can always figure it out on the plane if we have to but I'm under pressure by my bosses to get these people on board asap.

@@hueyfreeman7810 It wasn't a different airline. He took a picture of a boarding pass on the same delta flight. When the second person the actual owner of that boarding pass scanned it I'm assuming it showed up as red and the Delta employee checked the person's name and id and it was correct so they brushed it off as a technology error and let the passenger board. But there isn't really any information on exactly what happened when the second person scanned the pass. This dude was extremely clever but also really stupid.

I was a ticket/gate agent. The system DOES show that the boarding pass has been scanned and the assigned seat would have changed to green on the screen meaning the person was good to board. If scanned a second time a red notice would show already boarded, do not board. That should have then prompted the boarding agent and second agent to take note and investigate it after final boarding. Before they close the aircraft door all passengers are to be seated and overhead bins closed. Lavoratories are to be confirmed empty and manually locked from the outside by flight attendants, before safety demos and pushback/tow. If those duties were performed the situation would’ve been realized before they left the gate. The ball was dropped twice in this situation.

The agent just didn't investigate. Also, flight attendants should make sure bathrooms are empty before take off. He was able to do this b/c of people being complacent & not understanding the severity of doing their job correctly. You would think after people flying planes into buildings airport workers would never let their guard down. It only takes a few seconds to check a bathroom. As for him, clearly this is not his first time & he should never be allowed to fly again. I know some will say, "people make dumb mistakes in their 20s". However, there still must be consequences.

Relax. The guy was just a garden-variety criminal, not a terrorist. He had a Delta "buddy pass." One of his relatives works for Delta, and gave him a "pass" that allows for a "standby priority" seat on Delta. Obviously, the flight was full, which means the "standby" passengers (or, at least, this guy) were not going make the flight. That should have been a Big Clue to the guy that the flight was FULL. The guy had either a "Real ID" drivers license, or a passport, plus this "buddy pass" which legitimately allows him through TSA security.
