    Economical Power House that Improves Upon the 4530/4540.
    This is a great, economical, high performing printer. It is noticeably improved from the previous model, the Epson WP-4530 / WP-4540. I owned and loved the WP-4540 as my primary printer. This WF-4630/WF-4640 improves upon the 4530/4540 by: (1) A noticeably better color touch screen that is more colorful, more responsive, better audio cues. (2) Has more options and features. (3) Scans faster at higher resolution levels. It continues the benefits of fast printing, duplex (2-sided) printing, fast scanning, duplex (2-sided) scanning, easy setup and software, great wireless, economical printing with large capacity 786 & 786XL ink cartridge support, great print quality, and just being a power house. This seems to be a decent upgrade.
    The only difference in the WF-4640 vs WF-4630 is whether or not it comes with an optional second paper tray to place under the unit that is the same otherwise. I have the WP-4540 that has the extra tray, and decided not to use it because it made the printer larger and I just didn't need the capacity before reloading in my home office. I use duplex printing and scanning a lot on the previous model (WP-4540). I love that it just mounts the USB port as a remote drive, so I just leave a USB key plugged in and copy the files from my PC. Scanning directly to PC (on the old model at least) was significantly slower and didn't offer many of the options for some reason. After a short while, scanning would sometimes pull in too many pages at a time, so I just feed them one at a time when I hear the audible click when the existing page is pulled in far enough. Two sided scanning works sell, but if too many pages pile up in the output, it can suck some previous pages back in from the output tray as it pulls the current page back for a second pass or to flip it.
    The only concern I have is whether or not the 4630/4640 fixes the common internal defect that plagued the 4530/4540. After a year, many 4530/4540s would leak yellow ink in a single line down the center of the page until exhausted, ruining output for a while, until you ended up with a high quality black & white printer. Mine was affected by that, but Epson replaced mine free of charge after the warranty expired. My WP-4540 still has some banding on color output sometimes. I am just hoping the 4630/4640 has rooted out the problem. Btw, my Epson Workforce 840 that I infrequently print to has never had a problem. Only time will tell. But everything else about it shows me that they improved a number of things.

    Do you know if you can purchase the printhead for this model? I found a new one in the box, but I think the print head is missing and of course the ink and power cord. Otherwise the machine is brand new. Is there another model that would have a print head to fit???

    First of all thanks for the review.
    I'm looking after a 4640 and I have a doubt... if paper is in the back slot it remains however possible to choice via software which tray use?
    FAX paper source can be setted?
    THANKS!

    • @reviewsbytiger
      @reviewsbytiger  10 лет назад

      The fax input feeder can only be the top to feed into the scanning bed. For the output, the printer driver (on Windows) or the printer LCD menu options don't let you specify a specific source for fax from what I can tell. It does let you pick default paper size (letter,legal,A4). But I can't say what will happen if you leave the main tray empty and paper loaded in the back regarding where it prints output from. Otherwise I don't fully understand your question. But I don't actually fax from this machine. I just print and scan a lot to USB.

    Hello...I just bought 4 brand new ink cartridges for my Epson Pro WF 4630 series printer. My copies started coming out green instead of black and/or color. I hit the set up...maintenance...head cleaning...head nozzle check...but it still prints green. I had my printer for a couple of years with NO issues whatsoever and do small to medium usage on it. Please help. THANK HELP.

    I was hoping you would somehow address how to clean print head clogged nozzles or refer to this issue in this review. Any information on this?

    • @reviewsbytiger
      @reviewsbytiger  4 года назад

      I still love mine and use it several times monthly... for scanning everything. But for printing, I too couldn't overcome the head cleaning required and all the ink it used on repeated attempts. I was not going to buy another round of ink just to see if I could waste it on "head cleaning" cycles :( … it improved some by the official head cleaning process, but one of my colors never fully recovered. I gave up on ink, and bought an HP Color LaserJet (M477fdw) that can sit unused without heads drying up, and prints perfectly every time you come back to it. Original toner cartridges can be nearly 100 each (of 4), but I bought and use generic toner replacements for 65-85 for a set of 4 and they have been working great. At this point, I think I would consider some cheap off-brand ink alternatives to get this Epson printing again, hoping they were as good as the generic toner replacements. Newer models of all these are getting "smarter" at trying to lock out generic ink or toner replacements, under the premise that they don't want you to get conned into a fake one when you thought you bought the real thing. I believe you can turn such detection off, but might vary by model or brand.
      Even though my HP Laser has a two-sided scanner (in one pass), I still prefer this Epson for its remote access to the USB storage of scans, and file size & quality. But my color laser has already outlived the life span of the print time from the Epson. While it worked, I loved it. Now I still like it only for scanning.
      If yours is plagued with ink head issues, I suggest you move on from it. Otherwise I'd look into off-brand alternative ink or something, which can be a gamble of its own, but at least will not cost and arm and a leg just to try its cleaning cycles. But it is possible that off-brand will not work as a detergent to "clean" as well as the HP ones might do.

    I don't expect a reply but I'm hoping I get one. Does this printer print if there's only a black cartridge inserted? It seems it doesn't to my disappointment. It seems to require all cartridges inserted. :(
    It tells me that my black cartridge is full, which is true.

    Thanks for the WF4630 review. I recently purchased the same unit in September.
    Are you able to print true borderless 8.5x11? My WF-3540 will give me the option of a box to check for selecting borderless, however the same option is not appearing for the WF-4630. I am finding that the WF-4630 wants to add a 0.116 border to photo printing, so disappointing. Thank you for your response.

      Where would I find this? I don't see any options in the printer driver for controlling borders. I usually see that per application, such as in MS Word. Can you please clarify where I could check? Else you could try emailing Epson support. They are surprisingly helpful when I've contacted them in the past.

    Does this printer print duplex graphics in the exact same place on each side? My current Canon Pixma MG7120 prints the second side 3mm lower, which essentially destroys the CD booklets and inserts I'm printing with it.

    • @reviewsbytiger
      @reviewsbytiger  10 лет назад

      I don't know for this one. But I would bet many printers have some variance in the paper feed. Not tested on this printer, but I've printed the same thing twice (single-sided) and found text in slightly different positions. I think the paper feeders may not always be precise. I can see how that is important for two sided graphics. You probably aren't sure whether it is the original side or the duplex side is actually the one to be off in your case. If it is the first side, you might want to try the alternate / manual feed drawer (often in the back or on top) where you may be able to more precisely control the starting position, or at least just get different results. Also as printers age, I've found the pickup rollers don't grab or pull as uniformly when the rubber grips less. But again, I haven't tested this printer for that, but I'm not sure results would always be consistent outside of a professional printer service. You might want to just print two pages and face them back to back if it is just for personal use.

    Hi, thanks for the review. It was very helpful.
    I have a question though with regards to scanning to pdf. Can this printer scan multiple pages to pdf automatically without intervention (unattended scanning) using the feeder?
    I am hesitating between this model and the new model Epson EcoTank ET-4550. The WF-4630 is cheaper but ET-4550 is more economy with regards to inkt consumption. Any advice? I print about 50 pages/month. I mainely use the scanner for scanning pages to pdf.
    Thanks

    • @reviewsbytiger
      @reviewsbytiger  8 лет назад +1

      I scan to PDF a lot using the feeder, 2-sided works too. It is *much* faster to scan to a USB stick I leave plugged into the front, then copy over the picture from the mapped network drive that it mounts automatically for you (at least on Windows 7). For whatever reason, scan to PC takes noticeably longer, and offers fewer resolution choices. But to USB, you have all the choices, and is trivial to access as a remote drive that is always connected. I also always end up scanning at 600dpi for black, or 300dpi for color, and the results for documents are excellent for me, and scan pretty fast.
      One thing to watch out for, which may be true of any feeder, that in time, and with a larger stack of sheets, it pulls the first few pages as usual, but by friction, the remaining sheets inch slightly closer each time, until eventually it pulls in a few sheets and you have to start over. Honestly, this hasn't happened with this model for me yet, but I don't use it in a way that allows it to do that after my experience with the previous model. I just line up the sheets and feed them in one at a time (which should be overkill), and set the next one in once I hear the click of the feeder sensor realizing there is no next page. It scans fast enough that it isn't really a chore to do it that way. But just think of any printer, as it gets older, they eventually don't pick up paper as well and jam. I think this is the same. This model scans so much faster than its previous model too
      I too print so few now that the economics aren't that big of a deal. I did prefer the larger ink cartridge size of the previous model to this one. Btw, this model is older now. I am surprised it is not already replaced by a newer model, unless that is the one you are referring to. But regardless, I am happy with mine.

      I don't understand your question. If you are asking how it works, you just select scan option, choose to scan to which source (USB memory, PC, etc), pick options if you want higher dpi, and press color or bw button. I think in this video I showed it scanning. I always scan to the USB first, then just access as a remote drive found easily from Windows Explorer. I haven't tried it from mac.

      Phoenix A This printer has big cartridges it uses a 786 or 786XL and they hold a lot of ink. It will print for a long time before needing a replacement cartridge. I was going through cartridges quickly on my HP office jet and the print speeds are fast, real fast and good quality too. ADF scans well. I've scanned up to 28 pages fairly quickly at 400dpi black and white even 600 dpi black and white scans are ok as far as speed goes. Set it to color and 600 and it will take a long time to scan. It comes with a scan app for windows and works well

    Hey thanks for the review, it was good and I enjoyed. Just a quick question though if you don't mind?
    The text/basic graphics print quality, how is it compared to a laser printer?
    I'm trying to decide whether to buy this printer or a laser for a small business. Personally I'm more inclined towards a laser as I like the sharpness of the text but would like to know how the text prints from this printer in comparison.
    Also I need something that will not smudge when wet, or fade due to low ink/ink problems or anything like that, any help is appreciated, thanks.

    • @reviewsbytiger
      @reviewsbytiger  9 лет назад

      Laser is definitely the most crisp, especially on plain paper. The inkjet output looks like any other inkjet output that you might expect. I can tell the difference. I think the claims for laser quality might require different paper. I had always stuck to a monochrome laser for my home office for years. The key here is color, unless you were going to get a color laser :) . Printing maps or even documents with color differences really makes a big difference in readability. I used to plan to print to my laser for black & white, and to my inkjet for anything that needed color. But you can't let an inkjet sit idle or it dries up, so I just print to my inkjet now and my laser sits idle.
      Plus I find that these inkjets have a much better multi-function element (scanning) than the one built into the laser I had. I'm sure there are better multi-function laser printers out there. Duplex printing (2-sided) is best on laser too because there is no amount of bleed through (just fused particles to the outside of the page) so text shows through slightly less. However 2-sided still works well on this laser, even with plain paper, but it isn't the same as 2-sided on laser.
      I was really worried about ink smudging too. I stuck to laser for the longest time for printing mail labels, etc. But I think inkjets have come a long way with inks, they dry fast, and are generally okay. I honestly just print mail labels from this one too, but I'm not running a business on it, and I cover important aspects with packing tape after putting a mail label on a box to make sure something remains readable. However, I've never once smudged the ink from this printer. But I've not tested by spraying the paper with water either :) .

      Thanks for that, it was very informative. Yea I was thinking of going for a colour laser printer, I think that would suit my needs a lot better. Majority of what I will be printing will be text documents, labels, barcodes and those types of things, mostly black and white with some colour with occasional basic graphics.
      As labels and barcodes may get wet (on boxes in rain) it is important it doesn't smudge. Especially here in the UK where it tends to rain a lot lol.
      I won't be printing photos or pictures much or anything as such, and if I do I won't be needing great quality. So text quality is really priority for me as well as it being cost effective. So seems laser would be the best way for me to go.
      You have been a big help, thank you, really appreciate it.

      Btw, I actually have the 3640 too, and I believe the 4630 is a noticeable improvement. I have a separate video that goes over some of the comparison focusing on the 3640. I was surprised that the 4630 was noticeably better than the 3640, except for the ink volume. The LCD panel is noticeably better, the LCD panel has more choices and settings, and the 4630 scans noticeably faster which is something I use a lot. Plus the 3640 was plagued with the yellow ink streak problem affecting a number of people, including mine (which was replace for free even out of warranty).
      Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with both my 3640 & 4630, but I use my 4630 all the time now.

      Correction: Sorry, I have the 4540, not the 3640. All my comments about my previous model pertain to the 4540 , not the 3640, including the speed and yellow ink streak problem. As far as I know the 3640 has no such problems. Sorry for any confusion.

    Does this device support OCR scanning? In other words, does it output to different formats?

    • @reviewsbytiger
      @reviewsbytiger  9 лет назад

      Natively it scans to PDF, JPEG, TIFF (single page), TIFF (mult plage). Generally, OCR is often a software aspect that runs on your computer, and often you can initiate scanning from the OCR software, which converts from one of the native formats. In the past, Epson usually installed a free version of an OCR tool. I am not sure where the OCR translation is within the software for this model, if any. It used to be standard fare on any scanner for at least the basic versions. I think you'll have to check the Epson website for more info.

    can this printer scan multiple documents at once ? ADF Scanning ? or can it only scan one by one pages ? does it has wifi scanning ?

    • @reviewsbytiger
      @reviewsbytiger  4 года назад

      It can scan multiple documents at once. On the flatbed, if pauses in between and lets you flip sides, or scan more. Through its auto document feeder (ADF), it scan as many pages as can be fed through it before it detects no more pages. It can scan both sides automatically, through two passes when using the ADF. It can scan to PC via software on the PC, and that PC can and printer can each be connected via WiFi, but I find it a little limited. There are other scanners out there that will scan both sides from the ADF at the same time in a single pass. Once thing I really liked about this one was that the USB device can be mounted as a remote drive location (automatically during printer setup) to make it easy to access scanned documents. Scanning to USB offered more capabilities.
      Still, the printer itself eventually broke. I did really like its scanning capabilities so much that I continued using it for a long time, until the printer one day wouldn't turn on again. I got a lot of use out of it.

    I'm really having trouble... I can easily place the envelope in the rear feed, but I have no where I can find to direct the printer to use the rear feed. It continues to use the tray/front feed. Nothing in the manual shows how to instruct the printer and the dialogue box I used to see with my prior Epson printer "Maintenance, Utility," etc. is no where to be found. Which brings me to another questuion - if I want photo quality how do I specify that?

    • @reviewsbytiger
      @reviewsbytiger  8 лет назад

      1. I would first check the printer properties / preferences / settings in the print dialog that selects the printer. On mac or windows, it should give you all the options in general, and I assume one of those will be paper source. On windows you can usually also edit the defaults in the printer settings, for things like 2-sided. On mac I've had to select it each time I print for 2-sides as an example, but on Windows does so by default because I altered the default preferences.
      2. Run the software update checker and see if it wants to update the firmware on the printer, or the driver on the computer. It should run automatically and once in a while prompt you to let it update. But you can have it check (at least on Windows) by just running the check for updates program in the epson folder it installed to.
      3. My rear feeder works automatically regardless of what paper source I had selected (at least on Windows) because the printer just beeps and prompts me saying that it detected something in the rear paper and the paper size does't match the paper drawer, and whether I want to print from the rear feeder. This works for envelopes on mine anyway, where it know the size doesn't match. Not sure if it would do the same for a normal 8x11.
      4. Try removing all paper from the drawers and see if it will pull from the available paper source.

      +Reviews By Tiger Thank you for this. As it turns out I called Epson. They had me go to Devices and Printers, right click on the Printer icon, then click on Printer Preferences and then the dialogue box came up. Now when I open any document, I can click to Print and before Printing actually see the Printing Properties dialogue box to make specific choices. Perhaps opening from Divices and Printers "activated" the dialogue box... But it was not visible before going through this exercise. Appreciate your help!

    • @reviewsbytiger
      @reviewsbytiger  8 лет назад

      1. Usually clicking the easiest print icon in many programs will automatically print with default printer preferences, no dialog. But there is often a menu choice to print that will give you the full dialog -- File > Print. Varies by program.
      2. At least on Windows 7, it is always confusing between the 2 choices "Printer Properties" and "Printer Preferences", one of which is the dialog you are looking for, and the other just basic driver information.

Sometimes you start off with a somewhat helpful rep until they confirm it is a legitimate problem, then it seems you get routed to a super helpful rep that gets it done. I've also found that being nice to them always helps, but still persistent about what you need solved (in the nicest way you can muster).

    Hi Can you tell me what it's like INK wise? I have an HP 8500 premium that I purchased a few years ago and it made the same promises about ink........and it uses ink like water. It works well but very costly to run, even though HP said it was 50% less costly to run. I trust LASERS for sure but I am curious what your thoughts are on this one?

    • @reviewsbytiger
      @reviewsbytiger  9 лет назад

      For my home office use, it seems to last fairly well. But note that the previous year's model 4530/4540 supported larger cartridges, which did seem to last forever for me when used in a home office. Supposedly this year's model doesn't support the line of cartridges that is quite as large. But for me, it still seems like normal ink usage and the ink isn't yet as cheap as the previous year's model.
      I believe ink cost/yield it is relative to the Epson line and its own cartridges supported by a model. There seem to be multiple models and cartridges that claim to be an improvement in yield/cost. It seems to start with the cheapest $25 black-Friday models that have to make up for it with really expensive ink value. Then in increasing models they seems to support better and better values over their equivalents. And then within the cartridge line they support, there are often choices that offer a standard and an XL that claims to be 50% or so better than the standard. But it could be apples to oranges in comparison between cartridge lines. The truth is in the projected yield if you want to compare cartridge to cartridge if you can find the information. It did that for the previous year's model, but didn't research the true yields on this one as comparison.

      I have a monthly reminder to always print about 6 pages to each of my inkjets to keep the heads fresh. I use this printer as my primary, so it isn't really an issue for me. But I have other inkjets that I don't want to get rid of, use as backup, but I still print monthly to them. I just grabbed a copy-paste from a good amazon product page and put it in a word doc. I just check the quality.
      When one color runs out, it still keeps printing, but it nags you about ordering more unless you tell it you already ordered.

      Reviews By Tiger I use a printer for my office work and probably print maybe around 200 sheets a month give or take. I don't think much more than that. So that's why I am wondering if this unit is worth it? I like that the keypad is there bcz I fax a lot.

    What is the best printer between epson wf-4630 or hp officejet 6978?

      I switched to an HP Color Laser Jet Pro (MFP M477fdw) that is several years old now. But I love that ink never dries up, and great quality prints front & back, fast, and great 2-sided scanning. Brand-name toner is expensive, but I've been using very cheap off-brand toner and has been fine. They streak before they run out and I just replace them. But you can get all 5 toners for the price of one if you go generic :) .
      I had still liked and used my Epson for scanning, but eventually that stopped working when it started getting an initialization error at startup with the printer part and wouldn't let me continue scanning.

    how do you get your computer to print with a print dialog with these things? for some reason my Mac doesnt get one when i connect it to HP wireless printers

    • @reviewsbytiger
      @reviewsbytiger  8 лет назад

      Generally, it should be the difference between using the easiest to find print button, and using the print option from one of the menus, like File > Print. When I print on my mac, I usually end up with a printer select dialog, and from there I have to pick properties because once you select the printer it prints to it. Also consider some programs may only offer this through a "Print Preview" option that may offer additional options before you print (something I've seen a few times, but not that common in my experience).

    The whole reason to have an ADF is to avoid having to scan 1 page at a time. If it doesn't work properly, it's DEFECTIVE. I returned my previous (older model) WorkForce printer because it kept jamming up by sucking in more than one page at a time on the ADF. I got this printer as a replacement hoping that the ADF will not be defective.
    Have you had experience trying to scan a stack of documents loaded on the ADF? I'm hoping the ADF is not defective on this model. I haven't read good things about Epson's support, so, I don't want to deal with them if I do end up having trouble scanning multiple pages on the ADF.
    Also, if there is ANY banding at all, then the claim of "better than laser" would be completely bogus. I would not accept any banding/white stripes from a modern printer, my Canon BJC-6000 from ~20 years ago NEVER had ANY banding and printed film quality photos with inexpensive ink. If they are claiming this printer is improved, why would anybody accept any kind of imperfection in print quality?

      ADF: I scan multiple times per month, but I choose not to stack documents on the ADF. I've used it to fax documents and to scan to save to USB (which I then access as a remote drive to copy to PC rather than the direct to PC option). The only reason I do that is because the *previous* model's ADF would occasionally suck in two pages at once later in a thicker stack. But it was only after quite a bit of scanning, and thicker stacks. Since my scan page counts are usually small enough, I don't mind just feeding them.
      The scanner / ADF is noticeably faster on this model compared to the previous at higher resolution & color settings.
      The *previous* model would scan duplex fine, but if you let too many stack up in the output (maybe 15) it might pull some back in during the duplex operation, more likely if the pages are folded and not laying really flat. But for larger scan jobs I just periodically pull them out of the output tray. To be fair, there is only so much room under there.
      Re Banding?: Never seen any.
      Re Better Than Later?: Looks like inkjet to me. Color is really nice. I used to love my monochrome laser, which does print the best, but I choose to print to this for for its low cost color printing so I just print color. I honestly haven't attempted to print with color settings set to highest qualities. But at the default settings on this compared to a default settings on a color laser, I think a color laser if likely better with defaults. But then again you might have to choose better quality settings to get it. My epson photo printer printed as good or better photos compared to the store.

    thanks for the info but looking for a demo on how to use the rear paper feed slot....can' figure out to get it to print my cardstock...have been searching for an hour now

    • @reviewsbytiger
      @reviewsbytiger  10 лет назад

      I use the back slot for envelopes. Just set the stuff in there where it stops naturally and it seems to get it. You don't have to force it deeper, even though it seems like it isn't in far enough. For me, it is usually automatically handled by the software. When there is paper in there, it uses that first, else draws from the drawer. If I forget to load an envelope, I get an 8.5 x 11 with my envelope info on it. But that is using MS Word to print envelopes, so perhaps there is a combination of MS Word of the Windows printer driver. Else I would think you can specifically select the paper source and it should work.

    • @reviewsbytiger
      @reviewsbytiger  10 лет назад

      I just printed an envelope today from the back. But one thing was slightly different than the previous model -- it prompts you on the LCD screen. At first it didn't print, and when I checked on it, it had a prompt on the LCD screen asking me if I wanted to print from the rear feed. It said that it detected that the paper source was not the size for envelope #10 and wanted confirmation if I wanted to print from the rear instead. The previous model just printed from the rear feed without asking.

    Didn’t need anything fancy-just needed a printer/copier for returns etc ruclips.net/user/postUgkxciSwynMJ7PnUvvx11rewiu-yFBkZTl53 . And since I no longer have a PC I was using the printer at work. Decided to get this for easy at home labels for packages, and it worked out great. And I can use it right from my phone, Wherever i am. It can also be used without a phone for making copies. Haven’t used it for printing photos yet, but ink works great so far.

      @reviewsbytiger  9 лет назад

      Sorry, I had trim the video to 10 minutes (Amazon rules), so I can only cover so much. I have actually faxed about 5 times from this, each time with ease. The scanning works exactly as you see in the scanning demo, and then it just sends it. You can hear it dial out, and then it just sends in the background, and there is a light that is on while it is in progress. It will only tell you if there was an error. But you can bring up a job history menu and confirm that it was successful until you trust it. I found it easy to use. But I didn't see a way to have it print confirmation if you preferred that.
