    Just FYI: The cartridges that you get in the box that come with the printer are not actually full size normal cartridges, but sample ones. They have about 1/3 the ink stored in them as opposed to a regular cartridge. That's not to mention the XLs.
    Edit: I worked at Staples for a time, and always mentioned this to customers so they didn't have any false expectations.

    The only thing that worries me about this printer is all the moving parts. Generally the more moving parts, the more things to break down. I counted at least 3 items that didn't need to be motorized: the paper tray, the touch screen panel and the printed pages output tray. Of course, it does add to the "coolness" factor. :)

    Well, for the third time in two years, I've purchased something as a result of this channel. This really is a gorgeous device, and I'm loving the fact that you don't need to walk across the room to prepare it for printing, or that the top sheet of paper can't get dusty and print poorly if the printer has been idle for a while. The only thing I really don't like about it, is the fact that the heavy glass scanner lid does not have a damped hinge. But apart from that, nice find Matt.

    Good to see that HP haven't abandoned the cartridges with the printing head built in for standard printers, having the head clog up is something that has put me off Epsons for life. See-through scanner is a nice novelty.

    It's been a long time since I've purchased a new printer but a couple of notes (based on my preferences and usage)
    1. Favorite printers have been HP PSC models. Front loading and ejection (space saving), squareish design. I have gotten them at goodwill.
    2. I like the double sided. Saves a lot of work when reproducing printed works (manuals, instructions, etc)
    3. I don't like the paper loading system. I print a lot of stuff on the blank backs of used paper (i.e. one at a time). It seems that the feed system would be a pain in that case.
    4. I would worry that the mechanized feeder system is an additional thing to break, making an otherwise good printer useless.
    5. Writing this in 2022, it is probably no longer available.

    The top down scanner is a good idea. No more having to worry about dust and junk that gravity could suck into it to disturb your scans.
    Wanted to share that I liked the "old," full length spinny machine start up and shut down intro and outro. What's the name of that spinny machine anyways?

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  11 лет назад +10

      The old intro was taking too long, and looking a bit tired, although I preferred the leisurely pace. It's a old Philips Reel To Reel tape machine with a slight modification.

    I bought the Epson WF-3520 last year new off of ebay for £90 delivered, it has a lot more functions than this one (no apps though) and a full replacement for the four ink cartridges cost only £2.50 off ebay too! Third party cartridges obviously. I've never had a problem with it and I think it's a great buy -could you review it? People might be interested in a more 'cost effective' printer. Awesome reviews!

    I got one of these second hand for around 95 USD. One of the best wireless printers I've used. I like that I can create an email exclusive to my printer, send a pdf to that email and it will print. My one complaint is the auto sliding drawer. I wish that there was a dedicated button on the front to open the drawer. The scanner is super quick and the scan can be sent to multiple emails at once.

  • @Jerbod2

    Great review, make sure tot properly protect the printer as it's easy enough tot hack these things, especially with feautures like memory, which keep previous scans in there which can pose a problem when scanning your ID for instance.

    Very nice printer! Although I wouldn't touch and inkjet again with a barge pole: the ink eventually dries up and clogs the heads, causing rubbish prints. It's laser for me from now on.

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  8 лет назад +10

      +ncdv47 I was told that if you use genuine inks they don't dry up, it's the cheaper compatible inks do. I thought this was marketing nonsense, but I found it to be true. I only print on this printer every few weeks and never had any issues with clogged heads or dry inks. In the past I used cheaper inks on previous printers and had lots of problems.

    • @TheOriginalNCDV
      @TheOriginalNCDV 8 лет назад +9

      +Techmoan I don't disagree. I suspect it really depends on how long you leave the printer idle for. I only used genuine Epson ink in my previous photo printer. After 6 months of non-use, the heads were clogged and causing nasty streaks and voids on the output. After wasting copious amounts of expensive ink to unsuccessfully flush the heads, I reluctantly binned the printer. :-(

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  8 лет назад +7

      +ncdv47 fair enough. Lasers weren't any use for photos though the last time I was looking into this, I bought a dye sublimation printer for printing stills, very impressive results and work out cheaper than ink jets.

      Even electrostatic printing can be compact, by using LEDs instead of lasers. Yes, LED printing quality is worse than laser but Xerox a few years ago went ahead and reinvented the LED printhead. The result is a 1200 x 2400 dpi image that looks better than an average laser. Not only that, but to make the LED printhead even better, the printhead is driven by DELCIS, which in turn is driven by IReCT, MACS and IE.
      Sounds VERY complicated but this technology is so good it is even used in Xerox copiers.

    I just got this printer.. It looks great. I like the print jobs.. but.. It can not copy from thick books. Being a musician, I always copying music for jobs. The manual says I can take off the glass top but it does not tell you how to do that. This makes the printer rather useless for me. I read someone broke theirs off to copy their thick text books.. but I really don't want to break mine. Any help is appreciated!

      I've found that because I print only occasionally, printers that stand the paper up at the back just get full of dust and the paper warps over time. I'm much happier with this set-up where everything sealed off when it's not in use. As I get older I'm getting more mellowed out, so trolls don't even register any more.

    First, I didn't know you actually had Costco in England. Those cartridges don't look too hefty... I don't think they will last too long, and that's where the money will be swallowed up. It is interesting from the tech/novelty aspect and I hope none of those solenoids and motors go bad on you. It reminds me more of a modern DVD car radio than a printer. But can it scan butts / bottoms at office parties easily, and accurately? That's the true test of a good scanner/printer.

    I print very infrequently... Like 50 sheets a year. And I find the ink ones never have ink available when I want because they dry out. So I use a laser printer. Have yet to replace the toner.
    Though it's annoying it's so big. It's an all in one mono laser with a flatbed.
    The only compact ones i have seen are ones that only print. The scanner is just too useful to not have
    I like the envy but it's a bit to much for an inkjet for my tastes

    Interesting but ink is a non-starter for me. A toner-based laser printer is what I need. Also needed to print double-sided, because I’m cheap, and colour wasn’t a priority, because that’s not the sort of thing I print. Lastly I decided I wanted a wi-fi network printer, first so I can print straight from the iPhone if I want, second so I could stow it away downstairs in some spare space in the laundry room, so I’m not constantly tripping over it yet I know where the prints are generated. I wound up with the Brother DCP-7065DN for about $100. Cheap, cheerful, top notch printing, and literally nothing to ‘moan’ about!

      @@Techmoan Just a quick heads up - it's been over 8 years (and some 5 or 6 cartridge replacements) but this printer is still holding up quite well. There has been some slight misalignment of the print carrige (barely visible small offsets between the printed lines), but otherwise it's still kicking. Granted, it's not being used more than a few times a month all these years, but I'm still surprised that it hasn't given up a ghost after all this time (and, given the crazy printer and ink shortages that are happening for the last two years, I'm kind of happy that it hasn't died yet). Happy to see that you yourself haven't let out ghost either. :) Cheers, ol' chap!

    Great video. I'm in the market for a new printer since I left my old Epson PX710W with my parents when I moved out. I loved that printer for the same reasons and requirements as you. This one actually looks like a quality product despite the fact that it is an HP. Pretty much every product from HP I've ever owned just randomly dies after a short time, so they have been banned from my household since like 2002. But its been over 10 years so maybe they have done something about that shit quality on their consumer grade hardware.. And HP ink is so much easier to get then Epson ink, so I might just give this printer a chance.
    You just earned another happy subscriber :)

    Does this printer also refuse to print in black, when the color cartridge is out of ink?
    I currently have an HP printer. The color cartridge is empty now and that god damn machine simply won't do anything anymore, except complaining about that cartridge. I don't print a lot, and I never print in color, so I refuse to buy a new color cartridge. And decided to throw away the machine.
    Please tell me the Envy 120 can print in black even if there's no color cartridge inside...

      I can't answer your question but I can say that I have an HP printer that allowed me to print in color black when the black cartridge ran out.

    This printer is nice but its all automated and being an HP means that this printer will probably break down soon. I have a Canon Pixma MG 7120, it is an amazing printer, Ive had it for 5 years? Not one issue, 6 ink carts, it prints amazing quality, best I've ever seen for this price. Just saying.

    And I just gave up ink jet printing and purchased a laser printer this week. I have for ink jets that were purchased over the last 10 years in my store room, and so many cartridges that the HP printer settings refuse to recognize as genuine. Good bye to liquid inks...

    Don't get HP printers. My Photosmart Plus was using up ink at a phenomenal rate(about 15 pages per cartridge, that's it) so I called up HP. I unfortunately had it for 13 months and missed the 1 year warranty. They refused to do anything other than a $20 discount on the next model HP printer. I had probably wasted about $80 of black and color ink. What would make me want to get another HP product at that point?

    People keep complaining about ink cost while laser printer exists. For 50 bucks you can get enough toner to print 2500 pages (you can get it cheaper if you get them refilled at an authorized location instead of buying brand new cartridges).

      I've been printing a lot of other things for the last few weeks - I'll probably need to pick up some new inks in a week or so. I'll buy some XL ones next time. Over the years I've found that the best way to save money on inks is to not buy a printer.

    • @Techmoan

      It's just activities to print out and colour in and puzzles etc, not the game. Most apps are things to print - the weather app is one of the few that runs on the LCD screen itself.

      Techmoan ahh okay. Probably quite a nice novelty feature to show off (that's the only printer that I've actually found interesting haha) but I could imagine kids would soon use up all the link with the apps!

    I had it's predecessor, the HP Envy 100. Yeah, people would come over and be like, "what the hell is _that_ thing..?" Cool machine. Too bad Windows 10 didn't want to work with it. Also, some of those apps built in are obsolete and have been removed.

      Techmoan I made that mistake, got a Kodak printer, ink was cheap, but printer was very bad, keeps going to sleep and you have to go and push the button, which is no good for a wireless, so replaced with an Epson that works like a charm :)

    Now that I think about it, the one thing that I'd want from a new printer is that it's able to last longer than 3 months before it starts to falsely claim the cartridges are faulty.

    I just bought this bad boy from my work today on clearance for only $70!! Had to go through the setup for awhile, been about 7 years since I've last bought a printer. To everyone who is complaining about ink, and cost of ink, get in line. Ink is and always will be the achilles heel to printers. If it REALLY bothers you, wait for a deal at your local Office Depot, Staples, or Best Buy and jump on a printer trade in promo and sign up for Instant Ink with HP when buying a new HP printer, its a similar system to Dollar Shave Club, and you save A LOT more money.
    In all, LOVE this printer so far, after performing a "ink cartridge clean" the quality of the prints are outstanding. Prints HORRIBLY slow from USB/SD Cards, but apart from that its a great machine.

    The "feature" I don't care for on my new HP WiFi printer is that anytime my computer is on, I must also have the printer turned on, even if I do not plan on printing anything. With the printer Off, the computer constantly searches for the printer. It took me a while to figure out why my computer was always busy. Even though the printer sleeps, it consumes electricity needlessly. See, I never mentioned ink! ;-)

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  11 лет назад +2

      Your set-up must be a little bit different to mine, I find it only looks for the printer when I press print - this is in OSX. This is also the first wireless printer (out of two I've had) where it doesn't needs a reboot every few days when it loses the network connection (not since I bought it a few weeks ago anyway). Thanks for avoiding any consumable chat - ink costs is quite possibly the dullest thing in the word to try and have a discussion about. I had to fend a dullard off in Costco who wanted to strike up a conversation about ink when I was looking at the printers on the shelf....what's wrong with these people, if you can't afford the ink, don't get the printer - end of.
