The same reason why people want console. Its dedicated branded device that will work as intended right out the box. Not everyone wants to deal with PCs.
I feel like the switch has a few advantages over sony and Microsoft when it comes to handhelds. 1 file sizes most switch games under 16gb while sony and ms have games way bigger than that. 2 battery life the steamdeck isn't really praised for it's battery life if ms and sony make more powerful hardware the battery life will take a hit that will make them look like the inferior product
3 - Nintendo games do not rely on graphics. A handheld that could run the next God of War well would cost a lot and have serious battery issues. 4- Nintendo IPs are simply bigger, more popular. 5- Nintendo games are more pick up and play by nature. That goes well with the handheld audience.
The reason why Nintendo beaten sony on 3 generations of handheld is the fact that they need games that made sense for the handheld and their pricing and ego destroyed them.
@@whysoserious4274 I loved the vita, but this thing would be very different. First you have diminishing returns combined with moores law dying, so in order to make any significant graphical increase so it'll have to be gigantic to have any type of leap over previous systems. It makes a lot of sense both for Sony and Microsoft to break into the market of handheld consoles. The Switch is, after all, the most sold console and that is certainly not only because of the popular IPs of Nintendo, but also due to the fact that it is just nice to have a portable device which one can use everywhere. Also, I think it will be good for the gamers in general if there is more competition in this space. In the sense that both Nintendo and Valve (with Steamdeck) might have to offer more for less money when there are more options for the customers to choose from (like "little" Playstations or Xboxes).
The switch is the most sold console because they have mustplay games. Steamdeck didn't even sell 5 million units. And u can play much more on that. It's not about the handheld format is about the games. Always were. But xbox is just terrible in realizing that.
@@d.bcooper876 I agree that Nintendo has great games that sold millions of copies, and that might be the main reason for people to buy a Switch. But on the other hand there is no reason for Sony and Microsoft to not to try to become successful with handheld consoles as well. The main reason for people to buy an Xbox is not the games, but the services that come along (Gamepass predominantly). So I would not be too pessimistic that a little Xbox would not sell well.
I think the next generation is def gonna be focused on handhelds. Switch 2 vs PS5 Portable vs Xbox/Windows Handhelds vs Steam Deck. Windows handhelds could potentially run a version of Xbox OS and to access the desktop and other stores you’d have to restart like a Steam Deck.
it may or may not work. because it'd just be a ps5 that can potentially play certain ps5 games and hopefully all ps4 games. When it comes to branding, it may work. But the options of games is of course not going to keep up with pc gaming handhelds or even the Xbox handheld if it has pc gaming allowed. I would buy a playstation handheld if it had ps1, ps2, and ps3 store backwards compatibility.
Loving the more frequent posting Destin! I’m defo up for a properly portable PS5/PS4 native and then streaming of PS6 if I’m guessing timing. I have to say I love my PS5 Pro / Portal mix and streaming on the portal is next on my list once I’ve done my 2025 budget lol
So do they call it the Portal 2, and advertise it as enhanced features with standalone gaming since the Portal name is valuable. Or would that be confusing to people thinking it’s another streaming handheld and they do a new/resurrected name.
I missed out on the PSP and the PS Vita myself, because I was not into the PlayStation Ecosystem during the PS3 and PS4 generations. (I got a PS4 Pro for about 300 bucks after the PS5 dropped because I couldn't get a PS5. "Upgraded" up to the PS5 about 8 months later when I managed to get one at MSRP.) Because I missed out on the first two, I am genuineky curious about a new PlayStation handheld. I guess it will come down to who drops theirs first: Xbox or PlayStation. Because I doubt that I woupd get both.
Destin definitely works for IGN, the post suggests competing with the switch, Destin say Steam Deck😂😂😂. Switch is the standard, no one but valve have deck sell through number which is low for a handheld.
Everyone wants a good ps handheld no one can deny that. If it works good and battery last around 4 hours or more its a definite buy. The portal with just the new update changes everything. I bet it sells a whole lot more now
If playstation makes a handheld that is truly portable and not just a cloud streaming machine I would jump on it. Having a handheld that I need to be connection to a good wifi connection is not worth it. For that I can stream on my phone .
Its crazy how people who schill says competition is good, but then try to say that any company making a new product that's not a part of their favorite eco system is bad. Hypocrisy? Sony has had handhelds. MS is the late one to the market, but i think it should still be made even though it'll be a rough sale when you can literally play anywhere 😂😂😂😂😂😂.
i mean tbh. the xbox handheld does have a higher chance to allow more games than playstation. i wish i could install ps1, ps2, and ps3 games on my ps5.
Maybe sony will do a stupid thing. Sony would probably will make a handheld that will make you download the games on the handheld only and have the cloud version also. Thats why they said a ps5 on the move. And people are willing to pay $600 handheld now.
The way I see it is ms won’t release a handheld until the competition release theirs believing they’re ahead of the game, ms announced a few years ago they invested hugely into silent chipsets, current handhelds don’t use these as much as what ms is investing so this next tech leap could start with that new device
They gotta say “years away” so as not to kill Portal sales, haha… At this point, if and only if I get an opportunity to buy a 30th anniversary at the next rumored availability window from PSDirect, I will probably hold off buying one if this is some kind of Portal plus.
if playstation makes a handheld, they better make an Infamous Remake to release alongside it or something. Sony to me needs to actually look appealing again beyond Horizon, Spider-Man, and TLOU.
The fact that PlayStation is looking into a handheld that doesn't surprise me at all. Sony 's. Been more invested into hardware than the home team. The more compelling thing I believe is how Nintendo will respond to what used to be their market being invaded by everyone else. I personally think Nintendo resting on their laurels will not work and they need to make another revolutionary change. Maybe this would be a good time for them to go hard on a home console imagine Nintendo coming out with a system that can compete with the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox
Why compete in power? If graphics aren't improving why make a more powerful piece of kit? Honestly, nintendo has an advantage of being able to create whacky new ideas. When power becomes irrelevant nintendo will win with gimmicks
"they may never launch" haven't heard that tagged on before now. Here is my prediction... Next gen will be "100% cross gen". So PS6 will release next to a "PS5 Portable" and all games next generation will support both. The divide between generations is so small now, there is no reason not to. It will be less of a gap than SeriesX/S and would not come with the same headaches.
I love the fact that all those playstation Fan boys that hate xbox are the same fanboys that are funding xbox. They all have playstation plus and microsoft makes money from that subscription because playstation uses microsoft servers for them to stream their games 😂😂😂 THANKS PONY'S
Who ever brings out their handheld, be it Nintendo, Sony or Xbox, with Steamlink support will have a leg up over the competition. Just my opinion. Steamdeck is cool but if I can have a PS or Switch handheld that will also stream my PC games I would be very happy.
You need to take the Microsoft approach aswell which was leaked that they are making a hybrid pc handheld docking console. So you can play both pc games and consoles games. Playing Playstation games alone doesn't make any sense
I couldn’t care less about handheld gaming. Regardless of maker, I’m just flat out not interested. I worry about the market getting saturated, but whatever, let them all launch one and figure it out.
I wonder if Playstaion opened up the portal to work with the cloud as a stand-alone device due to the new marketing of Xbox. Cause Xbox used it to tell people these devices all can run Xbox cloud. That is also why Xbox does not need to do a portal thing that playstaion had to.
They should rather do a PS4 handheld. That can play some PS5 games. Would be cool to play the entire PS4 library on the go. If it can play PS5 games it would suck battery, and it would probably be a 30fps mistake of a device.
Like a steamdeck? Or ROG ally? The hqndheld would be 1080p max so you wont loose any battery on PS5 games. Why woukd I buy a device which only plays ps4 games when my steamdeck can play ps4 and ps5 games?
@@SWOTHDRA Because when you are already in an ecosystem, you can play it's library. I have a Legion Go. But I don't like to game on it. It's slow. Game needs to be optimized. A Playstation handheld would be like a console. It would just work. And thats all I want.
Sony and Microsoft are way too late on the handheld market for this gen and onwards, especially saying things like 'might not even release' or 'years away' respectively. Especially in Microsofts case. They should have been thinking about a handheld during the Activision acquisitions. Valve is way ahead of these bigger companies in a lot of ways.
@inamorta47-playertwist , it wa estimated sold 5 Million units. Base on Store and distribution. That's why Valve don't publish the sales number cause it is low.
Bring it on PlayStation handheld! I just bought a ROG Ally days ago to be my Game Pass machine, since the Xbox handheld is "years away". Do even better and beat the Xbox handheld to the market!
Nintendo: Switch 2 needs to be more powerful than the steam deck when away from the dock, and edge out the Xbox Series S when docked, this is so it can play games like the upcoming GTA6. Needs to be $399. Sony: PSP3 should be very late to the party so it can match the PS5 in terms of performance and come out as a handheld PS6, alongside a more powerful console that plays the same games. Needs to be $499. Microsoft: They should be targeting a 2026 launch for the handheld, it should be the series s of their new generation, something like 6TFLOPs targeting 540p upscaled to 1080p. Meanwhile their Xbox Series X replacement should target 4K60fps and they should play the same games. Needs to be $399. Valve: Steam Deck 2 should come in 2026 and offer 8-10TFLOPs of performance and a 1080p screen. The dock should also support video out through the base of the dock so it can just be a powerful PC version of a Switch. Needs to be no more than $599. They should also shrink the current Steam Deck to a smaller size and charge no more than $299 for it.
Switch 2: Underpowered for sure, it's Nintendo...but what they need is that..."miracle" triple A third party port, that you never thought could be done on the hardware. They need it at launch. MS: EXCLUSIVE games from their new acquisitions, New Halo, Gears, Forza. Sony: about 100M to pay off desperate third parties, so that their games are exclusive to the system.
@Destin your thoughts on digital only game distribution, closed echo system, anti competitive infrastructure in place. Do you think all store fronts like the ps store should be more open to competition and allow the sale of digital codes from other outlets to allow competition and maybe cheaper games.
I wonder, if Xbox does a handheld, will they also put mobile games on? I seem to recall Windows flirting with running Android apps and they are going to do a mobile store, so maybe they bring that to their handheld in addition to Xbox/PC games.
I loved the vita so much. I'd easily pay $500 for a console that can play vita, PSP, PS4 and PS5. I have a decent library already, and could just download everything. I already have a 1tb microsd and 2tb microsd exists. By that time 8tb might be out, 4tb is coming next year
They need to just remaster the original psp to a new version not like the vita but have all the new games involved in it and even old ones like need for speed most wanted etc. I specifically want all my kids to have the original PSP because it was way ahead of its time and it was just all around great but if you could bring like Fortnite or any newer call of duty to that platform I guarantee you there sales would absolutely sky rocket!
Why would Sony make something to play PS5 games, if it launches after PS6? Do you mean it will play PS6 games... Knowing Sony, after the new handheld releases, theyll say theyre going to stop making PS5 games and focus on PS6 😂
Nintendo just needs to make sure that the Switch 2 is just as tank tough as the original 😂. I got a nice carrying case with cartridge pouches, but a lot of times, its in my pocket without the pouch, so it fits in. I've dropped it 😂...the glass screen shield is a must. But everything else on the system can take a beating. Even the cartridges can survive a nuke strike 😂. I dropped Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 in water. Pretty sure it was done. I put it in the Switch a week later after it dried out, and the Nintendo and Marvel logos appeared on the screen 😂
("DEATH2SONY"😂)People have forgotten, MS is the only newcomer here 🙂... Sony is no newcomer to Nintendo's turf. The PSP did okay, but it was left in the dust by the Nintendo DS. Vita vs 3DS is not worth even mentioning, a TOTAL rout by Nintendo 😂. Vita was resigned to a cult anime/import niche. Sonys backroom dealings with third parties is always a threat, but they were handled quite easily by Nintendo the two PREVIOUS times.
Sooo Nintendo is competition now? And here ive been told how nintendo just goes off and does there own thing so now there competition. NEWS FLASH Nintendo is THE competition
I dont see how sony or xbox has a chance to compete with handhelds against steam and Nintendo. Steam deck has on its face, acess to pc library which include nearly all xbox titles and many playstation ports. Not to mention you can also use game pass on the steamdeck. The steamdeck is also an incredible emulation machine. The nintendo switch strengths are its phenomenal collection of exclusive games. They have the lions share of the family friendly demographic. Even if xbox and sony come out with better hardware and better prices vs steamdeck and switch/switch 2 people are not going to buy them because you can play xbox games anywhere , and you can play playstation games on pc. Why pay for another handheld that lets you do less? The only way they can compete is if they make it like steam deck where you can have a pc os on it. And i really really doubt sony will do that. Xbox might, but if they do they still wont probably sell as well as steam deck
Personally the wishful approach I think SONY should pursue for the next generation. Holiday 2028 (November) release the PlayStation 6 console. Come SPRING 2029 Drop Two Handhelds SAME TIME. March 2029 Sell TWO handhelds: PlayStation PORTAL Gen II & the PlayStation Portable 2 (Or whatever they call it) PORTAL Gen II strictly for streaming from the console or through the PS premium service.
The PlayStation Portable 2 should be a full fledged stand alone hand held that plays all your PS games (Whole PS catalogue - Can Play PS6 games at lower resolution / lower graphical settings), obviously capapble of streaming as well. BONUS - The PSP2 can be docked with the PlayStation 6 and can provide a 20-30% performance boost to game performance.. Some AMD Magic so perhaps they can skip the PRO PS6. Both should have OLED or one has the QD-OLED screen. WIFI 8 (WIFI 8 should be appearing in products around 2027 so 2029 is reasonable). Both should have the latest USB-C ports - one on top of the device and one at the bottom and should allow for the PSVR2 to connect to both handheld devices. SSD 2TB Standard w/ ability to upgrade. If possible, if the technology is available for mass market production, incorporate state of the art SOLID STATE BATTERIES in both devices. PRICE: Keep the PlayStation Portal GEN II price at $199 since it is only streaming. The PlayStation Portable II I would price at $999.99.

My ROG ally already does all of this. 😅
If they do. They better do something about the scalpers.
Why go after nintendo. This is the wii era all over again.
Compete against Nintendo? Pfft...
The reason why Nintendo beaten sony on 3 generations of handheld is the fact that they need games that made sense for the handheld and their pricing and ego destroyed them.
Nintendo also has innovation to their handhelds
Only 2 generations and the PSP did quite well
I still dont think either company understands Nintendos success.
@@Matt-jc2mlman a psp revival would go so hard
But only if it’s done right
if it’s just another portal with a different name
I have no hope.
@@whysoserious4274 I loved the vita, but this thing would be very different. First you have diminishing returns combined with moores law dying, so in order to make any significant graphical increase so it'll have to be gigantic to have any type of leap over previous systems. So it won't be pocket sized like vita and PSP, and it also wont have its own games, and it'll be pure digital. But it'll have good things too, like being able to fully play console games. And not from the then 16 year old PS1 like last time, but full PS5 games (supposedly). So I'm curious, but it'll be a different thing than past handhelds
Yet they pulled the plug on all previous handheld consoles. Sony's such joke
I love now that all American podcasters are saying "bespoke" instead of "custom" just because the British guy from DF says "bespoke" 😂
The same when everyone started to stay "opinion" or now saying "moving the goal post" I heard player essence say that first. But many other words people copied off of others. I really don't like it. But whatever.
no, people are saying phrases like "bespoke" because console gaming is dying and fewer and fewer are buying the overpriced hardware like it was a new iphone.
Bespoke is a great word, so I don't see the problem.
@@MagiofAsura I didn't mention it as a problem. Of course there's nothing wrong with it. I just think it's funny. Most Americans don't say "bespoke" that's why it's become a meme to the DF guys. Americans say "custom" for the most part. It would be like calling "cookies" "biscuits" in America, while it wouldn't be wrong, most ppl will look at you with a funny face. There's zero doubt in my mind he's using the word because he got it from DF.
@@isturbo1984 console gaming isn’t dying. PS and Nintendo are doing just fine.
Everything Sony does is wrong.
PSP was my all time favourite handheld such good memories
First let them make new games instead of remake over remake over remake.
they should remake infamous tho… one remake that’s actually necessary
I think more competition is healthy for everyone, this could be a really good thing for the industry!
Yes competition could be good. I don't think they understand why Nintendo is successful.
Nintendo never failed nor lose handheld market for decades.
A PS5 handheld would be mostly useless. However, a PlayStation 6 in handheld form could be outstanding if handled correctly.
How much will this piece of crap cost???
So do they call it the Portal 2, and advertise it as enhanced features with standalone gaming since the Portal name is valuable. Or would that be confusing to people thinking it’s another streaming handheld and they do a new/resurrected name.
I missed out on the PSP and the PS Vita myself, because I was not into the PlayStation Ecosystem during the PS3 and PS4 generations. (I got a PS4 Pro for about 300 bucks after the PS5 dropped because I couldn't get a PS5. "Upgraded" up to the PS5 about 8 months later when I managed to get one at MSRP.)
Because I missed out on the first two, I am genuineky curious about a new PlayStation handheld.
The PlayStation handheld will sell more than a steam deck & any Xbox device 🤣
Everyone wants a good ps handheld no one can deny that. If it works good and battery last around 4 hours or more its a definite buy. The portal with just the new update changes everything. I bet it sells a whole lot more now
The portal is my go to right now. Love that thing. Incredible value for what it does.
I like how people keep saying Xbox and steam lmao
As long as none of these handhelds run on windows everything will be alright 😮💨
If playstation makes a handheld that is truly portable and not just a cloud streaming machine I would jump on it. Having a handheld that I need to be connection to a good wifi connection is not worth it. For that I can stream on my phone .
Its crazy how people who schill says competition is good, but then try to say that any company making a new product that's not a part of their favorite eco system is bad. Hypocrisy? Sony has had handhelds. MS is the late one to the market, but i think it should still be made even though it'll be a rough sale when you can literally play anywhere 😂😂😂😂😂😂.
I mean... I said I'd buy it ha ha.
@@DestinL no one cares about your opinion except the desperate fanboys you pander too Destin , always making yaself look a 🤡🤡🤡
i mean tbh. the xbox handheld does have a higher chance to allow more games than playstation. i wish i could install ps1, ps2, and ps3 games on my ps5.
At this point xbox and ps handheld and it's fanboys already at war 😆😆😆
Finally, i think i will purchase a handheld. Everytine i save money for Nintendo switch, i buy other stuff. I hope it wont be so over priced
I pumped more hours on my vita than i have on my xbox series x over the last 2 years
Maybe sony will do a stupid thing. Sony would probably will make a handheld that will make you download the games on the handheld only and have the cloud version also. Thats why they said a ps5 on the move. And people are willing to pay $600 handheld now.
They still suck at supporting ancillary devices so its not all that exciting. Look at how well they supported the psvr2.
The way I see it is ms won’t release a handheld until the competition release theirs believing they’re ahead of the game, ms announced a few years ago they invested hugely into silent chipsets, current handhelds don’t use these as much as what ms is investing so this next tech leap could start with that new device
What's the point of a tech leap when graphics have almost plateaued
If Xbox handheld is opened to PC then there's no need for PS only on the go.
The update for the portal is already live u can steam games without the console
To compete with nintendo and xbox? LOL they mean steam deck.
I wasted $400 buying 2 off that shitty play station portable
Battery better be replaceable
Just buy a Steam Deck Oled/Steam Deck 2 and you'll be much happier.
You need to take the Microsoft approach aswell which was leaked that they are making a hybrid pc handheld docking console. So you can play both pc games and consoles games. Playing Playstation games alone doesn't make any sense
Never had a vita but I really enjoyed the psp, playing battlefront 2 on the go was pretty sick.
I thought that's what the PS5 was for, to play PS4 games
@jrican7581 Haha.. Nice one! So far, your not really wrong.
Microsoft can stop with making their handheld, this Sony hardware is also an Xbox... Everything will be an Xbox in the future😂
Disagree, Valve's not done enough to deter or run away with anything, it's a growing sector unlike traditional consoles.
I'd be interested in an Xbox handheld if done correctly.
Valve turning from PC to a console company hahahha
Steam deck was estimated to have sold around 5m to 15m.
Thats not running away.
I’m excited for the new PlayStation portable console
Meme “Shut up and take my money!” 😂
Ps handheld is going to be very expensive , I’d put it around $699
which means the portal was a bust.
Forza horizon 5 to ps5? Any updates?
@Destin your thoughts on digital only game distribution, closed echo system, anti competitive infrastructure in place. Do you think all store fronts like the ps store should be more open to competition and allow the sale of digital codes from other outlets to allow competition and maybe cheaper games.
What third party company is going to take a risk sony better pay AMD to make a APU that is able to run ps4 or ps5 if possible
Look at that disingenuous fanboy smile in the the beginning 😅😂
Handheld is trash if the ps5 pro didn’t save Sony 😂what chance does a second class handheld have 😂
I wonder, if Xbox does a handheld, will they also put mobile games on? I seem to recall Windows flirting with running Android apps and they are going to do a mobile store, so maybe they bring that to their handheld in addition to Xbox/PC games.
Can't be more open unless they use Linux & that would suck because multiplayer games don't run on Linux.
PlayStation Portal Pro/Plus incoming
Just a few days ago i beat a game on the vita lol, and i used to play psp sooo much in middle school and high school
Whatever happened to Xbox VR?
Personally the wishful approach I think SONY should pursue for the next generation.
Holiday 2028 (November) release the PlayStation 6 console.
Come SPRING 2029 Drop Two Handhelds SAME TIME.
March 2029 Sell TWO handhelds: PlayStation PORTAL Gen II & the PlayStation Portable 2 (Or whatever they call it)
PORTAL Gen II strictly for streaming from the console or through the PS premium service.
