The PSP was a success. It sold a ton of units, it had a lot of third-party support, a lot of straight up PS2 ports which was insane at the time. It just wasn't nearly as successful as the DS was.
Sony misunderstood the market. What people wanted and got from the DS was family friendly games that were designed to be good on the go, make use of duel screens and make something unique and interesting with their list of top quality IPs. Sony made something that ran old console games well enough on a tiny screen. If I got home playing a PSP god of war, in an ideal world I'd want to dock it like a switch and play it on my TV. If you're playing professor Layton, brain training, Pokémon, Mario or Zelda games you wanted them on that hardware, with the touchscreen available. TLDR, I think it's crazy to say that the DS had no right to eclipse the PSP. Sales figures and legacy don't lie. It was fun and revolutionary and knew it's audience.
To be fair Nintendo dropped the DS, an updated DS, DS Lite, DS XL, 2DS, 2DS XL, 3DS, 3DS XL, and an updated 3DS XL as well as countless collectors editions just from the Zelda franchise. Easily one of my favorite handhelds ever, but literally every iteration I just listed counted as a DS sale, and they almost all had different prices. It’s like Nintendo saying the Switch sold 143 million units when in reality the Switch Lite is selling really well too, and it’s a completely different piece of hardware (although the performance is the same, you know what I mean)
@@paranoidandroid___1248 ds and 3ds are different consoles in different generations and their sales are reported separately. The DS and 3DS both separately blow the PSP and the Vita out the water. The PS Vita was a lovely bit of tech. All the modern "handhelds" are way too big, bulky and heavy to make much sense as a true on the go portable device. They're more for playing in bed or on the couch or going on a trip.
The size is what allows them to be so powerful. My first complaint about the switch was the size. It's too big to be a "portable" device. The lite is ok, but I much prefer the size of the vita. It fits in a pocket. But I love my Rog Ally. It's not meant to be portable, it's like you said for the couch or in bed... or even docked with a mouse and keyboard. I think of these handheld PCs as a different form of laptop, not a portable device like the vita or psp.
The best thing about the PSP and Vita was the fact developpers had to be creative to compensate for hardware limitations. Lot of those handheld games were tons of fun and had a different flavour because they were exploring original ideas. Would love to see that again!
Hey Jake, thanks for doing more than your part to make the internet, and especially the gaming space, a bit lighter, exciting, and positive. Grateful that you take the time to share your content with the world!

Problem is will they charge for separate handheld versions of games you already own on PS5? The good thing with Steam deck is you don't have to buy the games you already own again
New psp . Xbox handheld . New deck . Asus , msi , lenovo an all the other chinese brands handhelds . switch 2 . Android phones getting powerful enough to run console games natively or emulate windows games ..... We are truly entering handhelds era
I love my Legion Go and don't know why it's never mentioned because it's a Swith on steroids and can pay basically anything that can be played on any handheld. It can play steam, xbox game pass, and emulate basically anything. The screen is bigger and the controllers are detachable and can be used as a console.
I think it makes a lot of sense that everyone is now jumping onboard the portable gaming trend. Handhelds are no longer inferior to home consoles. You can play full-fledged, triple-A level experiences on a handheld device, rather than having to rely on developers creating separate experiences built around the limitations of hardware, as was the case in the days of older Nintendo handhelds like the DS and Gameboy series. I feel that the Steam Deck and other PC handhelds played a big role in this shift. The Nintendo Switch kickstarted the initial appeal of being able to play console games on-the-go, and companies like Valve raised the bar by injecting their systems with hardware that could be competitive with a PS5 or Series X. And I think it’s just a very smart business idea to have this kind of alternative. A handheld variant is cheaper, for both the manufacturer and the customer buying it, and provides an experience that cannot otherwise be achieved with a home console. I firmly believe that handhelds are gonna become an essential product for the gaming industry in the near future. Not just for a select few companies that do them, but for every company looking to sell hardware or software.
This is a delusional take. The switch was responsible for it all. You guys think we forgot when everyone was banging on the switch and said handheld gaming was dead and no one wanted it. Nah the switch birthed the SD and everything after it all, SD did nothing to penetrate the market with 4m sales and did nothing revolutionary than the Switch. I realize people never want to give Nintendo their flowers for anything.
Speaking of PSP - there's a new game coming from the makers of Patapon - Ratatan! I loved my PSP so much. Does anyone remember Pursuit Force? Play the crap out of Syphon Filter, Killzone, GoW, Socom Fireteam Bravo and so many more... Freaking Patapon and LocoRoco were so much fun
Dope watch as always! Really hoping they go all in on the handheld. Coz the Portal is a cool device but it seemed like such a halfway solution for portable gaming. So makes so much sense for them to just release a full on standalone device again that people can take on the go with them like the PS Vita and PSP era. So they need not necessarily make specific game cartridges for them but at least give people native downloads to their digital libraries so you can go and play on the go without having to constantly be on a strong internet connection
I must admit, I love my portal. With the browser fix a couple of months ago it feels like a pure handheld. With so many games requiring an Internet connection anyway I can't see them doing much more than the portal. Rumours in my opinion.
That’s why I’m saying. It’s objectively a good game and even though I hate Ubisoft I can’t fault them on the results, but equally I can’t buy a game that needs their crappy software to launch, especially when this is a company with a known precedence of removing games, save data and stealing information. I’d have to be insane to see all that and still spend so much on the game. Why they even thought that launcher thing was a good idea is beyond me smh.
@@brooklyn9291 I tried playing the demo on console to hopefully buy it there and they locked the demo with a Ubisoft login. You couldn't play the demo more than once on PS4. They lost my business at that point. Who locks a single player demo on console behind PC DRM?! How?! I wanted to give you money...Damn it...
I just got a steam deck and love it. Not only have games run soooo smooth. They are also graphicly insane! I wasn't expecting much difference from the switch OLED. However, the steam deck takes full advantage of its capabilities. My only complaint is that now the day I get my steam deck today.... vavle has everything on my wishlist on discount... like they knew.
I think a Sony handheld that plays the existing library of games in the PlayStation ecosystem is a great! I have a sizeable library and a handheld to play those games would be great. I hope it’s simple and just works great. I’m not sure I want them to do anything “extra”, I’d prefer just a solid PlayStation handheld for my games library. The Vita was probably the nicest handheld console I think has ever been made, with the Gameboy Advance SP in second place.
Sony should use their IP's to make themed handheld at launch. Horizon-, Helldiver-, Astro-, anniversary-themed etc. we would empty our bank to get those instead just regular editions
It would be great if they launch a new playstation portable console with a catalog of all their first party games ready to be played with the ps plus subscription or the option to use our digital owned games, that could be great.
Hopefully Sony will release a PSP 2 soon because the Hybrid Handheld Gaming market is lacking a competitor to Nintendo. Even if the sales are not as good as the Nintendo Switch, it will put pressure on Nintendo to reduce the price of their Games or devices.
If this thing is able to have access to the psn and play current gen games it’ll be a hit. It would be a handheld that can play every game in Sonys library.
I’m cool with Sony doing a hand held so long as they start releasing some games. The PS5 hasn’t had a lot come out lately, the VR set definitely hasn’t had many new releases, so if you’re gonna do a portable you’re gonna have to release some games I’m interested in before I fork over the cash.
It’s great to have for air travel! I had the PSP and the PSP Go and the Vita.. all great for the time for airplane and or road trips when you don’t have to drive! The portal is nice for home use if you can’t have the TV because your wife or kids are using it, it’s a nice option but you can’t use it without proper internet connection.. I have a switch just for air travel, at home I hardly play it, home is PS5 pro time 🙂 stellar blade at the moment 💯🎣
I still play with my Vita here and there and I love its oled screen. I’m prob gonna buy the new Xbox and PlayStation handhelds. I can’t wait to see how each company goes about it
The Vita was really cool and while I personally have no need for a new handheld, I'd still be excited to see a new PlayStation one hit the market. I'd be extra excited if they throw in backwards compatibility with a bunch of Vita games or revive the Vita's PlayStore entirely, I think that would make it very interesting for a lot of players.
The 2k launcher was such a hindrance. It was known to negatively affect performance. I just replayed the Mafia trilogy and had to circumvent the launcher on start-up
Ive been using my steamdeck so much lately. I love it. PlayStation Portal is on my xmas list and i cant wait for it. Now that it plays off of wifi rather than Bluetooth, i can play it at work on my lunch breaks haha. I wonder what a new handheld from them would look like? I bet theyre going an all digital route. Like the Steamdeck.
companies "keeping up" is a good thing! competition is good for all of us! eh, i typed that before you mentioned it lol I'm personally on the retro handhelds rn, i might have time for more handhelds in the future now that i have kids...
I just want a handheld that's small enough to fit in my pocket and handles GameCube and PS2 emulation extremely well. I love my Vita, but it can't properly handle the entire SNES or GBA library. Tho, it is an absolute beast for Sega MD (Genesis) and TG-16. It's been over 12 years. It's time for Sony to bring the next handheld. Hopefully it won't be as big as the Switch.

I still have a PSP, Vita and Portal. None of them get a ton of use anymore though.
That's the most Metal Gear-ass shirt I've ever seen
Ps vita is underrated it has capability but lack of support and exclusives killed it.
10:11 marvels midnight suns is underrated
Sony should use their IP's to make themed handheld at launch. Horizon-, Helldiver-, Astro-, anniversary-themed etc. we would empty our bank to get those instead just regular editions
Man, I just want to lay down on my couch and play games. Handhelds and consoles do this for me. The Switch has been the best.
I watched Detroiters when it came out. Thought even then it was underrated. Great show.
Nice T-shirt! Instantly took me back 25 (!!!) years!
New Ryzen APU running at max 1080P could run standard PS5 games at 1080P/40. It would be great.
I'm playing STALKER 2 with little to no issues on a Rog Ally X. Handhelds are defo back
If this thing is able to have access to the psn and play current gen games it’ll be a hit.
Looking into getting a steam deck now that i am working evenings... hoping itll let me play with friends
I still play with my Vita here and there and I love its oled screen. I’m prob gonna buy the new Xbox and PlayStation handhelds. I can’t wait to see how each company goes about it
Really itching to get the portal even tho I have a steam deck! 30th anniversary collection is so nice looking 🔥
Developing Vr games or handheld games
It will be interesting to see how sony will manage both systems
The Vita was really cool and while I personally have no need for a new handheld, I'd still be excited to see a new PlayStation one hit the market. I'd be extra excited if they throw in backwards compatibility with a bunch of Vita games or revive the Vita's PlayStore entirely, I think that would make it very interesting for a lot of players.
The 2k launcher was such a hindrance. It was known to negatively affect performance. I just replayed the Mafia trilogy and had to circumvent the launcher on start-up
I love my Vita. Wish games still came out on it
man, i almost stop gaming, then i tried the steam deck and boom, i bought the OLED and absolutely love it
They need one that can compete or outcompete the Rog x which is the bar right now in terms of performance
I am still rockin my Vita. Mostly for emulation.
Detroiters is an all time favorite of mine. Really wish we could have gotten just 1 or 2 more seasons
4:49 this is the correct portable game
If you can access the main cconsole game on the handheld, that sounds awesome. However, I'm sure we will see another Skyrim release to coincide.
I love my Steam Deck. Just such a sweet little box of joy.
Just got ally x, absolutely loving it. If Sony release handheld as powerful as ps5 pro, maybe I’ll consider getting it
Im kinda hoping sega gets back on the console handheld game to would be cool
i had the steam deck oled but upgraded to the ally x and i LOVE this thing
It takes a large console to Play Ps5 games to fit the GPU and cooling fans and Heat sink.
How will a handheld play Ps5 games?
At 480p/30fps?
I know its a thing now but I’ll never get used to hearing people reporting gaming news from bloomberg
companies "keeping up" is a good thing! competition is good for all of us!
eh, i typed that before you mentioned it lol
I'm personally on the retro handhelds rn, i might have time for more handhelds in the future now that i have kids...
Hope its like a replacement for the smaller version consoles like if they do a ps6 home console n handheld console when they come out
