It's a pain trying to get at the filter thru that tiny access hole. After struggling with it the first time, I decided to remove the skid plate for my 2nd oil change. It takes a few minutes extra, but it makes getting at the filter so much easier and prevents making a mess with oil leaking on top of the skid plate. There are 6 screws attaching the plastic air dam, 4 screws attaching the bumper assy to the skid plate, and 4 screws attaching the skid plate to the frame...14 screws total. It sounds like a lot, but it literally takes 5 minutes extra and made it much easier, imo.
Great video as always! I've always changed the oil in all of my vehicles, but I was spooked by the skid plate when I bought my Xterra and started having it done for me. I had no idea that all you had to do was remove the access panel, and there was a nice little chute for the oil from the filter! Thanks for doing what you do!

Lol, the "nice" oil pan through the access plate. Changing the oil on a Nissan Frontier is the biggest, messiest pain ever. That access port is made for someone with child's hands. The pan never catches all the oil. It's always a dripping, horrible mess. Worst design ever. Nissan engineer1: "Changing the oil will be the number one maintenance task for our end users. How can we make it as unpleasant as possible?" Nissan engineer2: "I've got it! We'll mount the oil filter horizontally." Nissan engineer1: "Great idea! That will ensure that oil always gets everywhere and drips randomly whenever the filter is removed." Nissan engineer2: "I'm not done. We'll make an access hole that's too small for anyone except a child to reach through, ensuring that a man's hand holding an oil filter will not be able to exit the hole while also allowing the oil to drain without a mess. The edges of the access hole will be razor sharp so that it's also painful to remove the oil filter. In addition, we'll install a pan ramp to give the owner hope that it will guide the oil in a controlled way while it drains, but we'll make the pan too narrow and too shallow to actually hold all the oil that drains out of the filter so that a mess is 100 percent ensured." Nissan engineer1: "G*ddamn it Johnson, you're a genius." Great video though.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that get's a little oil on the ground when taking the oil filter off. I'm seriously thinking of relocating the oil filter. I removed the factory oil drain plug with one that has a nob to open.
Ry - thanks for the clear video. My Xterra was due for its first oil change since I got it and your video helped me a lot! My only problem was that the filter didn’t fit through the access hole! Neither the old one nor the new one. I had to go in through the side to pull it out and it made quite the mess. Maybe others have had this problem too?

The only thing I'd do differently is to open the oil cap first before the drain plug. It's a good habit to have when you change any fluids to always make sure you can refill before draining or else you're out of luck!

+NYLA Honestly I think of spark plugs as a personal choice. In my opinion if you are not doing anything with your truck that puts extra strain on the motor then you will be more than ok using the Nissan recommended spark plug (NGK double platinum). Actually, I bought ever cheaper double platinum's from autolite because I bought my Xterra basically so I would have a project truck for youtube videos.

I bought a used '08 Xterra (6-speed 2wd manual) a couple years ago and its sitting just under 85,000 mi now and I'm starting to change Trans, rear dif fluids and probably get a coolant flush in near future for the first time. But I wanted to pick your brain about the brake and clutch fluid. I'm just not sure if it needs flushing and replacing. my biggest fear is running old\bad fluid. Any insight? Thanks so much man. It seems like it's recommended to replace the crush washer on the drain plug after every service, have you done this in later oil changes or has it not mattered? Trying to get everything I need to do this myself but am confused about whether it's required or not (I did order them anyway since they're cheap).

Also, in addition to adding the bit of oil via finger around the seal, I always pour a tiny bit of fresh oil into my brand new filter before installation. The point of adding the oil around the seal is that, among other things, it makes it easier to remove the next time you change your oil. Putting fresh oil into a fresh filter helps prime it. If this is bad advice, please tell me now, because I’ve had success with this for many years
No it's great. If you buy your filter from Nissan they usually just give you a crush washer along with it. The oil in the filter is good but ruining your engine without oil pressure for a couple seconds really shouldn't hurt anything. But pre-filling the filter can certainly only help.
I think my skid plate access cover thing was cross threaded because no matter how many times I tried to loosen it the bolts it would just turn without making any progress down. Was this with yours too,or is it a personal problem for me

I was looking through the owners manual and it says to use 5W30 ester blend motor oil (NISSAN recommends Genuine NISSAN Ester Oil). What is ester blend motor oil? Why can't I use full synthetic 5w30 oil instead? Or are they the same thing? Amazon says that the Valvoline full synthetic 5W30 is compatible with the 2014 Xterra while Walmart says it isn't.

Ry why are there a couple tiny (rusty) holes in each of my catalytic converters? I’m pretty sure they are the cat’s..someone said someone drilled holes but its hard to tell if its rusty eroded metal or not. Do yours have hole? Have an email or something?
Finally did the oil change and Carquest must bring a popular filter because that's the same filter that came off my Nissan also. I have a feeling the filter hasn't been changed in awhile though because of that...any thoughts?
+NYLA not really, car quest is a really popular "affordable" brand ;) its likely that whoever did it last just used that brand. Car quest is still around in a lot of areas of the country.
Unfortunately I cannot demonstrate that because my truck does not need it. It is not one of those things where you can do it when you don't need it. Sorry about that.
+Ashot Javakhyan if you mean you put diesel into you gas tank then you've got a big problem on your hands. You need to siphon the diesel out of the tank and flush your fuel lines. You should be able to get a manual siphon from a hardware store or auto shop. There are few ways to get diesel out of a fuel line but the easiest way (not the safest) would be to disconnect the fuel line from the fuel rail, stick it into a container, then try to start the motor. that should force the fuel out. Be extra careful and good luck. You will have to research this and get more information. I have never experienced it before. All I know is you really need to get that out of there.
Sad but it's easier to remove the entire skid plate to get at oil filter. I've sliced my arm up good trying to get at it through filter door. Ridiculous design! Plus the drain trough is just a weee bit better than nothing. Oil still slops around. Not a fan of dip stick on xterra either. It goes in at such a tight angle it feels like you're scraping flakes of metal off going down the tube. Makes it hard to get a accurate oil level read. Another terrible design.
I have a question I have a 2008 xterra with 106000 on it and after an oil change around 1500- 2000 miles the oil is low only has oil on the tip of the dip stick can't find any leaks what so ever and can't figure out where it's going
+Stan Walters do you have an automatic? If so you need to do a coolant flush and make sure that you don't have oil in your coolant. If so you have a lot of work to do.
ok good. Well You should check your coolant anyway. You don't need to do a full flush but you should make sure oil is not getting in there. You could have a bad head gasket. Are you having any over heating issues?
No actually it would lose heat when you came to a stop but once you got going again it would come back so I checked the radiator and filled it was quite low as well
Yes, your manual should show you the best weight for the temps you're going to be driving in. I think they say 10 weight should be good for most the year.
@@Rythecarguy Thanks. I discovered a drip-free way to remove the oil filter if the car is cold. After loosening the filter, wrap a plastic bag around the filter, past the point that it mates to the engine. Hold the bag in that position, around the filter as you are loosening it. Remove it, inside the bag but with the open end, up. Pull the bag with the filter out the side (passenger side) opening of the skid plate. Wipe the mounting point, on the block with a paper towel. Clean removal. In the same way, I use a large plastic bag over the oil pan. After pouring the dirty oil out of the pan, just gather up the oily bag, ball it up and toss it in the garbage. The pan is completely clean with no mess to clean up...... (This only works if the oil isn't hot. Hot oil could possible melt the bag)
You can -- but why would you ? Use only Full Synthetic on everything, Cars,Trucks,Lawn Mower,Snow Blower. I have used only Full Syn for 30 years,since it was first avail.

Ry the car guy I had an 06, years ago now, and I just took the skid plate off. After figuring out that little access hole wasn’t designed for my fat American wrist, I gave up trying.
I have to say this 16 minute video could be cut down to about 5 minutes. Ya got a lot of filler in there bro. That being said i ordered a nissan filter for my 2012 nissan (part# 15208-65f0e) and man does it seem like a tiny filter for a 4.0L engine. And it comes with this copper washer??? I assume its for the drain plug , but your drain plug didnt have one??? I will never understand why manufacturers put 1 time use washers on drain plugs. Old cars came with a metal drain plug and no stupid washer. Anyway I hope i got the right filter.

I let the filter drain and reach over the passenger side of the skid plate when the filter is tipped up. Then install through the filter access.
This comment is extremely underrated. I just got out from under my 2014 Xterra about an hour ago and said pretty much the same haha
Just remove the skid plate. It's a few more bolts, but makes the filter change a breeze and no mess. Might even take less time overall.

Please make sure your plug has a good gasket on it. It makes a huge difference. And they aren’t expensive or difficult to replace.

They say warming it up will help you drain more out when you change it. I usually change cold unless I am changing the type of oil I use.

You can drop the entire skip plate too. I think its about 6-8 bolts. But its not really heavy once you have it free.

Are you sure you don't have a leak? The liquid has to be going somewhere. Do you notice any smoke coming out of your exhaust when you drive?

Ry the car guy I had an 06, years ago now, and I just took the skid plate off. After figuring out that little access hole wasn’t designed for my fat American wrist, I gave up trying.
I have to say this 16 minute video could be cut down to about 5 minutes. Ya got a lot of filler in there bro. That being said i ordered a nissan filter for my 2012 nissan (part# 15208-65f0e) and man does it seem like a tiny filter for a 4.0L engine. And it comes with this copper washer??? I assume its for the drain plug , but your drain plug didnt have one??? I will never understand why manufacturers put 1 time use washers on drain plugs. Old cars came with a metal drain plug and no stupid washer. Anyway I hope i got the right filter.
yep just as i figured amazon recommended the wrong filter. the correct filter for a 05-15 xterra is a Nissan (15208-9E01A)
