Thanks. This was a great help. I've changed my oil for many years on a few different vehicles. My Nissan Frontier is new to me and I was having a little anxiety over trying to change the oil myself. Now I feel good about it!

Hi, I just did oil change on my frontier se after watching your video and I just wanted to say thank you. Everything explained perfectly. It was a bit*h for me to get to the filter at first (I'm a female you know, shorter hands, bigger chest 😂), but once I found my greep, it was good. Also, after I done it by myself now, I'll won't be going anywhere elsewhere. Because the way they tighten up the bolts is like they should never come off again. Btw, filter treatment, that's something I heard before and I think it's great advice.

Great video, thanks for sharing! A couple of additional tips, especially for the first-timers. Wipe the filter mounting surface on the engine and be sure there is no filter gasket present. You don't want to double gasket the new filter. It will leak like crazy!
Consider replacing the oil drain plug with a Fumoto valve (look it up). It eliminates the need to mess with the copper washer, it installs once so no worries about cross-threading, and your hands stay a whole lot cleaner. A big plus is that if you happen to over fill the crankcase, it's easy to drain a little oil at a time until you get the oil level where you want it.
Finally, after watching you struggle pouring the oil from your drain pan back into the empty oil jug made me remember why I replaced mine with one from the local Harley-Davidson dealer. The H-D drain pan is a large low-profile drain pan that holds about 8-10 quarts. It comes with screw on caps so you can easily trasport the used oil to the recycle center to pour in to their large holding containers. Believe me, it's a lot less messy. Trying to stay clean and neat is the hardest part of a DIY oil change!
Again, thanks for posting a well produced video!

couple things, i wouldn't pre-charge the oil filter just oil the seal and screw it on, let your oil pump charge it when you start it up. The 4.0L that you have is 5.4 quarts, the spec you gave of 4.9 is for the 2.5L. Good video overall.

You make this look wayyyyyyy easier than it is. As soon as I pulled off the access hatch for the oil filter and tried to reach up to the filter and found wires and hoses in the way I figured I'd be bumping into a bunch of stuff and knocking dirt onto the filter when putting the new one on since you can't really see when you're laying on the ground. Maybe if you're 6' 4" tall and 120lbs. with spaghetti noodles for arms it wouldn't be too bad to do it on the ground. I pulled it over my pit and did it how I do all of my other vehicles. I had a bunch of stuff I needed to move to get to my pit so I wanted to try it this way since you made it look so easy. No thanks!!! Plus it's a 10mm bolt for the hatch, not 8mm.

Its good to learn. I learned about the filter cover and its drainage pan. I will note you didn't wipe clean the filter mating surface on the engine. And slightly lube it as well with clean oil. Also when you fill the oil, check and clean the filling valve cover surfaces first along with the filling cap surfaces as well. You don't want dust n crap falling into the filling port while you are filling up the oil. A Quick looksee and wipe solves than issue. The dip stick removal technique is good since its a very unique dip stick. But the initial insertion position of entire stick is vague. I'm glad you went through oil change though.

@@hawasttimelikewater I got lucky with mine regarding price.... I bought mine used from a local dealer in 2019. Truck was 3 years old with about 26k on it and in very good condition. I purchased it for under 22k (no typo)... It's a 4-door 4X4....exactly what i wanted. Parked right next to it was a a nearly identical truck, except it was a 2015 and had 50k-something on the odo, BUT it was an automatic..... As i recall, they were charging about $10k MORE for that truck!! I lucked out because i was searching for a manual, and on the used market, you usually hafta drive 3 or 4 states over to find one, so i grabbed it when it came up in my searches.
Moral of the story: get a stick. Not only are they cheaper and more fun to drive, IMO, they're the best anti-theft/anti-carjacking device out there because i'm willing to bet most of these thugs don't even know what a stick is and will abandon the vehicle in no time.

One place wanted 22,000 for 100,000 miles on the tundra and it had was in an accident. The markets not good. Wish my other truck would of held up threw this bullshit.

When my previous truck, a Ford Sport-trac 4X4, started to nickel and dime me after 140k miles, i started searching... I was hoping to get the new Ranger (yes, i'm actually a Ford guy).... When they finally came out (why they discontinued them in the States is a mystery to me), i checked them out and it wasn't what i wanted, plus they were around $40-$45k new....NO THANKS!! The Frontier was the only remaining truck that was still reasonably priced....new or used. All other were ripoffs back then.

So I’ve been doing this myself for a few years now but one thing I noticed that has me somewhat nervous is underneath the drip pan where that plastic access panel for the oil filter is with the 2 bolts securing it is literally nonexistent on my 2012 SV 4.0 v6 model. Like it almost seems like the truck was purposely built without that part completely because it’s not just like a hole and the cover is missing, the whole section right there is missing so when replacing the filter it goes straight from on the drip pan then to the ground. I honestly would have never thought twice about it until I saw your video since it has never caused any issue of any kind but now I’m second guessing If there is some unknown reason to me that I should be be concerned. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on this subject whatsoever. Also curious if this is something that anyone else has noticed/encountered. I am a little OCD about making sure everything on my truck at least exceeds the recommendations for every part when the time comes that it requires maintenance because I intend on trying to get it to over 200k miles and it’s at 125k now lol

Caterpillar corporation has published a service bulletin that advice is not to pre-fill filters because of filter collapse caused by the suction of the pump whether fuel pump or oil pump trying to fill that filter. A caterpillar mechanic that I speak to at work suggest that ,that is good advice for all engines and filters.

But it’s scary when they start going out. The truck will just shut off randomly, possibly while you’re driving. But it always restarted afterwards. Other than that I haven’t had any issues with the power train. The interior has held up really well. So has the paint.

LOL! Unfortunately, I'm only 5'8" with regular arms.. hahaha... To reach the filter from the wheel area, I lay on the ground and slide myself under the truck a little bit. I end up with my head in the wheel well area and my legs kinda sticking out from under the front bumper.. I don't think you can do it standing from the side of the truck. Alternatively, you could reach in from the front bumper drain opening in the plastic underbody panel. That'll probably result in a little bit of oil on your arm though. Thanks for the feedback!

@@DIYMechanic57 I jacked the passenger side up a bit, didn’t even need to get the wheels off the ground. Just needed the frame a little higher so I could reach in there. Maybe yours sits a little higher or something idk but it was giving me trouble at first. Helpful vid nevertheless.

For me it was a real paid because of the oil filter and not being able to get my right hand on it. On a lift I can see how it would be an easy job. Poor design for maintenance. but a good video.

You don't need to remove the access panel to remove the filter. Get at it from the open area in the wheel-well. Also, no no no. You want the oil to read at the top mark on the dipstick... Why underfill it? I always slightly overfill it. The more capacity the better. Check your level after letting the truck sit for a few hours. Add until you reach the top marking.

True but I find it easier to go thru the panel to remove it, but I do go thru the wheel well to put the new filter on.

Wrong. The 4.0 takes 5.7 quarts. You’ve been starving your engine.

I always check the dipstick to make sure it’s in range. That’s what I would recommend to anyone.
