  • Maryborough is a historic gold mining town located on the Pyrenees Highway, 58 kilometres north of Ballarat and 168 kilometres northwest of Melbourne.
The first Europeans to settle in the region were the Simson brothers, who established a sheep station, known as Charlotte Plains, in 1840.
In 1854, gold was discovered at White Hill, attracting a rush of prospectors to the area.
The settlement, originally known as 'Simsons', was renamed 'Maryborough' by Gold Commissioner James Daly, after his Irish birthplace.
The following year the Tipperary Riots took place between Irish prospectors and other groups, leading to the formation of the Maryborough Mutual Protection Society.
Surface nuggets continued to be found in the area, encouraging alluvial prospecting, and in 1855 a 32-kilogram nugget was discovered. Reef mining began in the late 1850s. At the peak of Maryborough’s gold rush, it reportedly had a population of up to 50,000.
By the turn of the century gold mining was decreasing and population growth stabilised.
The last gold mine in Maryborough closed in 1918.
Today, Maryborough boasts grand gold rush architecture - the Railway Station, Court House, Town Hall, Post Office and Old Fire Station, which display the fine workmanship of a bygone era. The Maryborough Railway station is a particularly impressive example.
Maryborough is part of 'The Golden Triangle' and is a short drive from other historic goldfields towns such as Moliagul, where the famous 69-kilogram Welcome Stranger Nugget was found and Dunolly, home of the Goldfields Museum which has a fantastic collection of gold rush relics.
Don’t forget your detector, when visiting Maryborough, as the area has many accessible goldfields with many prospectors having success to this day.
Doug Stone’s Maryborough Goldfield’s map and John Tully’s Maryborough maps provide excellent resources for researching the region.

Maybe just maybe the gentleman standing alongside the nugget being suggested as the Welcome Stranger Nugget is standing alongside a mass of gold and quartz discovered at Hill End NSW in 1872.

History is a wonderful thing but should not be tampered with. Perhaps you may look at the party photographed with the alleged Welcome Stranger and
compare the two nuggets along with the history of the Welcome Stranger Nugget which history suggests was never photographed.
