Wow, I wish this was around in the late 70s/early 80s. It took me months to cross reference areas from historical documents for nugget locations against geological maps until someone told me that the old records used Parish names for locations. Seeing your diggings overlays took me straight back. To the point I may start doing detecting again, but I am not sure if I can endure that digging though the HARD soil in central Vic. LOL
I know it's over a year old, but thanks for the tutorial. Very detailed, and can run/pause/replay this on one monitor, while I fumble about on the map. It appears to have changed a little, but that's just a matter of checking all the menus to see what they have added. For a fairly complicated setup, I have a good working knowledge in under half an hour. Some heroes don't wear capes (just assuming that you don't). Cheers!
Great info thank you! I'll be visiting Australia in March 2019 for some gold prospecting videos and this is info will help me find places to swing the detector.
G'day Aussie Bloke, thanks for the video, when I first tried to use that website it made no sense, but now your video has been a great help to work it out, cheers.
thank you for the tutorial it is great, found the Earth Resources site a while back but found it limited value but now having seen how to drive it, whole different world. Good one Aussie bloke
Brilliant video that mate, it's quite similar to NTStrike, but with a lot more information. We're probably posting Brisvegas this year and will definitely be planning a few weeks in Vic in 2022.
You mentioned that the shallow workings you selected in your example was a good pick because it had a reef nearby. How does a reef mean good shallow leads, and how close does the reef need to be?
Great question mate. Shallow Alluvial leads were in most cases a direct result of reefs in close proximity shedding and eroding over time. In fact, virtually every reef the Old timers found, was found by following the alluvial runs to the source. I would say that any ground that has alluvial diggings and reef mines within a hundred meters or so of those diggings would be a great place to start. Regards Aussie
Love the video. Just noticed though when I search north east victoria like Mitta area that the leads and working details don't come up...or am I doing something wrong. The coloured areas don't appear.
Good video. I like to make sure my Layers are in the correct order, so that everything is visible. In the video, the Public Land Management layer was sitting above the Watercourses layer - this meant that the watercourses were not visible in any of the coloured crown land areas. I always put the Public Land Management layer at the bottom.
Great video I have just got intrested in prosepcting. Never done a day of it in my life. But I'm learning a lot off your videos. Can't wait to move back to oz and go out and enjoy what your teaching. Is there something like this to find areas in Queensland? I have seen your western Australia videos and now victory. Thanks
Hi Alan, thanks for a very informative video. A couple of steps in the video were a bit quick, hence the following questions. How did you take a snap shot of the co-ordinates and how did you move from the geovic screen to the paste screen? Tony
Hi Alan, disregard my questions. I was able to print prospecting locations with co-ordinates using geovic web page. It was just a matter of playing with their software to learn how to download the info. Thanks again for the video. Tony
G'day Tony, firstly, my name is not Alan... Not quite sure how you came to that conclusion. Secondly, taking a screen shot comes down to basic computing skills... Something I don't cover in detail as this info is readily available on Google or any number of PC forums. Most PCs and Laptops have this function and can be found out reading the manual. Most image programs like "paint" will accept screen shots... Again... Read the help files on them to find out how to import your screen shot. Regards Aussie
Hi Dan, I'm puzzeled as well as to how I got your name wrong. Apologies extended. It was paint that I initially had trouble getting into from geovic, but all is good now. Great videos, keep up the good work. Tony
Not sure if this is available to registered users only. But there are options to add GPS Coords to any spot you click on the map, you can also add balloon comments which are easier to see and read, the caveat with the last option is you have to first click on the spot you want, write down the coords, then click to where you want the balloon to be, enter coords and click ok. Bit fiddly but once you get used to it, it's easy
Just a quick one for you, is there any way to download the information to google earth (like the KML files exported from Tengraph). Cheers for the help mate.
Cheers and excellent question. Shallow workings are indicative of alluvial and or shallow reef gold close to the surface, and as such are commonly found in the vicinity of shallow leads, and often follow such leads in a distinctive line. So a lead is a shallow run of alluvial gold, whereas shallow workings are the result of the mining activities engaged in order to work such leads. Hope that helps. Regards Aussie
Awesome. I was just curious because I've been working from some maps by Stephen Barnham and some locations recommended only show up as shallow leads on GeoVic. Actually as I'm writing this i've just popped across to double check what I'm talking about and i've noticed that north of Avoca and Maryborough there is no shallow workings on GeoVic, only shallow leads. I'm guessing thats not right?
You are correct; whilst Maryborough and other areas where famous for rich Deep leads, there are in fact many locations in those areas where there are shallow workings. For every mine or lead shown on GeoVic, there is usually 10 that aren't. Whilst GeoVic is a fantastic tool, it is not exhaustive and only represents notable or major occurrences and workings. A quick walk on the ground in the vicinity of the shallow leads shown, will reveal where the shallow workings were in those areas. Regards Aussie
Hello i used the 1860s _1952 expired Mines and leases layer to Mark locations for metal detecting am I on the right track mate ? Thanks for the video has helped me navigate the website a lot better
Absolutely on the right track mate. Any bit of info you can get may just be the "right bit". Good to see you are researching thoroughly. It WILL pay off. Good Luck. Regards Aussie
Great video, just a quick question when you look at the crown land shaded in grey and it has a number on it for eg P105888 what does the number stand for?
To be honest, not quite sure..haven't looked that deep into it. Could be a Prospecting lease number, but most likely a State Forest compartment number. Regards Aussie
Wow mind blowing hardcore information, This will def come handy when i hopefully soon can head out to Victoria, at the moment as a Swede am stuck in Sweden due to this Covid-19. Are you from Victoria? would be more than awesome to catch up with you over a few beers when i get there, Once again THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this valuable information. Stay Safe and may the prospecting gods be with you. Best Regards Jimmy The Swede.
You're very welcome mate. I am in NSW, but can and often do travel to VIC... who knows... maybe we will bump into each other out there... Regards Aussie
Hi champion is there plenty off gold out there to find great video I want to try and get my son out there to do something different than play playstation The new generation worries me mate great video champion
just subscribed.like your vids.I want to watch all your vids to learn over the next while.I just started MD about 20 hours but I would like to incorporate gold hunting too.How can I use your info for Southern Alberta. It seems like our provincial government is not releasing acceptable Geo information. I understand if you do not have time to help a newbie...no worries eh I will keep researching.
Gold prospecting principles are the same wherever you are in the world mate. keep researching and find a place near you where the Old Timers found gold..that's always the best place to start. You can employ the same alluvial techniques in your part of the world that I use in Australia. Good Luck. Regards Aussie
Thanks Man.The stories are no gold here.North to Saskatchewan River and West into British Columbia called The Caribou. The alberta government Topographical, soil and mineral conveniently hold back the mineral deposits. Thanks again.I will keep digging and study your vids for more clues.
Awesome very informative, NZ has a Crown minerals site but you need to but a prospector licence before you can do a thing. In short take the Gamble. or prospect illegally
just been playing with this. The area I have been panning with clear obvious shallow alluvial workings from the old guys does not show on the map. Its good for me so not many people can find it haha
For every mine, deposit, occurrence and area of workings shown on GeoVic, there are probably 10 that are not. The shown ones are great for initial research and investigation and putting you on likely ground. Once on the ground, only footwork will reveal the true extent of previous mining activity. Follow the Tutorial and Zoom in on NE VIC. Make sure you add the Crown Lands info as shown in the vid. Generally speaking, most State forest in VIC, you are able to prospect in, and in the case of some national parks you are permitted to prospect. Some local councils, like Yack do have exclusion zones. The onus is up to you to check with local State forest and National Parks offices in each region. Also a good place to check the local Information Centre at each town. Regards
It seems like GeoVic has changed the website a bit but this video makes it a LOT easier to understand. Thanks Aussie Bloke!
Yep..it has a bit. You're welcome mate. Regards Aussie
Thanks so much for sharing! Bought my first metal detector two days ago. Spent about 6 hours digging trash so far 🤦♂️.

Thanks for the video. very useful, geovic has changed a few things. You just need to do some searching for the things you want.
So to pan or use a metal detector in crown lands is legal without a permit?
Does the government take a cut too?

Follow the Tutorial and Zoom in on NE VIC. Make sure you add the Crown Lands info as shown in the vid. Generally speaking, most State forest in VIC, you are able to prospect in, and in the case of some national parks you are permitted to prospect. Some local councils, like Yack do have exclusion zones. The onus is up to you to check with local State forest and National Parks offices in each region.
