Gold Hot Spots of Australia - Eaglehawk, Victoria

Eaglehawk is a former gold-mining town in Central Victoria, located approximately 6 kilometres northwest of Bendigo and 157 kilometres north of Melbourne.
The region is a popular destination for many prospectors due to the rich Whipstick goldfields nearby.
Following the discovery of gold at Sandhurst in October 1851, Joseph Cook discovered a gold nugget whilst hunting stray horses in the area in which Eaglehawk stands today.
This discovery sparked a gold rush, which led to the establishment of the township in 1852.
The population expanded quickly.
During the rush, there were up to 40,000 people in the area.
The Borough of Eaglehawk was established in 1862 and the nearby township of California Gully shortly after.
By 1893, the alluvial gold was exhausted and reef mines were established.
These mines saw 300 tonnes of gold extracted.
Most of the mines had closed by the 1890s, although there were periods of renewed activity until the 1950s.
In 1994 the Borough of Eaglehawk was amalgamated by the Victorian Government with four other councils to become the City of Greater Bendigo.
Today, Eaglehawk has a population of around 6,000 and a proud community culture that supports a history of local sporting clubs and events.
Enjoy a walk along the street amongst the historic buildings, visit the local stores or stop by and pick up lunch from the bakery on your way to the nearby goldfields.
The nearby Whipstick goldfields consist of the Eaglehawk Regional Park, the Whipstick State Park, and the Bendigo National Park.
The total area available for prospecting is well over 3,200 hectares.
