Now I once remortgaged my house to buy a vehicle. But it was under $30K, and I had other home repairs in there also. Paid it off in 8 years. Some of the truck prices aren’t at prices of houses 25 years ago, but in certain areas it’s a house today. New houses near me start in the $200K range.
In some ways, people really did take out mortgages to buy automobiles. Many refinanced their homes with cash out or got home equity lines of credit and used that for big down payments or to purchase outright. Now, homes aren't going up in value to allow that, plus the interest rates are much higher.
It's wild when I think about my dad buying a nice, large 4-bedroom brick house in a good/safe middle-class neighborhood for around $40K back in 1978. Less than the typical car being bought today. 🤣
When I turned my MBE300 lease in 2 years ago they wanted an extra 5k on top of my lease payment 679/month. I had a 20 yr relationship with them. I drew the line told them i would buy a Camry for under that 5k before i gave them 5k..I dropped the lease off with my 04 Camry XLE V6 W/167K that i still have and they couldnt believe it. Im glad i did cause we now in a buyers market..Im just north of Boston. Now im patient waiting on right car at my price
No standard full size truck, regardless of features, is worth more than 55K tax, title, tag, fees, umbrella insurance and all and no midsize worth over 40K.
My friend just got a 2024 Toyota Sequoia , he told me with a trade in , his payment are 1300.00 a month, another guy has 1900 month on 2024 ford f450 dually. I thought my payments of 395 a month were rough, I guess that not a big deal. Gotta buy used, won’t catch this guy buying new. Premium over invoice and lower interest rates two years ago or 9% interest at invoice now it’s basically the same thing. Gone are the days of low interest and reasonable prices I’m tapping out they can keep their high price metal I’ll wait until they really need to sell.

Not sure how people are going about It now but keep in mind that 2019-22 a lot of people were using non auto loan lenders (personal loans) like lightstream and getting 4-9% apr with a clear title after purchase because of no collateral. They were able to stretch It out out to 144 months (12 years!) in the US. A similar loan to the 3500 truck you mentioned with today’s interest rates but at 144 months is still equal to what people pay for mid sized trucks monthly on 72 month loans today. I know not everyone does that and I’m by no means saying it’s smart but, I know people who did It.

You have pay all those things before even getting to the principal of the car. Got the engine almost two years ago and still dont regret it. Mind you two years ago is when the markup fever was at an all time high. A lot of 2022s are getting repoed right now.
I see a new business model in the works where that new business refurbished old cars to new like condition and charged a BIGGER premium than a used car with a BETTER WARRANTY. Why? Because the gap between used and new is too close. A cheap used car and a few $1,000's you can refurbish a $3,000 with today's technology fast and easy. Try looking at a premium AFTER MARKET radio. That radio alone has EVERY feature a new car. Rear Abs front view camera, front, and rear side proximity sensors, phone interface, GPS, large 4k screens, and much more.
We just got a 2024 kia soul full bumper to bumper warranty maintenance package tax tag 26k 200 over msrp..we paid cash...they said 33k wife just got up and walked out i followed we did not make it to door before lwts see what we can do ..we drove off for 26k flat.
The most I paid for a car was $23K. I paid the loan off in 11 months back in 2016. My other car a 2010 Outback 3.6R I paid 9200 all in October 2019 and it had 140K. Now it is 194K and still runs like new. No car payment is nice. Edit it should be 20% + TTL as a down payment.
2nd mortgages or cash out refinances are other ways that people can use mortgages to buy vehicles.........but the idea of taking 15 or 30 years to pay off a car loan is just nuts.

You should never make a payment on a vehicle. Pay cash for what you can afford. There are a lot of older reliable cars out there.

Modern trucks can’t last longer than 6-7 years. They are all junk. I paid 15 years on a boat and they hold together very well. Cars? Heck no.

Schwazoolee...I'm 71 and have never heard that one before...it's funny! I'm amazed that the truck manufacturers made so many trucks ahead of time...in abundance and with ridiculous prices! That seems pretty stupid, arrogant, and careless. They will get what they deserve.
