Not in a mean way but it helped to see you make a mistake - and then correct it and carry on - often if I make a mistake I just want to abandon the project! Just made a button down using another tutorial and the collar stressed me out so much that my project is still sitting there 85% finished. Excited for this!
After searching through a million shirt patterns this one appears to be exactly what I want. However, would a thin, stretch knit be suitable for this? I have 2 yards of the most beautiful fabric and want to make this blouse. Do you think that would be okay?
Oh my Lord, I have to tell you....I just made my first Byrdie Button Up and I absolutely LOVE it...The fit is amazing, it looks so much more feminine than most of the other button up blouses out there...the techniques for putting it together are easy. I seriously love this blouse. I have more linen coming in light pink, pale yellow and fuchsia...I've gone Byrdie Bonkers....thanks so much for this pattern...I'm starting on my second blouse with my left over white linen....LOVE IT !!!
Oh my gosh this makes my day! I'm so glad!! I wear my white Byrdie non-stop, especially in the warmer months...it might be time to dye it another color because it's getting a little "off-white" haha. Thanks so much for letting me know you've enjoyed the pattern!
You're very welcome. I have probably made garments from at least 10 or 12 Indie patterns and you are seriously talented and seem to have an amazing fashion sense. To me it seems it's hard enough putting together a pattern to sew, it's also being able to visualize how it's going to look on you, as well as how flattering it's going to fit. I cannot tell you how many button up shirts I've tried and have never gotten obsessed over any of them ...until the Byrdie...I think once everyone sees how well thought out the Byrdie is and how nice it looks and how figure flattering it is...you are going to be swamped with orders.... dye your Byrdie a light blue...lol...I'm starting on my 3rd one now and it's the fuchsia linen...lol..I'm getting ready for summer.

A hint to get a very sharp corner instead of pivoting is to actually do one diagonal stitch at the corner so that when you turn the collar the fabric pushes slightly through the diagonal stitch to make a very sharp point. I use the roll back method you used on the collar stand for waistbands too. I worked in the garment industry for many years but I learn something new all the time. Your tape method for buttons is genius!!
I've made myself three of these in cotton - two with long sleeves and one with a cap sleeve version. Now that it's officially fall, my weekend project is to make a pair of shirts in cotton flannel (one is a gift for my sister.) I'm really excited to try this, I think they're going to turn out really well!

You can do it! :) You can slow down the video if you need to by clicking on the little gear icon at the bottom of the video and adjusting the playback speed. Wow. I love it when I run across something I haven't seen before. And I've not seen the collar technique you're using. Love the "burrito technique" on the ends of the collar stand. brilliant! was worth watching the whole vid just to see that. Takes a lot of the difficulty out of getting the collar and stand stitching as perfect as possible.

Awesome. I have been trying to perfect my shirts and they still don't fit in the arms. Tight to button. I made 3 so far ugh. . It's my attempt at my own pattern. I think I need to buy a pattern to get the arm sythe proper. So glad I found your site.
thanks so much for the video! I was not using your pattern, made one myself but your instructions are great and clear even though this was my first button-down shirt. I was having issues with this collar method and ended up going the other way around: attached collar to both halves of the stand first and then to the body. will try again next time and make the collar slightly smaller, that might have been my issue
Well sweetherart i have not got this shirt sewed yet, but i am working so hard but i canot get it right . I hope you don't take it off the air until i get it made. You have a good one and i hope i can get this blouse done befotre you go off. I have never had this kind of trouble before because I have made this blouse and had no trouble sewinf it , but now that i am older i guess that is why. Have a good one. love watching all of your video , I just had a suggestion to make to you I think that it would be a good ideas to do this shirt sew along in dark fabric because it would show up better on what your are doing and it easy to follower you okay.
Yes that is a good suggestion! I really want to eventually redo this tutorial (I filmed this when I was first starting out and my equipment and lighting was not great...plus the white fabric). It's definitely on my todo list :) Thanks so much for watching my videos!

I can't wait to try your tips because I always feel like my collars lack shape and crispness. -- especially on the shirts I have made for myself The one's I've made for my husband using the men's mimi g pattern seem to be fine. Probable because of the collar stand insert on the back side. Your technique also looks like less chance of the collar stand looking different on each side :)) Also tend to use my scissors to poke out points.
Request: Stacy, could you please make a video on how to attach a collar stand to a shirt. The collar stand on the Byrdie Button Up was incredibly hard for me. The area around the shoulder seams kept getting bunched up and I'd end up sewing little pleats into it no matter how many times I started over. Help!
I love this tutorial! So logically explained, thank you. One question remains for me : if I would make it a dress should I just lengthen the side seam straight on or must I widen it? No A-line skirt.
I'm so glad! I would suggest widening it enough to give yourself at least 4 inches of ease in the hips for it to hang well and be comfortable for walking and sitting.

Looks nice! What kind of tape did you use? Was it just regular scotch c-thru tape? The collar was especially helpful. I always mess that up. Thanks for the tut!

Just curious, why is "Byrdie" the name of the shirt? Just finished the linen version, much much much easier!!! The first one I sewed was made from a bed sheet I used as a muslin. The final version looks smashing. It helps to use quality fabric.

Thanks Danielle! I am also tall (with long arms...the struggle is real!) and this pattern is drafted on the tall side, so the sleeves might work for you as is! I usually have to lengthen sleeves by about an inch or so, but these are just right for me. I do also wear them rolled up most of the time, though, I just like the feel! Haha
Hello Casey. I have been on your pattern scout homepage for the byrdie pattern and read that the bust dart is optional. But if I would sew the shirt without dart the back and front would not fit together? Or do you give two different patterns for the byrdie? Besides the dress of course.
The pattern is available with different cup sizes/dart options depending on the bust size you need. The dart can be eliminated on the B cup version, and the hemline of the front bodice will just need to be adjusted slightly to match the back bodice. Hope that helps!

I'll add this to my list of projects, except without the pockets. I don't know why almost every button-down shirt I come across had to have bust pockets! I can't stand them!!
Great tutorial and I love the fabric, but the sake of beginners - a one-sided fabric would've made it easier to follow. With both side white, it's hard to see the 'right' side and the 'wrong' side... but that's only a teeny whinge 🙂 thanks!

Question…how experienced do you think someone should be to attempt this? I have very basic sewing skills and have perfected easy mask sewing but have never seen anything else other than a pair of shorts 🤔
I think it just depends on how much patience you have for the details :) If you can sew a mask, I think you can sew a shirt--just takes longer and a little more perseverance! haha. But you can do it!

I've been sewing for 50 years and do very high end stuff, I do vintage clothing restoration and design my own. About 3 years ago I discovered this video when I was hired to make really meticulous men's shirts for a client. Anyway, I was blown out of the water when I found this technique for turning collar points and I KNOW you will want to learn it. Too much white. I cannot see what you are doing. Create some contrast. White shirt on white cutting board with white thread is like watching a video in a snow storm.
Hold it.... The button placket foldover to the FRONT doesn't work for me with a print.... And that collar??? I've watched it now a few times, am I missing something??? Under collar part of the collar is the interfacing free one? I've ALWAYS interfaced the underside....whaaat? And left the upper un-interfaced... Sooooo I'VE BEEN DOING IT WRONG 4EVER???? I can't believe it. Your method...."the lower un-interfaced collar is cut shorter by ⅛ on the short side??? Than the upper interfaced collar??? Have I got that right??? And you've left the collar stand un-interfaced??? But the juncture were the stand meets the placket is a game changer.. I'll have to give that a try.
This is just ONE way of doing a shirt placket and collar, so I'm not implying another way is WRONG lol. Just trying new things, experimenting with techniques and sharing the ones I like. I'm actually wearing this shirt right now, still one of my faves! Thanks for watching!
@@PatternScout will I'll definitely do the collar backwards to the way I generally do it for the last 50yrs. I even went in the closet and dragged out RTW button downs of my husband and mine. And actually read some of my shirt patterns instructions....I can't believe the interfaced collar is the upper collar not the lower one. I must have just assumed forever that the interfaced was under instead of over. And never bothered to actually read any instructions about collars since. This has blown me away that I've been doing it wrong all this time and I can't even count the collars I've sewn over the many many years doooooiiiiii. 🤪 Thanks for the sew along. 👍
the tutorial goes too quickly. you did not explain clearly how to do a french seam. it would have helped if you used contrasting thread to see the process better

Technically a button-up unless you put button holes on the collar to “button down” the collar.

thanks so much for the video! I was not using your pattern, made one myself but your instructions are great and clear even though this was my first button-down shirt. I was having issues with this collar method and ended up going the other way around: attached collar to both halves of the stand first and then to the body. will try again next time and make the collar slightly smaller, that might have been my issue

love watching all of your video , I just had a suggestion to make to you I think that it would be a good ideas to do this shirt sew along in dark fabric because it would show up better on what your are doing and it easy to follower you okay.

Thanks for the great tutorial!! I can't wait to try your tips because I always feel like my collars lack shape and crispness. -- especially on the shirts I have made for myself The one's I've made for my husband using the men's mimi g pattern seem to be fine. Probable because of the collar stand insert on the back side. Your technique also looks like less chance of the collar stand looking different on each side :)) Also tend to use my scissors to poke out points.

Request: Stacy, could you please make a video on how to attach a collar stand to a shirt. The collar stand on the Byrdie Button Up was incredibly hard for me. The area around the shoulder seams kept getting bunched up and I'd end up sewing little pleats into it no matter how many times I started over. Help!

I love this tutorial! So logically explained, thank you. One question remains for me : if I would make it a dress should I just lengthen the side seam straight on or must I widen it? No A-line skirt.
I'm so glad! I would suggest widening it enough to give yourself at least 4 inches of ease in the hips for it to hang well and be comfortable for walking and sitting.

Not sure what happened but my collar stand and collar were what to short.? Double checked my cut, it was right. What did I do wrong?
Just curious, why is "Byrdie" the name of the shirt? Just finished the linen version, much much much easier!!! The first one I sewed was made from a bed sheet I used as a muslin. The final version looks smashing. It helps to use quality fabric.

Fantastic video! I have the white linen already so definitely will be picking the pattern up soon. I’m also tall and noticed you didn’t extend the sleeve length at all, is that because you mainly wear it with sleeves rolled up? Thanks for the great sew along!
Thanks Danielle! I am also tall (with long arms...the struggle is real!) and this pattern is drafted on the tall side, so the sleeves might work for you as is! I usually have to lengthen sleeves by about an inch or so, but these are just right for me. I do also wear them rolled up most of the time, though, I just like the feel! Haha

Hello Casey. I have been on your pattern scout homepage for the byrdie pattern and read that the bust dart is optional. But if I would sew the shirt without dart the back and front would not fit together? Or do you give two different patterns for the byrdie? Besides the dress of course.
The pattern is available with different cup sizes/dart options depending on the bust size you need. The dart can be eliminated on the B cup version, and the hemline of the front bodice will just need to be adjusted slightly to match the back bodice. Hope that helps!

Hello I’m excited and just received a pdf copy for the this cool button down blouse. However, I’m reaching out to my sewing community who has also ordered this pdf to see if I’m over looking where the link is to print it. I’m so apologize but this is my first pdf pattern ever, and I’m just not too familiar on where I would print it out. What I have opened from the pdf is The Table of Content, but I just don’t see where I can print the pattern out. If anyone can please help me I so appreciate it, thank you.
Hey there! The downloads include specific files for printing at home (Letter/A4) or with a copyshop and they are noted in the file names. And the files are separated depending on your cup size, so you'll just print the ones for your cup size. The instructions file is a separate file from the pattern files. Hope that helps! I'll add this to my list of projects, except without the pockets. I don't know why almost every button-down shirt I come across had to have bust pockets! I can't stand them!!
I think the pockets shall hide the breast and breasttips if the material is a little bit shining through?
Great tutorial and I love the fabric, but the sake of beginners - a one-sided fabric would've made it easier to follow. With both side white, it's hard to see the 'right' side and the 'wrong' side... but that's only a teeny whinge 🙂 thanks!

Question…how experienced do you think someone should be to attempt this? I have very basic sewing skills and have perfected easy mask sewing but have never seen anything else other than a pair of shorts 🤔
I think it just depends on how much patience you have for the details :) If you can sew a mask, I think you can sew a shirt--just takes longer and a little more perseverance! haha. But you can do it!

I've been sewing for 50 years and do very high end stuff, I do vintage clothing restoration and design my own. About 3 years ago I discovered this video when I was hired to make really meticulous men's shirts for a client. Anyway, I was blown out of the water when I found this technique for turning collar points and I KNOW you will want to learn it. I subscribed since I was so happy to see a young woman with really good skills and engineering creativity. It begins at 2:30 for the points turning technique. Sew on and on and on!

And that collar??? I've watched it now a few times, am I missing something??? Under collar part of the collar is the interfacing free one? I've ALWAYS interfaced the underside....whaaat?
And left the upper un-interfaced... Sooooo I'VE BEEN DOING IT WRONG 4EVER???? I can't believe it.
Your method...."the lower un-interfaced collar is cut shorter by ⅛ on the short side??? Than the upper interfaced collar???

And you've left the collar stand un-interfaced???
But the juncture were the stand meets the placket is a game changer.. I'll have to give that a try.
This is just ONE way of doing a shirt placket and collar, so I'm not implying another way is WRONG lol. Just trying new things, experimenting with techniques and sharing the ones I like. I'm actually wearing this shirt right now, still one of my faves! Thanks for watching!
@@PatternScout will I'll definitely do the collar backwards to the way I generally do it for the last 50yrs. I even went in the closet and dragged out RTW button downs of my husband and mine. And actually read some of my shirt patterns instructions....I can't believe the interfaced collar is the upper collar not the lower one. I must have just assumed forever that the interfaced was under instead of over. And never bothered to actually read any instructions about collars since. This has blown me away that I've been doing it wrong all this time and I can't even count the collars I've sewn over the many many years doooooiiiiii. 🤪

the tutorial goes too quickly. you did not explain clearly how to do a french seam. it would have helped if you used contrasting thread to see the process better
