    Man, I just realized that after nearly 40 years of Foxbody ownership, I am absolutely full of stories. I still drive my '93 Notch almost daily and I chuckle at the status these cars have in the minds of some young people. To me a Fox is a simple, rugged economy car stuffed with pickup truck engine. It's an overachiever in the "bang for the buck" category. To the kids at the local drive thru, this thing is a Hemi 'Cuda. The irony here is that when I was their age, I wanted an old musclecar in the worst way. Little did I know that I would purchase my old musclecar when it was brand new, off the dealer lot. High school dream achieved.

      Haha absolutely. As a fox owner since 91 I know exactly what you’re talking about. These things were cheap, belly button cars (everyone had one) that were a dime a dozen. Now you never see them on the roads day to day. When you do it’s usually a pos. So when I drive my immaculate electric red 93 LX people lose their minds. I have a grabber blue 13 GT that’s makes 1100hp and people barely blink at it in comparison to my 93.

      Yeah same thing happened with me. I bought a ragged out SN95 5.0 and fixed it up. Got really frustrated when I found out I had to replace the core support. I’ve never welded anything every, but I learned! Ended up selling it for more than half what I had in it and put a down payment on a 2018 royal crimson gt performance pack with black leather Recaro seats and a digital gauge cluster. It’s a 6 speed manual and I’ve heard bad things about them, but so far it’s held up like a champ!!

    I used to own a 1997 mustang, loved every second of driving it. Even though it didn’t have the smoothest ride, things would cling every time after going over a pot hole, the power steering whined I still liked it. After I drove a 2006 vw Jetta and Ford Focus. The ride was way smoother than the mustang but I still liked the mustang. So me personally I like older cars like yeah newer has more luxury and power but to me I’d pick an older car over a newer one any day.

    It almost sounds like you are talking about a daily driver. My Fox is my hobby car. Example, if I was buying a Porsche I would buy an older one any day over a new one. The same for a Mustang. A new one is a dime a dozen. The older ones are with character. However, if I was buying a daily driver, I would buy a newer F150 with a Coyote Motor, which I have because it is more practical, but my push rod 5.0 Fox Mustang sounds so much better! Thanks

    As a long time Foxbody owner (got my first one in 1984) I would like to stress one thing only touched upon in this video. If you are going to own an old car, any old car, you had better be mechanically inclined and ready to "embrace the suck" or have a big bank account. When you own an old car, you will find that as soon as you fix one thing, another thing will go wrong. You need to take it upon yourself to learn everything you can about the car's various systems so you can stay on top of all that stuff. Otherwise, you'll have to pay someone else to do it and not everyone has a Jay Leno or Tyler Hoover budget. Don't forget the cost of tools in that budget. You will need them.

  • @lsh3rd
    @lsh3rd 5 лет назад +27

    I'll sum it up simply: if you are the kind of guy that doesn't like to spin your own wrenches, stick with a newer car. I've owned my 4 eye for 26 years now and I think there is hardly a fastener that I haven't used a tool on.

      The awesome thing about them is you can do everything yourself on them. My '85 four eye went through T5's like friggin candy plus that 7.5" rear end was crap so I spent a bit of time underneath replacing them, I can't imagine wrenching on the rear of my S550.

      You have a 85 ? I need some help and advise on my build... Roller Motors seem to be tough to get parts for. at least when i enter 1985 in search lol. I am lookin for the complete gasket kit and don't see one with a full oil pan gasket...lil things like that drive me nuts hahaha all the aluminum heads have 2.02 intake valves and worried about clearance... spring pressure too...600 would be ideal and everyone sells heads with .500 that's close with the E303 cam I bought...

    • @KlipschHead281
      @KlipschHead281 5 лет назад

      @@wildbillo68 - I haven't had a Fox body for 22 years, sadly I sold the '85 Notch 3 years after buying it which was stupid but live and learn. My '85 GT I bought in 1993, the motor was weak so I bought a brand new 306 shortblock from Jegs along with GT40 heads, an E cam and headers, it ran mid 12's which wasn't bad for the time. You should be able to pick up gasket kits from every auto parts store out there. Summit has "Fel-Pro Oil Pan Gasket SFLOS13260T" for $33.00, they have everything for those engines.

    I owned an 88 GT as a teen and im now 44 and purchased an 86 GT. In 2 years ive put less than 50 miles on the 80k odometer reading. Ive stripped the car and almost finished painting the jambs, engine bay, underside of hood and hatch, and all parts that wont get coverage when the car is put back together. Im spraying a Candy Pearl Apple Red. Anyways, my question is what performance upgrades should i consider? It has flowmaster mufflers, kbb headers, caster-camber plates with 3 point brace, sits on lowering springs with p275 in the rear p245 up front. What other upgrades should i start with?

    I know all about that Lincoln air ride suspension not working (I had (4) Mark VII's). Looked sweet sitting low, but GOT-DAMM (the ride was horrible!). Matter of fact, the air ride on the last '86 I had half a** semi worked. The Lincoln Mark VII phase came way before my ownership of Mustangs (much more affordable for a teenager at that time). Matter of fact. All 4 of them were bought from me noticing them having sat for a while in driveways/yards. Not a (1) of them was found from an online classified ad. Would just knock on doors back then and ask. All of them cars I wound up buying for next to nothing!!! Im on my 3rd fox body now. Vermillion red '90 LX 25th Anniversary 5.0 Convertible. I absolutely love it. Far as I'm concerned, the fox is without a doubt my preffered Mustang (especially the '87-'93). I had a 65 junker and a rough yet very potential 66 Mustang (both coupes). I could have whipped that 66 into shape, but I couldn't fool myself. I'm just a fox body guy at heart (the Lincoln Mark VII was a good "introduction" into the Fox Body Mustang world for me anyway. Nowhere near my appreciation towards the fox stang, but I really liked that car and have found memories of it (like the battery blowing up while my father was driving it due to a faulty voltage Regulator!). That one in particular was a green 1st year '84 "Continental" Mark VII LSC with a carbureted 302........(paid 200 bucks for it).

    There is something about owning and working on old VW bugs, British sports cars or older Jeeps exc. Back in '85 It was my dad's car and I started driving it. I ended up inheriting it when my dad got himself a new car. We sold it in 1995. My dad had something in his eye the day we let it go. I've been thinking that a manual one would be a great first car for my 15 year old kid. As a father & son project. They are challenging to drive. Brakes lock and they tend to drift on a moment notice. Once you get used to their "character" they are agile little 8 cylinder monsters! ⚡️

    Oh God, I'm thinking of all the girlfriends I've had over the years and how they felt about my Mustangs. One of them had previous manual trans experience, she jumped into the car and took off as if she'd been driving it all her life. She turned and said "this thing is easy to drive! Can we put an engine like this into my Probe?" LOL! One GF I had pretended to be afraid of the car but after we spit up a friend of hers told me that Emily would go out looking for races when she was supposed to be doing errands for my business! Afraid my butt! My current girlfriend has no interest in it. None. She just doesn't get the magic and I'm sure gets tired of me working on it all the time and talking about all of the cool Fox related channels on RUclips. She's a good sport though and at least tolerates my "hobby car". Lucky me.

    I’ve had one for years. I currently own a 1990 hatch. older cars always have something wrong with them. lol but for me my AC still works. No heat tho heater core is bad. I bypassed it so I wouldn’t have to tear the dash out. So not very winter friendly. Funny thing I can be driving around in my wife’s new car or my truck and nobody even knows I’m there. But when I’m in my Mustang i always get approached about it. It’s crossed my mind to sell the car. It’s developed a pretty bad rear main seal leak. I’ve replaced it twice but it seems to start leaking again in about a year. I guess I’m not doing it right?

    You have to put the work in to really enjoy a Foxbody. The "work" may be minimal - even just a weekend or two a year - but you'll have to put it in regardless. They are an accessible entry level old school RWD platform for whatever you might want. You don't even have to stick with the stock 5.0 pushrod engine, almost any engine goes in the Fox game thanks to the big engine bay and variety of aftermarket parts. It has somehow become one of (together with the later SN-95/New Edge Fox chassis cars) the most "building block" style car out there. So if you're the sort of person that has an image of their ideal car - a Foxbody is a good fit. I wanted a supercharged V8 on a relatively low income and the Foxbody was a perfect fit for this. I'm good with computers and wiring, so I even ended up tuning it myself with a Megasquirt ECU. It's taken me places I've never expected. I've put about 10 grand into it including the price of the car, but I would have been in for much more with almost any other platform. The key thing here is that I had a vision and was willing to do the work. You clearly had a vision with your Coyote swap and you made it happen by doing the work.
    Foxbody cars are a poor choice for the "out of the box" style auto enthusiast. If you're the kind of guy who just wants to bolt some wheels and a cold air intake on and call it a build you'll be disappointed. I agree with the first half of this video, those guys might be better off sticking with a more "current" platform like the S550.
    They also have huge NVH and tend to rattle inside and suffer from cheap plastics(few 80s/90s cars don't - only 80s car I have ever been in that had decent plastics was my dad's '86 Mercedes 420 SEL W126). If you're all about ride comfort and elegance - you want a "grand tourer" - this is gonna be a tough task in a Foxbody. My brother described my car as a "garbage can with a rocket engine attached to it", you'll get something raw, quick and brutal with no tact or manners whatsoever. For guys like us the raw ride is part of the appeal, but it might not be so great for others.

    I've owned many Mustang's, my main complaint about the Fox was lack of leg room. My current GT is an 18 A10 and the leg room is awesome but if I could I'd still get a Fox to play with. Anybody remember the Goodyear Gatorbacks, they were crap, they didn't last and they followed every groove in the road! :)

    I'm 24. I bought my 92 gt at 19. Its my all time favorite car. It's my baby and will never sell it. I was blessed to find one that was already repainted and well taken care of. It's a wonderful car. I added some modern things like wireless charging and cupholders (thank you lmr.com). I re did the entire interior and engine. Its just a reliable, cool, unique car that people my age always stop and ask about. And when they want to talk shit about how it's old and slow it's also a blast to put them in their place. All while quiet with the ac on 😍

      @KlipschHead281 5 лет назад +4

      Exactly, old and slow, back in 1995 I had my '85 GT, it looked stock but ran mid 12's. Got challenged by an older guy with a ZR1, I walked it, he was very impressed and said he would never just assume he'd smoke a car based on looks.

      I got a black 1989 convertible GT. People are shocked to find out that I actually have an ice cold working AC in my car. Often get praised on how nice the new like convertible top is with matching equally new like interior. I can't believe how shitty looking most people have their foxbody mustangs. Then again not everyone knows how to paint and do their own mechanic work like me. Even a decent quality gallon of primer, basecoat & clear coat system can cost about $600, not to mention sand paper, puddy, good quality "bondo," several different sizes and shapes of sanding blocks, thinner, reducer etc. Other things such as paint guns, primer guns, compressor, air blowers...so many years of buying, collecting body work tools, etc. Your very own body work and paint job can easily add up to $1000 only on materials. It's no wonder most people drive classics looking like crap. Very very expensive hobby.

    My 88 Mustang Sally GT convertible that I have owned since she was new, rides rough, has wind noise, the power steering whines, and runs like a bat out of hell. I wouldn't have it any other way. No electronic stuff and a basic aftermarket cd player. She is a 5 speed and needs constant attention to keep her going down the road. I'm in my 60's now and she keeps me alert when driving

    S550's are everywhere now. Starting to hardly see Edge's at this point. And now, S-197's are starting to loos motors left and right due to mileage. Foxbody's seem to be on the road less than classic mustangs at this point. Seems weird, but I guess we are getting to that point in life.

Now it was owned by an elderly lady, and as of last summer my idle did start messing up, i guess it's going to start with the fox body problems now..lol I've lowered it 1.5 Cobra rims koni shocks and i just bought the Pan handler bar after seeing ur's. You're opinion seeing how it's in great shape and u don't see them pretty much stock, would that be about as far as u would go?

    The thing I can not stand in newer cars is how modular they are. You need a proverbial technician to fix them. Fact is, I loved the J-Bodies I had (GM's cousin of sorts as the body was near similar but often lacked the power of a Fox) and...oh how if only I could pull together the money for an A.O.D. (never learned how to drive manual)

    It is refreshing to see an enthusiast of a certain make and model of car do a video on why that certain make and model of car isn't for everyone.
    I've had three Mustangs in my life thus far, prior to the one I'm currently daily-driving: a '66 K-Code fastback, a '92 LX 5.0, and '99. I don't miss the '66 or the '92 at all. I don't yearn to own another one. Count me in as one who is in the "Foxbody is not for me" camp. When the '99 got destroyed by an uninsured driver last month, I couldn't wait to get another New Edge. I'm currently rolling a 2002 now. As much as I love the New Edge Mustangs, they aren't for everybody, either.
    While the Foxbody isn't where my own heart for Mustangs is at, I'm glad there are people out there that love the things enough to keep them on the road, on the tracks, and out of the scrap yards. I appreciate them and I can appreciate the enthusiasm people have for them, but I can do that vicariously.
