Nintendo GameCube HDMI Adapters have been out for a while now. Earlier this year we saw some releases including the EON GCHD. While it was a great product it was considered expensive at $150 USD. EON have listened to their customers and annouced the GCHD MKII which has many new features all for the same price of $150 USD. But is it any good? Is it worth the cost over some of the cheaper gcvideo alternatives? Lets find out !

The only thing thats missing is the Bloosport training montage music :D
Meh someone make this a gif lol
oh man i totally should have done that haha
@@ModernVintageGamer never too late - you still have that video material... ;D
lame
Another thing to note is that it includes a JTAG connector for firmware updating. Pretty nifty device
Awesome review on this, my guy. I picked up the original earlier this year, although it looked nice I wish it did have more for the $150 price tag. This looks to be everything people were asking for and more at the same price, I'd definitely nab this model if I didn't already have one on hand.
It's been 3 years and there's still no replies

F-Zero GX still looks stunning to this day...

the modded version looks way better

I ordered a Carby yesterday after the My Life in Gaming video. I look forward to being able to easily capture from my favorite console.
@MrCdm75 Late reply but yeah I ordered it from their website insurrectionindustries.com
I just recently picked up gcn after not having one since i sold it when the wii launched.
These kinds of videos are very helpful as i dive back in, so thank you. I'm currently using composite and i can tolerate it, but having a 4ktv means every little improvement is huge, so I'd prefer to maximize quality.
Thank you again, and keep up the great work!
More videos about gamecube!!
In the works. I will be modding one in a future video then giving it away on the channel
@@ModernVintageGamer How about one about softmod the gamecube via Smash\Wind Waker Hacks + SWISS + SD Gecko? I feel is really one of the most obscure but easy way to mod the cube!

I like how Grover is just sitting there, watching you play the GameCube at 3:13
I have this on my 480p EDTV Plasma and it’s amazing.
Same here bought mine from Lik'San as well years back. Now it's worth gold. As well man what did I buy tons of dreamcast parts from them back in the day. Good times. Great Video as usual! Really need to get me an GCHD or similar soon.
I bought my component cables for my GC at EB games back in the day, they were 39.99. I just recently discovered that I owned them when I opened my gamecube box up to put the memory cards back in the box. Boy was I surprised. Past Me was on top of things lol
As always a great video. I love your video's while I'm not a gamer.
Last week I had to make a review video about RecalBox on a new SBC. The RockPi4B. I had never played N64, PSP, NES, SNES, ...
I actually did not enjoy playing all those games. Only games I'm used playing are racing games. All the others I truly didn't know what I had to do. My video will be online by the end of the week. I've got to wait until RecalBox is released.
My favorite game was F1 Championship on the N64. PSP also worked great on the RockPi4B, I was amazed by that.
Thanks for the great content, greetings, NicoD
F-Zero looked amazing on the GC
William Hetherington Yup it did even on a crt tv.
I never considered myself a hard gamer, yet I find myself binging your videos.
Wow that call back to LikSang brought back some memories.
The Panasonic Game Cube was so rare I can see why they didn't see the need to accommodate it.
your setup looked better with the ultrawide.
you should bring it back, and use that 4k panel as topmounted
The cable is worth more than the console? Lol.
Get a carby adapter for $75. It has superior build quality and actually comes with the remote and hdmi cable you need to use it unlike eon who are proudly charging $150 for their cheap shitty handmade adapters.
Ian Cowell it‘s sold out
@@lurk50000 They shouldn't take long to restock. It may be in short supply at the moment because of this covid-19 mess.
Ian Cowell thanks for the info

You should do a video on CEMU. I don't know what it is, but your style of videos would be amazing for a video about that emulator, even though you mainly focus on retro-ish games. BOTW at 4k 60fps hacked is godly.
For me, the wiiu and nintendont with the GameCube controller adaptor is the best option.
Also note that you can use Nintendont on Wii as well (along with the GC gamedisc support) and you can get a decent Wii component cable for cheap.
@@TommyAgramonSeth indeed, and the video output quality I'd indeed worse on the Wii, it's not that much worse, and definitely not enough of a difference to warrant $150.
Absolutely, plenty of ways to play Gamecube titles without dishing out $150.
Wiii Homebrew with Nintendont. Sold my old Gamecube years ago. This is a niche product for suckers who think it's the only 'purist' option. Let them pay the premium.
i agree, i think people are getting carried away with using original hardware. simply no point. @@angusmacangus3181
the only reason i can see that gchd mkii costs that much is because the component cable costs 250+
the gchd could easily be sold a fair bit cheaper than its current price giving more people the chance to upgrade and enjoy it
The only way to play vintage/retro games is where you can smell and taste the individual pixels.
Since the price is already high, it would be interesting to see how this looks with the Marseille Inc. mCable for some post processing.
Idk about the mCable, but I just got a mClassic and it looks beautiful.
The digital out port was originally not for component output, but rather a custom 3D screen.
The best channel ever. Information is endless .

Spawnwave knows a way
Lmao this guy puts Spawnwave to shame. Anybody with a screwdriver and half a brain can take stuff apart.
Nice Yamahas man, I've got the bigger models on my studio/desktop.
That's a nice piece of kit. If I still had a GC I would definitely want one!
If only it were easier to know which products will be abundant and which will be scarce in 20 years from now.
Just got a wii, decided to get a wii because a component cable is so expensive! I’m modding my Wii right now
How’d it go?
@@titanderp I haven't had time to fully mod my Wii yet. Need to grab some GC controllers and install more games.
L7JM Ah ok, good luck!
Thanks. You just saved me a bunch of money. I still have my original GameCube component cable
If the Carby has the same performance as this adapter, $75 sounds like a fair price. But $150 for the EON seems excessive. At that point, you’re better off just spending the extra $50 on the official component cables, and still getting superior image quality with it.
Its Beyond Me Why Anybody Would “ACTUALLY” Want To Buy It, No Disrespect towards anyone whom already did, But Couldn’t You Just Get A Wii HDMI cable to The GameCube To connect To Lab-top, PC. And Just Use Your Cell Phone, Email It To Yourself Open Email From lab-top To Then Make Edits From Your Computer
An Accurate Almost Spot On Price Would Be $89.95

I ordered one of those component cables from Nintendo back in the day, for my 16:9 HD CRT. Unfortunately, it immediately went on backorder and then unavailable, so I never got one. I remember hesitating, because I thought the original price of $25-$30 was expensive back then. Even though I have a modded Wii U, there is benefit in getting one of these for Game Boy Player and GBA connector compatibility.
I had 3 of the official original cables, sold a few years back with the console for $100. If I only knew its true worth..........
i'd love to have one of these but even 75$ is too much i gave 6dollars at the flea market for my game cube so spending 75$ or 150$ is just too much maybe 20 or 30 seems like a great product tho
Lmfao that clip at 0:50 was perfection mate!
For 150 bucks I could get 5 GameCube Consoles...
The device might be good but to justify *that price* it needs to at least bring me a beer while playing!
How the hell can you get 5 game cubes? The console ALONE with NO controller is $50 controllers can range from 20-30 bucks. And you still gotta get games for it.
@@Bitzell Simple ebay search gives me that they go for 30$ with free international shipping. So no, you can get 5 GameCubes for 150 bucks.
On Every garage sales un France, a GC is like 20 to 50 depend on the numbers of controlers.... Lol
Besides there are plenty of ways to play Gamecube much cheaper or even free. This is just for a small niche of retro enthusiasts wanting to play on the original console.
Not even 10 years ago Gamecubes were going for $15 bucks.
Good video. Will there be a wii video like this in the future?
Loved a look into your workout routine 😍
I really need to pick up a GameCube!!
Honestly, not really. The Wii plays the games just fine.
@@endmysuffering8720 - Or even better, mod a Wii-U. About as easy as a Wii to mod, hdmi HD standard, native Wii support & unlocked GC support with Nintendont, better hardware for emulators & homebrew, + Wii-U game support! A Wii-U can be had used for less than the cost of this adapter alone! The only problem is you need an adapter to use GC controllers & there are no GC memory card ports for save file transfer. They can be copied to a Wii-U's sd card, though.
I really enjoy your channel. Keep going with your awesome projects too.
I love this and saving up for one in purple am I the only one that has fallen in love with the box 😂😂
I liked the video because of the GameCube boxing gloves bit, it was a delightful inclusion.
Wait, there wasn't any Gamecube with built in sandwich maker? :(
Nice video, i really likes your reviews.
My life in Gaming did a video about the same topic on the same time and with your video it's amazing what kind of a picture I got as a consumer do buy a hdmi solution for my Gamecube.
One last thing, there is a HDMI Cable for the xbox classic out from mascarry, it works very well and maybe you are quite interested to get one of these.
The best way to play Gamecube games is to buy off Ebay a Wii for $15 and a Wii2hdmi Adaptor for $3. Been playing Smash Bros Melee, Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart Double Dash & Metroid Prime on it. Looks amazing!
Jon Davies when did they make a game boy player for the wii?
@@smobilson1359 Haha good one. I don't like playing my gameboy color / advance games on tv anyway. I got an original back lit gba for them bro.
I use the like button to mark the videos I watched. Cheers MVG :)
What about OEM Component vs GCHD2’s Component
Love the dance Lol, love that Panasonic Q even more though. I still regret not investing in one.
more and more I need to build my own GCvideo board... I already had boards printed, ordered all the components... I just need the TIME to build it...
You didn't mention the input lag, whether it's still there, I have the original component cables for gamecube, and playing games such as F-Zero GX can be nearly unplayable because of the massive input lag
enable progressive scan to reduce input lag
I bought the GCHD-MK2 when I was rebuilding my console collection and chose it over the Carby for two reasons, neither being the price: Feature list and that it looked like a more professional product to me. Having the Wii RCA/Component as an option as well as having an optical audio jack were things that the Carby just didn't have when I was shopping around.
I regret never playing the GameCube back in the day. It looks like a good machine.
Never too late to play it.
I got my component cable for my GameCube a couple years ago when it was $200. Now they're going for $350 or more, probably because gaming hardware is in demand because of COVID. Anyway, this setup will probably be worth $1000 in another few decades.
Another fantastic and professional video...thank you.
This is by far the best and most in-depth review on the GameCube hdmi modding scene! Thanks again for the amazing videos :D
Seems like a stellar offering and great upgrade from the original for streaming. I will say the Carby is the better buy IMO if you just want to hook up the gamecube via HDMI to a modern TV for sure. I will say this and could be youtube or my monitor, but the official component cables seemed to have more detail vs the HDMI when done side by side. Now to be fair it is very minuet, and you would have to be really trying to split hairs. I would say for the absolute best picture go for the official component cables if money is no big deal and your not worried about TV's no longer having component hook ups. However, for damn near the same thing, less money, and somewhat future proof hook up (compared to component cables) the modern GCHD or Carby are the way to go hands down, and to be honest the slight detail increase in the component cables don't justify the price or lack of future ease of access for me at least.
I noticed some audio delay on the Metroid Prime 2 segment of the video. Is audio delay persistent with the HDMI adapter?
Also, shoutouts to using the Analogue Super NT/Mega SG HDMI cable there.
Yes, I noticed the delay too. This & the Carby have an audio delay that is really annoying. Not sure why no reviews or comments mention it? I got around it by using the Carby & plugging the composite audio connections into a soundbar & used the Carby for video, though for the price of these I wish it just worked.
Could you do a video comparing the MKII to the Dolphin emulator? I hear you can get the same video quality via Dolphin. Id really like to know if this is true.
You can probably get better video quality in Dolphin, if you've got a beefy GPU you can pump up the internal resolution, apply texture filtering, antialiasing and even install HD texture packs.
Still love my real GC though, somehow emulators always have enough little problems with them to put me off.
@@NotMoreZombies Thanks a lot for the info :)
@@ReveriePass Thanks!
If you have the money to build a custom Dolphin Emulator, you can get a Gamecube game scaled to beautiful 4k. This is a Poor Mans Scaler.
Stuemler it’s not even a scaler just an adapter
Not worth the money to me. I only use my Gamecube for the GBA Player. The rest can be played on my Wii via component cables. Great video!
I actually use the last revision of Zeldaxpro's original GC hdmi adapter, works like a charm.... still want this one though, just looks nicer and I like how sturdy it is
Gamecube . . . the one (system) that got away (from me, anyway). I need to get one.
just get a wii or wii u.
unless you are planing on using the gameboy player.
Love your work mate. Thank you.
What interests me as an European the most: Does it also work on PAL Consoles or is it NTSC only? Another thing I don't quite understand is how do you switch between progressive scan and interlaced mode? I know that the Wii gives you the option of choosing between an HD TV 480p or regular 480i output, but I don't remember the GameCube having that same options available in the settings menu?
Most games will ask at boot times if you want to enable progressive scan, just select Yes.
In gamecube era , almost tv in japan come with a connector called "D端子".The D端子 is just component in different form. You can buy the D-tanshi cable and a D-tanshi to component adapter. amzn.asia/d/dvbfPZx
Nintendont also works on latter Wiis that Nintendo removed the GC support. I use it in mine, very nice.
Apparently the Wii Family Edition hasbetter video quality than the original Wii which is pretty cool.
I have a component cable, but I think it's for the Wii. But if I remember right, it seems like I could never really see any big difference in video quality. But that was so long ago that I might have just forgot. My new 4K TV doesn't even have component cable plugs on the back. Only composite.
It's cheaper to get a launch day wii and an hdmi adapter for the wii than to buy just this gamecube adapter. As an added bonus, you don't need to change discs on the wii.
I have all sort of nastalgia for the gamecube console, but given that the wii has improved the user experience so much (no need to change discs when playing backups) I don't see the need for the actual console itself.
this hdmi adapter is pure digital to digital but the wii hdmi adapter is analog to digital

HELLO FROM AUSTRALIA!!!
Dude, finally been noticed by my favourite australian youtuber, cool.
One of the best youtube channels!
I had a GC component cable about 10 years ago, even then they we starting to get expensive and harder to find. Sold it with the GC for an unremarkable amount of money, kicking myself now!
lol
I guess if the GC is your goto/only console for the 6th gen, i could maybe see the point, but 150$ (im guessing US$ too) is way way too expensive for just a better video quality in my mind. The console itself sell for 40$ canadian... Feel ridiculous to pay 4x that price for having a better video quality.
You can have a very decent video quality on the OG Xbox for much much cheaper. Dunno about the PS2. When it comes to the GC in my case its only for exclusives so ill play them trough the Wii exept PSO Episode 1 and 2, for some reason the damn game won't work in my Wii.
I bought a $5 Chinese component cable for my OG Xbox and it looks amazingly good. I guess these people started charging $150 because the alternative was $250 and people got sucked into "saving $100"
Oh they work great? Maybe ill give it a shot before going for the pound or hyperkin HDMI one then...
My TV has component anyway.
You would need the Devolution loader on the Wii to play PSO Episode I & II online.
Does this one have the sound lag (about 1 second or so) like the original GCHD? And why does no one talk about this? I have a GCHD
It appears to have a lag in this video. Not sure why he wouldn’t mention it?
I have a MK-II and get no audio lag. From what I understand the original GCHD had lag due to it pulling audio through the digital port somehow.
Hell I just have a 1st Gen Wii and go with the rgb cables that way. Not the best but for the price point it's just fine with me
Issa yes for me DAWG (great video)
Great video! But one thing I would disagree with is the usefulness of having both video outputs available at the same time. The average person buying this is going to pick one port and stick with it.
I play GameCube games with Wii U widescreen mod and an M-cable (upscales and adds AA). Best way to go
I bought my component cable early on when I got my GameCube. iirc I got it directly through Nintendo, and I think even from Japan because I couldn't get it in The Netherlands. It was expensive but the quality was worth it.
Didn't know they would be so expensive now :-) Not giving mine up though.
Well id assume most ppl arent going to stream their games. I get that ppl need to be rewarded for their work making this stuff, but 150 dollars to most ppl is not worth it. They really need to keep this stuff in the $20-30 ballpark, saving some of those added features and bigger price tags for the streamers who need it.
The funny thing is they didnt do any of the work. The gcvideo software used by these hdmi adapters is open source, anyone can use it. Eon simply made their own but had the nerve to charge $150 for theirs as if they are having to recoup the cost of developement. Their second adapter (also $150) rips off the Mike Chi's retrotink2x line of of products, which arent open source. Going so far as to scratch off the chip labels and cover them in epoxy in an effort to hide it.
Imagine if the GameCube used dvd, there wouldn’t be compression or two discs etc.
If MVG was replaced by a robot we’d never notice
Now someone needs to create an special HDMI adapter for the original Wii, give me that Wii HD gaming please!
That won't be much help since that single video port supports different video signals. Those kinds of ports are usually susceptible to noise.
Has this been tested with the elgato HD 60S?? I Would love to stream using this method, but i'm not sure if the compatibility is there.
5:10 but there is another adapter you can use now that only has a digital ab plug :)
You forgot to mention that you can play all GameCube games on first Wii generation console:) you can use GameCube controller and memory card as well
am I imagining this or is the image from the original GC Component Cable slightly sharper?
$150 for a small video converter
Criticized for being slightly overpriced...
Does an HDMI adapter make sense when using a PAL Gamecube, since the games just run run in 576i? And does the adapter eliminate combing artefacts caused by the conversion from interlaced to progressive on LCD TVs?
I cannot get the RetrovisionHD Wii component cable to work with MKII.
Audio works, just the video cuts out after booting the GC.Unusuable signal.
Whats with twilight princess's intro being downpitched?

0:50 Thats why you have such good muscle xD
The problem with this is even though the signal is 480p, your tv will upscale it to the native panel resolution. In my case, 4k. It doesnt look terrible, but its not crisp/sharp. That being said, I can now play my GC on my Samsung Q70R (which only has HDMI ports).
I got my tv to show true resolution once by going into the Service Menu. Theres nothing in there to fool around with and by doing so, you void your warranty. I cant seem to reproduce this, although I know the tv is capable of doing it.
Im at a loss.
Ahhh... The gamecube... I spent many, MANY, hours, several years ago, playing team deathmatch battles on one of my top, all time, favorite games. The rendering was super interesting, the game play, graphics, and concept, were, to me ( a person who really never was all that into comic books ) so awesome... the backstory, though a somewhat unimaginative, and overt rip-off of a historic, and also, very tragic event, was definitely shored up by a guest voice-over performance, by a man, everyone remembers from his role, as a certain " caped crusader "... Has anyone figured out which title I'm referring to yet??? If not, let me help make the picture come to clarity... It is none other than. 13... I also really dug, 007 - nightfire, and rogue agent... I made a regular habit, of shocking my friends, with my ( probably to this day ) unmatched skills with my favorite weapon... fly-by-wire rockets oooooohooohooo, man did I used to piss my friends off!!! 😂😂😂 I could, almost literally, thread a needle with one those things. After which I would then proceed to hunt down my quarry, using my knowledge of potential obstacles, and the truly usable routes/shortcuts, coupled with my opponents location at time of release, to steer that rocket, right into your face.... most times anyways... i was occasionally forced to settle for a foot, or whatever happened to be available at that point, as th9se rockets had a time limit, after which, they'd sail off into the sunset. Never to be seen again... that meant that I had to be quick about tracking down opponents. Pretty quickly, I would memorize all of quickest/ workable routes from/to anywhere in the map. Note, not every map was suitable for f.b.w. rockets, though that didn't discourage me from trying anyway... teehee... teehee...
As far as 13 was concerned, I have a lot of trouble sleeping. Not the getting to sleep part, but the staying that way one. R.e.m. sleep disorder of some sort... needless to say, that upon waking, and having hope of returning to sleep for at least a few hours, I'd pick up controller, and spend that otherwise wasted time, handing out several merciless beatdowns to the a.i. bots, until my thirst for virtual blood was slaked enough that I could once again rest for a time... usually. Like 2 or 3 hours... then I'd be up again, merc-ing more bots... ahhh... good times...
