The wild switch up toward the end was meant to emulate turning the dial to a different station. And yes, the Spirit of radio was the tagline of the local station in Toronto where they grew up.
The Spirit of Radio begins is a tribute to radio in general, but Rush are especially recalling and lamenting over the early days of FM radio, when AM was still the standard and was fully commercialized, there came FM with higher fidelity, stereo sound, and not yet being commercialized was a free and open form of radio, like the early days of the Internet, when DJ's played what they wanted too, not the songs record labels shoved down their throats, payed to play certain songs and bands more often. Even Rush, with 5, 10 and even 20 minute songs were Played, instead of cramming as many 2-3 minute songs in an hour as you can to keep cash flowing. Though they show a history of DJ's and the stations they were on, there are actually two specific radio stations Rush pays specific tribute too. The first being the Toronto station they grew up with that had the moniker "The Spirit of Radio." The second is shown in the video; the scene with the woman DJ who is holding Rush's self-titled debut album in her hands. I forget the station or her name (obviously shown in the video), but it was in Cleveland Ohio. It was the first U.S. radio station to play Rush. The song played that made America sit up and take notice, starting with Cleveland, was 'Working Man.' The Cleveland station was soon inundated with people calling in asking when the new Led Zeppelin album was coming out, mistaking Rush and the song Working Man for Led Zeppelin with a new song from a new album. The first Rush album, before Neil took over the job of lyricist, was very Zeppelin-esque throughout.
It blows my mind that after all of the Rush songs you guys have reacted to you are just now getting to this. This is usually the first or second song that people listen to from Rush 😂👍
Crazy it is just 3 people putting out that sound. My 1st concert of theirs i lost it. Geddy was singing, playing bass, and playing a keyboard with his feet, his feet 😱 so talented. Geddy is underrated on bass and so is Alec on Guitar. Rip to the Professor, one of the greatest drummers of all time Neil Peart
You did this song in a live performance. There were 500,000 people there and they started with a Rolling Stones lick of Paint it Black before the song.
1980 Permanent Waves! Best Rush album in my mind. I love them all, but this album has no skip songs. Been a fan since 1980, I was 11 when I heard this album and I was hooked.
RADIO WAS OUR INTERNET BACK THEN. UNFORTUNATELY, TO MANY GREAT GREAT BANDS NEVER GOT THE TIME PLAY, OR THE RECOGNITION THAT THEY DESERVED. ALSO THERE WAS AN OLDER GENERATION THAT LOOKED DOWN ON ROCK MUSIC. A LOT OF THE MUSICIANS WERE SELF TAUGHT, EQUIPMENT WAS BASIC. THE MUSIC WAS NEW N THE GENERATION WAS FIGHTING BACK AGAINST THE SYSTEM FOR MORE FREEDOMS N LESS CORRUPTION. GREAT REACTIONS TO THIS THREE MAN, CANADIAN BAND. TWO OF THE GREATEST DRUMMERS OF ROCK, NOW GONE. JOHN BONHAM N NEIL PEART. R.I.P. LADS. THERES A LOT OF RUSH MUSIC OUT THERE. ROCK ON 👊🖖
This was the first rock that was released in the 1980's, January. This song is from Permanent Waves and that was the first time and song that I had ever heard of Rush. My reaction was "who is this?!!" and the guy that I was helping spread sand in his yard told me it was Rush and I have seen them 8 times and every show was memorable. Great guys and great band and great reaction. Suggestion, if you haven't done so, check out Rush at dinner, it is awesome and just off the wall hilarious.
Alex actually put a mask on like that during an interview for Permanent Waves in 1980. Alex has always been a funny guy. The song is celebrating radio but also lamenting when radio went too commercial.
All this machinery making modern music Can still be open-hearted Not so coldly charted It's really just a question of your honesty Yeah, your honesty One likes to believe in the freedom of music But glittering prizes And endless compromises Shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah Rush - thinking mans rock
cool in the video that showed the DJ playing the first album… i forget her name, but she was the first big DJ to play RUSH on american radio. the world was introduced to RUSH with WORKING MAN.
This and Tom Sawyer are a great introduction to Rush. Your favourite Rush depends on when you got on board. For oldies like me, By Tor, 2112 and Cygnus top the creativity chart, there are those that love the Synth era (Its OK I guess) all the way to Clockwork Angels which is a top tier Rush album.
Now check out the live version of this song from the SARS benefit concert in Toronto with the "Paint It Black" intro. Alex leaves freakin' scorch marks on the fret board during the solo!
You guys need to go back further, like Fly by night or Caress of steel. By-Tor and the Snowdog and the Necromancer will totally transfix you. Maybe even Cygnus X-1, great stuff! BTW this is the 80s, not the 70s, although just barely. 😉
@@dmusiclife5727 They started out then but didn’t become huge until the 1980’s and got better with each decade…..they ended in 2015 when Neil Peart passed away.
That video was a tribute to Neil and was produced by Rush for the 40th anniversary of Permanent Waves. There were so many moments put into this video which is fantastic to the true Rush fan!
I suggest a deep cut: 'Available Light' (studio version). I was surprised by the melodic power of Geddy's vocal, especially on the chorus.
That is an incredible, underplayed track.

Long live RUSH ❤
CFNY was a fantastic station to grow up listening to!

"very Zeppelin-esque" and a little "The Who" as well!
Cool video that's full of RUSH history & Easter eggs.
yes sir.. started with the red barchetta...
It blows my mind that after all of the Rush songs you guys have reacted to you are just now getting to this. This is usually the first or second song that people listen to from Rush 😂👍
Classic! First song I heard by my favorite band, back in 1982!
i graduated HS in 83 bro , also a 65er!
Ach, that final tribute screen gets me every time… cheers.

This is one of the best driving tunes ever. Be careful of the speed though, you'll catch yourself going too fast before you know it.
Review Rush Malignant Narcissism live from Snakes and Arrows tour.Enjoy.
It's tough coming up with a Top 5 for a Rush fan. Here goes:
Cygnus X-1 Book Two: Hemispheres
Red Barchetta
The Spirit of Radio
2112
Limelight

Great to see you guys doing another RUSH reaction.

Have like this video from the first time I heard it and saw it. And the way RUSH put all the DJ's that help get their sound out over the air waves.
🎉🎉this song was inspired by a pirate radio station that would play all forms of music from r&b to rock and roll to reggae.
CFNY Toronto, not a pirate station.
You guys reviewed the live version of this song a year or two ago. 😂😂😂 But, with all the songs you do it would be impossible to remember them all. 🤘🏻
Check out best intro ever by Rush running into Spirit of Radio. Opening tracks from the R30 tour. Awesome

you should react to subdivisions live in dallas
Subdivisions is one of my favorites. I'm so thankful I got to see Rush 3 times. Just amazing

Rush - thinking mans rock
RUSH The greatest rock band that ever was or ever will be. It's not in any movies and the album was released in 1980.

This album came out
January 14, 1980.
A perfect opening for the
New Decade, don’t you
Think?😉
Arguably their BEST song!
LOL! It's true, but it's also a pretty big argument!
For me, this is their 2nd best song . . . tied with about 4 dozen other songs.
But that's just today . . . nope ‐ now this song is #1.
Never mind.
I go Tom Sawyer. But Spirit is a very close second.
@@stevensorrell1625Tom Sawyer on a good stereo is phenominal.
Burned out on Tom Sawyer
Did you also notice the radio dial for Alex's fret board?
I suggest the Rush song "Test For Echo" or the Rush song "Carnies"
RED BARCHETTA... everything else... tho excellent is AFTER.. on an ablum that may be Perfect... SFMF

Technically it came out in December of 1979. This album launched a more radio friendly sound.
I’m so glad I got to see them standing room, front row before the GOAT, Neil passed. 🤘
canadian icons. awesome
Thanks!
I'm pretty sure the hand thing is what Geddy did to get the crowd to clap along early in his career. Just a fun tribute in the music video.
Every Rush song is a top-five Rush song.
These guys were virtuoso's . Gene Simmons Called them the Led Zeppelin of the north .
Neil was a big fan of The Police, so they decided to play with the Reggae sound
I’m surprised you guys had not heard this yet! 😳
Maybe the guy wearing the green horror mask was their recently died partner, drummer Neil, since the animation was after his death ?
"Subdivisions" by rush please!! 🙏 ❤
Too much talent!
Now check out the live version of this song from the SARS benefit concert in Toronto with the "Paint It Black" intro.

Maybe in I love you man.
hey, you should do a review of an amazing song called "Las Chicas Malas Desafinan" by a new spanish artist called Ruslana. Hope u like it!!
Try nobody's hero live 1997. Deep...

Nothing insightful from this video reaction but a thumbs up given for throwing on a good song and playing the video.

👍
Now watch the same song live. Sars concert.
The song came out in 1980
Isnt Rush from the seventies though?

Rio Live YYZ...you will not regret it one moment. Can't sing along to an instrumental? Brazilian fan...'hold my beer'.

The song Rocks the Video sucks
