@@steve3904 he’s got a great book you should read called “Set the Boy Free”. He talks about this in the book and how he had set up this 40/40/10/10 % split agreed upon but not put into contract, so then when shit hit the fan he didn’t have a contract to fall back on, just verbal agreement and his word against theirs. It was effectively johnny’s band as well if you read the book, he gets shafted in a way. He wrote instrumentals, did the mixing and stuff, and then got kicked out of his own band.
This is one of the many reasons why I love The Smiths. Johnny Marr is the ultimate cool guitarist - nothing fake about him whateoever. Big contrast to the sensitive, geeky, shy guy that Morrissey is. These are the completely different qualities they possess and together they form the greatest band since The Beatles. Amazing, love them.
Johnny Marr is better than "The Edge" simply by virtue of the fact that he doesn't share his name with one of the World Wrestling Federation superstars.
Oh yes, Johnny is such a cutie pie, with those big brown eyes...but even more than that is his kind personality. I love humble men, especially when they are insanely talented.
I actually got to see Marr with the Pretenders in L.A. Fantastic. He's really the only guistarist they've ever had since Scott who could do any justice to JHS's guitar parts.
Never really got into the smiths but I definitely appreciate Johnny, great guitar player and have a lot of respect for him how he wrote the smiths discography at age 18-23 is beyond me
@ PC Disciple: that's because Johnny Marr is, in point of fact, a BadAss indeed. I met him after one of his gigs at the Troubadour in West Hollywood back in 2003. Shook his hand, total respect, asked him when he finds it best in any given day to write and he told me he likes to get up at 5 a.m. and get right with himself and the universe, he said it's when he feels his best to write songs, etc. I totally get it. He has been my guitar hero since 1984 when I first ever put the Smiths' "Hatful Of Hollow" on my turntable (yes, records back then). I was hooked immediately, as would be anyone with an ear for intelligent, cleverly-crafted songs might be. Took a photo of me and him, got the requisite autographs throughout my Smiths record sleeves, and off I went. Dude is the last of a dying breed. After the Gods made Johnny, they cracked the mold. I challenge anyone to name another guitarist who can rival his virtuosity who has ever come along the pop-rock-alt scene since him. I mean #really. Who? Nuff said. Drop the mic. I'm OUT.
True, though Bernie had more glam rock mixed to his style, where Johnny's style more sorta elegant, and a bit moee distorted sound at times. The hair there though looks very similar Butler had later.
an "interesting time" but not an "easy time"...oh well, i guess even the best of bands split up eventually. loved it while it lasted, and their talent lives on in their amazing albums!
if he had blue bits in his hair he would really look like gary holton who was wayne if auf pet. apart from that he one of the best ever players england ever produced.even in when he was in electronic.
Not to be off topic but does that guy at the beginning remind anyone of Bill Murray? But anyways Johnny Marr is fantastic I wish I could play like him!
Am I the only one who can't help but be reminded of Wesley Crusher (from Star Trek) every time they see Marr in the video for The Boy With The Thorn In His Side? I never liked Wesley Crusher, unfortunately...
astroboirap-I know you posted this a very long time ago, But he looks nothing like Richard Madeley they look totally different you need your eyes checked mate
Wait...how is johnny marr controversial? He's the most mellow, humble, and talented guitarists ever.
pen cil The presenter
This was righ after The Smiths were no more
@Pie the interviewer in the beginning
Yeah, but according to a documentary I saw, he tried to get the biggest cut with Morrissey. Being shady with the other members.

No wonder Morrissey called him "angel" in one of his songs. Johnny certainly looked like one.
The Edge would give an arm to write just one riff even close to what Johnny produced with the Smiths
Johnny Marr is better than "The Edge" simply by virtue of the fact that he doesn't share his name with one of the World Wrestling Federation superstars.
The Edge is brilliant.
So is Johnny Marr.
Both nice blokes as well.
Knocking Edge is just stupid.
To be fair, the edge isn't technically good, he's more of a DJ.
I don't trust anyone called 'the edge'
@@plasticbudgie false.
My king
Johnny Marr, The Edge, Billy Duffy (Love era), the reason i asked for a guitar for my 15th birthday in 1987. Inspirational ❤
cool out, big style.
The Smiths, The The, Electronic, The Healers, Modest Mouse, The Cribs, and his solo album The Messenger... Pure brilliance!
He was awseome with Electronic Bernard Sumner, Neil Tennant. Where's Billy Bragg?
Call the Comet 💫 fabulous

Johnny Marr is a guitar god.

Oh yes, Johnny is such a cutie pie, with those big brown eyes...but even more than that is his kind personality. I love humble men, especially when they are insanely talented.
When you cool out, big style 😎
Cool out big style.
i just wanna hug him
i love him
I actually got to see Marr with the Pretenders in L.A.
Fantastic. He's really the only guistarist they've ever had since Scott who could do any justice to JHS's guitar parts.
Absolutely right. The only guitarist as original as James Honeyman Scott that played in that band.
Cool out, big style.

@I AM SOFA KING WE TALL DID he already came in early October
Met him
Hugged him
And he chatted with us for 15 mins
I’m trying
Morrissey, Marr, Rourke, and Joyce were great together as The Smiths. Great alt band.
Really wish the Pretenders thing had lasted longer--would have loved to hear the results.
Yumyum johnny is pretty.
Johnny FUCKING Marr!!!!......
Bernard Butler is his schoolboy in everything.
this is true
True, though Bernie had more glam rock mixed to his style, where Johnny's style more sorta elegant, and a bit moee distorted sound at times.
The hair there though looks very similar Butler had later.
Merci.
_"cool out big style"_ was Johnny the inventor of "chill out"? 😑
A kind of personal interview about John.
Great guy. Legend
So young and beautiful 💕
best interview ever cool out big style
oh my gawwwwd he is so hot I am in love with him
Honestly, I love The Smiths.
Cool out, big style (?) - Yes, disbanded before I was born. Missed out on this era, cool out, big style, big time. :(
He's fucking cool.
i had a crush on this vj
No difficult feat for JFM to 'cool out big style' 🎸
How boring Noel Gallagher is compared to Johnny.
@damienmetalwind - yep! Edge had the most recognizable signature sound in the 80's and Johhny was happy to admit it.
Great guitarists!
Hothothothohothothothothothothothothothothothothothothothothothot!!

Does anybody know which song from the Pretenders is played here? The guitars sounds pretty Meat Is Murder-ish.
Did he have classical training many Smiths songs feel like fugues
@Schumitastic greatest band since ever, forget about the beatles!
@Reint25 "Show Me" from "Learning to Crawl".
I get the feeling Jarvis Cocker was influenced by him.
Johnny Marr... or Richard Madeley????
stuart paterson lmao exactly my thoughts
Cool as fuck!
why would he wanna play with the pretenders,?
Not to be off topic but does that guy at the beginning remind anyone of Bill Murray? But anyways Johnny Marr is fantastic I wish I could play like him!
oh man *__*
I thought the tv presenter was a young David Lynch
¿Dónde estan nuestros héroes que traducen ? :(
Am I the only one who can't help but be reminded of Wesley Crusher (from Star Trek) every time they see Marr in the video for The Boy With The Thorn In His Side?
I never liked Wesley Crusher, unfortunately...
Most controversial? Huh?
I am.
His hirsutism must have been an inspiration for erstwhile Mancunian Richard Madeley. Shoplifters of the World Unite!
Why the hell has he decided to play with the Pretenders ????
Because they're a great band and were a big influence on The Smiths? Morrissey has covered at least one of their songs as well.
Listen to my song - I hate u Johnny Marr
shame he looks like richard madely though
HA HA HA spot on
astroboirap-I know you posted this a very long time ago, But he looks nothing like Richard Madeley they look totally different you need your eyes checked mate
Looks like a young Richard Madeley (Or vice versa)
THE PRETENDER SUCK COMPARED TO THE SMITHS, & THE CURE!
