    The whole recital is absolutely captivating, but the Feinberg-Tchaikovsky Scherzo has to be one of the most astonishing examples of piano playing that I can ever remember hearing.💕

    Extraordinary! This just might be the best op 111 I've ever heard! I fell in love with this piece 50 years ago listening to Wilhelm Kempff and have heard all the greats play it. Her ability to communicate the beauty of the piece thru her mastery of the keyboard is astonishing to me. And to think this was 12 years ago when she was so young!? Everything I hear her play leaves me touched and so musically satisfied. Wow!

    십수년이 지났지만... 그때 기억을 되집어 보면 참가자 중 공연하고 있던 연주자는 손열음 뿐이었어요. 선곡만 봐도 알 수 있죠. 대부분 차이코프스키 사계 중 기교적으로 어려운 곡 선택하는데... 손열음은 녹턴과 왈츠 폴카를 들고 나왔죠. 2라운드에서도 카푸스틴 곡을 들고 나왔고요. 쉐드린 에튀드 마져 낭만곡처럼 멜로디가 귀에 꽂히게 연주해 버렸으니 말 다했죠..

    How can someone not fall in love after watching and listening this angel playing the sonata n.111, the most terrific and difficult to play but in the same time so beautifull!! Every times Mrs Yeol Eum Son she tickles the yvories she give us a magic. She is the most talented and charming pianist in existence. Thanks so much for sharing with us your music!

      @Paroles_et_Musique 2 года назад

      There is nothing exceptional she does. Technically ok, but a lot of clichés, text inaccuracies (where are the sforzandos?), not enough dramatic, too feminine in the sense she tries to do nice things but then it loses natural and raw power. It's a tough sonata, maybe she was too prudent because competition environment.
      Then Tchaikovsky scherzo so fast that is totally lacks clarity, rather Asian style - sorry for pun. It takes years to understand slavic soul, and is not about speed or brilliance.

    i'm going to comment on the arietta only, as for me this movement is possibly the most sublime expression of humanity in the history of civilisation. Yeol Eum Son's performance , which I came across during a random bit of browsing, is truly wonderful, the most riveting I have come across in many many years (I have been captivated by the work since obtaining Barenboim's HMV disc when it came out in 1967). Although she is not the weightiest of players, the perfect balance, utterly flawless pulse, ability to maintain the flow of the music and also encompass the giant arc of the whole, are almost unrivalled. She manages to to attend to the most intimate poetry of the writing without losing the underlying lilt or overemphasing detail or emotion (just listen to variations 2 - 4). The sublimity of this work must never be sacrificed to the many moments of tenderness or exhalted spirituality. Her fundamentally pure and straightforward account encompasses a myriad of subtleties. Only once ( around 20-21 minutes) does she stray for a moment from the onward pulse of the music, and this can be excused in the circumstances of a competition setting. Her rendition will join the short list of those that I have lived with and will always need to return to: Schnabel, Barenboim (1967, and the last video from the 1983 set of the complete sonatas, starting at 2hours 47 mins), Pollini (1976) and Uchida.
    Stunning!!

      I totally agree. I also came across this by scrolling & found yet again another brilliant performance by Ms Son. In Part III of the competition 30.06.2011. she played the Tchaikovsky & I think they are still applauding her! Thanks for your insight Dan, adding more to my overall enjoyment of the piece.

      That was very beautifully written Dan. I couldn't agree more. Her playing so touches my heart. I loved Schnabel too. The great pianist Jorge Bolet never played 111 after hearing Schnabel play it live. He was so taken with it.
